THIS Is Why Cavs Fans Want To TRADE Donovan Mitchell

This play is the reason why some overreacting Cavs fans want him traded. You see that nobody else touches this ball as Mitchell fires away from way downtown and misses.
This is equally as bad, as Donovan doesn’t involve anyone on his team, goes right at Wiggins who’s a terrific defender and throws up a perfectly contested one hander. Nothing happened on this possession.
Now Cleveland fans take situations like these and compare them to what happened in the last 4 games that he missed due to injury where the ball just flew all over the court.
Let me show you how Cleveland plays with and without Mitchell and what’s the good and the bad in his game.
With Donovan handling the ball, a lot of times it becomes screening to get him a switch and a favorable matchup. And from there it’s standing around and watching him do his thing.
Right here the play is designed strictly so that he gets Curry on him, a matchup that they want to exploit. So none of his teammates will make a play here. Everyone is looking up top. And Mitchell shakes and bakes for the 3, sooo good possession?! Umm let’s move on.
Right here again, we got Donovan with the ball, nobody else touches it or does anything here, he gets Curry again on him, raises up and knocks down another 3.
Hey the guy is averaging 29 points on 48 and a half percent from the field and 39 percent from downtown. That’s a monster season. Cleveland fans, what are you complaining about?
Well I guess at least some of them are complaining because the team was 5-6 before he got injured. And even if you’re close to 50% from the field as he is, that means that for every shot like this that goes in, there’s one like this that doesn’t.
And the team doesn’t get involved, doesn’t feel the ball, doesn’t have a nice rhythm.
They just stand around and watch him.
Not having Mitchell for these last few games meant that every other guy had a bigger responsibility to contribute but also more freedom to move and to just play.
On this play, we got literally everyone moving, engaging and spreading out the defense, and the Cavs go for one of the craziest plays you’ll see which is a big to big pick and roll. And there’s no stopping this.
In crunch time against Philly there’s no hero shots here, instead we got a high pick for Garland, and a great reaction by Allen on the short roll as he sees Embiid rotating, and finds Mobley for another big man connection.
Whatever the frequency of plays like this is, the Cavs need to increase it. Like literally go all out on Allen and Mobley connections.
And here’s the type of shot that Cleveland would get with Mitchell, at the end of a close game. This is literally 1 on 5 here with the rest of the Cavs watching.
The very next play it’s the same thing. Isolation for Spida. This time he makes it. So that’s 1 make and 1 miss. 50% But nobody else touched the ball. You see my point?
One thing that Donovan definitely doesn’t do is play off the ball. Follow Garland here as he’s going to curl inside then right back out to set a back screen for Niang who is almost surprised at how wide open he is.
Instead of trying to take Harris here off the dribble, look at what Darius does. A little bump on the handoff like a quasi screen that completely opens up Struss outside. Now the defense is overreacting to that and Struss just bounces it to Allen for the easy finish. When you watch the offense without Mitchell, there seems to be more spontaneity, more free flowing movement, back screening for other guys, or random cuts to the basket, just simple intuitive plays off the ball. That’s the key here. Off the ball.
Cleveland fans are mostly complaining because everything with Donovan comes with him having full control of the basketball.
Otherwise, you gotta be crazy to think that having an efficient 30 point per game scorer on your team is a bad thing.
Plus, he’s been the scariest transition weapon in the league this season.
Check out the numbers here provided by NBA university, a great follow on twitter btw.
Number 1 in points, meaning that there is a high volume of transition opportunities but also in the 99th percentile in efficiency. Both effective field goal percentage and points per possession.
This is the perfect combination.
And if you want easy points, this is a great way to get them.
Also, he’s a great shot maker, and you always need a guy like that.
Cleveland fans were loud after the first 3 wins without him, but then Miami caught the Cavs on a back to back game and used the opportunity to absolutely destroy them.
I’m sure a guy like Mitchell would’ve been nice to have for that game.
Look, there is no way that this team has a higher ceiling without him, but I get the idea that he does need to improve in some aspects off the ball, and focus more on the team overall and how all the other players would perform with him on the court.

  • The complaints from Cavs fans I think are rooted in wanting to return to serious playoff runs they experienced when they had LeBron. Movement, everyone involved, set plays, lack of hero ball... everything they used to watch. They have seen that a single-player act - like how Donovan Mitchell plays - can only excel your team in the regular season. But as soon as the playoffs start, the isolation becomes more of a defensive bail out than an offensive positive. Stars like Mitchell would be more effective with team involvement despite individual numbers taking a slight dip, but the stat sheet is what is readily available to rate your own play so if he has great numbers he will always believe he benefits the team.

It's not accurate to use "anomaly" players as examples, because they are, well, anomalies. Coaches have ZERO input into playing time and shot selection. The CBA, culminating with the signed contract negotiated between the GM and the player's agent, 100% determines that player's position in the team hierarchy. Repeat: THE COACH HAS ZERO INPUT INTO DEFYING THE CBA, ZERO INPUT INTO DEFYING THE GM, ZERO INPUT INTO "COACHING" AN EMPLOYEE WHO MAKES 10 TIMES THEIR SALARY. You're confused because you think it's "basketball". It's "contract management". Tatum and Brown used to pass the basketball. Now that they have max-contracts, they have become the ball-stoppers on their team. Same with Mitchell. Mitchell won't change because his contract says he doesn't have to change. My family already knows that D Mitch puts in work sometimes but at the end of the day, his role on this team is to be a WEAPON, an offensive scorer for when our offense stagnates. The issue is that sometimes he doesn't do that effectively (like with the series vs NY). E Mobe gets less touches as well so it hinders development (makes sense), and our whole offense functions better when it decides to play as a TEAM and run it through DG.

