The Victoria’s Secret fashion show was one of the biggest events of the year. But the over-sexualized ads and flashy runway shows lost their sparkle as women began to seek more body-positive brands. The company is now trying to reinvent itself, but will its Angels ever fly so high again?

  • To be honest, even as a girl I liked watching their shows, they were a unique part of their brand image. The designs were pretty, the performances were nice. Their current marketing plan seems forced like they're trying to catch up to the market trends. Also like the video said, their actual bras were uncomfortable and overpriced.

  • The CEO stepped down because she had an affair with a lawyer who threatened to go public with lots of dirt. In 2015 we had a sweet bonus that was equal to nearly a full month of pay. Then Les decided to cancel swimwear which confused the hell out of us because it was doing so well. It's so weird to go from joining one of the biggest companies with a success in women's fashion. Work on cool projects, including doing executive services for a bit supporting SVPs, the CIO, and CFO (both good people), working as an engineer for the stores technology, to closing hundreds of stores, selling LaSenza, closing Henri Bendel and then 1300 employees including myself getting laid off in the middle of a pandemic. I'm happy I had a chance to spend nearly a decade there as its what enabled me to make the jump to Silicon Valley, but it's sad to see the company and by extension a lot of the good people who just wanted a good job get hurt.

Now they're just spandex or a basic, cheap kind of lace. Also, they don't sell my size, once I was past 8th grade. They don't sell many 30 band sizes, let alone a 30DDD. I only have one wire bra that size because I don't like them very much, but I have moved to other more luxurious, intricately-designed brands for bralletes and matching sets. Their bras were expensive, uncomfortable, and would fall apart with one wash. I was _livid_ when I spent $150 on 3 bras and they all fell apart. Especially when little to none of their products fit me right as I was also big busted and had no need for all the push up and padded items they kept emphasis on. The bras themselves required way too much care. If you wanted to keep them useable, you had to practically hand wash and dry each time. As a working student, I didn’t have time for all of that. The underwear looked good but were pretty much fashioned for someone who had a very trim body which as a size 10, I did not have - in their store I was considered a XL. Lastly, if you did find something you liked, it would either be quickly discontinued or inconsistent along colors and materials in the next round of releases.

  • I think VS got caught flat footed by social media. At one time they ruled the fashion world with their beautiful statuesque supermodels who men luster after and a lot of young women aspired to be like, even if they were way too tall and wore size 0 clothing. But once social media took off, and fashion competitors who didn't have the multi-million dollar budgets VS had to advertise their wares, they got smart and relied on KZhead, Snapchat, and Instagram influencers to help promote their products. Most young women couldn't possibly relate to supermodels like Adriana Lima, Bar Rafeli, or Gisele Bunchen, but they could relate to Courtney from Toledo or Jessica from Ft. Worth doing a fashion haul video on KZhead honestly showing how well or poorly some clothes fit, and that's what caused competitors like Fashion Nova or Miami Styles to eat into VS' market share. Combine that with coming out of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression and the Me Too movement, and it makes sense that VS would struggle.

    @728huey@728huey2 жыл бұрын
    • I always saw VS as a trend, more than a brand. It catered to the generation that grew up with 90's supermodels, followed by the MTV and E channel reality shows aimed at my generation (millennial here!). Like all trends, sooner or later, they fall from grace for various reasons. The Kardashians (as much as we hate them) helped pave forth what trends women should invest in, especially since they could let their audience know what they were wearing. Combine that with social media influencers, the rise of online shopping, and finding dupes of the bras that VS sells because now everyone is money conscious; there was no way VS could keep up the popularity it once had in the 90s and early 2000s. Now that Hulu has released a documentary about them, the brand is forever damaged (just like what happened with Abercrombie and Fitch). It won't be long before the brand files for bankruptcy, liquidate its assets, and shuts its doors forever.

  • I never shopped there. I would take one look at the skinny girls, the pink everything and the tiny tiny bras and go "Nope. Gonna go to walmart and buy ten sports bras for the same price and be comfortable." It was just too small, everything was pink and lace and impractical. I just wanted something to contain the flesh bags and keeps them from causing me pain.

  • I vacationed in New York this summer. As I've done before, I bought 4 bras, send 6 panties at Victoria Secret. The bras were okay in terms of fit and comfort but the panties were horrible. Clearly, the fabric used were very poor and the actual make does not worth the money I paid. The panties I bought at Telco are way better, so going fwd, I'll never spend money at VS again.

    • I have no clue what they have done to their panties. The material feels as thin as tissue paper. The only panties I do get from them are the "freebies" I get with a coupon, and I usually get the boyshorts from "Pink" because they are still pretty decent. I also will still buy a bra from them if the pattern and fit attracts my attention. Other than that I really don't see them being what they once were. There are better, more body positive brands out there.

  • 1. Their bras are terribly uncomfortable and not durable (the wire in mine always stabbed me within a couple weeks) 2. They have no idea who their audience is. They seem to be selling lingerie (and more commonly sex) to men, not women. In order to shift audiences and do better as a company they have to accept that will loose the "male fantasy" trope. This will make them more common though, so they will have to make better quality products to keep up and stand out. It will be an uphill climb and I really dont care if they flop (I just feel bad for the employees).

  • I was a big mail order and 3rd Street Santa Monica store customer for over 25 years. The prices were always too high, but what ended my relationship as a customer was the changes in the selection and the drop in quality; it was never the show. The new international buyers sucked.

    @jad1103@jad11038 ай бұрын
  • I understand why they changed the brand and why many women didn’t felt represented by their skinny models, but all of this isn’t a reason to take all the glamour out of the brand and basically turn it into a boring and unexciting brand. Their angels and the shows were iconic and what made the company special and now they removed that. Very soon, this brand will slide into absolute insignificance. They could’ve kept the angels branding and a less expensive and watered down version of the show but with more body types included. This also would’ve helped a lot with getting rid of their outdated view of womens body. But no, they cancelled all that just because they show more body types now? It feels like they try to communicate that they might include more body types now, but that women with other body types don’t deserve being called angel and they don’t deserve a runway show and the glamour. Like it was reserved only for their skinny top models and now after being forced to include more body types their like “nah, those imperfect women don’t deserve a show. Let’s cancel it” or what?

    @mikipav1064@mikipav10642 жыл бұрын
    • Honestly you think their point was “they don’t deserve it”? Like… honestly? Or more likely no one will watch it? We like it or not people want to see what they perceive as attractive people, no one will stay watching a show of mediocre looking people walking in lingerie. That holds for both men and women. I wouldn’t sit watch a show of men with beer bellies walk around in speedos or briefs. Would you?
