$1700 in US. Also less than 2kg when removing the tripod collar. Seems like a great new lens.
Sure Is
I have the “Fuji equivalent”… 150-600 mm f5.6-8 lens, and it is amazing. The one thing, that Fuji got really right on that lens, is that the focus ring, and the 4 focus buttons on the barrel, are immediate neighbors! This makes combining autofocus with fast manual tuning super fast… buttons for autofocus, rotate ring for manual tuning
I love that you had the lens for a week while all the other reviewers only had it for a few hours. It showed in the quality and depth of your review. Will definitely add to my camera bag.
Thank you. Yes I was happy to make a real world review rather than just a quick video where you don’t learn that much
Such amazing images that make this an outstanding video, even when one's not into cameras.
Excellent review Jan. Certainly got me thinking.
Glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful images, Jan. Thank you for the review.
You’re welcome 😊
Hi Jan, as always a really nice Video 👍 i love the Backlight shot, would be nice to see more of shots like this! Greetings from Austria 👍
Thank you!
Also I always like the stories you tell about how your shots came to be! Adds a lot to it but it's also an opportunity for us to learn!
Great :) Trying to keep it interesting
🤩I loved that I new most of the places you went to🤩I'm picking mine up this weekend😁
Great shots as always Jan. I definitely think I'd like to buy this lens in the future, as a Nikon user I enjoy your fair and honest reviews of different brands.
Glad you do!
Have mine on pre-order, can't wait to get using it. and many thanks for a great review
Hope you enjoy it!
I have looked at a couple of videos this morning. Your photos using this lens were by far the best! You also hit on all the points that I was interested in. Thanks.
Wow, thank you!
This lens and the new 70-180 is joining my kit. Stoked to replace my 200-500 with a much needed update. Love the 70° turn for full zoom.
Great Video review Jan! You are reaffirming what others have said. Yes, this is going into my bag. Made the preorder yesterday. Looking forward to some good in-depth reviews in the near future! Well done to you and Nikon!!!
Have fun!
I've been shooting Nikon for 20 years.... yes, forever. This is THE VERY FIRST LENSE I have EVER pre-ordered from Nikon on the day of announcement!! I cannot wait to see what 900mm shots of the moon and other close-ups of birds looks like on my Z50! Feels like cheating to have this good of a kit honestly.
Bro You and I both. I have the z50 and like it so much I really have no need going full frame at the point. I have the kit lens but I also have the Z 24-70 |2.8S. The images from the 24-70 is the main reason I have not bought the full frame offerings. The images are tact sharp. I use the camera like I use my Dslr. Depending what i'm shooting. The eye af since firmware upgrades are also very good. Anyhoo I can't wait for the 180-600 offerings. Viva La Nikon!
Same here on the pre-order front, I have a Tamron 150-600mm G2 already which needs the FTZ to mount on my Z's but by all accounts this bit of glass is in a different league to my trusty old Tamron and will be native to the mount at least!
Please don’t waste this lens of a Z50, at least get a Z5 for cripes sakes
Thanks for recording in 4k. The video quality and picture quality look great. Makes it easier to judge the lens abilities. Keep up the great work.
Yes trying to make it as clear as possible
All of your shots are magnificent as usual Jan! But OMG The Aussie Kingfishers are beyond amazing! Superb!!! Thanks for sharing that magical shoot with us! Kingfishers are also quite shy and secretive and solitary here in the Eastern US so I could relate to the adrenaline rush for you in getting those shots! And the fact that you did not need to be hidden in a blind is also incredible. Love!
I think those are called Azure KFs (not Aussie). Unless you are calling both the species in the videos together as Aussie KFs 😀
Yes they’re awesome! I guess the fact that I was there before them helped a lot.
I live in Brisbane Australia, there is a river 10 mins walk from my house where we have Azure king fishers. They don't always come out but when they do they are not so shy. Amazing bird.
