  • Am I the only one who loves Harry's characterization in the sixth film? Throughout the entire movie, you can see him struggling to keep his ego in check because of all the attention he's getting as "the chosen one" (as well as the new star boy of potions class) and how everyone treats him as a hero, especially when it was the other way around last year. Sure, it goes completely against what he's like in the book, but in a way I think it's more realistic for a teenage boy. He never goes overboard, but he has moments of being cocky, flirtatious and smug, and his confidence grows because of it. He manages to semi-manipulate Slughorn when the latter is drunk and emotionally vulnerable BECAUSE he's more secure in himself and his own ability. I just think it adds a very interesting dynamic to his character that wasn't in the book.

Not enough gets said about how effectively this series portrays the process of adolescence, from beginning to question authority, to the first awkward stirrings of romantic attraction, to maturing into adulthood and accepting adult responsibility. The story is exciting and the lore is fun, but the journey through adolescence to adulthood is the thematic heart of the whole series.

But could you even imagine if Alan Rickman's far too early death had been even more earlier and SNAPE would have had to been recast (or worse; digitally revive *shudder*) for the final movie(s) as well? • So… I don’t know how it took me so long to discover you. Your Star Wars retrospective just autoplayed for me and I was just… Your video reignited all my positive feelings after all of the muck Star Wars fans have been dragged and dragged each other through the past few years. It reminded me how just last week, I had a similar experience when YT autoplayed a retrospective of the Harry Potter films that reminded me how magical the HP phenomenon had been, back when it really felt that it was about fans’ relationship to the world and the story, not just there to receive dictates from the author as she tells people who’ve grown up loving her work that she doesn’t care what they think or feel, as all the fans have apparently ever been to her is the comfort she gets looking over her recent royalty cheques. I went to comment my thanks, but noticed that comments were turned off for the Star Wars video. Bummed, but then I noticed… Holy Horcrux! It’s the same guy! Subscribed. I hope you see this. I hope you know your positivity touched my heart. I wish Disney hadn’t sown division by simplifying and “strawmanning” fans’ genuine criticism about Disney’s lack of plan for Star Wars. There was sexism and racism and whatever, but there was legitimate and valid criticism that was ignored. JJ Abrams is one of my favorite directors; I used to fantasize about working for him. I believe in him as a person. But I was very disappointed that a) he didn’t prioritize bringing Luke, Leia, and Han together in Force Awakens and b) he didn’t do the mature thing with Rise of Skywalker by building on Last Jedi so smartly that he even thot the fans who didn’t like Last Jedi to change their minds because of how tight the sequel trilogy ended up being. That would’ve been far more impressive than the, “Oh, you mock me, Rian Johnson? Two can play that game!” For the record, I’m not even sure RJ was trolling; there was a path that could’ve made both films as good as or better than Force Awakens. I wish JK Rowling, whatever her beliefs and no matter how betrayed she feels by “vicious fans” or how betrayed fans feel by the author who keeps rewriting and annotating canon instead of genuinely giving her work and her world to the people who grew up loving her and made her one of the richest writers in history. She doesn’t have to agree with or accept anyone to just not laugh in fans’ faces and gloat about how rich she is. Uh oh. I need to rewatch your videos again. I hope fans remember and remind each other that where both Star Wars and the Wizarding World really live is in our hearts and imaginations. No one - not Lucas or Disney or Rowling - owns our imaginations, even if our imaginations are inspired by the worlds they create, even if they lobby for intellectual property restrictions to secure the royalties that help them sleep at night. What I’ll dream about tonight is a world where we stop fighting each other all the time, where the Internet is a place we come to celebrate each other, share joy, and love things together, and love each other. And seriously, that’s you. It must’ve taken a lot of time to work through your scripts and edit all the footage in these two videos. And the courage and optimism it takes to create these videos in the context of the world we’re living in right now. I just want to say thank you. I used a lot of words, but that’s the gist of it. Thank you.

    • I'd say my favorite performances are: 1. Alan Rickman (literally will go down in history) 2. Gary Oldman (his death scene, need I say more?) 3. Daniel Radcliffe (because of course) 4. Imelda Staunton While Imelda was incredible as Umbridge and truly makes it hard to remember she is not the actual character, I think the emotional weight of the other actors puts them over the edge for myself personally. Daniel Radcliffe's emotional scenes got better and better with time, making it even more believable that he *is* Harry Potter. Gary Oldman was incredible at playing a person who was good at heart yet broken by Azkaban in movie 3, and then regained his sense of self in movie 5. Some of the most heartbreaking scenes center around him, with one of my favorite lines being said by him, "Nice one James!" It just goes to show how much people miss James Potter, and it reminds you of all these people have lost. Finally, of course, Alan Rickman. He was perfect. There is no other way to describe his performance as Snape. Just utterly perfect. The scene in DH Part 2 with Dumbledore... utterly harrowing. "Lily... after all this time?" "Always." That line cemented him as probably my favorite performance by an actor of all time.

  • Only been a couple of minutes into the video when the nostalgia hit. As someone who was 11 when the first movie came out, having read the books that were out at that time before and basically aging with the characters at the same time, I realized HP was one of the most formative media experiences of my youth. Especiall with growing up as queer and a social outsider, Hogwarts was always a fictional home I could turn to. And I realized how much it hurts having that innocence of the experience taken away by an author that is basically out to destroy their own legacy by shitting on the people that these books and movies probably helped the most and that carried a big part of the fan base. I think a lot of people are just very hurt about this part of their childhood being turned into something they despise or at least cannot enjoy innocently anymore.

    • You have to learn to separate the art and artist. To let her views destroy your childhood comfort is a choice. You gotta be emotionally strong in a world where nobody is perfect and people disagree. Live your own life, find your own people who love and accept you, and enjoy what brings you happiness. It doesn't all have to be tied together. Best wishes

  • I don't think there is a weak film in the series. Same with the books of course. It's actually a miracle that Harry Potter's film adaptations ended up being as awesome as they are. It could have been ugly to say the least. It's easy to screw up such a complex, unique, and atmospheric stories, but they ended up being excellent in my opinion. I can watch all of them back to back, and have a great time. I know there are parts that are missing from the films, but in my opinion, that's what the books are out there for. The films have everything they need for the narrative to be cohesive, and for the plot to move forward the right way. That's all that matters.

It was a great opportunity for deepening the atmosphere of the franchise. I just finished the books again after having watched all the movies again. I think the original comment is right. I can't believe it's been over 21 years since then already. These movies hold so much nostalgia for me, me and my cousin were absolutely obsessed with Harry Potter (and Power Rangers lol) to the point that we'd re-enact the movies out scene by scene in our bedrooms.
