I love the wings on cuttlefish, they look absolutely whimsical with them. What fascinates me is how ancient this technique of "flapping your wings" underwater is. We've found fossils of animals dating back all the way to the cambrian (500 Million years ago) that have something akin to these wings. For context, thats as old as jellyfish, the dinosaurs are not even half as old. Sorry if I come off as a 🤓

  • They are curious little creatures. This one was very brave or used to divers. For those who don't know, the best way to have an encounter with these guys is to just stay still. If you swim toward them they will get scared. But if you just stay still, soon enough they will not be able to resist investigating the strange thing in front of them. I've had ignorant snorkelers scare off a group of them before, but I couldn't convey to them that they need to just stop doing things instead of trying to get closer to them as I was at depth and they didn't translate my hand signals. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • Funny, it seems like that should be a given, especially with smaller creatures. Everything is naturally freaked out by an animal larger than them... Most of the closest wild animal encounters I've had were when I was just sitting out on my steps smoking and checking out my phone. Skunks and possum walking by within half a foot, outdoor cats, deer walking by within ten feet, crows hanging out with me at a park... the best was a little chipmunk who scampered up and rested a paw on my foot, looking around, and that was the first time I'd ever seen a chipmunk in that area over twenty years of living there. Not moving is often best to let an animal feel safe while it either checks you out or goes about its business. Even housecats appreciate this.

In one of my first jewellery classes, cuttlefish skeleton was used, to be carved into and then cast into liquid sterling silver. Never know how smart cuttlefish were until several years ago. Don’t know if this pretty fish is still being sold for such purposes.
