    • I wanna do this so badly. But the truth is what’s stopped me is the fear of the ocean itself, the fact that so many things can go wrong in such an uncontrolled environment. But I also wanna let nurse sharks and tiger sharks, and lemon sharks, and Caribbean reef sharks, and blue sharks, and thresher sharks, and basking sharks. Soooo I have a dilemma here, either I forget doing it or I conquer my fear of deep water.

  • I was dive program coordinator at an aquarium so was in all the big exhibits weekly, sometimes several times a day. In the Caribbean exhibit I started scratching the rays backs and they absolutely loved it! They’d settle on the acrylic tunnel to get their turn, with some of them coming back a few times. Two would follow me around the exhibit hoping for more attention.

    • Yes, nurse sharks are known as one of the more docile species of sharks, although they have bitten people, and they can get excited during a feeding frenzy like any other species of shark. However, since they are commonly found in warm tropical, shallow waters, which are the same kind of waters that people frequent, they interact more with humans than other sharks. And in certain areas, you can actually walk amongst hundreds of nurse sharks, who have become accustomed to humans. But do not let it fool you. It is still very dangerous.

The conservation status of the nurse shark is globally assessed as Vulnerable in the IUCN List of Threatened Species. They are considered to be a species of least concern in the United States and in The Bahamas, but considered to be near threatened in the western Atlantic Ocean because of their vulnerable status in South America and reported threats throughout many areas of Central America and the Caribbean. They are directly targeted in some fisheries and considered by-catch in others.

  • Once i was diving in cozumel and we had a customer on board that was some kind of guatamalan big shot, so the guide took us way out and threw a bunch of chum out in the water. About 100 nurse sharks came to eat and hang out with us. They were all around trying to cuddle everyone. One of them snuck up behind my head ane got tangled in my regulator cables. It was one of the most amazing things ive ever experienced.
