Aron Ralston frees himself up while Sigur Rós' Festival track makes the whole thing so thrilling.

The way the music climaxes right as Aron finally realizes that he can't do everything on his own and screams, "I NEED HELP!" is perfect. The family doesn't start running toward him until he admits that he needs help. This scene is absolute genius and puts an exclamation point on his character arc. It should get talked about more than it does.

You just perfectly put into words how I feel about this scene. This whole thing was about him realizing that he needs others to live a proper life, and when he first said "I need help" it had a hint of shame like he was struggling to admit it. This scene gives me such goosebumps.. that moment where he sees the painted people on the wall- the first ‘people’ he has seen in days ..even though they are symbolic, that little smile shows he’s looking at humanity in a very different way now. And screaming ‘please help me’ when he sees the trekkers- I feel this has a much deeper meaning than simply calling for help in that desperate moment.. it’s like he doesn’t want to be alone anymore in his life, and by pushing through absolute isolation, desperation and vulnerability, the reward at the end is discovering the best of humanity. Everyone totally focused on helping him to stay alive. Love it!

Just thee fact that they’re already running towards him makes me imagine that, a minute earlier, the mom and son ran into them and told them “a guy needs help,” and they sprung into action. The whole sequence starting from “I need help” through the helicopter arriving is like some sort of relay for life with everybody taking turns and doing their part to save a dying man. Beautiful.

I can relate to this as a runner, meaning I had went out for a long run in the mountains and was listening to my iPod and just realized how far out I was without water and the temperature rose higher . I was dehydrated and was was thinking what to do , I would never make it back, too far out , so I prayed to God for help . I walked as far as I could go and looked around and saw a water trough for cows and a pipe with running water coming out . I stumbled to it and let me tell you water never tasted so good and refreshing . The first thing I did was thank God and made it back .

He believed it was a sign of him cheating death & it was not him that died but the bird instead. It was pretty cool the movie should have added that into the scene.

That ending is emotional as fuck, imagine the feeling of rescue, what a legend he was to survive, I'm very glad he's still with us.
The music makes it that way. Without the music playing it wouldn’t be anywhere near as emotional as it is. Perfect choice of music score
The music was very important to the scene and of course totally emotional. You felt with him through the entire movie and you are just glad and everybody knows the feeling when you get help in a very very difficult situation. Aron had lots of luck in his situation, now 20 years ago.

3:09 lol sorta how the kid is running, arms are all swinging.. Beautiful movie, powerful scene, but never ever go hiking or spelunking alone!
You just perfectly put into words how I feel about this scene. This whole thing was about him realizing that he needs others to live a proper life, and when he first said "I need help" it had a hint of shame like he was struggling to admit it. But when he yelled it, really showed that his character progressed to the point of admitting he does. Thank you.
It’s real story
i mean, he yells "help" a couple of times before they start running toward him
Reminds me Into The Wild when the kid dies because he thought nobody would understand him and lived alone. His place of death happened to be a mecca for many people who understood.
I've seen the movie 3 times, but this scene alone I saw probably about 200 times. In my opinion it's one of the best scenes in the history of cinema, and the music plays a big part in that.
danny boyle always touches people hearts with his movies. he is a film magician.
+ronnie marx he's so underrated! It's so sad, he has so much talent but a lot of it has gone unrecognized. He is so much better than most directors out there, he has this amazing feeling to each film he touches. I love his work
ditto! he has a knack for very high emotional IQ.
Marc Lloyd really? I don't think he's underrated at all. He made Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, The Beach 127 hours, and Steve Jobs to name a few. Most people don't really know who the directors of movies are.
No, I'm saying he deserves the kind of attention other directors get. Danny is really good personally love him.

Decided to watch this scene when I got frustrated in life.
@ 1:33 This little 5-second sequence where he sees the primitive art gives new meaning to the term "art appreciation." The human forms foreshadow the appearance of the hikers who are about to find him. It's also a reminder (for him) that he is not alone in the world, and a reminder for us of why movies and music make us feel so good.
it's a really good interpretation, those 5 seconds will probably be one of the best moments of the whole movie if not the best.
What I think about his encounter with the art was like a visitation, a brief vision of the ancestors. And he has won their approval
For the past 5 years, this scene was literally my go to kind of drug whenever my life went downhill or something bad happened because it gave my such motivation that nothing could gave
That's amazing. Hope you're still going strong.
I thought I was the only one! I hope you’re doing well my bro! Never give up PS: lookin absolutely massive, bro! Hope everything is going good 💪🔥
True for me too. I live with chronic pain and I've this movies dozens of times, and this KZhead hundreds. James Franco is the greatest, and Aron Ralston is the other greatest. I've read the book twice and tonight pulled out the DVD to watch again (CVS no longer gives my pain meds). Fun fact: I was waiting at CVS one night reading the book, and another customer remarked, "My sister saw that guy." I was excited: "You mean she went to one of his motivational talks?" "No," he said. "She saw him being airlifted out."
Hope you’re all doing well
Congratulations brother! God bless you
This scene LITERALLY restored my faith in Humanity.
Yeah because who would help a dying person when you have a car, water and plenty of time on your hands.
you make me cry...
Mark Hazleton lol pretty sure everyone would help a dying person in the middle of nowhere
Can I just remind everyone that this is a movie
In fact seeing people looking for a person is just a beautiful thing to watch.
1:40 this is just beautiful. I think he smiles because he knows how beautiful the world is despite his misery.
Heart wrenchingly beautiful
Love it!
Aron said this was the sweetest tasting water he had ever drank. He wasnt sure if it was due to the leaves turning the puddle into tea or just because he hadnt had water in days. Edit: thanks for the likes! I actually had the pleasure to meet Aron a few years back. I am grateful to talk with him, he is a man with great stature and love for life.