I would have loved to see a more defensive minded, allround player that also brings a bit of shooting. Someone like Dejounte Murray or Immanuel Quickley. The last one is younger too, which fits better with the timeline of the rest of the starting lineup. That said, for him to be on a great defensive team also makes sense, as they really needed more firepower and can probably handle having one weaker defender more than most other teams.

    • @@avionkirts3049you also gotta realize that Lauri didn't know he was gonna play SF till training camp started. The reason he's been popping off in Utah is because he prepared the entirety of last season and asked his national team coach to play him more on the perimeter at the 3. He actually trained for the position and then it turned out he was getting shipped to Utah where he instantly became the first option which also helped. I'm not saying he'd be averaging the same ppg or sum but he'd def would've been scoring more and just been overall more consistent/efficient.

      @christybobby7147@christybobby71475 ай бұрын
  • Problem is he's averaging 28 points and six assists this season. So it's hard to argue against that kind of productivity. It may not be his fault per se. Maybe the coaches need to figure out a way to get the offense flowing more efficiently when he's on the floor. He is not doing anything Steph Curry, Damian Lillard, SGA, or Tyrese Haliburton are doing. And unlike other underperforming point guards, Donovan Mitchell is a perennial All-Star and franchise player. If he wasn't scoring as much, and if his stats were less padded, your argument would then be that he is underperforming. Not sure that Donovan Mitchell, exclusively, is the problem here. Especially not when he is putting up those numbers and shooting nearly 50% from the field.

I want Mitchell to play a bit more off the ball and to go to iso mode when needed and to not over abuse it. It's fine to abuse switches and favorable match-ups but he can get his points alright. What the Cavs need is team ball and to run plays that makes them an offense thaat can catch fire as a team. We all know that Cavs struggle a lot in 4th quarters and that's because after doing so much iso you would obviously have Mitchell tired and the rest of the team cold. James Harden and the rockets still needed chris paul to become championship countenter. Mitchell should be the closer but Darius should be the playmaker and you also need Allen and Mobley to get involved offensively so that shooters like Struss and Niang get more space to shoot. We lost to a knicks team that was shooting under 30% from the 3 point line in play-offs and 43 % from the field in last play-offs and I hope the cavs took it as a lesson because this serie highlighted all the cavs problems. They added shooters and they need to dial down the iso now.

  • I got clowned on heavily for saying Mitchell is not a superstar before the season started. I will die on this hill-he’s a great player but he’s just a better version of Bradley Beal. No team with DMitch as their top player will ever win their conference, yet alone the Finals

    @Mieslk2@Mieslk25 ай бұрын
    • I disagree he’s just not on the right team he has yet to play with a good wing good bench also you can say that about most players in the league no one is winning a championship as the best player on a team outside of maybe 6 players

    • @@uncleshannon1756 exactly my point dawg. There are only like 6-8 players who can win as No. 1 option, so they are the only ones who can be considered “superstars”…I see people calling all sorts of dudes “superstars” when really only the most elite of the elite should have that title. DMitch has never been out of the second round as a No. 1 option and there’s no way in hell any team is gonna win their conference with him as their top dog. Hence why he’s not a “superstar” He’s a really good volume scorer that doesn’t provide much else. The Cavs play better without him

  • While it would make sense to applaud Mitchell for being an efficient scorer, I think the Cavs fans are right to question him. I can understand not everyone can and will be a great playmaker, it is a specific skillset that comes more naturally to some. Spider is most definitely a gifted scorer, but his offense, however great it is, will drop off in effectiveness in the playoffs, as better and more tight defenses will try to lock him up with a defensive specialist or double him out of his game. If he cannot give an advantage to his team in such situations, he will always be a negative ceiling to how far they can go in the playoffs. As my two favorite teams are the Mavs and Pelicans, I am fortunate enough to have incredibly unselfish stars on both my teams. Luka and Kyrie are both extremely good scorers, but they still pass the ball a ton and rack up a ton of assists for high percentage shots. Same goes for Zion and Ingram, they can both force a ton of shots and still be efficient, but they usually pass if they can get something better, or see a good opening. Hell, It might not seem as flashy as what Donovan can do sometimes, but offensive specialists like THJ on the Mavs can also pass the ball to give an easy shot for his teammates, or simply restrain himself and opt for a better shot. Even Jordan Hawkins, a rookie on the Pelicans and a truly gifted shooter only fires when he's open and thinks he can get it off. He makes passes and smart decisions as well, so there is absolutely no reason why a talented star like Mitchell shouldn't be able to adjust his game to benefit his team more, even if only to get them more in rhythm and get a few more high percentage looks.

  • Trauma from his time in Utah where he had to do everything. Only pass he had back then was to Ingles. Hero ball is fine once in a while. But it won't get you all the way to the ring.

  • Gobert was the scapegoat in Utah, but Mitchell was equally, if not more to blame. He had a horrible connection with Gobert because he either wouldn't, or couldn't pass. Gobert had a fantastic connection with Ingles so Gobert was no slouch in the pnr. It was Mitchell's inability to get his teammates involved.

  • As a Cavs fan, i was originally against trading for Mitchell last year and wouldve much rather kept the core with Lauri abd Sexton. I like Donovan but the reasons highlighted in the video are exactly why I don't like how he fits here. Im not saying i want him gone, and there are times where he does the other things to help us win. However thats the issue, its only some times when he does it. He has all the skills to be an effective off ball player and i think our offense could become a lot more lethal if he didnt hijack possessions and force up tough shots over multiple defenders. I do think the team can succeed with him but it all starts with his willingness to buy-in and trust his teammates. If that doesnt happen then im of the opinion that we should look to move him either at the deadline or in the summer
