Silica gel is silicon dioxide. In the "gel" form its intended use is as a dessicant, that is it controls humidity by adsorbing moisture. Silicon and Oxygen bonds are very stable at physiologic temperatures, and so stable that human enzymes are unable to activate reactions. However, while it may be limited in chemical toxicity, physically it can cause problems.
Some images by Getty. Some images shot by me on a blackmagic pocket 6k camera and a friend's Laowa 25-100 OOOM lens.
These cases are patients who I, or my colleagues have seen. They are de-identified and many instances have been presented in more depth in an academic setting. These videos are not individual medical advice and are for general educational purposes only. I do not give medical advice over the internet.

  • I accidentally ate the silica. The lovely man at poison control immediately asked me, "Were you making a smoothie?" Yes, I was. I had emptied some frozen smoothie ingredients into the blender. I didn't realize that something frozen would have a gel desiccant in it. Since I blended it for my usual 4 minutes, it burst the package and the beads were evenly distributed throughout. I didn't "get it" until I found the packet. Then the man at Poison Control asked how many packets were there? Just 1. He said I'd be fine, just remember to check for packets in frozen food as well as freeze-dried items! Less learned...

  • For those wondering "Why would they need silica gel packets for 3D printing?" - it's to control the moisture content of the plastic filament. The filament that's fed into the 3D printer needs to be kept dry, as when it absorbs moisture from humidity in the air, it can result in reduced print quality, with under-extrusion, stringing, bubbles, and oozing, thus leading to low-quality and fragile printed parts.

Not the same stuff as silica gel, but similar in function. One time the mushroom came into contact with a lot of it when the grate got knocked off the stand, and got some of the damprid powder on them. A friend of mine ended up getting one of these damprid pellets in his mouth despite my efforts to clean the mushrooms. He said it burned his mouth really bad.

It really wasn't his fault or incur that he was mentally weak in any way, he probably went from a perfectly capable and astute business man to completely delusional within days or weeks, and with or without family members present it can go unchecked until it is too late, often resulting in much more serious cases than this. The primary delusion in psychotic individuals is that they are a god or have god like powers along with auditory and sometimes visual hallucinations. It can happen to truly anyone. Many overworked/underpaid individuals do not realize that they walk a fine path between normalcy and psychosis from vitamin b deficiency alone. Ie, college students, are a very at risk group.

    • He either had deficiency or stress induced psychosis or at the very least psychotic features.

    • This is the problem with viewing certain types of success as a measuring stick for worth of a person or success as a whole. Comparing ourselves with others is fraught with issues either way because it can go away in an instant with a health crisis etc. High values, character and love are what make people successful- not what the corporate industry etc promotes necessarily. In fact corporate values and rewards narcissistic people who actually make their corporations workplace sick--they haven't realized this yet on a large enough scale to make any difference. These people eat nice guys like him for breakfast, lunch & dinner. Hopelessness and depression will push anyone to this kind of behavior so don't think u are above it...
