literally, just hearing two female directors just talk about movies and their art is so incredible and inspirational.
i hope one day you’re one of the directors we’re seeing in conversation here!! :D
Who else would kill to see Emerald Fennell's 1,000 page mood board for PYW?
God, yes. This movie is my current media obsession. It’s so compelling
God yes!
i literally googled it as soon as she said it and i didn't expect it to be online but i'm still sad it's not :((
If she released it as a book, I'd have 5 copies of it. And the full playlist too, please!!!
I hope that a “Writer on Writer” series happens
YES
Good call 👍🏻
Aaron Sorkin must part of the series at all cost
Aaron Sorkin and gillian flynn would be the dream
@@gabriellecarvalho2614 Or Steve Zallian with Quentin Tarantino Or Jordan Peele with Kevin Williamson Now those would be interesting to see
I remember in my film class my professor told all the girls “ladies if I’m completely honest, I would suggest you switch careers. Women can’t be directors” I remember feeling like such a loser after. seeing these two successful women have incredible award nominating films fills me with hope that one day comments like that won’t exist in the world and the film industry won’t be dominated by men
ughh.. your professor reminds me of people in my life who kept saying "medical school is not for girls". People who think this way are wayyy out of fashion. It's kinda disgusting that in this day and age some people still think this way. I wish you all the luck!
@@reemahmed2104 thank you and yes! That’s why we gotta change that mindset
wow i never thought that the sexism in the film industry would be starting in film school with the professors shit that is an immediate disqualifying comment sorry but if you think that professor you don't have shit to teach us. Sorry, he took that from you hope your peers didn't adopt that idiocy and myopia. what an ass.
And what was his justification? The only thing I can imagine is that people thought and probably still think that the director must be tough, strict, unyielding .... that's why I like what they're talking about in this video, that it's not necessary at all .. and I'm not happy just cos the film industry, but their words cab be apply in general, which is even more important!!
both these ladies come from well off well known families... your teacher was right
I can clearly imagine Cassie and Nina were just like Molly and Amy in high school. Is almost like "Promising Young Woman" is what happens when everything goes wrong after the end of "Booksmart"
Damn that’s dark but accurate.
Woah, I hadn’t thought of that. Acute assessment!
😭
Ooof
It's interesting to watch this a year later
As a younger actress, these two talking literally makes me say, "Wow, I didn't realize I directors could be like that, it makes me wanna be a director"
be one!!!! you can and should :)
@@KaitlinGaspar I want to be one so badly, but it's so hard when you have no connections :(
Girl same! We could do what they did and try both :)
watch florence pugh’s next film being with emerald fennell. sis is going through all the great female directors in hollywood rn
You meant Olivia Wilde???
@@louvre1954 and Greta Gerwig, I suppose
Olivia makes such a great point about how movies from 50s-60s were so ambitious and dared to experiment. Films like 8 1/2 and Chloe From 5 to 7 really illustrated the inner voice of their directors which made them so much more personal for the viewer.
Cleo from 5 to 7. Also how amazing is it that varda had no film experience she didnt go to film school or even like to watch movies that much, she just felt she wanted to make a film.
I'm not even into directing or anything but these two women and how they talk about their films, they really inspired me
promising young woman was such a phenomenal and powerful film. i still cannot get OVER that ending, so bold. so thought provoking
Loved the part where they talk about "no assholes" and the history of majority male dominated directors in films. Looking forward to watching the needle shift towards more women directors and showrunners.
Timestamp?
@@xavierbeurre8064 I've been sitting here for too long trying to FF to the "no asshole" part advertised. It's mentioned at 16:00 but it's vague. Lame clickbait title.
@@CC-ed4ir they speak very clearly about it at 11:35 pay attention and don't be an asshole too
I love how much these two seem to love each other. It's probably such a unique experience to even talk to another female director in Hollywood, as there's so few of them.
Emerald Fenner is wearing the same sweater as Jodie Comer in a zoom interview about Killing Eve.... Now I want it, strong women in that sweater.
Love them as actors, even more as directors. I can't wait to see what they'll do next. I'm already on board.
Olivia is so incredible. I'm so sorry for all the hate she gets from one direction fans.
