Last weekend I spoke on a panel at a vegan festival, and this question came up--so I knew I had to make a video in case this is a question anyone truly has. Cats are obligate carnivores who require a diet of meat to survive and thrive. If you're caring for an animal, it's your duty to provide them with the diet that they need!

Yes! Thank you Hannah. I too am vegan, and have always taken issue with fellow vegans feeding cats a vegan diet, or claiming they can thrive eating an unsuitable vegan diet. Bravo for saying this. If they take issue, DON’T ADOPT CATS.
But humans are animals with a certain dietary requirement too. We are omnivores and it's very hard and inefficient to eat a healthy, purely vegan diet and if you are okay with feeding cats meat, what's the problem with humans eating meat in the first place? @@alinaqirizvi1441 I'm not a vegan but the treatment of animals in the modern meat industry is very much a cause for concern. Healthwise and planet-wise. Even eating less meat is a good thing. And anyone who tries to make a cat Vegan should never be allowed to own a cat.

I had a black cat who went missing for over a month.. she came back and was bright red. Vet said it was a lack of Taurine while she was missing. Once she was back on her proper diet, the red faded. It was surreal.

She didn't get bright red, but when my grandma's black cat was about 19, her fur started getting more brown, especially in summer. We used to call it her sun tan.
the pigment that make black cats black is melanin. Melanin can 'rust' with either by age, diseases, lacking certain amino acids, or by getting a lot of sun.

Also, as a former bunny mom, buns are delightful and so loving, and will absolutely thrive on a plant-based diet. So if you want a pet who can be as loving and playful as a cat but don't want to have to feed your pet meat, there is no love quite like bunny love!
As long as they realize their spines are much more frail and you can't pick them up the same way you would a cat. People should...probably research the kind of animal they want to have before committing to a possibly long term relationship.
@@kamikeserpentail3778 I agree with the sentiment, but to be fair, I've only known one cat in my entire life who _enjoyed_ being picked up (and I've owned 17 cats over the years). Most just tolerate it, but it's so much easier to build a cat's trust if you never (*unnecessarily) take away their freedom of movement. So... I reckon picking up your cats should generally be considered a "needs must" situation too. Frankly, I think we should all have to learn safe animal handling-- then get the qualification and a license for that species-- to own any pet.
theres been a lot of studies showing they can in fact thrive on a vegan diet. you dont need certain foods, but certain nutrients my guy. get benevo or something similar, see what they like.

I’m vegan and have three cats. People just assume I put them on vegan diets but I would NEVER! Loving animals means making sure they are properly taken cared of according to their needs.

Very glad you posted this. I’m a 10+ year vegan (because I love animals) but would never feed my cats a vegan diet. We do the best we can in the world we live in, and our kitties need their proper nutrition. ❤️

@@vivichan7012 Hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats still need animal protein, in the form of insects and boiled egg. Rabbits, guinea pigs, degus, chinchillas, horses, cows, etc. are actually herbivores and their diet consists of grass/hay for the most part (some of these animals should eat vegetables, not fruit, frequently too).

Not about cats but I've met people who seem sure that chickens do not eat meat and get upset when I say that they 100% do. Mine hunt mice and small lizards.
This! Vegetarian chickens are not healthy chickens. Being scavengers, chickens will eat anything that will fit into their beak, including lizards, snakes, and even other birds. Chickens that are only fed corn and grain will lay runny eggs with sickly yellow yolks and fragile shells. Meanwhile, chickens that do get enough protein and variety will lay eggs with deep orange yolks and a strong shell.
Chickens are SAVAGE.
When I feed my little dog outside the chicken would come over and take her meat, chickens also dig to find bugs and insects to eat too.
Chickens especially need animal protein when they're in molt, also where do these people think chickens get their calcium from?

Another rescuer is helping a kitten who is very sick because a person that found a kitten outside, fed the kitten plant based milk, making the kitten very sick with severe diarrhea. Their intention was to help but they ended up making the kitten sick. Kitten lady has tons of videos and resources to help you take care of kitten ❤️
I saw that too! I don’t remember which rescue it was (I follow too many kitten fosters on Instagram lol) but it’s such a horrible situation! The poor baby would’ve been better of being not fed than fed plant milk. Absolutely 100% support humans being plant-based/vegan/anything else, but this poor babies are not built like us and can’t eat like us! I know the person was just trying to help but this is why we need more wide-spread information about obligate carnivore pets! I’m so glad Hannah shared videos like this!

