How to catch and cook crayfish - its so simple.... I show you what sort of traps to buy, and tell you about what you need to do in order to get a (free) licence in order to catch crayfish. Then we go out on the kayak and show you how to bait and set the pots. We catch some crayfish from the river, take them home, and purge them in freshwater overnight. Then I show you how to prepare and cook them. Finally a really simple recipe - they taste great!

Fantastic video. Glad to see you again on youtube!
Thank you so much Andrea my friend
Yum, happy days 😋
Tasty and free... I caught the mackerel bait, whilst fishing from my kayak
Just to let you know you should pull out the middle but if the tail just give it a twist and pull it gets out the intestines (poo sack) that part your also eating in the tail
Ssssh
Nice video
Didn’t realise you’d made this vid til now. I wonder how effective those nets will be once the water gets cold. I think you should find out!
Charlie, I suspect the crayfish are not so active when things cool down. But autumn still good, I would have been out this weekend, but the weather is too extreme!
They are not really active below 10 degrees and burrow, destroying the banks and beds hope this helps 👍
Hi mate, Chris from Boat Car Adventures here. Could you tell me where is this waterway and can we cruise it in the boat car?
Hi Chris - great to hear from you. Unfortunately that waterway is not easily accessible. However, have you considered Bristol Docks? There is a really good slip up by the Bristol marina just up from the ss Great Britain. I launched there years ago in the kayak, and spoke to the harbourmaster who was friendly.
@@dizzyfish Yes we plan to go to Bristol next week. I have lost your number to call you.
Do you purge for 24h before eating buddy??
Yes, I kept them in a barrel of fresh water for a couple of days
@@dizzyfish I'm going to get some at the weekend I live on the river tee's not shore if the river tees has them ...I'm from down south Northampton...the River nene has a Abundance off them ...fingers crossed...just going to use Thick line Wrapped around smoky bacon thay like that...!!!Nice one pal!!
My only concern is the type of traps you use , you might end up trapping an Otter , I personally would use Swedish style traps which allegedly are Otter proof .
Thanks Harry - I did take advice before purchasing my traps regarding otters - when I applied for my EA licence to trap, there were strict regulations regarding the sizes of the trap entrances specifically to protect otters. It sounds like maybe you know of an even better design of trap which are otter proof
Did you gut them before cooking?
Yes, I did - I think it was in the video, but I might be wrong
@@dizzyfish No it wasn't, you need to pull the digestive tract out from the tail end, you didn't do it.
@@scottjohnstone6204 I did pull the tract out, as I always do, but forgot to include it in the video unfortunately
You need to leave them overnight if you want to catch more than a couple a trap. They're nocturnal!
Yo
Leave the pots over night. Signal crayfish feed at night
Thanks Jeremy - I definitely have caught more when I leave the pots overnight, so I think that you must be right
Where's the intestine sack ?
Hi Luke - I removed the sack after the crayfish had been humanely killed. You pull off the middle tail fin; the sack comes out with it
@@dizzyfish thanks, I'm trying if for the first time this weekend so I'll give it a go 😁
Maybe you should check the rules with regards to removing them alive to your home. It's illegal to remove live crayfish from the bank they have to be killed on site.
Mate, who cares, as long as its not the UK natives the Signals can be taken away dead or alive as they are destroying our eco system. Dizzy fish great video mate, do not worry about the keyboard warriors and purge the hell out of them bugs.
Bullshit reply.
You need an Environment agency permit for any particular stretch of water (CR1) and permission from the landowner. Only non-native species can be taken and must not be returned to the water. The permit needs the NGR (grid ref) for the upstream and downstream limits of where you want to trap. Gloucestershire canals do not permit trapping as I found out well into the process.
thought its illegal to catch and remove crayfish
Yes, for native uk crayfish… these are invasive American signal crayfish, and it is legal to take them if you have a licence, which I do. It’s all in the video
@@dizzyfishif I vgot a license for crayfishing,do I need any other license for to keep them and eat them?
@@kestutismarkevicius3264 his licence is only to trap them, You actually need a whole other licence to take them away from the banks alive.
@@dave311281 but if they non native?
@@kestutismarkevicius3264 Even if there non native mate, the American signal carries a crayfish plague that is deadly to native species. the problem is this plague can be transferred by boots/wet equipment and you might involuntary infect other lakes. Best to just get a licence to trap and kill them on the bank then take them home to eat. a lot of people will tell you " there invasive who cares" but that can actual makes things worse, which is why you need a licence in the first place so they can track the movements :P
Got low blood sugar or sumin? you shaking worse than Michael j fox on a hoverboard
Ha ha! I must have been having a bad day
You need to declutter your kitchen,
Ha ha! I guess I’m more of of a fisherman than a chef. I hope you enjoyed the video, despite the state of the kitchen
what a miserable sod, good video
Thankfully you don't need to live with miserable Mr Clutterbutt
Why do you throw away the heads and shells ???.Put them in the freezer and when you have a big enough bag you can make the most delicious stock. Then cook the crayfish in the stock.
That’s a great idea Tony, I will definitely have to try that next time
