Kogatana & Kozuka: Making a Utility Knife for the Wakizashi
In this episode of my wakizashi series, I tackle one of the last pieces: the kogatana and the kozuka handle. The kozuka is a decorative handle fitting for the kogatana, a small utility knife that fits into a pocket on the saya.
Crafting the kogatana was quick and easy, using a scrap piece of raindrop damascus I had forged for another project. On the other hand, creating the kozuka proved to be a very long and tedious process.
The kozuka is made of shibuichi, a silver alloy consisting of 20% silver and 80% copper. The feather inlay is crafted from 800 silver (80% silver, 20% copper), matching the feather design of the menuki for consistency throughout the fittings. I experimented with a nanako punch background, a traditional pattern of small dots thought to resemble fish roe.
The process of folding the kozuka presented significant challenges, and in hindsight, I would have worked on the feather silver inlay after the fact to minimize the risk of it breaking off.
Unfortunately information about crafting methods for kozuka is scarce. Nonetheless, I believe my construction method is plausible, having carefully inspected the original pieces.
Overall, I'm very happy with how it turned out, and it's a joy to see all the pieces now made and finished. Only some finishing touches remain, which I'll work on asap, and then I'll create a recap video of the entire process.
Thank you all for following this journey and for your support. Your encouragement means a lot!

I’ve watched countless knife/sword videos on KZhead and none of them even come close to this. Every time I think you are done, another video comes out with even more incredible detail being created. This is amazing, I’ve loved watching this blade come to life 🖤
I couldn't agree with you more. This is the best series I've seen, covering every aspect of craftsmanship.
I agree. There's just something about BBP that really enhances the experience when you watch his videos. The speed of the video resulting in a perfect range of sound and the minimum background noises. It's so satisfying!! 😄 Edit: How could I forget about the precision?! A magnificent combination!!
Thank you so much everyone. Much appreciated ❤️ Love you!
I miss the days when you used to do restoration videos. They were impressive. You brought new life to things that people had given up on.
I'll make more in the future for sure!
I do agree but the making stuff is fascinating too.
Amazing! What a great piece of art and skill, I like how every part has it`s individual look and at the same time matches perfectly with the other parts.
Pure japanese craftmanship and elegance, very beautiful.
he's italian, in italy... lol
You never cease to amaze... Every single video I watch just stuns me. I swear you're getting better with every project. This is a flawless creation.
You have an incredible amount of patience.
MITICO!!
That is stunning. What a beautifully crafted homage to master craftsmen. You've shown so much skill and determination in recent years that I don't think there's anything beyond you anymore. I have complete faith in your ability to learn almost any skill to a reasonable standard. Thank you for bringing us on this journey. I hope you display this with pride!
You can be proud of you ! What a beautiful serie you offer to us. Thank you

Ага особеннно дырка в клинке и почти выпавшее серебряное перо на ножнах замечательная идея но вот исполнение очень плохое
Sometimes you amaze me, this is one of those times! Thx
Sir every time you add to this awesome project it gets better and better thank you for sharing this with us six stars brother
I have followed your videos for a long time and I am deeply impressed with the way you develop your metal working techniques. Your chisel work in this one was crazy good!
Thank you very much!
I enjoyed this build the most
The amount of work is crazy 👍
A veritable work of art, Sir. It's beautiful!
The knife is beautiful! Great Job
Beautiful work!
Your skills are amazing, what a beautiful piece of work 🙏🏻😮
Absolutely wonderful!
Incredibly great result! 👏👏👏👏👏 Only the hole in the Tsuba should allow the removal of a small blade without removing the sword from its scabbard.
Beautiful work 👏👏👏👌👍
just goes to show with a project you care about how your skill can really grow very well made blade congrats and thanks for sharing
absolutely delightful thank you
Beautiful piece! A show of true craftsmanship, skill and art.
Great work 👍
Beautiful work