Had mine on pre-order within a couple of hours of them being available to pre-order! Can't wait to get one and put it on my Z8!
Great preview. Great shots as always and seems like a great value lens for travel or complimentary to the big primes.
Thank you! Yes it’s a nice flexible lens to have with you for sure
Another great review Jan 👌
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the review. I have one on order and I'm anxiously awaiting delivery.
Hope you enjoy it!
What a video Jan! 👌🏻 that kingfisher session looks incredible, I’m surprised how much they sound like our kingfishers here in Europe!? Nikon is really killing the lens game I think, I wish Canon would step up in this area now with some nice (and affordable) zoomlenses and some crazy 600 with TC.
I guess they sound quite similar in most places, don’t think they have much of a variety on their calls in that sense! Agree, Nikon’s lens game is on fire
The backlit kookaburra was a standout for me. Wouldn't think it was you unless there were some bum shots :) Beautiful Osprey images too. Loved this, Jan.
I've seen lots of reviews but your pics are the best
Glad you like them!
My big dream is to have this lens. So glad you showed us around. Great video😁
My pleasure 😊
Just got it! Thank you! Going to check out your photoshop video
Great great great Images Jan. Congratulations. :)
Thank you so much 😀
You had the lens for more time than all the other reviewers. Thanks for such detailed review. I ordered mine..
Yes that was great and I’m very thankful for that. It allowed me to make a review that hopefully shows everyone the real world impact and helps with the buying decisions
Great Review Jan. I'm very pleased it's affordable and has an internal zoom.
Thank you!
What brilliant bird images ! Awesome. And a great review thank you. I am planning to get the 400 f/4.5 but your images got me thinking...
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the review!
My pleasure!
Looks to be a fantastic lens, can't wait to try it. Cheers, Duade
Thanks mate
Enjoy every second of your video. Great results 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much!
Beautiful shots. Just got the Z9, going to use it with my 600mm //4 G VR next weekend. And will very likely try this 180-600mm soon.
awesome!
My goodness - your photos are soooooo gorgeous! And you don't even have to leave your yard! Your work makes a very compelling case to buy this lens.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for the Review!!!
My pleasure!
Great film review Jan of a fantastic new lens from Nikon, this will prove to be one of the most versatile lenses made by anyone! Gotta love the all internal zoom too, just like my loved Nikon 200-400 f4 vrII lens. 👏😀👍
Thank you! Yes the internal zoom is very nice
What settings do you use to get sharp videos? Great videos!
The kingfisher images are awesome..as usual fantastic video...yes this lens is going to sell like hot cake for sure
Thank you! I think it will too
Well the internal focussing and fluorine coating on the front element are not things I was expecting on an lens without the S logo. It is sharp especially for the price point. I like the thoroughness of you videos here in Australia. The MTF charts are very impressive for the price point and the bokeh seems to be really good for an entry level birding lens. Thanks for the images of the Kingfishers. Brilliant work!
Yes it’s well made and very well priced
Great review and info shared, Jan! Just pre-ordered mine today via NPS 😊 Also, I ordered and enjoyed your MasterClass but it does seem easier when you do the edits, instead of me😮
Thank you! The more you do it the more natural the editing will fell. I’ve worked on it for literally decades 😀
Great Review! Thanks for this! Currently I use the 200-500 on FTZ and trying to decide if it is worth the cost to move to this?
Thanks Jan for this informative video, looks like a great lens - good times for Nikon Z users!
It really is!
Grey video! Some incredible shots as always! Just jealous and wish canon had done more with the 100-500 to be more competitive in this space
Thanks! I don’t really see this competition going with the 100-500 as much cause of the size difference. In terms of reach yes
@@jan_wegenerhow do they compare in sharpness?
Yhanks for the video Jan. How do you compare this lens at 500mm with the 500mm PF lens?