What amazes me is that after he got out of that cave that was just the beginning of his career, he realized there’s more to life. He got married, got a kid, became an engineer, did more hobbies, and is living life to the fullest despite losing his arm. Being trapped there made him realize how beautiful life is and theres more out there to experience. Its like he found his calling when he got out of that hellhole. I swear, soundtracks sometimes make or break a movie and Festival made this movie. it brought a sense of relief and joy. Because of it this movie has been on of the only movies that has brought tears to my eyes.
Sigur ros is a criminally underrated band. I hate how underappreciated post rock is in general. It is literally music for the soul. You can feel the instruments weep either out of joy or sadness. Another great song that comes to mind is Mono's nostalgia. Pure art.
I love this scene as it is him finally realizing that he can’t do everything on his own and he “needs help”
I adore the ending of this film - how those people rushed to help Aaron, and gave him their water to drink, and calling the emergency services for him. It’s what any decent human being would do, but it’s still lovely to see! 😊❤️
I find the part where the second couple run towards him knowing immediately what is up and hand him the water so moving. You strip all the noise away and deep down, we all really want to help each other.
I've never seen a song fit so perfectly in a scene
Seeing him try to mouth out the words help can rly bring a grown man to tears... this entire scene was excellently done and truly brings Arons pain to the film
(The mom and man) THAT GUY JUST DRANK ALL OUR WATER

No matter how many times I've seen this ending it never loses its impact, the acting, editing, and sound build all together as Aron finally gets the help he needs, realizing he doesn't want to be alone anymore.
On the most satisfying ending of all time
My family members have been no idea why I like this movie. I can't explain it I find aron ralston a huge inspiration to me. He changed my life for the better after seeing the movie

This scene will always make me cry. The part when hes trying to yell for help is the most powerful and emotional scene of any movie
It’s amazing what music can do for movie scenes. The music here is perfectly chosen. It makes this scene 100 times more emotional. This is a great movie. 10/10
when he saw the "wall-painting" :') no words needed
Many interpretations of that shot but yeah no words can describe that scene
one of the best ending scenes in cinema. danny boyle is an incredible director. props to james franco as well
Literally my favourite movie because of this scene, him yelling "I need help" always brings me to tears. This movie just goes to show that the will to live, is the strongest will ever.
The combination of the music hitting at 4:10 and seeing the second couple running over is the part that always gets the tears going for me. Beautiful.
That little smile he gives off seeing the rock paintings is so heart-warming. He was just so incredibly happy deep down that he had gotten out of what was surely meant to be his final resting place. Just to see anything but those canyon walls again would have been such an incredible feeling for Aron. Such an incredible story.
Saw this movie a few weeks ago. I almost cried at this scene..
That was my case.
Almost??
If it wasn’t for this scene, I wouldn’t know Sigur Ros. Forever grateful for this
I cry every time I watch this scene…. The kindness of strangers is so powerful
I was so happy for him that he made it. I cried to myself in the theater when this came out .
Thank you for this story. Glad it worked out. Next time take more precautions.
This movie makes me cry, the ending is brutal, the music is incredible, whatever happens to us you have to be strong and continue forward, always forward, always strong
It's such an incredible scene to be able to turn a moment of horror and trauma like this into something heroic and triumphant. The movie shows that he thought he could do everything all on his own because he was a "big hard hero", so when he encounters the family and learns to ask for help it is heartwarming rather than scary.
he actually got stomach worms from that water
nobushi raider after surviving in his piss its the best water he ever tasted
He will be given post prpphylactic drugs for that
I think bacterial infection to his broken arm, than stomach worm
Is worth it though if it gives him more time to get out of their. The diseases and stuff from the water won't instantly begin.
What's worse? Stomach worms? or death?
I can’t imagine the pain Aron Ralston went through. What a brave man to go through all of that pain.
Besides a perfect movie & ending this was probably the first piece of music that influenced me so much that I kept digging for years about what kind of music it was & what was so intriguing about it. ❤️ to sigur rós & post-rock music they make. I'm glad there are more of us who liked this art.
This scene gets me everyt time. When the family sees him and immediately starts running to him, when they see a man covered in blood and the father instinctively protects his son while still wanting to help. This scene is everything human.
James Franco is one of the most underrated actors. He was a perfect Harry Osborn. And he was perfect in this role right here.
That part. Exactly that part right there “No, I got to keep going.” That’s exactly the kind of mindset we all need ❤️
This last part is pure gold and sends goosebumps every time I watch!
