See how the latest Fontana Lakeshore Cleanup went here: • Fontana Lakeshore TRAS...
Next Fontana Lakeshore Trash Cleanup: Nov 1-3, 2024! Come for half a day or all weekend, totally up to you! Upon arrival at Fontana Marina (40 Fontana Dam rd, Fontana Dam, NC 28733) you’ll be put on a pontoon boat with others with an experienced driver and assigned to a cove or area. Each day boats leave out around 9am & return around noon for a free catered lunch, then head back out from 1-4pm. All ages are welcome, but please note that the nature of our shoreline is that steep and rocky (or driftwood-covered) terrain is not uncommon. Dress in layers and wear waterproof boots, if possible. All gear is provided, plus a free T-shirt :) If you are traveling in from out of town, there is a full resort with lodge rooms & cabins for rent 1.5 miles from the marina, as well as a campground with hookups, showers, etc. Visit fontanavillageresort.com for lodging. There is no advanced sign-up necessary for the cleanup, just show up & we’ll put you to work!

  • One FAQ we forgot to mention - there is an annual fee floating cabin/houseboat owners pay for their mooring. It varies depending on which harbor you are in & what amenities that harbor offers. Ours, for reference, is $2800/year...& I believe that's the most expensive one. Not bad for "rent" huh 😉 let us know what other questions you may have about this lifestyle!

I am a 58 yo grandmother of two littles and it would be fun to stay in one of these floating homes for a few days, just soaking in nature. It's great to see a younger couple take interest in their community to maintain the beauty this area has to offer. Kudos to you for appreciating mother nature and helping neighbors. ❤

Brandon is a true steward of the lake. Fitting that he is recognized for that caring. And partnered with someone of equal caring and fortitude. How lucky the lake is. You guys rock.

  • I'm glad you're not having any issues keeping your floating cabin rented. It's sweet how humble Brandon is about getting that award. I'm in Central Indiana - about as land-locked as you can get, so it's interesting to hear about the ins and outs/dos and don'ts of having a cabin on the lake. Your lake is massive! Thanks for the visual!

  • This video is full of useful information. Thank you for sharing and putting this out there. I'm all the way out in California with absolutely no connection to Fontana Lake, but of course I have questions and am curious about living on the water there. My parents lived on a floating home on the Columbia River in north Portland, OR at one time and it was very interesting. I can see why it is appealing to many. I AM ESPECIALLY INSPIRED BY YOUR CLEANUP AND CONSERVATION EFFORTS. I can see that when there's a will, there's a way and you will surely inspire others by your activities. I teared up a little around 8:00 when you were speaking about the people who show up to help. BIG CHEERS to them! All the best to you and your friends. I am enjoying your channel. (Just found your tour videos on Tiny House Giant Journey and came over to your channel. Good stuff!)

I live in the Tip South Carolina and you better believe if I’m frying something making something that’s got a boil for hours whatever I’m doing it outside. Plus it just ruins the inside of your house, boiling beans for three hours. Then I live in an RV every other weekend in the center of Florida and you better believe I had to cook anything inside. It is all on the grill, induction burner, one of the best investments I’ve ever purchased, Food, steamer, or a crockpot/Insta pot.

    • As there were quite a few houses featured in this video I’m not sure which one you’re referring to haha. I can only speak for the floating houses we have built, and as for those, none of the foundation or deck wood is untreated. It’s also all stained (& re-stained at least yearly). Keeping treated wood stained is really all that’s necessary to keep it from rotting, at least within a 50 year timeframe or so. We have a playlist on our channel sharing step-by-step how we built our most recent build if you’d like to see more on what kinds of materials were chosen & why 😊

  • Airbnb questions: Our daughter has 4 daughters who love to camp. Would you allow an adult and girls 6 to 13 with a couple camping on the floor for two to three days? Second, is there a campground in the area, primitive or with hookups for our camper? They live in Georgia, we live in west Tennessee and our son lives in Knoxville, and we would like a place to camp/ meet this fall. Idea, we used to have a lakeshore lot on Greers Ferry Lake in Arkansas, and like all lakes, there was a trash problem, more from drunk campers and boaters than any land owners. People on the lake caught and froze walleye and catfish all year and bought some more catfish then had a huge fish fry on the Sunday evening after the cleanup which was always a huge success, however, now due to the crowds, the fish fry's are now done in smaller groups around the lake, mostly hosted by home owners or groups of homeowners.