Been a Canon guy for 30 years. Have given a lot of recommendations to those looking to buy into a system. At this point, I can't say I'd recommend Canon to anyone. From the closed RF lens system and other companies delivering some awesome lens choices that are affordable to regular people, Canon needs to re-evaluate the decision makers in their company.
Very true...
Canon was never an options for me. Too much cripple hammer on their cameras and they think they can charge two times the price for a lens. I am not an idiot.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas I go from Canon to Nikon or to OM1.
Wowsers. The Kingfisher photos are amazing!!!
Thanks!
Awesome video your so lucky to have such gorgeous local birds I’m currently shooting R6 & r7 with the rf100-500 but I love that preshoot feature but the rolling shutter kills the pics so I’m now looking at stacked sensor body with the preshoot feature so been tempted with the olympus om-1 but the lack of crop ability is making me think Z8/9 but I’m going to have to px r6 r7 and the rf 100-500 then prob get a sigma 150-600 till I can get the Nikon version talk about having sleepless nights pondering which way to go lol
Totally love that this is internal zoom!
A good first look. I wasn’t planning on ordering it but the $1699 price tag got me and I just did.
Yes that’s crazy low!
Thanks a lot for your video and content! The last two years I had the 200-500/F5.6, a great valuable lens for me. The 180-600 will be a worthy successor, tody I preordered.
Thanks for sharing and congrats!
Nikon definitely has the best wildlife lens lineup now. At least in the medium-high end range.
what a great review , If i could get shots in my backyard like yours I'd be ecstatic lol
Thank you! It does help to have some nice birds around
Well done, this shows off the lens well I just received my copy after ordering it on the first day. I was excited until I found out this lens does not have Focus Memory Recall with Z6, and this was one of the reasons I purchased this lens. Nikon informed me that I need a newer Z Camera for this function to work, the examples were Z8 and Z9. I do not have other z cameras to see how this works on them. If the lens had a second L-fn2 button it could work like the 70-200mm f2.8. This 180-600mm is a consumer lens, that needs new updated z Cameras, yet the Pro lens works on the older z Cameras. My information is from communication from Nikon Canada support.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I hope to buy this lens in the near future. I really like how it does not “telescope” when you zoom in and out. Rotating the ring is a great feature! My current lens, 100-400mm, is a wonderful lens but it doesn’t quite have the reach I’d like and the telescoping action creates more camera movement which affects stabilization in my experience.
Great review, thank you very much! And wow, these Kingfisher shots are truly amazing! Your pictures really pay tribute to the beauty of these birds, they shine! Thank you for sharing. And I also really love the backlight shot of the Kookaburra. Now a Sony A1 + 200-600mm vs Nikon Z9/8 + 180-600mm would be great. ;-) And I'd also be curious to see a review of all the prime 600mm or 400mm lenses of Sony, Canon and Nikon. And of course the OM-1 with the 150-400 TC lens. But haha, I think I should spend less time watching review videos but go out in the field instead and actually take pictures by myself. ;-) But you really do the best reviews on youtube imo. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you! I will see what I can do 😀 talking gear is fun but so is taking pictures
Merci pour cette good news et cette belle photos original sous exposée.
Thank you
Great review Jan, thanks! Even more exciting than the news of this particular lens being introduced is IMO the movement going on in the full broadness of camera/lens brands, to invest in developing a mid-end wildlife lens that takes spectacular shots (I have been using the Sony 200-600 for quite a while now). It makes wildlife photography more accessible and challenges everyone to become better photographers.
Thank you! Yes, many nice options out there now
Just pre-order mine and selling the 200-500mm. Great video as always.
Good choice!
I placed a preorder today.
If I didn't have shoulder problems I'd be switching straight back to Nikon from the OM-1 for this lens. Looks amazing. Lovely photos!
Thank you! Sorry to hear about your troubles
Very nice in-depth characterization of the lens' capabilities! Kudos on being selected as an early reviewer. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on how the Nikon Z8+180-600mm compares to the Canon R5+100-500mm lens combination.
