How to Max-Act EVERY attack - DMC5 tutorial for Nero's Exceed

This is a visual guide of the exact frames of Nero's attacks/taunts during which it's possible to Max-Act. This was requested a while ago, so I'm sorry it took so long for me to get around to making. Unfortunately I don't own a PS5, so I couldn't include latency measurements from it in the end of the video, but I suspect it's somewhere between PS4 and PC. Long story short, your results may vary.

I cannot for the life of me believe that I searched something on KZhead and the exACT thing I need is what I find.
I don't think the devs ever expect players to try to MAX-Act everything or even most moves, even the most dedicated. Judging by the whole gambling theme of his moveset you're meant to react to getting one off imo. That doesn't mean learning them is a waste; moreso that learning the important ones (string finishers and command input moves) are the focus.
Especially with how it's based on the funny frame timings etc.

after this guide, i started to get ridiculously better at Nero my best in bloody palace is 99 i didn't use my breakers properly, but the exceed is getting there as many already said, thank you for this video

great tutorial, Much appreciated. I know this took a lot to put together. It honestly doesn't make sense there isn't a uniform Exceed timing. On Impact or Before Impact across the bored would at least be consistent. It's all over the place & way way more unforgiving than any parry mechanic in the game,let alone hack & slashes. This and the arms breaking(a cooldown would make more sense)/not being manually cycleable are some weird design choices for Nero.
Honestly I kind like that you have to break the arms because it forces you to think about what order you put them in and prevents you from spamming them recklessly
nah the arms breaking is definitely better because it means you can have more power because they know it's not spammable. i'd take being able to slow the entire arena once over some neutered down version of that

I've only played Vergil for so long and felt so alienated after going back to the main story, it will definitely take time to reach a fraction of my Vergil level skill as Nero so thanx a lot for this guide which will definitely give me much needed knowledge on a mechanic I've been sleeping on for a while

Thanks! As far as I'm aware, DT doesn't affect Max Act timings.
Man I really wish there were an indicatior ingame because it really feels like I need outside material to even know where to start with playing this dude well at all
A flash or some manner of subtle vfx would be helpful for players who are unsure where exceed frames are. Either that, or make it so that exceed timings are during the initial frames of hitstop, so the player can naturally intuit the timing themselves.
Very good tutorial! Thanks for that! ; ) But it seems to be so difficult to get the right timing sometimes. It's a kind of Asian difficulty level. ^^ And I'm a person who has a pretty good timing, but I don't make it properly while fighting.

In case anyone is interested I experimented with my Cronus Zen to create a script that automatically Max Acts on every move. What I found was interesting: the "sweet spot" appears to be 227 milliseconds, but it doesn't always work. Sometimes it fills all 3 gauges, sometimes only 2 or 1, and occasionally none at all. This is an automated script pulling the L Trigger at 227 milliseconds _exactly_ on every slash. The conclusion I've reached is that the window for Max Act _itself_ is not precise. It seems to vary, either based on time, number of hits you've made, or some other variable I'm not seeing. The point is, there really is no way to completely "master" this skill because the window for it appears to be somewhat random. A machine-based script hitting the L Trigger precisely every single time produces varied results: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it half works.
I appreciate your testing, but every attack has its own unique Exceed timing. The player needs to press Exceed at different times depending on the move used.
I am really struggling with the timing. I wish the sword had Light markers on when to hit the trigger ex trigger. Most games have a bright flash or a marker to show when counters are charges are tied to frame rate
Honestly I really don't know why they didn't do that with Nero, im pretty sure Vergils judgement cut does have a flash you can wait for to get a perfect version

It's a taunt that only happens at S rank and above.
Ooh that explains it Vergil has a taunt we’re he turns Yamato back into neros arm that’s probably why that one barely happens aswell

Not unless you're on PC, in which case you can use SSSiyan's Collaborative Trainer to swap taunts around.

Is Max Act 1-2 frame links ? how much wiggle room actually is there
That's a solid question. It was difficult to tell, but I'm relatively certain that most attacks have 2 frames (/60fps) where Max-Act is possible. I believe I saw at least one move which had 3, however with the game itself running at 165fps while the recordings were at 60fps, variance in frame timing may have given the appearance of a 3-frame window in the recordings where there wasn't one. I think it would be safest to say that attacks have around 2 frames where Max-Act is possible.
@@TheToasterGent It's insane to think some people can so consistently land 2 frame links on this game. 1 frame links in fighting games are so insanely difficult, and sometimes on dmc5 its not easy to use the visual queues for it. Honestly watching solid Nero players is most entertaining because just thinking about how often they are landing such tight links is nuts

I wish there were more of a reason to choose whether to exceed or not, but since failing an exceed has never made me drop a combo, so I can't hate the mechanic too much. But I mean, there's certainly a reason I mostly play with fixed lvl1 exceed nowadays. 🗿

See, I knew something had to be screwy with the timing. So on top of being super freaking precise, the window is different depending on which hit in which combo you're using. Holy crap. If they don't want us using the feature, just don't include it. It's like auto-assist. I didn't even know it existed until three days ago, thought I'd give it a try. I got capped at A rank on 4 missions because there was no advanced warning about a score penalty. Again, I've made due without since pre-playable Vergil, but it's a rotten thing to do. What if someone needed to use it, like a player using an adaptive controller for mobility issues?
They still didn't let us cycle the devil breaker we have during combat. (d-pad button literally screamed that)

Honestly, the timing is far too strict. Sekiro perfect parry timing was nowhere near this hard, and that game was designed to be difficult.
The thing is you don't need to master this thing to see the end credits while in sekiro it was a core mechanic

Good video that I'm going to use, but this mechanic is genuinely such trash. I get what they're going for but it's just not fun at all. Combine that with the fact that you're basically gimped as Nero if you don't want to spend hours in void mode practicing every single exceed timing until you can at least semi-consistently hit max-ACT and you get a character that just feels like he doesn't want you to play as him. Compare this to Dante, who doesn't lock basic move power behind timing memorization grinding and instead encourages you to practice because he's already fun if you're bad but could be way more fun if you were better. Like, why not just replace this with a simple "perfect next move timing" mechanic to charge the meter then let the player hold LT during attacks to discharge it? It's very similar thematically, except instead of being some obtuse crap that's basically just tacked on to add complexity it encourages the player to learn the normal move timings and manage a realtime resource in combat. Sure, it would be easier, but it's not like the majority of Nero's depth comes from exceed anyway, it's just a very artificial skill floor. Let players focus on the fun stuff: Breakers, grapples, combos, etc. I just don't get it. In 2008 it was kinda dumb but everyone knew 4 was unfinished so whatever. You'd think 11 years later they would have revised it a bit more than just "Oh well we widened the fail timings a bit".
I'd been considering an alternate mechanic for Exceed where holding the Exceed button while pressing up/down on the D-pad lets you "gear shift" into different levels of exceed, and each level would have more differences to the moveset than just improving damage. Though as far as I can tell, there's no way to do such a thing with file modding alone, and I'd likely need to learn C++ or Lua.
Okay so there’s no actual pattern to figure out it’s all just nonsense that you have to very slowly get used to. This is why I don’t like nero because you need to learn this shit in order to beat the game on higher difficulties. I wish I could just play the entire game as dante to be honest.
Agreed. I had a much easier time getting and maintaining SSS with Dante's various kits than with Nero's unforgiving max-act.
