LYRICS
loving
hating
hoping
faking
i’ve been digging through the dirt that was left behind
i've been dredging through the mud for it
there's nothing that’s alive or dead inside
in you or in this
the crucifix in my hand's a lie
cause nothing ever kills you
i watered down the pain till the well went dry
so pray for rain
and it gnawed
rose to the top again
back like a long-lost friend
a wretch that i can't defend
oh, my god
is this where the dreamer ends?
dark where the light had been
lost at the war within
and it clawed
back in the world again
here for new revenge
an enemy i can't condemn
oh, my god
is this where the liar ends?
dark where the light had been
lost at the war within
out of myself i feel it crawling
how can i tell if this is the ending
out of myself it began evolving
i am not well, repent i'm guilty
how can i tell if the sky is falling
how can i fix what there is no mending
how can i tell if i am not well
i've lost myself
i have come undone
and all of the horses
and all of the men
won't put it back in place
or bury it where it had been
when all of the forces
have been overrun
you'll whisper, serpent tongue
what you fear you have become
something wicked this way comes
something wicked this way comes

I was fully expecting this to be a heavy song though I'm not disappointed in the slightest. This has such an eerie vibe to it and I'm digging it!
Last song in the album had been a slower one since Vessels. This is actually heavy for their last song compared to the last few.

Starset can do anything and still looks cool
Sometimes the most poignant part of a song can be the deafening silence afterwards where it's meaning sinks in even deeper.
It's really really missing a dramatic ending
the ending was more brutal than any scream it was so chilling and haunting
@@amazinggames4417 I agreeeee!!! The whispering of something wicked this way comes after the loud singing/screaming sent chills down my back
This song explains what it feels like to fall into a trap where you work so hard to destroy what you hate the most only to become that very monster yourself. Right from the get-go, the album works itself up, curating feelings of joy, pride, and then into hatred, contempt and resentment for something, only to communicate to us that we've become that very thing we resent so much. Brilliant play all around, and wish they could do a live set piece of just this album. The deeper meaning is always somewhere in these Starset songs, and I love how it's infinitely interpretable.
So true!
I feel like the song is far darker, hes clearly referring to sin. Its a warning, or some kind of omnious warning to someone who sins or commits wrong, that the illusion will be destroyed, you casted yourself into darkness. The person in question is struggling to distinguish between right and wrong, close to death? He refers to the serpent, the serpent is usually a moniker for Satan, this is really a weird song for starset lol.
@@Elmo914 really doubt it's actually about sin, I feel Dustin is using sin as a metaphor for something else concerning as he's always been pretty anti religion lol
Super late to this but the song is about addiction.
This speaks to my depression. I never really understood Diving Bell until I got PTSD & it triggered a major depressive episode. Then, suddenly, Diving Bell was the only song in my head and I couldn't explain why until I listened to it again... crazy how things can change like the flip of a switch.
i have a similar thing with perfect machine but not because of ptsd but because i had such a strong level of self hatred where this song speaks to that place kind of puts my soul back in place
I can also relate to Perfect Machine, along with Ricochet and Bringing It Down.
Yeah, Diving Bell really hits home, especially when I think about how bad my depression got before therapy and medication.
Same goes for me with Perfect Machine and now Tunnelvision because of my own experiences, they weren't good 😒

“Something wicked this way comes” perfect ending to an album warning of the impending doom that approaches. Absolute chills. Masterful end to a flawless album
I don’t know why, but this song feels like a cliffhanger more than an ending. It’s just that because of how eerie and suspenseful it is, I feel that it’s hinting towards something bigger. Nevertheless, I absolutely loved this album and anticipate that it will grow on me big time. This is why I love Starset, because half the time I can’t tell whether I’m just listening to a song or watching a movie (that among many other reasons). Anyway, listening to this album all over again is going to be a huge task, but Starset made sure it’d be worth it to do over and over again.
Transmissions had us set with a great adventure. Vessels had us set on the horrible aftermath of that adventure. Divisions had us caught in a war. Horizons had us in the ending of that war. I fully expect the aftermath of the war to be the topic of the next album.

@@jaydakotawest4401 that is a possibility
@@jaydakotawest4401 The quote "Something wicked this way comes" is out of a famous play called Macbeth, told by Shakespeare. The quote is said by the 3 witches, it alludes to the fact that Macbeth carries the seeds to his own downfall. Why do I mention this? Well bc every poetry reference said up to this point in these songs had a fork of meaning which later had parallels to what it was referencing. Your theory is a good one, trust me no one has brought that up from what I've seen, but looking at this from a logical point I believe Dustin plans to show us what had happened to the Starset Society after this album.