I will make a video with a few of these lenses soon
great review! and so quickly delivered given it was just announced yesterday. I've been looking and very much considering the nikon z 400mm f4.5 but after checking what this lens delivers at this price through your video i'm almost certain i might choose it instead. Extremely versatile let's see more image quality colors, sharpness, bokeh rendition, focusing abilities etc compared to the 400mm f4.5 and i'll be sold. You got great photos to demonstrate this potential beast. Thank you for your very detailed review. Finally Subscribed!
Don't!!!! I shoot with the Z8 and the 400 f/4.t, I came via a Sony A1 and 100-400 tester, and a long term 2 years with a Canon R5 and 100-500, and I cannot tell you how much of a revelation that 400 f4.5 is. That fast aperture is an astonishingly small and light lens is a game changer, it works superbly with the 2x TC, and all in all it's easily the best camera lens combo I've used. Seriously, this is a good lens I'll probably pick up, but you won't do better than that 400 f4.5, it's a total game changer. No other manufacturer has anything like it.
@@thewatchkeeper3619 thanks for the advice! i just got the Z8 and ordered the 180-600 tho i can still cancel. Your single reply is making me rethink my purchase and just go for the 400mm 4.5 which definitely looks like a better quality lens where this new zoon is just more convenient and looking sharp according to reviews. Man, decisions. Thanks again for taking the time to remind me that maybe my heart still prefers the 400mm 😁
Stellar captures of the azure kingfishers! I'm curious to see how this lens would perform on a more modest camera rather than the Nikon flagship.
Wow. Those birds … which part of QLD are you in, mate? Awesome video and lovely pictures too.
Sunny Coast
Thank you Jan for the great review. I really like your presentation & style, and your captures are amazing!. how do you find the dampening/smoothness of the focus/control ring ? On the 800mm pf it is a bit too stiff for my liking (much stiffer than the Sony 200-600}
Thanks! It’s much stiffer than the Sony but I prefer it
Excellent review..
Glad you enjoyed it
What a strange coincidence that I was thinking about this lens while looking at my 200-500 earlier today. At least now I know I won't be switching brands when the time comes to go mirrorless ha! Great video as always.
It’s strange sometimes how things happen!
Put my order in with Adorama just after the announcement, can't wait to get it!
Awesome
Thank you for review. I got lens now and I have been photographing my only Nikon body Z5 -so I have been using for perched birds. Sharpness wise there is nothing to complain. Colors seem to be also good. Built quality is also very good and zoom ring is better than in Fe 200-600mm. I was today photographing side by side with my R8 and Rf 600mm f11. Both cameras have 24mpix and sharpness wise they actually on par -on the other hand ,R8 has more resolving power despite of the same mpix count. And of course AF of R8 is on a total different level. So I have no start to save to get better Nikon body....
Jan thanks for the video on the 180-600 I have preordered mine, I have a question regarding having vr on with moving subjects/birds in flight eyc, did you notice any CA on the images when zoomed in, as I had an issue with my 80-400 (G f-mount lens) that did have CR/ fringing blue and orange with moving subjects and was asking to see if this is the case with this lens. Also did you ever own the 80-400 and how did this lens compare. Appreciate any input.
Hi Jan, thanks for sharing so many awesome birds with us again 😀 Glad to see Nikon recognizes you as our birding guru, so they allow you to play with it even before the announcement 👍 Canon, take notice please !! Jan's the ideal tester for the RF200-500, the dual TC, the 300-800, .. As for the 180-600, it sure looks like a nice successor to the 200-500 for DSLRs and in the Nikon world it will be the versatile equivalent of our beloved 100-500. And it provides indeed some more reach. But it is significantly heavier (like also the Z8 is heavier than R5), the MFD when zoomed in is double the distance from the Canon, meaning less suitable for near-macro, insects etc .. and it sounds it looks brighter but needs to be stopped down for sharpness which is not needed on the 100-500. I think I'm happier popping on the TC1.4x than switching over to Nikon. But competition is good for all, and I hope it pushes Canon to release the longer zoom I'm hoping for ;-)
You don’t have to stop it down but it was a tad more consistent that way. Agree about canon sending me stuff 🤭
I love your review on this 180 - 600 here Jan , I hope Canon is watching this when are they going to finally come up with A lens like this . So let's see Sony has one , Nikon has one , so where is Canon , another lens Nikon has that can and should also come up with is the 400 4.5 and Jan have you tried using that lens . Great equipment review as always there Jan .