I absolutely love the wakizashi series and I hope to see more great projects like that. I’m actually planning on making a wakizashi for the KZhead samurai competition.. 😅
Thanks!! Yeah, that's fitting :) Have fun with it!
Ну и как тогда можно описать клинок этого ножа кроме как словами позор и провал
Nice work Mr Beard 👌
Impressive! Man like how much research did you do to come up with all the design elements? I love every bit of this, it just flows so well together. As always your attention to detail is next level.
Beautiful !
Bravissimo!!!
Che spettacolo! 🤩
Perfektná zlatnícka práca...
Pure art!
Well thats just awesome!!!
Fantastic!!
Amaizng to watch. 👍👍
what a nice surprise
Remarkable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brilliant!
We can only hope that a katana is next to complete the set :). Watching this craftsmanship has been wonderful.
Very nice!
Really nice work mate ... love your content, as much as my Japanese wife
Now that is fricken awesome.
Just wow!
You're gonna ruin that raindrop damascus by...never mind. That looks really nice.
Just wow ❤️❤️
Love this entire build series! For the love of god though, refinish the wheels on your rolling mill!!! 😂 Love your vids, keep up the amazing work.
I am beyond impressed with your work. Brava!!! A small request/ challenge for you, if I may? Could you possibly recreate the sword that Rutger Hauer carried in the movie 'Blind Fury'?
magnifique .
MÜKEMMEL BİR İŞÇİLİK KARDEŞİM TEBRİK EDERİM 🇹🇷
This was great to watch. So now, 5 months in, you have made your wakazashi. Now I'm wondering, I'm sure you've learnt a lot along the way. Will there be a 2nd wakazashi?
It's absolutely beautiful. Does the design have a historical significance? I'm not understanding why you'd want a utility knife requires you to remove the sword first to get to the utility knife... maybe something they just used around camp and stuff, or maybe just a backup of a backup?
Great work and very challenging project. Short question: what did you use to blacken the nanako part of the handle?
It is very good . Nice . Awesome. I have all the silver gold copper tools . But now of that matters because I don't have the power to make this stuff . I kind of makes me mad . I wish I had the knowledge and experience and wisdom to make not just weapons but weapons of heritage and culture - history. It's not only cool but important.
cool video. Do you have any suggestions how to add a Kogatana sheath to a standard saya, or an idea how to secure a Kogatana on such a saya that doesn't have a sheath for it?
simply sensational. What is that red mass that you attach the piece to engrave?
His on it!
It would be very interesting to hear what a Japanese smith has to say about this masterpiece, any criticism is good no matter how positive or negative and considering all the time, sweat and blood that BBP (Black Beard Projects) have put into this beautiful masterpieces.
Subarashii desu. ✌♥️. Jôzu. Mata ne.
Osom 😮
How is the blade secured to the handle? Beautiful work, BTW👍💯
Sweet
Sofa King cool.
Are you concerned about the couple of failures in the Damascus layers? Beautiful work btw 🙂
Thank you!! Not really, it's meant to be used just as letter opener anyway :) The one on the original wakizashi I got also looks very fragile. These blades are just too thin for any serious use.
@@BlackBeardProjects that makes total sense, thank you for the reply.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
عالی 👍🏼
What a brilliant series. How many workshop hours did you put into this project?
Thank you!! I'm not sure I want to sit down and think about that! :) Way too much and sooo much more than I anticipated. I think I have now three months of actual work in... Something like that
I have watched this series from the beginning. You have a fine hand for metalwork. I do not know why you wanted a wakizashi, but I'll concede you have a fine one. Are you going to build a katana next?
Thanks! Glad to hear you followed the journey :) I hope so, one day!
1:19 i was wondering what is this red coloured thing you always use to hold metal objects in it ?
Amazing skills. One question, in traditional katana that handle is not supposed to go through the tsuba? In yours it's seems to just touch it.
Thank you!! And yes, you are correct. Even though I intended my kozuka to fit the hole of the tsuba, after all the shaping it came out just slightly wider, so it does not fit. In the final episode I will address this by enlarging the hole of the tsuba :) Cheers!
@@BlackBeardProjects thanks for your answer, in any case amazing work.
👍👍👍
Isnt thr kogatana supposed to fit through the gap in the cross guard?
Beautiful build! It's just a little funny however that you can't draw the knife without unsheathing the sword by pulling it through the hole in the tsuba, when traditionally thats the sole reason they're there in the first place, and your sword even already has one.
It occurs to me to ask what is the significance of the feather motif? Is it random? Has this question already been asked and answered elsewhere?
Yep! :) I've answered this in the menuki video description I think. I'm not sure if menuki are intended hold any significance, I chose the feather shape primarily because I thought it would be an achievable first attempt in uchidashi (chasing/repousse).
👍
👏👏👏👏👏👍
👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