I used to work at a pet store and would constantly have to explain this! People would ask why we sell vegan cat food if it’s not okay for cats and I just wanted to shout “because it’s a soulless corporation and if morons like you are willing to buy it, they will sell it!” Needless to say, I didn’t work there long.
I see this a lot with small animals: Why would stores carry dangerous food items like snak shacks, or cages that are too small if they were "actually" dangerous/cruel? Because people buy them, and the government doesn't regulate animal welfare and safety nearly as much as human products (and even that is lacking sometimes).

@@lazuliartz1296 I feel this, anytime I go into a pet shop and see hamster cages I just want to scream. I got kicked out once because I got asked by some peeps about hamster cages (I didn't work there but apparently I looked knowledgeable?) and I told them to buy a massive plastic box from the shop next door, put some airholes into it and use that instead because there is no hamster cage big enough in the store.
I have seen vegan cat food used to help diagnose food allergies, but yeah, it's no good as a long-term feeding option.
@@kellyburds2991 couldn't agree more! One of the kittens i adopted throws up when eating chicken, vet prescribed a hypoallergenic food that was soy based and said to keep him on it. He was always hungry and wasn't really growing/gaining weight. So I said hell no I'm not keeping him on this long term. He was ok with beef so I transitioned him to home cooked beef(with added vitamins they need) and in one month he gained a good amount of weight and started growing at a good pace after being really skinny and small for weeks during which his sister was thriving. It's been about 3 months and he's gotten bigger than his sister! Nothing like the cat he was on soy.
When I got my Spot in 2009, the lady I adopted him from was feeding him protein enriched tofu paste. She made me swear not to feed him meat. I did. When I got him home, I fed him a quarter pound of raw hamburger meat. He ate every bit of it like he'd never eaten before.
Was Spot a cat or a dog? Either way, thank you for rescuing him. The wrong food is animal abuse and slow death for the pet.

Cats are carnivores, dogs on the other hand are omnivores. So you could technicalley feed dogs a plant based diet, but you really would need to do a lot of research on that beforehand.
@@pattykelly6621 Although dogs can live on a non meat diet, the amount of nutritions needed to make it healthy can be complicated. All dogs are different, and currently many people are turning to a raw meat diet for their dogs because they see much better health benefits, while in cases with allergies, only a certified and respected vet should prescribe a non meat diet to your dog. I worked with an underweight german shepherd once, and my senior and I asked why it had so little weight and if there were any health issues like lack of appetite or diarhea. Turned out the owner was vegan and had done extensive research on how to safely make your dog thrive on a vegan diet. We consulted with my seniors vet and arranged for a free check up of the dog with the consent of the owner because they were obviously also concerned. Turned out the dog was not getting the needed nutrition from the vegan diet, and the owner was given a list of recipes (which all either had meat or eggs) to help the dog gain weight and get the needed nutrition. The owner was lucky that the dog being underweight was the only problem at the moment, and if it had continued on there would have been other problems including the dog having a shorter lifespan. Just because there are currently alternative options for dogs with allergies, does not mean that it is something every dog can thrive on. Dogs have adapted to live with humans and their sometimes lack of meat, however, these moments of non-meat consumptions did not last for the entirety of the dogs life. A dog will never choose to be vegan, humans are the ones choosing it. If you do not want your dog to eat meat, then simply, like the kitten lady herself said, get a different animal like a rabbit.

i adopted a ball python while i was vegan and sometimes friends or family would wonder "how can you feed her mice if you're vegan" and it's like, yeah, simple: I AM vegan, not the snake ??? lol
I never understood how a supposed vegan could purchase an animal that was purposely bred into existence for human use. That's not vegan. Though I guess many people claim to be vegan simply because they eat a plant based diet, so maybe that's the confusion.

@@mariafox9226 I suspect you couldn't get a snake to eat anything other than meat, even if you tried. Not only do they eat an exclusively carnivorous diet, they also feed on whole prey items. It's tricky enough to get some snakes to accept food that isn't still alive and fighting back, so convincing them that they should try something that has the wrong shape, consistency and smell is probably borderline impossible. And of course, it would be horrendously unhealthy.

Bunnies are great vegan buddies! I got my rabbits for companionship but since I've been gardening there's been this extra bonus of their manure supercharging my compost. As long as you have a way of protecting it from outside buns and their potential diseases, you can grow some of their food too

The intro to your video was delightful, the explanation was clear, and I really loved how you mentioned at the end of the video that people who wanted vegan pets could fill a really big need by caring for all the other vegan animals that also need homes and care.

sadly a lot of vegans are extremely violently religious about their cult, and will force it on everything and everyone they can. I've met more than a few like that, including some that tried to get me and some other non-vegan colleagues fired for not being vegan. 'Causing a hostile work environment by eating meat at lunch time' was the argument.

