In this video i meet up with @DirtLifestyle and @JustinTBraun Way up in the mountains for a camping trip. I cant wait to show you guys this new project. I purchased a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero for $4000 and will be turning it into a budget family off road, overlanding vehicle. The potential of this chassis is incredible with its offroad Dakar Rally racing roots, i think this is the best platform for a budget build. Let me know what you guys think!!

  • I'm terrified these are going to go from "unknown" to "underrated" to "overvalued" within the next few years, since that's the trajectory of every other underrated car.

    • They already are over valued. You can't find one in decent running condition and good cosmetically for under $8500-$10000 at least the 2.5 Gen anyways. Why is it that when I like a certain vehicle or anything really everyone else has to like the same thing. Trying to get your hands on one is almost impossible when everyone keeps buying them up. They are not special anymore because everyone is driving these things around and certainly not worth 9000 - 10000 with 250000+ Miles on them.

Me and my wife use it to overland here in New Zealand. Upgraded the suspension with 2inch OME, and changed to Maxxis AT tyres. Added a roof platform and rooftop tent, house battery in the back, and fridge (removed 3rd row seats). It takes us everywhere, with such a nice ride. Good luck with your build - please share a link if you're recording your progress. Have fun!!

  • Sweet ride. The 2nd gen Montero SR comes with a factory air locker, and all gen 2s fit 33x11 MT tires stock. That rear suspension is super nice though, I can't think of anything else that is IRS and has a real low range and room for overlanding. Sorry VW the Touarge is too small, and the low range isn't very much of a gear change.

Check out Adventure Driven design for their USA made full underbody armour and Luso Overland for additional parts. There are a few Gen 3s that have done Rubicon and many that done MOAB also. It's definitely one of the last overbuilt Japanese SUVs.

Once over and back on the wheels, of course totaled, but the structure of the cabin was so sound that if it weren’t for a flat tire i could have driven it home. The doors all opened after the roll as well.

    • I've been wondering about the Montero Sport. My sister had one brand new and 2001 or so and it wasn't a bad looking vehicle. Being a fan of SUVs and owning two rodeos and driving in multiple 4Runners that friends have owned the rodeo is my all-time favorite, but they are known to have transmission issues. How does the Montero Sport Rank in reliability? Transmission and motor specifically.

      @williamperri3437@williamperri3437 Жыл бұрын
    • @@williamperri3437 from my experience I have very little wrong happen with the engine itself. Some weird probably one off stuff. It was from the Mid-west so a lot salt. I had the alignment pin shear off the timing gear. So the engine ran but the belts stopped spinning. Then I had the crank sensor break apart while driving. Other than that nothing notable. Most everything I have read says the same thing keep up on your maintenance and it will go forever. Mitsubishi used the same motor in most of their vehicles. The 3.5 in the sport is the same one in the Montero. It is an interference engine so make sure the timing belt is new or change it if you buy one and have no record of it being changed. I am closing in on 300k miles and it goes. The transmission is pretty solid I haven't had any problems with it at all. Shifts strong every time. The only thing I would say negativity about owning any Mitsubishi is the lack of aftermarket support. Ironman 4x4 is the only US based dealer of lift kits, other than that you are stuck with ordering from Australia. You aren't going to pick something out at your local 4x4 shop for armor or bumpers either. Everything thing is either custom made or order from overseas.

  • I own a 99 Montero SR. When I first bought it in 2010. The salesman was telling me something about the great history of this thing but I was not paying attention. Two years later, because of my lack of knowledge of maintenance in this thing,I had electrical problems (it really needs an OEM alternator) Mitsubishi or denso. I let it sit for 8 years. during the pandemic. I decided to get it running again just so could sell it for about 1000 dollars. But after much research and discovery of the MMUSA group I realized how valuable and rare mine was and relearned the history of my 99. Any way it has been over a year and over 10,0000 miles since I got mine running again. And I can't tell you how good this thing sounds and rides even after sitting for so long. I did have to clean out the gas tank and replace the fuel pump

    • Yeah, I’ve had my eye on them for years and passed on some I probably shouldn’t have, mostly due to aftermarket support. Ha ha, so now I have two Nissan Xterra’s, an 08 Off Road and an 014 S, and not much aftermarket support with them either, but they’ve been🤔pretty much bulletproof.The 08 Off Road has 183k on the clock. The 014 has only 47K and no issues with either so far in 7 + years of ownership.
