Undefeated fighters Isiah Thomas& Muraty Gassiev met in what was suppose to be a 12 Round fight on PBC on Spike December 18, 2015, but it ended unexpectedly after 3 rounds.
Thomas (15-0, 6 KOs), who hails from Michigan and was one of the last fighters that Emanuel Steward trained in the famous Kronk Gym before passing away, was expected to make a statement against Murat Gassiev. Gassiev (22-0, 16 KOs), came from Russia to battle Thomas and was keen to press the the action on his opponent.
Although Gassiev was the aggressor in Rounds 1 & 2, it was Thomas who landed scoring punches, setting up his hooks with sharp jabs. Thomas' 4-inch reach advantage played to his advantage in connecting with fierce left hands in the the first two rounds.
In Round 3 however, things changed and Gassiev began to assert himself. As the round came to an end, the Russian struck Thomas with a powerful right hand as the round came to an end, and then followed that with another clear punch after the bell.
It was the second punch, the punch after the bell, that led referee Jay Nady to declare that Thomas was unable to continue fighting, leading the bout to a no contest.

When a fighter is in the heat of battle, he can't always stop right at the bell. That should have been a win for Gassiev.

Too bad, could have been a classic - Thomas clearly had the reach but Gassiev then knew that he could hurt his opponent with a single shot -- would depend on if Thomas had the fuel to jab and move for 9 more rounds: if he could continue to stay outside and jab he could have won on points but a hit from Gassiev in the middle of the ring like the first and it would be over fast. I don't see gassiev beating Briedis or Usyk -- both have superb movement and really good power.
I think that late hit honestly hurt Thomas so I agree with the stoppage.
If I prepared to punch I'll punch despite of one second remaining before the bell, all punchers would do the same. Thomas lost that fight cause he was seriously hurt after that

At 11:27 after Thomas throws a low blow, Thomas puts a forearm to the face of Gassiev right in full view of the ref.

Cheating fighters should be held accountable. Gassiev cheated which is clearly evident in how he celebrated after the punch instead of being apologetic. It was not accidental.

Thomas thought that he could go to scorecards. The corner should have known the rules for the camp's benifit. Luckily Gassiev got away with a draw that kept his undefeated streak intact.

Gassiev when for the telling blows and his chin could take whatever Thomas had, this fight was over from the second round when Thomas lost his nerve.

One of the WORST refs in the biz. IT IS ILLEGAL to hold your arm and glove out in the face of your opponent! Jab, then pull it back. Isaiah Thomas continues to do it right in the face of the ref. Bad ref.

Emotion is irrelevant. The rules still apply. You cannot hit a fighter after the bell. There is no rule that states fighters can continue punch ing after the bell unless broken up by a ref otherwise there would be a lot of refs getting hit.Dmitriy Pak

It would have been a "Pitty Pat" victory for Thomas if it went to the scorecards! Gassiev cared little for Thomas's power and would have eventually KO'd Thomas if it went on! Thomas a good and cool guy in the ring, but not much of a fighter per se! Imo..

The fight was good while it lasted; I wonder if there will be a rematch. Isiah Thomas was out boxing Murat up until getting rocked by that right hand --that shot depleted him. Aside from that, Thomas boxed well. He established distance, jabbed to the head and body, and landed straight right hands and left hooks --of course he wasn't hurting Murat but he was ahead on the scorecards. I'd like to see a rematch.

It's a fight and I don't think Gassiev knowingly threw those last 2 late shots. I think Gassiev was just in the middle of letting his hands go. Thomas was clearly winning and would've won the fight if the same pace before the late shots was kept.

Sam Miller 1st time I've ever seen Thomas fight. I call it how I see it and have no need for insults or foul language to relay my opinion. I follow certain fighters but do watch the sweet science often. If I was a Thomas fanatic you'd have a point. My opinion is not bias being said that I would like to hear your assessment of the late shots. They weren't taps either. They were heavy fight changing shots. Pain zaps energy along with other necessary attributes needed.

Thomas got stunned really bad with a single punch in the first round and was holding the other guy's arm and going backwards which to my mind should be considered a disqualification if you really look it seriously. Boxing needs to check this. This chicken bullshit holding has no place in a man's sport. And so what if it was a few tenths of a second too late? He got the first one bad enough...It happens ALL the time, it's a fight! People get carried away. It is natural action, not ilegal. He would defo lose by K.O later on