Sesame Gaetsaloe it's heartbreaking that "some" of Harry's fans accuse him of lying about his relationship with Olivia because they feel they are entitled to his personal life. Do you hear that sound? That's the sound of Harry closing every door between him and his so-called fans.
It’s really annoying. She is brilliant and gorgeous and talented, she shouldn’t be getting any kind of hate for any kind of reason
it’s directors like these who give me hope for the increasing inclusivity within Hollywood!
yeah, inclusivity is fawning over two white women from privileged families who got to pick up a camera at least 60 years later than the real pioneers. lmao. sure.
@@defaultc00kies63 no inclusivity is also women actually being recognised for full bodies of work in a hugely male dominated industry
@@defaultc00kies63 Everyone’s views are valid and should be considered as such, including white women
@@defaultc00kies63 this isnt the woke take u think it is
@@defaultc00kies63 You're correct in that they're privileged, conventionally beautiful, and white. But can you actually imagine a MAN making either of those films, and fighting hard for those visions? They may be privileged, but they're trying to represent a perspective of the feminine voice in their movies. I feel like it's a freaking miracle that PYM got green lit at all, and it was mightily helped along by the Me Too movement. We need diverse voices in film, but their voices are worthy ones, I believe.
I adore Booksmart & Promising Young Woman. Love hearing these talented directors. Support their films!
Absolutely loved this!! Can we get some more directors on directors? Chloé Zhao and Regina King please
Chloe Zhao and Barry Jenkins had an incredible conversation about their approach and world building. I think it was on Variety too.
nah olivia wilde is my new fave person, her vibes mahn, sheesh, wholesome af! i love where her mind is about everything
Don't particularly love that she cheated on her partner with someone she subsequently cast in her movie and then keeps talking about her "no assholes" policy. Think that's the kind of thing she used to spend a lot of time calling out.
@@Bagheadman wait what?? she cheated? with whom? where r u getting this hot gossip from lool
@@afrosymphony8207 Harry Styles. Not really gossip tho. "lool"
Those are rumors sweetheart but go on I guess
@@Bagheadman she didn’t cheat. They broke up a while before Olivia git with Harry, if they are even together cause that is rumours
Historical. So excited to have these role models finally - to see what’s possible, and to have those stories being told. Different voices. Makes me wish I was a teenager again, growing up with this. So proud of you! Thank you 🙏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌 #rolemodels #thankyou
lmao the world existed before the year 2000, you know? Women have been writers, directors and producers since the 1920s. Two white women from privileged families picking up a camera is not exactly groundbreaking stuff.
Loved promising young woman.
*** THANK YOU SHOUT-OUT *** @Variety, big big thanks for creating "Actors on Actors" and "Directors on directors" series! It seems that you read my mind, because literally a few weeks ago I was thinking that it would be great if you created a panel with directors. No journalist-led interview can compare to these insightful conversations of people who have been in the same places, who can relate and understand each other. Thanks for allowing us to have a deeper glimpse into their work process. PS. Invite Andrew Scott to one of your "Actors on Actors" talks, pretty pretty pleeeeaase...
I have never felt so seen before by a film, thank you!!! This moved me more than I realised I could be
I could listen to these two directors for the rest of my life. I hope to work with this talent someday!
Olivia is so joyous about her job! Loved it!
This is inspiring listening to both of these great women .I'm directing my first film project in school, and its scary to be in charge. Im not sure it ever gets easier, but im trying to have fun with it and treat everyone with respect
Good luck mate!
You are already in a better mindset than most approaching the craft! best of luck with the film
Olivia is SO excited to talk about her craft! Its so inspiring and lovely to watch. Love this woman. Talented, hard working, smart and beautiful. Can’t stand that some teenagers out there give her hate for no reason smh
Damn 2 power women! Also, Emerald Fennel should make an audio book, I can listen to her voice 24/7
This conversation is everything, its glorious, beautiful, fantastic, sentimental, full of pasion for the craft, filled with profound reflections about being a filmaker and made me love this two woman as artists even more
So interesting and amazing to see them discussing all the politics behind a film set and trying their way to make a positive change in the film industry.
Glad this is back up- what a great discussion! Especially that of collaboration vs. dictatorship on set. Looking forward to seeing where their careers go!
