This was an iconic moment for me. Playing "Grandpa", a guitar originally owned by Mary Lou Lord, Kurt Cobain and Elliott Smith was a visceral experience. We had a short amount of time and so this was filmed in one take only. Thank you Keaton Yoo for capturing the moment.
I'm a huge fan of Martin Guitar, I want to be a part of their history. If you are too, let me know in the comments below. If you were inspired to play a Martin Guitar by watching one of my videos, let me know by emailing GuitarStories@maryspender.com

    • I've been watching your channel for some time now because you are artist, not just a guitar player/singer/songwriter and absolutely original at all. You make even "covers" your own, I respect and appreciate that. I have a 1971 Martin 00-18 my mother (my biggest fan, She even named me after Eddy Arnold, RIP Mom!) purchased for me in 1971. I've had the guitar for 51 years and just had the neck reset for the 1st time. Now it plays really well again and sounds amazing. Big fan of Martin Guitars.

  • After losing 2 fingers (index&middle) on my strumming hand in a work accident I wasn't sure if I'd ever be able to play guitar again. Two years later and I finally booked a session at my favourite studio to record a few songs and make a new start with my musical journey. This year I decided to go all-in and get a proper custom Martin OMJM-28 to tell myself I'm still in the game. It is by far the most wonderful instrument I've ever played, owned and loved. I'm ready for the rest of my musical endeavours.

  • I've been moved by this song three times in my life. The original when I saw the video premier on MTV, when I heard Tori Amos' cover, and today. Thank you Miss Spender. You are a phenominal talent and so happy to be along on this ride. If at all possible, please get this track on streaming services. I think it's a magnificent homage to what this song means to music history when compared to what you are doing in this more modern, internet age. I am going to avoid standing on a soapbox explaining that in full detail, but those that know, already know. In any event, thank you again for sharing this moment with us.

    • @@rickaitkins6539 It has more to do with the song and what happened to the music industry and what you heard on the radio after this song. The short of it is that record labels and their execs not only dictated what you heard on the radio and what songs were on the charts, they presumed to know what you like. A perfect example of that hubris is Simon Cowell. He seems to have mellowed on that a bit, but when AGT first started, he acted as if he was the sole purveyor of what was good and that we should follow in lock step. That's not to say there weren't some great songs in the past, but there were so many more great songs you never heard on the radio. I could go on with that, but I that's the basic gist. Mary's cover here, playing that guitar, was quite poignant and highlighted to me that musicians are redefining the industry 1 fan at a time the way "alt" bands did before Smells like Teen Spirit broke, outside of the bounds of major label control. The whole thing, not just her talent and this great cover, is what really moved me.

  • I had a 1968 given to me by my second cousin, rest in peace, who was closer to me than my sibs. She knew Martin was my guitar choice because it was and is the guitar of greats, because it had the perfectly balanced sound of a Martin from the bottom string to the top. There is no empty spot in the Martin sound. I also owned a custom which I happily gave up before I gave up the D18 she gave me, because she knew it was my dream and my heart's desire as an aspiring singer-songwriter. I was broke and hungry and finally had to sell it. It was my last guitar and most beloved, clearly as she gifted it to me and its sound soared higher than the angels.

They motivate me to play more and expand my musical skills. Second, I too am a Martin fan. I purchased a new D-28 in 1986 and it has been my workhorse ever since. Although not a professional I have played in several church folk groups over the years and found playing my Martin such a joyful experience. This had carried through my now retirement and brings me joy each day. Although I live in the US (Maine), my wife and I have traveled to the UK a few times. Once taking the train from Bradford On Avon to Bristol. Since I have been subscribed to your channel for several years, I had thought of your school days there. I certainly get a kick out of your travels to the US like your time at NAMM and Norm’s Rare Guitars. Best wishes for your future and the inspiration you have provided. Bob P.

    • @@richardharrold9736 so the fact that Nirvana made a critically / industry acclaimed album (albeit not a particularly commercially successful one) without Grohl when Kurt was just 21yo is somehow proof to you that he would never have achieved fame / success outside of the PNW if he didn't meet Grohl? Lol! OK dude. If you say so.

  • I love your version of Smells Like Teen Spirit. I think you have made this song yours. I'll add I've so intentionally not listened to the original song for years. You've given it something more that the original lacks.
