Silver Feather: Shaping Menuki using Uchidashi Technique
Making silver menuki for my wakizashi project, a new venture into the fascinating techniques involved in this process: uchidashi. Similar to chasing/repousse but distinct in that you work the piece from one side only. Although information about this subject is scarce online, I was fortunate to come across helpful videos by @FordHallam which provided valuable insights into the process.
For the menuki I created, I decided to shape it like a feather. I'm actually quite happy with how it turned out, despite its imperfections. Honestly, I have no clue if this design holds any specific significance or if menuki are intended to have any. I chose this shape primarily because I thought it would be an achievable first attempt, considering the additional challenge of making two menuki with the same shape. That proved to be quite difficult!
Overall, it's been an interesting and cool project to tackle. However, I must admit that filming it has been quite challenging due to its slow pace and the constant movement of the tiny piece in the pitch bowl.
Now that one of the most detailed and small components is complete, I will continue to working on the rest of the tsuka (handle) for the wakizashi project.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video! I sincerely hope you enjoyed it. I welcome any suggestions or comments you may have. If you found the content valuable, please consider leaving a like and sharing it with others who might find it interesting!

Mad respect. My shoulders hurt in sympathy for the amount of tiny hammer strokes. I love them both. Well done.
Very impressive silver smithing work! I've done silversmithing once before, but never at this level. You're truly going all out with this project, and that deserves a lot of respect! Very well done, sir!
Thank you very much!
I love the wakazashi series.
Goodness, all the special tools you have, I'm in awe. Oh, and very nice work, as usual - this is coming along nicely.
Fantastic work, as always, Sir! The anticipation you are building to see the finished piece is phenomenal! Thanks for sharing your video.
Thank you very much my friend!
Sir, you have the patience of a god! The amount of tiny hammer strokes you had to do is unbelievable. But the finished product is so worth it.
Brother, that tiny flask you burned up really quick....I respect that.
Repoussé work, how delightful. Your pitch mix was just right.
I love watching your work, and you've answered a lot of questions for me in the past about metal working. Thank you.
Glad to hear! Thank you!
I wasn't sure what to think at first, but the feathers turned out very beautiful. Excellent video!
You have exceptional good hand at such artwork, not to mention the patience required to put in this. 👌🏻
Excellent work 👍👍👍. Thank you for sharing. Be safe 🇨🇦
wow! dude, you're amazing .
We love watching you at Turkey 👏👏
I legit thought you would use your logo for the ornament. I'm only slightly disappointed you didn't - very nice work
Lovely work! I really like the direction you are taking your channel in
Wow 😮 BB that looks awesome. You truly are a man of many talents.👍
I am really looking forward to the finished product 🤞🏼😁🤞🏼
I'm really enjoying this project and all its pieces.
Beautiful work!
Fantastic work. I really enjoy this video.😄😄
Wow, amazing job 👍
Fantastic job
so nice to watch
You're a great artist!
Really interesting ❤
I'm just completely blown away with the work going into every stage of this build. How long did this part take in real time?
Thank you!! First one took 3.5 days with material prep and tool making. The second just one long day :)
Magnificent.
Whoa. ❤
Hello mister beautifully made good job well done
to keep the hemisphere from moving you can put rubber or silicone in it
Yeah, back when I made the pitch bowl that was my idea. Then I started using it and felt like there was no need. Now I don't know what to think :)
Great work sir
Pekná práca...
incredibile...ti riveli essere anche scultore/orafo! Giù il cappello...ottimo lavoro.
Wow very hard working i am inspiring from your site😮😮😮😮
Fantastic. I loved watching it . Very good job 👍
Well played
Thanks for the video - what does the feather hold some special meaning for you or is it simply a design that you like?
No meaning to me, I chose this shape primarily because I thought it would be an achievable first attempt! Mentioned in the video description :) Thank you for watching!
you’re the best
Wow!!!👍👍👍
that's cool
I don't know if this is mentioned at all but aside from crafting skills, the video editing skills are amazing as well!
Bravo bel lavoro!
If I ever get a time machine, I’d love to have a beer with whoever came up with the idea of calling these things 目抜き; “Eye Catchers” rather than something shall we say more conventional like 飾り; “decorations”. Imagine the wit; also, it would be a fine opportunity to learn some 古語 directly from the folks who used it in their daily lives. Edit: actually, the translation is more akin to “Eye snatcher”. That just makes them even more amusing because there are customarily two of them on these weapons. One for each of the enemy’s eyes, I guess.
Idea for a video: restore that roller mill. 😊
Right!!! This guy's tools are atrocities that hurt my soul 😂 as soon as a saw the mill my jaw dropped. I'd pop a poopoo valve if I found mine in that bloody state mate.
Yes! I'll restore it someday :)
❤❤❤
BEAUTIFUL!
👍👍👍
Nice menuki. Let me guess, you watched some of Ford Hallams videos.
Thanks! Yes I have, he released the very few videos about this subject here on yt! A real master. Also linked his channel in the video description :)
👍👍👍😎😎😎
I know I'm watching this late but you should fill it with something to help it keep its shape and prevent it from being crushed. If not silver, maybe plaster or something
👍🌞!!
I'm sure I watched you cut up the same bread basket before
Indeed. Stole some of my old clips from the shibuichi video project :)
You know...... when you were making the two piece sand form you could have carved that feather shape into the sand and poured the molten silver into that shape instead of the dominoes shape? Then open the form, shake out the sand and trim the pieces away from the sprue? A little clean up and polish them like you did and they would be done way faster with no tap tap tap a million times with those embossing chisels? Whatever they are called, I've had a long day BB. Just saying, keep up the great contenr.

Wow!
I wish your videos were longer and not so rushed. The video shorts I find really annoying. We don't get much to look at when comes to the details of construction. Please consider going back to a more instruction approach. Your talents are great to watch!😊
For the pitch bowl, have you considered using a couple wood shims to prevent it from moving around temporarily? That or the anti-skid padding that is sometimes used in kitchen cabinets to prevent dishes from sliding out accidentally.
Thin parts are hard to cast! And I have the rolling mill :)
wow
É sério isso? Que trem mais nada a ver. Curuiz.
There's a young man in Korea who works with silver and exotic woods I'd like to recommend if I may, youtube.com/@SilverMeister I find watching him work to be very relaxing and I have learned a great deal from him about working with silver. Seeing different techniques from so many talented artist like you is helping me grow my own shop and push my limits.
Awesome video mate. I have to admit though....if you got my rolling mill that rusty you'd be fired and sent a bill for replacement rollers. I've never seen someone let their rolling mill get to that state before. It's absolutely shocking. You're nothing without your tools my man, always clean and oil them at the end of the workday. Especially that rolling mill 😢 (use a green dish scourer and 3-in-1 sewing machine oil. Don't use WD-40 like others suggest for your tools either. It doesn't last as long as the oil because it evaporates, leaving your tools exposed to rusting after a short time period.) You seem to be dedicated enough so spend some time on that mill mate.
Of course! I bought that rolling mill just recently with the intention of restoring it. But I want to finish this wakizashi project first :) Thank you!
@@BlackBeardProjects Oh, my apologies to you then mate. Congratulations on finding a second hand rolling mill. That's an awesome undertaking as well. I hope you do a video on the process you go through to restore the mill. I don't think there would be many videos on restoring a mill on KZhead. I know I would enjoy watching that.
Wow !
