🔌 vs. 🔋 - No Loss In Speed? MacBook Pro M3 Pro Speed Tests

So Apple claims that the speed of the newest M3 MacBook Pro doesn't change between being on battery power and being plugged in. I've never owned a laptop where that wasn't true. So putting this device to the test was definitely fun to do!

  • macbooks have ALWAYS been the only laptops that perform without being plugged in, watch any tech reviewers, they always run it unplugged vs a plugged windows machine,

  • I wonder if there is a tiny thermal thing going on while plugged in and charging. Pretty cool test and loved the edit and graphics you added. Nice.

  • The on battery power, and overall bsttery life made me switch from windows to the m1 series Mac. Thanks for another great review.

  • Wow, it sounds like you really went big. I stuck with the 14 with the M2 chip as wherever I plug-in usually has a display. What other upgrades did you have?

  • Multi tasking would be a good idea to test too.

  • I was wondering if you have made a video on what’s the best hard case for the new MacBook M3 Pro ?

  • *Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is the case for all M series chips. We have an M1 Max chip in our MBP and I vaguely remember Apple touting that performance is the same whether plugged in or on battery power. For the past few years I've never noticed a difference at all. So this might be marketing fluff, though true fluff. It's just not new.*

    • Yes, even the M1 chips had equal performance on battery power vs plugged in. All of them the past couple years (M1/M2/M3) have been incredible machines.

  • Apparently in gaming plugging in triples the FPS for some strange reason, but all productivity tasks, unplugged is the same (and as you noted slightly faster while charging).

    • Apparently that's not the case with macbooks (unless u have low power mode set to "always" or "only on battery"). Any windows notebook - easily. But there very few games on mac os and not a single person would want to be playing for hours running on battery.

  • Something i keep coming across in my time owning macbook pros are dying batteries. Any chance you can check the performance with the battery physically unplug but with the charger plugged in? historically apple limited the performance of intel machines when this was done but i figure with the lower power draw of the apple silicon machines they dont have to if they dont want to? Super niche request but it might be interesting

  • Something to consider is that the most computers today are smart enough to offload bunch of background tasks to a time when the computer is plugged in the external power. So all your background system checks, health check, antivirus checks, cloud sync operations, they are all more likely happen when you computer is NOT on battery power. If you have a desktop, this is not an issue, since you are always on the external power so nothing is postponed and you will experience peak performance almost all the time. Laptops however can and do offload these background tasks so you might have perception that things are slower right after you plug them to the power.