Great video and as a Sigma 150-600 User waiting for this lens I am going to pre-order - thanks!
Hope you enjoy it!
@@jan_wegener thx 4 responding , sure I will enjoy the sharpness and quality but also I guess its hard for me to estimate the impact of having Nikon|Nikkor on Autofocus and other functions, especially having just gone up ther learning curve on Z9 Autocapture ( which seems ludicrously good ?) will you be doing a video on that for wildlifers 🙂
Great Great Video and what I like is the objective review given the price point and the target market. Nikon did a great job here for those of us that want a one lens wildlife set-up. The 200-500 was very good but had it's dust problems and a few other issues with focus turn and just that 100mm to short for Bird specialists. This lens is a winner and with the Z8 and hopefully the Z6iii and a potential DX body will be a real winner for the non professional that needs a more affordable option. Fact is that the Nikon Mirrorless options for wildlife is expensive and lack a R6/A7iv with a 200-600 or 100-500 option. The Z8 is very good but remain an expensive camera. I am fortunate that I could trade in a bunch of old gear to buy the Z9 with the 400 f4.5. I always used the Nikon 300 f2.8 with the 1.4 or 2.0 TC. My first choice camera given the fact I am not a 20fps shooter would love a Z6iii with 36mp and a better focus system that shoot 10-15 fps. The Z9 is amazing but I always feel for my part time photography is an overkill and a lot of $$ not used often enough.
Been waiting for this one. Currently using the Sigma 150-600mm Sports lens on the Z9, which is a great performer, but I'd definitely be happy to lose 700g of weight and gain better image stabilisation! Even though the Sigma is excellent, it's an older lens and isn't perfect for video (IS tends to do weird stuff). I'm very much a backlit bird photo fan, so I love the backlit kookaburra!
Thank you! That lens will be an upgrade for sure
I'm a 150 -600 Sigma upgrader and very excited about the stabilisation. taking a handheld video is really not optional. Its been a good workhorse , but time to move onwards and upwards to the 1st division and the 600 prime in a couple of years maybe 🤔
I bought the 180-600mm rather than the 600mm and the money I saved paid for half of the Z 800mm. Then I upgraded the 180-600 to the amazing 100-400mm S lens. With these 2 lenses that can both be put into a carry-on bag, covers the entire range of 100mm-1,600mm. (with TCs). The 100-400 has very close focusing and fits into the case for the 70-200 lens.
Already pre-ordered! Very exciting...as a Z9 owner using an old 150-600m Sigma Contemporary lens, I was waiting for a Z lens equivalent, and this is just the ticket!
Fabulous! It will be a nice upgrade especially when it comes to the stabilisation I’d say
Ditto 100%
Yes! Finally Nikon has made the lens I was waiting for. It look pretty decent too; glad the zoom is internal and it has function buttons. The only downside for me is that the tripod foot is not arca swiss, but I guess you could attach an arca swiss plate to it right?
Yes very easy to attach a plate
Great video. How is the image quality with a NIKON Z TC-1.4X TELECONVERTER ?
I wasn't able to test that
will most definitely end up in my bag. Will try to sell my 200-500 before too many others do.
