LYRICS
loving
hating
hoping
faking
i’ve been digging through the dirt that was left behind
i've been dredging through the mud for it
there's nothing that’s alive or dead inside
in you or in this
the crucifix in my hand's a lie
cause nothing ever kills you
i watered down the pain till the well went dry
so pray for rain
and it gnawed
rose to the top again
back like a long-lost friend
a wretch that i can't defend
oh, my god
is this where the dreamer ends?
dark where the light had been
lost at the war within
and it clawed
back in the world again
here for new revenge
an enemy i can't condemn
oh, my god
is this where the liar ends?
dark where the light had been
lost at the war within
out of myself i feel it crawling
how can i tell if this is the ending
out of myself it began evolving
i am not well, repent i'm guilty
how can i tell if the sky is falling
how can i fix what there is no mending
how can i tell if i am not well
i've lost myself
i have come undone
and all of the horses
and all of the men
won't put it back in place
or bury it where it had been
when all of the forces
have been overrun
you'll whisper, serpent tongue
what you fear you have become
something wicked this way comes
something wicked this way comes

  • This song explains what it feels like to fall into a trap where you work so hard to destroy what you hate the most only to become that very monster yourself. Right from the get-go, the album works itself up, curating feelings of joy, pride, and then into hatred, contempt and resentment for something, only to communicate to us that we've become that very thing we resent so much. Brilliant play all around, and wish they could do a live set piece of just this album. The deeper meaning is always somewhere in these Starset songs, and I love how it's infinitely interpretable.

    • I feel like the song is far darker, hes clearly referring to sin. Its a warning, or some kind of omnious warning to someone who sins or commits wrong, that the illusion will be destroyed, you casted yourself into darkness. The person in question is struggling to distinguish between right and wrong, close to death? He refers to the serpent, the serpent is usually a moniker for Satan, this is really a weird song for starset lol.

  • I don’t know why, but this song feels like a cliffhanger more than an ending. It’s just that because of how eerie and suspenseful it is, I feel that it’s hinting towards something bigger. Nevertheless, I absolutely loved this album and anticipate that it will grow on me big time. This is why I love Starset, because half the time I can’t tell whether I’m just listening to a song or watching a movie (that among many other reasons). Well bc every poetry reference said up to this point in these songs had a fork of meaning which later had parallels to what it was referencing. • This album speaks to me as a biomedical engineering student. Which I don't think is an accident considering Dustin himself is an engineer. When you enter this field, you have dreams of changing the world, improving life quality for humanity and designing wonderful inventions. However, there is also pressures to increase profit by eliminating costs and cutting corners. Other times it's "natural" side effects. Sometimes creating new things that were intended to improve people's lives comes at the price of mental health, the environment, people's jobs, etc. And a lot of the time, these side effects are not expected and only discovered after the fact. And I think that is one of the major themes of "Something Wicked": seeking to help others but at the same time becoming horrified at the realization that you have created more problems for people that almost seem to dwarf the original problem in the name of progress. Starset tends to focus on AI, transhumanism, and social media and their psychological impacts, particularly as these are some of the newest additons to human capability and are representative of what a ton of engineers percieve to be the next big thing in engineering (such as in Icarus and Symbiotic's music videos). But it doesn't have to always be the new and shiny. I myself have a deep interest in cardiovascular medical devices because of the increasing rates of cardiovascular disease. A couple of months ago, I attended a seminar presented by an engineer working in the industry that develops surgical instruments, cardiovascular implants and wound care. The devices she discussed were very intriguing and geniunely seemed livesaving for patients and medical providers, but I couldn't help but shiver at the thought that all of these devices were single use plastics and would likely become biohazardous medical waste in our already polluted world because of the strict FDA regulations and safety requirements under the class III medical device controls. When I asked how they handle the disposing of the used devices, I was told that it was "not a priority" as much as following FDA guidelines. This doesn't even scratch the surface of the engineering ethics that Starset regularly refer to in their songs, particularly the two basic questions of "Can we do it?" and "Should we do it?".

    • This is such a deep and profound comment. It goes to show how little regard humanity has for the consequences of their actions. I remember Dustin mentioning in his Interview or Vessels that the album was about the different directions the future might take and I can see how this fits in eerily well with the themes of that album. I'm not sure if you read the Prox Transmissions, but that was one question that settled in the back of my mind with "The Everything Machine." Humanity focuses so much on what's new and what can be done, that there's little regard for what's outside of that and the consequences it would bring. The point of the novel was a critique on monopolies, but essentially that IS what's going on with pollution where those in power can do what they want while those at the bottom and future suffer the consequences...

Maybe it wasn't written to signify that, but, at the end of the day, music is "personal" to an extent, and, my god, does it sum up depression perfectly. It's an amazing song regardless.
