As explained in the video, they are not harmed by getting them to the surface and treated with utmost care. It has been proven in scientific research on the Great Barrier Reef that they can be recatched and have had normal growth and no stress marks between the different catches (which can be seen in the coloured rings on their shell).

Bucket list stuff. I've been facinated with nautiluses ever since I was a kid. On my local beach we used to find lots of ammonite fossils, and to see something so similar still alive today is heartening. I'd love to dive with them one day. The closest I've had so far is the mighty fine cuttlefish we often get to see (and sometimes interact with, they're quite confident!) here :)

@deadazzz4 жыл бұрын
Nautiluses aren’t completely stupid, but they’re not nearly as intelligent as squid and octopuses. They rely on drifting around until they eventually find food, whereas squid and octopuses are much more active predators which developed complex brains to help them strategize and hunt more efficiently. Plus, squid and octopuses don’t have protective external shells, so they also have to be smart enough to evade other predators. Nautiluses by comparison are pretty dang chill, scooting around in groups and eating whatever they find floating in the ocean. They’re not built for speed or power, they’re just passing through lookin’ for some dead stuff to chow down on.

As explained in the video, they are not harmed by getting them to the surface and treated with utmost care. It has been proven in scientific research on the Great Barrier Reef that they can be recatched and have had normal growth and no stress marks between the different catches (which can be seen in the coloured rings on their shell).
Very beautiful that such a creature is still alive to this day.
Wtf i thought these things were already extinct Absolutely beautiful!
Youre talking about an ammonite These things are different

no that's ammonites your thinking of
Living fossil. Amazing creature really.
I think you are thinking of an ammonite
GeneralAv 001 ammonites are actually none for appearing in the devonian era, and nautiluses are known for appearing in the cambrian era. Which make nautilus the older one
GeneralAv 001 The Nautilus is older than the Ammonite HA!
GeneralAv 001 Living fossil indeed
i agree. such a rare specimen to encounter on an ocean expedition

It was hammered into my mind from a young age that these things were extinct! This is so cool!
It was actually hammered into our heads that they were not YET extinct-that ALL of their relatives are though-that they are the very last to still be out there somewhere. So-honor to finally witness!
Some species are extint, but one remained
@@janogabor7697 No, there are several. 7 in Nautilus and 2 in Allonautilus

Yeah only the small ones remained but back in the Cambrien era they could grow up to 2.5 meters!
No missing key and evolution This thing older than the dinosaurs
This creature has thousands of relatives, from mollusks and snails to the colossal squid. Its ancestors had a straight shell. So they did evolve.
do who know that he is more like something back from the death 77% of the world believed all nautius are dead just like the Dinosaurs
77% ? are you sure it's not 76%? anyway, dinosaurs as such are not extinct: birds are still around today. And one of their ancestral family treebranches too (crocodilians).
TOUHOU CLASSIC REIMU the fuck are you talking about. Nautilus are not considered extinct. You are confusing them with ammonites
The nautilus is not an ammonite, just looks like one.

"y'all wanna see me do some spins? I'm really good at it...to the left, to the left... Are you getting this?...all my sides? Greeeat... Oh I'm gonna mix it up now...to the right now y'all"
Bucket list stuff.
Such beautiful creatures. What a wonderful opportunity you had to swim and interact with them. Thank you for sharing this experience with us.
Thank you for taking care with them and for taking the time to observe them come up from the depths to mate and to feed and to check things out because they are curious, private, and prefer to interact with those who share similar behaviors.
What a beautiful creature
One fact about nautiluses that they failed to mention in the video: THEY'RE ADORABLE!❤❤❤
They're horrifying, is what I would say if I wasn't telling the truth
With those simple little eyes, and this relatively tiny tentacles, I’m sure nobody would take it seriously as a predator
I've always been fascinated by the chambered nautilus. They're beautiful, amazing creatures. Thanks for sharing!
The chicken scared me 😂 But great video, I'm fascinated by these things. I learned about nautiluses since I'm taking marine science and they're pretty cool
My favorite animal, the Nautilus is so beautiful. It’s amazing how they are built, with the jet and the gas pouch.
They are a very ancient creature. Fossils of them have been found dating back many hundreds of millions of years. Amazing that they have survived practically unchanged for so long.
i never knew that a creature called the nautilus existed! I thought it was captain Nemo's submarine. Thanks for posting such an amazing video. It looks rare and unreal!
they are living fossils older then horseshoe crabs. they were around before the dinosaurs are born! they haven't changed a bit and they are 500Million years old!
They arent weird THEY LOOK LIKE TINY ADORABLE MOONS IN THE SEA
THATS SUCH A CUTE WAY TO DESCRIBE THEM
Why do some people keep asking if there good to eat!? That's why some animals go extinct because of humans;(
David Cruz survival of the fittest... adapt or be eaten. Welcome to nature, nature aint fair.
Yuki Covian fuck you.
Marcos Or Why. Simple fact of life. Get over it. Nature is not fair. Nature does not care if you can't survive. Either you adapt or you die. Nature is not the butterflies and rainbows and peace and love people think it is. Any outdoorsman knowns that nature is a fickle bitch that takes as much as she gives.
David Cruz these guys are almost dead i think they have been since the prehistoric
cole forster No. This species is still alive although they have evolved since the prehistoric era.
Imagine how many billions of years these things have been around! Easily the oldest species still around.
Jellyfish beg to differ
I don't think you can say that just because it looks really old lol
@@pandafat4043 They have been around largely unchanged for hundreds of millions of years. Some other species have as well; namely crocodilians, sharks, jellyfish (longest existings species still living), miscealleneous arthropods like crabs. Mainly sea or water dwelling oviparous animal species
@@MrAskmannen I'm aware, all I meant was that you can't say it's easily the oldest living animal just because it looks ancient
Ayy Lien sponges beg to differ.
Pretty cool! They seem like a very docile creature and I am amazed how deep down that diver went! Goodness!
My brain is hurting rn... my whole life I thought the nautilus was extinct it’s so trippy looking at them
Very pretty. Thank you for this high quality footage. How intelligent are these animals... I know their evolved relatives (octopuses, squid and cuttlefish) are all highly intelligent... they strike me as rather... slow... in that regard ^_^
a cuttlefish's brain is bigger than its own body so basically it's the smartest cephalopod out of all, Nautilus barely have intelligence
floating plants xD reminds me of myxomycete not floating... not plants... not animal or fungus, lol but big and moving
Jelly Squiddles they aren't as intelligent as squid octopus or cuddles but their olfactory bulb is much much larger so they can track based on smell better than their relatives.
@Liberty Justice science has since disproved your claim of lacking intelligence
My heart beat lowered 20 bpm watching this.
Great video! So nice to see people who respect nature and their habitat. Great way to satisfy ones need to see something that is majestic and interesting at the same time.
Ah, yes. The ancient Nautilus, headbanging its way through 5 extinctions. Truly a vibe.

You’re probably thinking of amonites which are extinct
Jamie Smith Nautilus are older. And there still alive but there relatives are not. The nautilus is really lucky for surviving all these eras

Thank you for sharing a beautiful video of animals that humans rarely ever see. I appreciate the work involved in the study of hard to find sea life.
Their arms seem to be painfully short
yup
and useless
they really are retracted, they can extend their tentacles to great lengths to capture food
They aren’t active predators like other cephalopods. They are most scavengers and take the chance if something comes close to them. Keeping this in mind they evolved to have very short appendages. They are not useless, they are oerfect for how the nautilus lives,
Water They aren’t useless. They evolved to have small appendages due to the way they live. They are the perfect size for them.