Nice
great video Jan thanks. I saw a DPReview's z180-600 blurb and was shocked (again) by their sample images. Your video gives me confidence that this lens can deliver on IQ. one question...I had a Sony 200-600 and DID NOT like the position of the tripod foot as it sat at the edge of my palm (all the weight of the lens digging in to the very edge of my palm) while using the zoom ring. i had read others mention this issue with the FE200-600. it appears the Z180-600 tripod is in identical relation to the zoom ring on the FE200-600. not good.
It will definetely find a place in my camera bag!. Thanks
Awesome
Jeez, but you do have some strikingly colorful birds in your corner of the world! Have already preordered this lens. It’ll allow my transition to Nikon.
Congrats! Yes we are blessed here with some pretty birds
I have the new Z8 and wanted a Z lens for birding to pair with it. I was thinking about the z400m 4.5 but the z180-600mm with internal zoom at $1700 USD is too hard to pass up. I’m not wild about the variable aperture but from your video the quality doesn’t seem to be an issue. Order has been placed! Thanks again for your thorough review.
For the price the quality is pretty awesome. I should pair well with your Z8
Your take on Canon 100-500 vs Nikon 180-600 ?
Traded in all my Nikon F-mount gear, ordered a Z8 + 24-120 and pre-ordered a 180-600. Took some time to make the decision, but now I am glad I did. The step-up in technology is significant enough to justify the switch.
Awesome
I’ve had mine since September 19th, 2023. Taken around 1500 images. I do wish it was a stop of light better though it is an amazing lens. Came here as a follow up from my last comment to say now that I have it… curious if you plan on doing a review of the 1.4 and 2x TCs.
Motivated to possess one ..........Thnax
My next set is Z8 + 180-600. Leaving Panasonic S1 + Sigma 150-600 DG DN
I buy one ❤❤😊nice shoots 😅❤
Nice video Jan! Do you think this lens would work well with the Z6ii? I was thinking of getting the Z8 and using it with my Sigma 150-600 contemporary but now I think that it's maybe better to get the 180-600 and wait a bit for the camera...
It would definitely work, I would just expect VR and AF to be a bit behind the latest cameras
The bokeh delivered by this lens is nothing short of outstanding! Nikon keeps delivering best in class lenses in every segment. Adding the capability to adapt FE lenses with excellent AF performance with the Megadap ETZ21 adapter (and probably new Fotodiox too), the Z is clearly the most promising system out there.
Definitely will get it soon
Awesome
Good explanation. Like it.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for your review and the beautiful, colourful pictures. I have ordered mine. This lens was on my wish list. The extension to 180mm, all internal adjustment and lighter weight than the 200-500 lens are convincing arguments. I'm not worried about the image quality. For me, it is the future lens for athletics and football photography. (not birds)
Hope you enjoy it!
Jan, wish you made a video on how to use your pre-sets and what difference it would make to the photograph… I want to buy but would want to a video first … so many others may be waiting for that video as well ….
There’s a few 😀 Some in here kzhead.info/sun/mst7ZciZsGp3Z3A/bejne.html They’re very easy to use. Just one click and there’s instructions in the file too
Congratulations and thanks! Beautiful videos and pictures. Fantastic . I would try a Z8 with the NTZ adapter and the Sigma sports 150-600mm I have used with mi Nikon DSLR D810. Best regards!
Thanks for sharing!
Been waiting for this so looking forward to using it and also with 1.4TC for extra reach. Might mean my 100-400 gets replaced, maybe with 70-200.
Nice
Beautiful colors!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nikon is on a roll… best collection of primes and zoom lenses at all price points with fantastic cameras … we just need a Z500 … DX mode enabled 😁 By the way Great Shots Jan 👌🏻👌🏻
I’m a Canon shooter but Nikon has been killing it lately with all these excellent releases! I would switch to Nikon if I could afford to do it atm
Their lens line up is pretty crazy now!
@@jan_wegener yes! They have been realizing some amazing lenses
Stop the fleecing and switch now
