He lost his soul there for a few seconds.Even when he exited the ring,he couldn't walk straight.Bending all the way,that was painful to watch.And Sap isn't some small dude,he's a big motherfucker. Bob was a great sportsman and draw in Japan, for K-1 especially, but for Pride and Dream too. His size and raw power was a formidable obstacle to even the most skilled kickboxers like Ernesto Hoost. Ironically Hoost's liver punch didn't put him away as it did Mirko. And Mirko won with a fracturing punch on Sapp after a short liver kick. You could see Sapp guarding his liver side cause he knew that's what the kickboxers would be targeting, but that opened him up for that killer punch. I think Mirko being primarily left handed gave him a slight edge over Hoost's attempts on Sapp. Ernesto never threw a left kick against Sapp that I saw, but kept kicking the opponent's left leg, which you could tell did damage but not enough to hobble him. Just funny to me how Sapp beat Hoost; Hoost beat Mirko; Mirko beat Sapp. Sapp was the least skilled but proved strength and size demand some respect. Hoost tried to stand in and throw, but Mirko avoided his onslaught and picked his shots.
Hoost could’ve won the rematch if he wasn’t so set on brawling with Sapp. He had Sapp hurt to the body and would’ve likely won if he’d have focused his combos to draw Sapp’s defense away from the damaged side.

It kind of was the other way around back then... "I had no doubts, but right before me, Bob Sapp knocked out -- badly and very brutally, and two times in a row -- Ernesto Hoost. And I remember that just like it was yesterday. I was called by my manager and he said, ‘K-1 wants you to fight him.' I said I'm in Pride now. He said, ‘Yeah, we know, but nobody else wants to take the challenge fighting him.' Believe it or not, everybody was terrified of fighting Bob Sapp, especially after he knocked out Ernesto Hoost twice in a row. I said okay, no problem. But I was happy. I remember the fight, and I remember the expression on my face. He was a huge guy. "I had to be very careful, and I beat him very technically, very good. I kicked him first in the liver, and then I connected my left jab straight, right above the eye, and I broke his bone. I put his bone inside, and he had to go to surgery the same night to take it out, so it was very, very painful, but I was happy, of course. He was a beast".
You are way off on him beating Hoost. You do realize most of Sapp’s fights were fixed. He mostly won against scrubs but when he fought most skilled fighters he mostly lost cuz Sapp really sucks. Also you seem to not know any of the facts of Sapp vs Hoost fight. There is a reason for why it was controversial. Sapp won by a first-round TKO after the doctor stopped the match on cuts. Hoost wanted to keep going but the doctor said his cuts were bleeding too much. So Sapp won cuz the doctor wouldn’t let Hoost fight. And Hoost was pissed at that. Despite the loss he was again matched up with Sapp in the quarter finals of the K-1 World Grand Prix 2002. Hoost was wooping Sapp most of the fight. After knocking Sapp down in first round, Hoost lost to Sapp again in a wild slugfest when referee Nobuaki Kakuda declared a TKO while Hoost was still standing, but after the fight, Sapp turned out to have broken his hand and suffered four cracked ribs, and wasn't able to continue, allowing Hoost to replace him in the semi-finals. Hoost wasn’t even knocked out in the second match he was still standing and was still fine. If you watch the fight again, Sapp was so gassed out after the TKO he was looked like he couldn’t last another round. Hoost looked like he was good to go. There is controversy that K1 was bias of Sapp and gave him the win on purpose. They didn’t want Hoost winning so the referee gave Sapp the TKO even though there was no knock out. It’s all bullshit. If the fight kepted going Hoost would have won that fight and he was at first. Sapp sucks and even he himself admits that.
Bruce Wayne No dude. Hoost wasn’t gassed at all. He wouldn’t have continued in Sapp’s place if that was true. Plus Sapp was getting dominated by Hoost in the early half. The ref made a bias call and Joe Rogan even says that call was unfair and bias.

While Sapp was never the most skilled he always tried to win usually doing so by shear strength. this was the beginning of a change in that part. He still tries to win but he is unwilling to risk damage so when the person he is fighting shows they could be a danger to him he basically gives up. Before this fight he fought to win no matter how dangerous he felt the other guy was. After this injury he fought not wanting to take damage and that's how we got to where his has been the last 20 fights or so where he loses often and often for what seems like strange reasons.
YEAP this fight is the end of the old Sapp who bested Hoost twice. After this fight it would be a gradual decline to the laughing stock Sapp is now.
I think it was remarked in his latter years, he would "give you a minute and a half - then after that I'm done". Haha. Ol' Bob. Could have been prime minister of Japan with his cult status there.
