Art education matters, so what’s the problem? | Laura Mack | TEDxSalem
We all know that there isn't enough art being offered in schools, if any at all, but what are we going to do about it?
Interpretation for TEDxSalem V (2018) was provided by student interns through a collaboration between Western Oregon University, TEDxSalem, and the Deaf and interpreting communities of Oregon. Laura is an artist, educator, and art education advocate. First off, i really appreciate the ASL interpreter which makes this video 100 times more awesome and understandable! I am an artist as well and deaf and it is hard to follow my dreams when society does not appreciate art works these days.
I think ASL should be mandatory in primary school where children learn easily. All teachers should be proficient in ASL. Students with hearing problems should integrate with other children, instead of asking them to go to special schools.

So Elementary art was brought back in 2020?
Whoooaa got my mind blown at the ending because of the realization that she had integrated all the elements in the creative thinkers tool box. Before, I was an amateur artist, but I regress into a rookie now. Thanks TEDx Talks for supporting that artist which only wants common good and a bright future for the students in her area. Now, I'm motivated to integrate all my knowledge as well as experiences in art.
We find it difficult to attract teachers who could teach art education in our teacher-training university.

I'm always on the hunt for new opportunities for professional growth and the promotion of art education. But rarely I do I see art education being advanced in any meaningful way. Rather, I see it being marginalized, and I find myself at odds with the basest natures of bureaucrats. I fear the only way to move the needle is to work around an establishment actively conspiring to mire us all in mediocrity. I do hope that I am wrong; that there are others who put education before self, before "career."
I love art and art teachers and artists and creativity. Follow up all ideas and hunches and explore.

Thank you. Very poignant and well put. Although shocking that at that level of education there are no art classes in elementary schools. Lets hope since this Ted talk by Laura Mack, that this has changed for those children and they are receiving a more creative education.
Unfortunately, I know many schools in Michigan have no art and many more are unfunded (including mine). I interviewed at over 100 schools and most had no working pottery kiln (my school does). Elementary art is often 1st on the cutting block as the squeeze is put on public education. :(
Art integration increased attendance in my elementary classroom. I’m all about art integration in all core subjects! I use my videos in a flipped classroom style delivery. 🎨👍🏻

As long as art is relegated to some unnecessary second class or third, fifth, hundredth class thing , instead of being essential to the brain, and as important as math or science or any academic subject, minds will not develop to their awesome potential.
Art allows to develop and weave as Good Society
How are the kids in her program doing after 4 - now 6 years doing? Are their grades higher than the others? Are there fewer behavioral problems with these kids vs. those that aren't?

School never says they don't have time for science class. Art is more important than science. There is a divide in the society between art & science very unfortunate.
Actually, yes they do. My father was told he could only get the open position of 7th grade science teacher, if he started a middle school wrestling program! Priorities get very screwed up!
What about those who are not creative. Don't they stand a chance?
what about creativity & the amount of time the artist has, otherwise its like-currently race against the time.
Yes! My 2nd -5th graders constantly complain about only having 25 minutes for art per week. :(
Where is the study that says creativity that you learn in artclass is transferable to other fields like math for example?

I think it's pointless. How many will go on to be professional artist? very little and I'm an artist myself.

I am afraid you are missing the point. We are fighting here to get more creative practices in schools, not to ensure every kid becomes a professional artist. We fight for art to be taught in schools so that kids might have the option, the excitement and the drive to pursue Art and creative practices in their futures. We want kids to have more options in education, be exposed to more creative thinking, so they can round out their education by applying their creative endeavors to their other studies.
That's not the point. Bringing art back is not just to make kids professionals, but to add more creative and out of the box thinking. To help solve problems, create new ideas, and open new prospectives. There's more to art than just using paper and a pencil, there's so many fine and visual arts using creative thought processes and procedure. This is to teach kids to be more visonary with their thinking, have more insight to what they're trying to solve or even create. There's a creative process to everything, and to things that are made. It helps with their process, and applies to new innovative thought or ideas to help protray what they want to persue in life. It's not just upon the fact of teaching kids to be '"professionals."
transferable skills, cognitive skills, fine motor skills, research, discussions, expression, studies, theory, cross-curricular, history, culture, design, clothing, architecture, music, cars, every day items, movies, tv, communication, collaboration, diverse thinking.. the list goes on.