Good on you for encouraging people to adopt guinea pigs if they want a vegan pet. Before my family got our cats, we had a pair of guinea pigs we got from an animal shelter and they were wonderful little companions.

I'm so glad to see you take this topic on, Hannah. I had a friend years ago who was macrobiotic and fed her cat the same kind of food. I think the cat got a little fish now and then, but mostly ate vegetables. I never thought this could be a good diet for a cat, but I had no evidence to support my argument.

Congratulations! Hope it's a fun and educational experience! I accidentally had to foster 4 kittens from our tabby neighborhood stray who tried hiding them under our roof solar panels! They were 5 wks old, the best babies, all adopted out at 8 wks., Mom was TNR'D. Then last year, happened again with our black neighborhood stray, 2 kittens, only a little younger. Adopted, Mom spayed. Happy endings! Good luck! 👍

Vegans can always have my support as long as they understand that this lifestyle is not for everyone, specially not pets. I can understand when a human chooses veganism but forcing it into a cat is already interfering with the natural food cycle of an animal. It’s important to have limits.

I truly hope that if someone may be misguided, but well-meaning, that they take your words to heart. Even if someone is vegan, or vegetarian, or only does keto, or whatever dietary needs they have as a human, people must live in this reality where some animals are obligate carnivores. Whether we're talking cats, or snakes, some animals MUST consume meat, because that is how they evolved over millions of years, & we all must face the truths of our world, & the interconnected food chain therein. To do otherwise, is to delude oneself, rather then face, what some may consider 'uncomfortable' truths. If you are truly interested in helping cats, or any other obligate carnivore, then you must accept them as they are, not as you would prefer them to be. If you cannot come to terms with this, there are plenty of other animals that are herbivores that you can assist that are just as wonderful as any carnivore. I don't mean to come off as rude, but truth is truth, & dietary requirements for certain species are are not up for debate.

Those who are feeding cats plant based don’t have bad intentions. They believe that farm animals are just as valuable as cats. So they do not feel that more farm animals should suffer so humans can have cats for pets

THANK YOU. My friend's best friend shamed me for feeding my cats meat. She's vegan and feeds her cats vegan food. She told me that I'm part of the problem now.
Most vegans know you're not supposed to feed cats plant-based diets. But you're friend's right that if YOU eat animals, you are indeed a part of the problem. I hope they wake up and realize they need to feed their cats meat.
If your goal is to stop exploitation, suffering, death, to animals, then logically, it is much better to feed cats plant based foods, and if that doesn't work, euthanize the cat. Psychologically, that's difficult to accept.

true, taurine is added to dry cat food and there are grain or soy filling in many of them, but dry cat food also not good for cat. The grain/soy filling isn't properly metabolized by the cats' body as they are not evolved for them.

The calico ear wiggles put a big SMILE 😀 on my face. I am glad you are posting this. I know that cats and dogs require meat in their diet. Also the amino acid you talked about is very necessary for a healthy cat. One of my friends fed her cat things that lacked that ingredient and I told her about it. I know without it a cat can suffer from cardiomyopathy

The idea that cats can derive significant nutritional benefits from plants (they can eat some for certain purposes, think grass which is thought to provide folic acid, but they can't be used as the basis of a diet). The idea that obligate carnivores can be healthy without a meat-based diet. The idea that a few vocal extremists have shared that it is not only morally acceptable, but morally required, to deprive pets of meat in their diets regardless of their dietary requirements. Some of this misinformation is primarily based in ignorance, but some of it is coming from sources that seem to think their personal agenda supersedes their obligation to care for any dependents they have.