@@annaleepena2790 Severely underrated song. It's goddamn perfect, and also their heaviest song (though Devolution gets close).
rise and fall was lit but wasn’t unexpected
I can't stop listening to this song. The whole album is truly amazing and definitely an emotional roller-coaster, but something about this song just hits different. Like after an all out war with yourself...the darkness (depression, anxiety, ptsd, etc) was the last to rise just as you've fallen. Like winning was futile from the very beginning. The ending is so ominous and harrowing. I really feel this song on a soulful level.
Dude same
out of myself i feel it crawling how can i tell if this is the ending out of myself it began evolving i am not well, repent i'm guilty how can i tell if the sky is falling how can i fix what there is no mending how can i tell if i am not well i've lost myself i have come undone This part in particular has a certain power to it. The lyrics, the way it sounds, there’s just something about it that makes it amazing.
I kinda feel like it's almost a teaser for what the next album is gonna be like, and I'm trying very hard not to get my hopes up.
I actually listen to this song multiple times daily, one of my favorites on this album.
You'll whisper, serpent tongue What you fear you have become What an eerie sound, how both Otherworldly and this one can be on same record is beyond me
I think that it makes sense, since the whole album, and most of the lyrics talk about light and trying to reach the light. But, at the end, every hope to be there has disappeared. I think it's equivalent to grief. Or, at least, it is for me. When you are on the top of the world, and you spiral down to the abyss. You can go from Otherworldly to Somethink Wicked in a flash.
Out of the whole album this one gets stuck in my head the most. "out of myself i feel it crawling how can i tell if this is the ending out of myself it began evolving i am not well, repent i'm guilty how can i tell if the sky is falling how can i fix what there is no mending how can i tell if i am not well i've lost myself i have come undone"
This is such a great ending to the album. It leaves the listener with an eerie feeling, like calm before the storm, and goes especially in theme with Devolution and Infected. To me it serves as impending doom. "Something wicked this way comes". Now honestly, I was expecting some heavy screams there at the end, but instead got something better - deafening silence. Louder than any sound, as you try to take in and assimilate this breathless journey. Absolutely amazing.
I didn't have the song list at hand when watching the live. So Infected stopped playing and I assumed it was over, then THIS started playing. And, my god. MY GOD. I could've died on that instant because I was so suprised, but, this track's just too good to let me die. Now it's my best memory of the release, and I absolutely adore it

Same here. I listen to Starset more than all other music combined. Loving this album also
STARSET has a thing for incredible album endings, and this is honestly my favorite one. The grand, epic, vengeful, and in a way creepy vibe it captures is breathtaking.
This album speaks to me as a biomedical engineering student. Which I don't think is an accident considering Dustin himself is an engineer. When you enter this field, you have dreams of changing the world, improving life quality for humanity and designing wonderful inventions. However, there is also pressures to increase profit by eliminating costs and cutting corners. Other times it's "natural" side effects. Sometimes creating new things that were intended to improve people's lives comes at the price of mental health, the environment, people's jobs, etc. And a lot of the time, these side effects are not expected and only discovered after the fact. And I think that is one of the major themes of "Something Wicked": seeking to help others but at the same time becoming horrified at the realization that you have created more problems for people that almost seem to dwarf the original problem in the name of progress. Starset tends to focus on AI, transhumanism, and social media and their psychological impacts, particularly as these are some of the newest additons to human capability and are representative of what a ton of engineers percieve to be the next big thing in engineering (such as in Icarus and Symbiotic's music videos). But it doesn't have to always be the new and shiny. I myself have a deep interest in cardiovascular medical devices because of the increasing rates of cardiovascular disease. A couple of months ago, I attended a seminar presented by an engineer working in the industry that develops surgical instruments, cardiovascular implants and wound care. The devices she discussed were very intriguing and geniunely seemed livesaving for patients and medical providers, but I couldn't help but shiver at the thought that all of these devices were single use plastics and would likely become biohazardous medical waste in our already polluted world because of the strict FDA regulations and safety requirements under the class III medical device controls. When I asked how they handle the disposing of the used devices, I was told that it was "not a priority" as much as following FDA guidelines. This doesn't even scratch the surface of the engineering ethics that Starset regularly refer to in their songs, particularly the two basic questions of "Can we do it?" and "Should we do it?".
This is such a deep and profound comment. It goes to show how little regard humanity has for the consequences of their actions. I remember Dustin mentioning in his Interview or Vessels that the album was about the different directions the future might take and I can see how this fits in eerily well with the themes of that album. I'm not sure if you read the Prox Transmissions, but that was one question that settled in the back of my mind with "The Everything Machine." Humanity focuses so much on what's new and what can be done, that there's little regard for what's outside of that and the consequences it would bring. The point of the novel was a critique on monopolies, but essentially that IS what's going on with pollution where those in power can do what they want while those at the bottom and future suffer the consequences...
“By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” They couldn’t have picked better quote! It really conveys the message of become your own worse enemy.
Can't wait for the next album!
What a cold cry mannn. This is unexpected of you Starset. The gutturals, screams, the whisper in the outro, such massive bridges. I am in love with this one. What a beauty in the pain over here.
I've said it many times, but starset needs to make a full length movie

God... the atmosphere this song carries is so outstanding... these lyrics, the story of it, the symbol being an inverted (or anti-) star... and that ending... that gives me goosebumps. Great job!
I'm speechless. Starset and co, you never disappoint
If this isn't the anthem for depression, I don't know what is. Maybe it wasn't written to signify that, but, at the end of the day, music is "personal" to an extent, and, my god, does it sum up depression perfectly. It's an amazing song regardless. The whole album is mega and this is the icing on the cake.
