3 Tips for Beating a Taller Boxer - 90 Second Boxing Tips

www.myboxingcoach.com - If as a boxer if you are faced a taller opponent it need not be turned into a particularly complicated matter to beat the guy. In this 90 second boxing tips video and article I will offer you 3 simple tactics to apply when faced with a taller boxer who has a longer reach.
Before we get started though, let's remember something about facing an opponent in the boxing ring. This 'something' is very simple, and it's this - great boxing skills win the day. Height and reach are of course important considerations in a boxing ring, but only when they are owned by a boxer who has the skills to make the height and reach matter.
If you are faced with an opponent who is tall and has a longer reach than you, but you are simply a better boxer then beating the guy up will be a fairly straightforward exercise. Moral of the story - practice, practice, practice.
There are tons of variations with respect to defeating a taller opponent. Given I am fitting this into a 90 second video I am going to single out 3 tactics.
Close the Ground - This is a very simple, blunt and powerful way of getting into close range. Speed is of the essence. Use the double arm block, keep the head low by using the duck and cover the ground very quickly! This will enable you to get close to the taller boxer and unload the shots as soon as you hit close range.
Long Range Trigger - This tactic is about appreciating that a reach advantage is only an advantage if the owner of the reach is able to dictate when the shot is thrown. Against a taller opponent, a great tactic is to draw their lead by feinting an then use the simple back hand block to stop the incoming straight shot. Once you have blocked you can step in to deliver effective long range shots followed by hooks, uppercuts and whatever else that comes to mind!
Draw Them In - The final tactic is designed on the principle that very often taller box-fighters prefer opponents to come forward. Having the opponent come forward very often fits perfectly into their style of fighting, letting the opponent walk onto shots. Often though, taller boxers are less inclined to attack the opponent, so you can work this to your advantage. Go on the back foot, make the taller opponent come to you. As the taller boxer commits, switch your mode to attack and explode forward.
You can mix these 3 tactics up in a single round to get some cool results. They are simple rules to overcome a taller boxer but the simple stuff works, that's a mantra I use over and over.

  • I like the simple-useable advice you teach. However, being a shorter person myself, I noticed you mention that there are numerous ways “to get inside”. I only ever used the approach you mentioned (block with both hands and simply close the gap). Do you perhaps have a video covering other ways of getting inside? Thank you!

  • Get in to infighting with headmovement worked wonders for me. When you slip do not move your feet only sideways or even backwards. You will not make up any ground with that. Instead move your head and do a step in a 45 degree forward. I know this super contradictory to what your human "flee" response is, because you think it is walking into the shots/danger BUT you will be safer and in the advantage in the close range to a taller guy. He cannot throw his straight punches in a close range. So move your head a lot, when he jabs, slip and do a step small forward, throw your punches. And get out again. Also throwing right overhands to counter the jabs works very well.

  • I'm 5'6 and I have short arms, but my core strength is incredible. Heavy hands they say. Thanks for all your advice here, mate. I'm 39 years old, but I feel like I'm 20. I plan to go professional next year. I look at it like this. THEY are boxers....I'm a boxer-hunter. It's my job to break them down with my bag of tricks and learned gadgets, begotten by years of training and instinct. Plus, I used to be, and still somewhat am, very acrobatic, so I have a whole other sense of my body's place in the ring. When I was younger, I didn't trust myself, for some reason. Now that I'm older and still going strong, I want to see what I can do with this talent. I'm 39 as of last week, and I can still do almost everything I did when I was younger, but now I'm smarter, and stronger.

  • Hello Fran how do I close the distance on a taller opponent without smothering myself

    @hm163@hm1632 жыл бұрын
  • Dear Fran, when facing taller opponents; are punches to a taller opponents head always going to be not as powerful as punching to the face to someone your height or shorter because you're not able to drop your weight into punches that go to a taller opponents face? I feel this way and use the same power generation methods against a shorter opponent when sparring taller people. Is there anyway to remedy this situation?

    • Use the fact that your punches come from underneath to their head thus harder to see.

    @MrBurgaBoii@MrBurgaBoii8 жыл бұрын
    • +MrBurgaBoii when someone is quicker, u have to learn how to read your opponent. the thing about one guy having much more speed than you is there's not much you can do about it EXCEPT learning his patterns during the session and PREDICTING one step ahead of him. If you notice he jabs and pivots to your right - cut him off by pivoting to your left and come in with a 1-1-2 moving forward for example. Take note of his footwork, take note of how he reacts to things. Someone can be physically faster than you, but you can think faster than them. Be a counter puncher, focus on his patterns. If he comes forward, it's easier for you to read him - slip, counter lead right, reset. Counter, counter, counter.