The only difference in my cats' diet before starting to cut down on meat and after I went fully plant-based was the table scraps. Funny thing, one kept trying to get some long after I had stopped offering anything (she didn't like to eat any fruits, veggies or grains), she kept making those little slow blinks to get more. I would sometimes give in, get up, and get the jar of peanut butter, which she loved to lick off my fingers. Thank you for posting this video. Although most people agree with this, there are always some out there who think they know better and call us hypocrites. BTW, that last kitten at the end was just adorable! I agree!
Just be careful with peanut butter, many sugar free peanut butters have xylitol (also called birch sugar), which is toxic to pets! ❤ even a tiny amount can be deadly. So just make sure you check the ingredients

A little addition since people tend to avoid any plants in their cat's diet because of the carnivore part: very small amounts of plant-based food are okay and even obligational. Cats are hunters - and their prey has a digestive system same as them. They normally eat mice and birds, which ate grass and berries before hunted down. That's why cat grass is not harmful (you still should look out for poisonous plants and sharp leaves)

Wait until you learn that cat food is made from almost entirely oats, beets, wheat, and barley. (there is just a little bit of beef juice for the taurine)

Thank you for this video! I am in the pet food industry as well as animal shelter and rescue, and this question comes up now and then. Now I have a great video to refer people to! In our home, we currently have twelve special needs and geriatric rabbits and six guinea pigs including two seniors with malocclusion. My last dog passed away last Christmas. I miss him terribly, but I don’t miss the meat part of his diet. It’s been much easier and less stressful maintaining a vegan lifestyle living with all these herbivorous animals! Anyone who would like to share their lives with a herbivorous animal should do their research on buns and piggies. They’re amazing companions, intelligent, humorous and very relaxing to be around ❤️🐰

Anyone who tries to feed any carnivore a vegan diet or anything but meat (or it's mothers milk or some specially formulated alternative) should not be allowed to own pets. Thank you for sharing the truth. I know there's lots of vegans who think that because they are vegan, everyone and everything else should be too, and I totally respect that you are attempting to educate these sort of people.
I'm a vegan and have had lots of vegan friends, and have fortunately never known another vegan who tried to put their cats on a vegan diet. We want our cats to be as healthy and well fed as they are loved, which means respecting that they are carnivores.
Vegans do not discriminate, that's the whole point, other animals exist as well.

Also: DO NOT FEED YOUR CAT AN ALL TUNA DIET!!! I remember years ago a woman who was mentally disabled fed her cats pure tuna for years. Both cats sadly were in horrendous condition and at the point of no return when the animal rescue found out. Please consult your local vet and pet store before going into food for any animal.
all animals should have a varied diet to get everything their bodies require to flourish. even feeding your cat nothing but the top cat food can take it's toll on a cat, as none of them put in everything that you cat needs.

@@ladyriethegoldendelmo5441 It's always best to consult a vet for the diet for an animal. Various other bits of food (small portions of vegetables and other nutrients) balance out a cats diet, not just pure meat. And bones (chicken and poultry especially since the bones can break easily cooked, and raw is a no-no for cats, boiling works). So yeah, the short: You can, but it can't just be meat, there are a lot of cooked meals for cats that are sold in pet stores, like fancy feast and Rachel Ray (which my cat adores). In various flavors which helps their diet. The biggest part is a combination of wet and dry to help with digestion and their teeth health. Raw meat is a no-no, but most canned food after opening can be refrigerated, and keeps them much longer. It also depends on their health, dietary needs and other criteria. At least in the United States, other countries make almost a soup with veggies and meat for cats.
@@ladyriethegoldendelmo5441 cats can get sick from salmonella too. It is a risk, while cats can do at least ok on dry cat food. Diseases in themself are natural although unwanted. I also read once that in nature cats would eat the organs of animals as well to get all nutrients, muscle meat alone wont be enough as their only food. If you want to feed the cat raw meat, chicken may be one of the worst choices and cow would be better regarding disease (at least for humans that's the case, not sure with cats) This is just my theory, but I think modern livestock may have more diseases than wild animals (on average) due to overcrowding, living in their feces, and being fed for growth not health could weaker their immune system.
there's a startup looking into cultured/lab grown pet treats called "Because, Meat", but they don't have anything for sale yet. I hope they do well and that in a few years we can start buying lab grown pet food

Do you think lab-grown meat could eventually meet cats' dietary requirements? One of the main issues with commercializing lab-grown meat is the texture-it's very difficult to imitate the complex combination of fat and muscle tissue you see in steaks, etc. But many cats are happy eating pate or dry food, which could be much easier to produce in lab. Do you think cats and other animals could be healthy and happy eating lab-grown food?

Thank you for the informative video. Even when it comes to vitamins and minerals, there are different forms, some can be absorbed by cats, some cannot, for example, cats can absorb vitamin A from livers but not vitamin A from carrots.

The idea that people would just feed cats vegan without any concern for their well being or their nutrient requirements is derogatory. Research exists. The same synthetic taurine used in conventional cat food is of course also added to vegan cat food, and a lot of cat food is mostly plant based already.
