Hello everyone, have come back to my channel. In today's video I will make audio level indicator with LM3915 ic. This is a very common simple circuit. There have been many instructors to make this circuit. But I do it a bit differently, freefrom circut.
Hope you guys will receive it
Components I use:
- 5mm yelow LED x8
-5mm red LED x2
- LM3915 ic
- 1k2 resistor
- 10k pot
-1mm core wire

It is encouraging to see that special purpose chips I had over 30 years ago are still finding use today. I remember there are linear (LM3914), logarithmic (LM3915) and VU (LM3916) versions of these. I recently discovered that inexpensive function generators are still using the ICs I built mine with around 1985 - eg. Exar 2206 and others. I used to have stacks and stacks of Popular Electronics and Radio Electronics magazines. One time dropping off radios at a repair shop around 1985, I asked about an 'Ampzilla" I saw on the shelf with a repair tag. I was told it had been there for years because it was so old - no documentation could be found to aid him with one little component he couldn't recognize. I still had the 1969 edition of R-E with EVERYTHING needed to build that kit. He had it repaired within the week.
Thank you friend!
the VU version probably performs Fast Fourier Transform(FFT). That's a nice thing to have in an IC. Dave's Garage used an ESP32 to do all the muscle work (FFT among other things) for his LED matrix VU meter and spectrum analyser, but now I'm thinking this IC could be paired nicely with a raspberry Pi Pico, as that little thing is powerful but not enough for FFT. This chip can do that with the outputs tied to the Pico's GPIO inputs. You wouldn't know if this IC also can perform FFT on a selected bandwidth for spectral analysis?
@@paulmichaelfreedman8334 I don't know. I'm not very good at going beyond 'cookbook' instructions. I really admire the guys I bump into while browsing surplus stores that can take some obscure items and turn them into something that performs better than the original and even some current devices for less money. They'd never tell the surplus store that or the prices would go up :)
@@charlieross-BRM I just checked out the datasheet (Why didn't I just do that instead of asking, duh!) but it's a very simple setup. No spectral analysis, just analog level to digital conversion for the full spectrum.
I made one of these when I first learned of the LM3915 IC back in 1980. Also, the LM3915 was a major component for steering control in the remote control riding lawnmower I built back in 1981.
Wow!!! 1980! I was in 12th grade High School, and was just getting into LED's, in electronics class, and I think it was an article in Popular Electronics that first caught my eye about the LM3915!!!! I was filled with wonder and excitement! I never used the IC, but sure dreamed of the possibilities!!! LOL :) (I later built a breadboard circuit using LEDs to make a sequencer circuit though, and that quenched my thirst for the time! I was stuck on stupid, for marquee lights, like the old mechanical driven ones at carnivals!)
@@SoapinTrucker Kool. Glad to see there was someone else using the IC back then.
@@latinobazaar LOL Thanks, but I did not get to use it, nor even buy it, I just read about it in Popular Electronics, but sure wished I could buy it! :)
What your age now????
I would never be able to work anything this precise, let alone solder it. It would short circuit and burst into flames. Full respect for your craftsmanship.
Thank you friend!
Hey Schtefan, you are not alone man, I built a radio that never made a sound! So peaceful it was.
Freeform circuits are super neat to look at. Makes me think of an old vacuum tube shortwave radio I took apart years ago. The tubes were mounted and sockets and all of the other components were just point to point soldered between the legs of the tube sockets.
Thank you !
I made one of these in highschool. I then machined a bar of aluminum for the LED'S which I had mounted on a separate PCB and used a ribbon taken from one of my old computers to connect everything so I could put the electronics in a box and have the display on the outside. Worked great 👍. I had plans to make several and make a big display with left and right channels and 5 bars each with filters on each so they would show different frequencies.
Lol what high-school did you go to?
@@jacobpoucher Just public school here in BC, Canada. We had a VERY nice wood working shop. A pretty good metal working shop and electronics. We were lacking an Auto shop which some of the older high-schools still have. But my school was new (at the time) and a full automotive shop was out of the budget. Two of the local schools have a very successful drag racing program which my dad was a part of way back in the day. Worked out good for me though. I was starting into cabinetmaking but discovered I was quite allergic to softwood dust so I switched to welding right after high-school and did that for 15 years and slowly transitioned into a full time welding inspector.
3:10 amazing effect, keep filming this way
That's a work of art! Well done!
once again your steady hand and technique is really impressive
Excellent fitting.. Congratulations..super creativity..
Your devices are works of art!
Good production. Slow work meet great help for viewer able to follows the project with confidence. Highly appreciate.
Thank you friend !
holy molly ! this is going on my speedometer ! thanks for the tip !
Wow your creation is amazing. I love it. I've completed a cultivator science project. You see.
Show de conhecimento 👏👏
Beautiful! Thank you!
Very good. I like. Now my creativity is growing. Don't get tired of creativity.

Simply amazing electronics ☝️😃☝️
looks real to me (edit : thank you for heart)
Thank you!
J’apprécie beaucoup ces petits montages
Nice, it reminds me 1990s. great video
Wow this is wonderful

I am never seen before, i realy like this tutorial
Nice work!
Pretty cool, I was going to buy one
Beautifully done
GOOD TICHING KARTE HO AP THANKS 👍✌️👍👌👍👌👍✌️
hello again my friend 😃👋 just like for the passion of the drone fpv electronics is one of my passion too 🙂👊👍 can't wait to discover more, good Sunday and good hack see you soon😜✌

I looooove these free form circuits. Is there somewhere online that I can find more of these projects?
Imagine a whole dj mixer built like this. This is just one part of the puzzle.
Interesante proyecto
Awesome circuit! Did you just splice and strip a regular aux cable? Also what is the splitter you use to plug in the aux cord and the cord for the speaker?
😲...I like this!
Wow! Im litterally going to make this!!

Your video was very good, congratulations! Just out of curiosity, were you copyright claimed when using this song?
Thanks for your attention. The songs I use are all from the YTB music library, you can see its name in the description!
Muito bom. Good
Amazing! :)
Audio coupling signal circuit is missing. This circuit could introduce noises to the audio net.
Very good