I love both of these women, the way that you can truly see how much they care about filmmaking. I especially love how Olivia Wilde cares so much about her crew, on her instagram she really took the time to highlight and thank each one of her crew members.
this did not age well
Such a great interview!!! Thank you Variety!!!
Emerald Fennell is a force to be reckoned with.
Loved this conversation. Thanks for sharing it with us.
What an inspirational, respectful and warm conversation between two women, a pleasure to listen to and learn from.
amazing, amazing listen! Hearing convos like this makes me understand myself a bit better and also gives me permission to explore and have fun with my art!
listening (and watching) two incredible women having a conversation about their directing experience and artistic choices - best leisure time

Such an amazing conversation with two wonderful inspiring women. 💗💗💗💗
I loved this conversation more than I can say, thank you Emerald and Olivia for your contribution and vision to the art form of film making ❤️👏👏👏👏❤️
I love this interview so much.
I love them both, they seem so passionate and knowledgeable
Awesome, vital discussion 💜 both incredible female directors of our time 🎥
I loved everything they said about directing and creating a good atmosphere on set. So much of it is applicable to so many other fields of work!
This two women are amazing and extraordinary role models for everyone.
What a fantastic and charming pairing
So much talent on my screen. These directors are the future of film
So inspiring!!! Love it!!!
Promising Young Woman is amazing wow wow wow
I love this!! Please do more behind the camera crew!
Loved their vibe and both their movies, a really great pair
Gosh these women are incredible! Could listen to this conversation all-day!! Insanely inspiring and beautifully honest. We need more ladies like them - the future is promising :)
Wow... This was so wholesome and exciting

great chat. love to see how this women visualize cinematography. they are so interesting. i wish both of you the best. pd: can't wait to see don't worry darling
Wow, fantastic. These two are so articulate and smart.
I’ve always been drawn to Olivia Wilde since I was a literal 11yo child watching cowboys and aliens, she seems like the best person to work with!
I can't believe this is Camilla. She is acting and directing. Unbelievably talented.
Two great actors who made two amazing films loved booksmart and promising young woman and I’m a guy Great conversation
Inspiring and eye opening
Love "A Promising Young Woman"! Ever since I saw the trailer, I waited for it & it's really good! Love Olivia's laugh, its too cute
Amazing convo. Loved the Trojen horse way of looking at good cinema. I feel that's exectly why Parasite is one of the best movies I've seen, it tricks you and plays with your emotions, and PYW does the same.
Thank you for this 🏵🌹
39:33 OMG YES! that's TOTALLY what the film does! its inception with how deeply connecting the whole film is!
Was trying to remember where I know Emerald from... It's Call the midwife!
She was also the other woman in The Crown.
@@da96103 Oh wow that is Camilla. She acts and directors. *chef’s kiss*
Loved this and love the series. PYW is one of my favorite films from 2020 and is an absolutely amazing feat for a first feature. Excited to see what else Emerald can do in her career. Also excited to see Don't Worry Darling from Wilde.
so so excited! 🥳🙌
olivia is so inspiring in everything she does
Two brillant directors!
throw in greta gerwig and it would be THE PERFECT TRIO!!!
YES
As an artist who struggles with depression and anxiety: any genius that comes out manifest *despite* those gaps in mental health, not *because* of them. When I'm working in a team, which is quite often, I do a lot to disengage those maladaptive habits that traditionally have been praised as the moody dark side of male genius (or denigrated as female hysteria) in favor of healthy collaboration.
i'm so in love with this. so excited EF got that oscar nom!
This is so good
Oh gosh, two great & uniquely fresh films talking to each other!
i know nothing about film making but this is so interesting
I just love that I got a Ted Lasso ad before this video played.
Promising young women is soooo good!!!
love moodboards!
Omg yes thank you!!
Love this.
i love olivia so much
I LOVE these women
Amazing!
after this interview i've decided i would trust olivia with me life actually
Aaaaaah I love this video
I LOVE THIS
This is fantastic. Now I wanna see Céline Sciamma on this.
As a 16 year old girl who wants to be a director im dying watching these two
Emerald Fennell has the best voice
When assholes give anti-asshole lessons, you know the world is heading towards a wrong direction.
I feel so fucking inspired by these two....
