Penn State wrestling star Carter Starocci speaks with media, including NSN’s Joe Smeltzer, about a variety of topics, including what happened at the end of the match between Jordan Burroughs and Mitchell Mesenbrink, on Day 2 of the U.S. Olympic Trials Saturday, April 20, 2024.

  • Jordan never said he would try to “hurt”your injured leg. He said he would “attack it” to win just like Bo will in a cage with a guy who is hurt someplace. Mitch attacked JB after the whistle all match and was hit 10 seconds in with a club … nice omission.

    • this young man, Carter S, sounded great until he said "if it was me I would have spit in his face." That was a real misstep and I'm sure his coaches do not appreciate that. Messenbrink did the right thing and it made JB's actions look juvenile. This statement kind of mucks it up. I think all that hype about the knee comments played a role in JB's energy. He looked low and he looked uninterested; frustrated and a little defeated. I feel bad for JB but wrestling the way he was would not have been enough in France.

  • Fisrt off, Storroci is right in this interview and I like him... Second.... Penn States whole crew has been nothing but ungrateful and disgusting to the man that did the most for Wrestling in America in the last decade (Burroughs). At Iowa, they cheered whoever won and never booed, because they understood that this is the Olympics we're talking about - it's not a college match. We're all on Team America, and Penn State fans need to learn that. Give respect where it's due, and it's due to Burroughs. And Storocci is right, we need entertainment in this sport and Penn State does their best to suppress any personality. The worst interviews in the NCAA are with these guys (who're good guys albeit: Greg K. Aaron Brooks, their 125, etc.). Look, I'm a devout Christian man myself, thank God, but quit saying you don't care about winning. It's the opposite of exciting, and you do care. Storroci is the only guy making things interesting. Thank you, Carter.

    • If being a Christian is calling ppl ungrateful and disgusting, I DONT WANNA BE A CHRISTIAN. The bottom line is, EVERYONE can’t be on the team, and people can root for whoever they chose. JB was a 2 time National champ and quit one year due to an injury that wasn’t as bad as Carters. In Folkstyle, JB isn’t in the top 25 of all time NCAA wrestlers. Penn State fans don’t need to learn anything, especially from the biggest hypocrite online. Now go throw some holy water at your tv, and send some more money to Joel O’Steen.

      @comesmokewithus@comesmokewithusАй бұрын
    • Tell me what JB did at the WORLD level while in College….Let me answer that for you….NOTHING Factually, JB lost 20 matches in high school AND lost 20 in College. JB was a one time State Champ, and 2 time NCAA Champ. Carter was a 2 time state champ, and was also 2nd and 8th as a freshman. Carter lost 8 matches in HS. Carter won 4 NCAA Championships and if he wouldn’t have medically forfeited had a 100 match win streak. JB took off a year for a knee injury in College, and Carter wrestled through a torn ACL and beat 2 prior National Champs in the process. To criticize Carter for not doing anything on the world level yet, is super hypocritical when comparing it to JB doing nothing either. Lastly, I don’t think that Nebraska wrestling team was setting any academic records during JB’s timeframe, when this current Penn State team has a cumulative GPA of 3.85 and were recognized for that Nationally. • JB just got emotional and punked the young kid. It’s wrestling. Worse has happened. Carter says he would have spit in his face but I doubt that. I would think Penn State gave him more class than that. JB got served by nolf so that’s punishment enough. it is what it is. JB goes down as top two or three ever to do it. Probably the best ever because of his era and the competition. But he probably does have an ego complex because he can’t let go of the fact that he was so great and has an addiction for the glory. So many others before him suffered from the same psychosis. Michael Jordan comes to mind and it’s ironic how they share a similar name. Anyhow. None of this is a dis to JB. I was rooting for him to crush nolf and dake. But he should just concede like cox and hang up the shoes with his head held high. His legacy will always remain.

Many will never make it, but it’s really is so next level, and does separate the men from the boys. Take daton fix for example. No disrespect but he’s finished. He did get one silver world but he can’t beat present competition. He has the collegiate record nobody wants. Second. The next level is the shit. And the only point is that JB (and Taylor for that matter), dominated it. Gable Stevenson I wished came out. But anyhow, I bring this all up just to highlight the greatness of Jordan Burroughs. Both as a competitor and ambassador of the sport. He woke this all back up. Who in the 90’s was really into college wrestling? Wrestling families and that’s it. Jordan Burroughs helped transcend the sport from an interest level. Women’s wrestling has soared! I don’t want to say Jordan Burroughs did that alone, but he surely was a helpful piece with reviving wrestling culture. He has earned respect but it also might have gone to his head.

  • “We don’t care who you are, You’re not welcome over here, you’re the enemy, we don’t care about your accolades, youre in enemy territory, you’re the enemy.” Wow! So much for Jesus, praying, and the Lord. That is the M.O. for PSU Wrestling. Thomas Gilman wrestled there after college to get better for international competition. He said, this past weekend, “I wrestled there for a couple years, they were sort of nice to me, but let me know on a daily basis the he wasn’t one of them. He was still the enemy” What you have here, in my opinion, are cafeteria Christians. The preach the love of god but only practice their religion with each other. It’s situational Christianity. That’s NOT very Christian. Matthew 22:37-39 Leviticus 19:18 I know, there coach, if he reads those passages, will understand. Hopefully, they change their ways. The way they treat outsiders Is very much cult like, in many ways. Pray for them! Forgive them!

    • Liberal Mike, didn’t know you were ordained….If you listen to the latest Gilman interview, he likes it there, and is a changed man IMO. Who’s ur team Mike😇, run through a wall for Coach Iowa?

    • @@TimM-wk1zx June 1993 is when I was ordained. I like the sport more than I support the teams. Ya gotta give respect to Oklahoma, Penn State, Iowa, Ohio State, Mizzou, and so on for their rich history in the sport. I’ve wrestled, competed, and coached for 42 years before I retired. What I love most about the sport is the mutual respect shown to each other by the wrestlers, coaches,& the majority of the fans. I have an issue When it gets contentious. It makes it more entertaining, and that’s important, but ya gotta be careful or it could turn into the WWE. Just my opinion. I could be wrong. But then again, I could be correct.

      @WestChesterMike@WestChesterMike29 күн бұрын
    • It IS entertainment, but certainly NOT SCRIPTED like the WWE. Any reference to it being like WWE is ridiculous. Do we need all the fanfare at gatherings like this….NO, but it’s better than numbers of college teams wrestling in a high school gym where there’s no seating. I think the BJC was a great venue for this, and I’d think the majority of the ppl involved or watching would think the same. I think wrestling is a struggle, is contentious….i mean, we aren’t knitting. There’s going to be emotion, there will be elation and hurt feelings. It’s part of the territory.
