Explaining the differences between how high-bypass and low-bypass turbofan jet engines work! ⬅️💥💨

In this video, I explain the differences between civilian and military aircraft jet engines using diagrams I borrowed from Encyclopædia Britannica. This includes the bypass, exhaust nozzle, air intake, and even the turbine but I don’t discuss the turbojet core of each each engine as they’re more or less the same. To learn about how the turbojet core works and fundamental principles behind how a jet engine works, click here • An introduction to how... this video was made on 9/20/2021.
I’m sorry for stumbling on my explanation during various parts of the video because my lungs🫁 are in poor health. I would've gone into more detail about how these two engines differ but I decided not to for the sake of simplicity.

  • Great explanation! By the three minute point it was very clear to me why a high bypass turbofan is more efficient.

    • Yeah, they’re more efficient in many ways. Though both engines have their pros and cons, and I’ve actually learned a lot more about jet engines since I made this video.

  • Thanks for the explamation. Would just like to clarify regarding bypass ratios, eg. 10:1. So 10x the air passes outside the combustion chamber? Or is that in the combustion chamber? As it has the high pressure compressor & combustion is occurring there? Thanks!

    @suandis9292@suandis92922 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, high bypass engines are usually defined as having a bypass ratio of 5:1-10:1 or more. Low bypass engines are defined as having a bypass of 0.1:1-2:1 and actually "medium" bypass engines are often defined as having a bypass ratio of 2:1-5:1 though technically a medium bypass engine would imply an engine bypass ratio of exactly 1:1. I hope this helps.

  • Wow, nice diagrams. What is the Venturi effect?

    @sassypatty2666@sassypatty26662 жыл бұрын
    • The Venturi effect is when a fluid accelerates due to losing pressure when flowing through a constricting part of a pipe.

  • 9:10 Correction: Divergent inlet and convergent exhaust nozzle!

    @user-it6tw2pf9l@user-it6tw2pf9l6 күн бұрын
    • That’s sometimes the case, but not always. What I meant is that the nozzle diverges a tiny bit at the very back after converging, the “de Laval” shape as I’ve been studying. The nacelle design is actually way more complicated than I could explain even in separate video dedicated entirely to that subject. I was trying to keep things simple, I’m sorry for the confusion.

    • @@paulshepherd8295 I guess that means that all the aeronautical engineers who work for P&W and RR Trent were lying to me about all of the differences between the two. I read various reports online and asked them if they were accurate, they said no so please don’t bother telling me what I got wrong.

      @ChrisZoomER@ChrisZoomER7 ай бұрын
    • @chrisszumiloski6920 Have you read 'Influence of propulsion efficiency on contrail formation' by Ulrich Schumann? Each generation of engines has become more efficient, largely linked to the steady increase in bypass ratio. The above report says 'Aircraft with more efficient propulsion cause contrails more frequently'. There are other reports that agree with this statement. Only this week there was a report in Aviation Week on work being done to reduce contrails by using synthetic fuels. Why would they spend millions doing this if the engines were not producing contrails? And I hope you realise that my original comment wasn't aimed at you?

      @paulshepherd8295@paulshepherd82957 ай бұрын
    • Yes I do and I know that higher bypass engines are more likely to produce contrails, contrary to what those chemtrail conspiracy theorists have to say!@@paulshepherd8295