    • There is a campground about 2 miles from the marina with hookups! 👍 It’s right by the river below the dam. and sure, having the girls here would be great- just don’t know if there is physically enough room on the floor outside of the beds for anyone to sleep unless they sleep outside on the dock. The only open floor space is in the living room/kitchen area, which is used up completely when the trundle bed is pulled out from under the daybed. Maybe the 2 youngest/smallest could fit in on the daybed together. In any event, we don’t have a problem with them trying to make it work, but just wanted to set the expectation that they know its a very small house with very little extra floor space & sharing beds or sleeping outside might be necessary with any more than 4 people. 🙏

  • Can you guys post a link or elaborate on how these are going to be allowed indefinitely? If you go to the TVA website it seems they still believe these will be sunset and removed from the lakes eventually.

    @cheerbeerification@cheerbeerification10 ай бұрын
    • There are countless news articles that explain this in plainer language but this is the most recent update to the federal floating cabin regulations on TVA’s website: www.federalregister.gov/documents/2021/09/10/2021-19098/floating-cabins (See the section on “background” to read about how the sunset was put in place May 2016, then overridden by congress on Dec 2016.) Here are a couple articles to further explain: www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2016/12/23/tva-houseboats/95795110/ smokymountainnews.com/archives/item/19016-new-law-stops-tva-s-ban-of-fontana-houseboats You are more than welcome to call or email TVA if you are still confused or unsure about the sunset being overturned years ago. They are actually pretty good about responding, in our experience. 🙂 P.S… Would you mind to share the link to where on TVA’s website you believe you are reading that the sunset is still in place? This is definitely 100% incorrect so if you are indeed reading that on a current article, we’ll be sure to send it their way for correction.

    @commonsense8012@commonsense801210 ай бұрын
    • Are you up to date on what the price difference is in an aluminum dock and a wood dock? We had ours quoted both ways… You could even be lazy and hire someone to do the staining every year, and STILL be sitting with an additional $15k in your pocket 3 decades down the road. If you have the kind of disposable income to spring for luxuries like that, go for it. They’re definitely nicer and stronger. But it absolutely will not save someone money within the span of 1 lifetime. Might save their kids or grandkids money. & astro turf over aluminum? 😅 that’s a great way to make your $50,000 dock look like a $5k dock…

    • Hey hey! Yes! Have seen those in a number of places, very cool initiatives. Unfortunately it’s not so much a question as to whether or not we would like something like that, as much as how we could ever afford it haha. Tampa received that $500,000 EPA grant & has multiple nonprofits solely dedicated to keeping it clean.. given that Fontana Dam is a town of a whopping 7 permanent residents, I don’t know that we could ever dream of securing funding or help like that haha. We have a very hard time just getting the $8k or so needed for the cleanup each year. That all being said… if you have any contacts or info about how to get a big grant for something like that we are all ears! 😋 we’ve asked around in our network & just can’t seem to find a lead for anything that substantial. But who knows! Maybe one day 🤞

I've lived on the Res forover 7years I've picked up plenty of trash from both Red and White Their theory is it creates a job for somebody. Some trash is nature caused ,like the wind that took a piece of sheet metal from me, I've looked over a mile surrounding area and can not find it. Flash Floods can take anything from a trash bag to a stack of dried Lumber. Over turned boats and items from drowning victims add to the mess that is all caught downstream at Fontana.Give credit where it is due and don't take all the blame . By January 24 I will be living at Fontana Lake, see you then
