Usually, you can tell how dominant or submissive your pooch is by observing their interaction with different dogs and animals.
While most breeds fall somewhere between dominant and submissive, a few tend to fall squarely on one side or the other.
The alpha dog breeds take their roles seriously and will never back off a fight.
in this video we have listed 10 most dominant dog breeds with an independent spirit and a protective streak.

    • awesomeOrlie You know it! I have had English mastiffs & have Cane Corso’s and my chihuahua mix has them under all control- they won’t even come sit with me on the couch because the little dog gives them the stink eye... even though I make it clear that I will allow them to come up. My Chinese crested hairless/Mini Rat terrier was even worse- not only was she the top dog of the house but “SHE” would even lift her leg like a male when going potty outside! Weird as heck!

  • Though I have Cane Corso’s and they are definitely dominant.... the Akita is most DEFINITELY one of the most dominant dogs on the planet! When I got my 12 week old Akita many years ago- it had only been at my home for less than 12 hours and my fiancé brought his giant dog over and the second it walked through my door my Akita pup attacked it viciously! I was shocked! I could never have any dogs around her. The Akita is born dominant... I was shocked that it wasn’t on here.

  • The most “don’t mess with me” breed I have owned are male poodles. (It happens that I’ve only had males; just worked out like that) And I’ve owned 6 chows, all of whom were teddy bears. Poodles don’t pick fights, but a perceived challenge will make them stand foursquare, head up, chest out, ears perked, tail erect, silent. The whole attitude says “ok, wanna rumble? Let’s get it on. Your move.” Until you have seen a 150 lb. Great Dane roll over into ultimate submission posture before a 20 lb. fluffy white poodle, who has not made a sound or moved a hair, you also not had the experience of trying not to fall on the ground laughing at this vision. Just a funny true story, folks.

They are loyal and protective , the female is more aggressive than the male, but the male will dominate when activated! Neighbor had a pitbull & twice came unto my property only to be repelled by my male, damn last encounter I was on the ground holding on to his tail & him dragging me to get to that pitbull...I laid there exhausted until the owner of the other dog left the battlefield..sigh, I still laid there exasperating. When the SHTF, you have a true compatriot. They protect family when introduced, chickens, goats, cows, sheep, donkeys, not cats though, lol. Not common in the U.S. both r rescued dogs. Take care they need a large yard / property as they have so much stamina & need to let it out. Not an apartment dog fer sure.

    • There is no such thing, a non pedigree dog is not a Cockapoo or Labradoodle - it's a mongrel.

  • I miss the Alaskan Malamute. They are far more dominant than the husky and a lot bigger.

  • I had a giant schnauzer for 13 years and I will have to say I would not own another one. They are very dormant dogs, very high energy, very smart, and very rough. You defiantly have to exercise your giant every day twice a day or you will regret it. It doesn't matter how you feel weather you are sick, felling down, or just don't feel like doing any thing if you don't take it for long walks or like 30 minutes playing ball twice a day they get very board and need to expend some energy. When they do they get into every thing and chew on everything including furniture. Mine one night while I was asleep pulled my favorite hunting rifle out from under my bed ripped it out of its case and chewed the rubber but-plate off of the gun. They are Velcro dogs too, they want to be with you 24/7. They will pester you for hours until you give in and do what they want. They are worst then a 4 or 5 year old child and are very child like. Never again for me

  • Good list but the Chow Chow, related to the Sharpei, and the Akita belong on this list. I have had both and those dogs don't want no foolin around. To them everything is business except when it comes to a friendly romp with family members.
