A Couple On A Mission To Launch A Floating Mansion | Massive Moves | Documentary Central

Imagine the challenge of moving an entire house from one location to another-the fixtures, walls, and roof all in tact-through a major city, over a mountain, or even across a lake! These are some of the challenges specialised moving teams and engineers routinely face in Massive Moves.
Whether it’s moving an historic home from an eroding cliff, relocating from a noisy industrial pig farm, or divorcing couples sawing their home in half to split ownership, no problem is too big for these teams

    • but it would have made the project more complicated because being on the water would only give access to the exterior from one side, making it hard to work on the other 3 areas outside the house. Material storage would be more difficult too, having only dock-side available. And there is cost to consider. Taking up a dock space to build the house on water is a lot more expensive than building it on land.

      @9TDF@9TDF2 ай бұрын
    • @@9TDF... you heard the part where it was explained that the builder owns the shipyard and land on which the house was initially built, right? So that means he has the space available already. Furthermore, there is a lot more space available on land compared to along a river because a dry dock needs to be docked alongside land on the river and having a dry dock take up mooring space for as long as it took to build that house is not very practical. Also, a dry-dock is a bathtub and everything, materials and equipment have to be lowered into that tub so you need a crane or other equipment to move every item, especially larger and heavier ones, down into that tub.

It looked heavier on one end than the other before it went into the water as the third story was on one side. I'm also wondering if there was a size restraint that you couldn't exceed because I would have made the float wider so that you could walk around it and to give it more stability. Beautiful home and such a commanding location.

    • Modern log floats last more like 70 years. And individual logs can be replaced as necessary. Also, don't forget that a steel hull is subject to rust. Most steel hulls are repainted more often than ever ten years. What a chore that's going to be here!

    • @@briangodfrey7424 oh to be clear this particular design seems really over the top to me. I'm thinking more in terms of steel or aluminum pontoons.

      @0xKruzr@0xKruzr3 ай бұрын
    • @@0xKruzr Logs that meet the building code (yes, there is one for floating homes) will probably outlast steel or aluminum pontoons. Or the metal ones will need to be removed every so often and repainted, fasteners replaced, etc. At least that would be easier than repainting this one single large float! But if there are stray currents, galvanic corrosion can really shorten the life a lot. I had an aluminum boat once that spent two years in a marina where there were a lot of small fishing boats - some of which probably had improperly installed electronics. When I hauled it the pitting was severe. As for the overall design sense of this house. Well, it is huge, but aside from that it is unique. And that is one of the wonderful things about floating homes: no two are alike.
