The Razer Blade 18 is the most luxurious gaming laptop around, but who is it for?

2023 ж. 19 Сәу.
105 324 Рет қаралды

Razer says the new Blade 18 is the most powerful laptop it’s ever built. However, with a fully loaded model coming in at a whopping $4,500, it’s way out of reach for pretty much everyone. So instead, we called in a base model that goes for a slightly more affordable $2,900 to try and figure out who this thing is really for.
Read our full review of Razer Blade 18 here: www.engadget.com/razer-blade-...
Price: Starts at $2,900
Pros: Big 240Hz display, premium aluminum chassis, supports top-notch components, great port selection
Cons: Extremely expensive, short battery life, big, no additional display options

  • I have an Apple M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16 for trading and it's a good system for it. The downside is that there's a moderate amount of trading software that runs best on Windows. My trading software runs but there are times when I'd like 2 screens on the road. The options out there are a portable 18 inch UHD monitor or a second laptop. Apple's laptops don't give you standard native resolutions so I have to adjust my setup when switching between desktop and laptop. So something like this with a UHD display would be great for traders. Traders usually don't need a lot of CPU and GPU capability but do need RAM which isn't a problem on these. The Razer 17.3 does have a UHD option but it would be nice to have the 18. I have a Swissgear Carbon 17 bag from 2008 which would probably hold this laptop. 2008 was an era when laptops were routinely 7-9 pounds and a lot thicker than today.

  • How come you compared the 16 inch to an 18 inch then say it's so much bulkier. That like comparing a 2 door coupe to a four door sedan and saying the 4 door sedan is bigger. You could have talked about screen resolution and it would make more sense.

  • Ideally this would get used by engineers that have "home"work. Take it to the office, run your amazing 3D CAD applications using a solid external monitor option. Take it into the meeting rooms for colab and use it there as well, easy to hook it into a TV or projector. At home there is enough screen real estate to be able to do some updates or to write documentation. I do not think so much that this is for content creators t.b.h. The base model you got has, of course, the minimum amount of RAM and as an architect you would go for minimum of 64Gb and the video card choice is okay, but the drivers are always an issue. You need to use the latest, but they need to be certified to run with the software you are using - and that cat and mouse game will never end. Sure, you can do all of this on a 15" Dell XPS for instance, but it behooves you to take into consideration the cooling and the screen real estate. I have a 16" MBP for personal use, and my work laptop is 13" (not for much longer I hope). The difference in screen real estate is amazing. The 13" used to be my preferred laptop size, but not anymore. The premium price will be of no consideration for the right audience. Corporations might buck at the cost, eventually it is about productivity and ROI.

  • This is why you buy it in 2 years for $1500. Also, people that can afford to pay 4500 have more than 1 laptop & tablet for various needs- home, office, travel, gaming - one guy I know has a device in every room of the house. Unsurprisingly they also have more than 1 car. You wouldn't drive a Rolls to the supermarket. Something to ponder when you review luxury products and ask "Who is it for?"

As a working pro, you can't drag those machines into an office, you really can't. So the Razer series bridges the gap between powerful (gaming) laptop that's usable for CGI but without the price tag of a "dedicated" mobile work station with mostly lower specs even yet with a respectable aesthetics. So there ya go. Picking my new RB 18 up tomorrow.

  • I bought a laptop two days ago and I considered the Blade 18. I agree with this review. It's priced far too much. I'm a software engineer and I don't care for HX processors, or large power bricks. I would have liked to see a lower specced option with H series processors and I would even settle for a 4050 for the lower price point and more portable power brick (Lenovo matches smaller power bricks depending on specific configuration). I ended up selecting the XPS 17 with a 13700H and 4070. But if Razer had a product within the right price range, I might have gone with the 18... Because their screen options did appear superior since I didn't want a touch screen. They offered higher refresh and higher resolutions for non-touch. The premium chassis on the Blades, and center keyboard were huge features for me as a software engineer.

  • I’ll play a game,to count my money, and if I have enough I’ll buy the best 4K UHD Intel Core i9 gaming laptop right now. I’ll pay less,I think their new releases are not worth it. UHD 4K display + graphics card is the next gen evolution, you can't rivalise with this for the display. Then, with video games they only ask for Intel Core ... i7 or i9 and graphics cards, processors is not the point. Well I’m not saying that I’ll get a machine with low processors I’ll get a machine with very good ones. Well I think that 4K UHD is not for now and companies doesn't want to sell those new computers. Ok they win, damned computers evolution,it’s always like that. I’ll search again.

    • That's probably cause of the cost of the gaming laptop + the extra stuffs that they put on those version + the cost of the 4K UHD display. I’ll buy the Asus Rog Strix G18.

    • Sometimes 4k makes no sense, it's just a marketing gimmick . They put 4k on a 13 inch to 16 inch laptops and then scale it 200% or more (technically you are not getting any 4k. If they scalled it to 100% it will be too tiny you can't read anything on them. An 18 inch laptop QHD scaling at less than 200% is probably giving you better resolution than the 16 inch 4k😅. QHD in 2023 looks better than 4k in 2015 because there are more factors than just 4k, including Dolby, HDR, mini led etc added to screens today. QHD on 18 screen likely better than 4k on smaller screen becauseof the scaling factor. It depends on who is making the screen and which year. Samsung makes better screens than Philips for example. You may not be able to tell the difference in screen resolution until after 32 inch if all the screens below 32 inch are having the same factors (hdr, mini led, dolby or whatever packed in them are the similar). Usually they will just pack more tech resolution features (the dolby, and hdr etc in what they are marketing as 4k screen and, have less of those on the lower resolution ones. Either than that for laptop screens a QHD shouldn't be different from 4k- when the scaling screen in the smaller 4k screen will have to be increased at 200% or more to be readable (its same as reducing the pixels). My 16 inch 4k laptop is automatically scalled at 200% (recommended by windows). Make it is scale at 100% and it will be too tiny to read any letters on it. Razer blade used mini led panel (better panel) for the 4k 16 inch , but uses IPS for the QHD 18 inch panel. For the same panel type and screen features a qhd on 18 inch laptop will be better than 4k on a small 16 inch because of scaling factor. Buy another qhd 18 inch laptop from another brand that provides mini led, or hdr on an 18 inch qhd.

    • @@kwadwo1000Ye that's what I've found and the laptop screen have a Rog Nebula display and the built-in display is 16: 10. The graphics card is Geforce RTX 4090. I have a 4K UHD OLED external monitor 48" flat(it's bigger cause it's taller and still large). 4K Laptops posses 4K UHD graphics cards, it's not only the screen that display in 4K. The built-in computer 4K UHD is something very strong and probably impressive. The image definition + the type of 3D is still something impressive. The sound and everything won't reach the "production" if it's not built-in,"it's only (1" cause watching the screen is either something very very important) watching the screen or recording with it's speakers. I think that "they" will probably release new types of Windows version soon. Then we would be able to get the 4K or maybe the 8K.

    • @@kwadwo1000 Maybe sometimes it would require something (added) even more to really be something even more extremely spectacular. Like buying 4K movies and watching it with a 8K TV or a very very good machine with a 8K built-in technologie and a 4K huge monitor. Just like doing everything with that. On the makings they should either improve the making, and for the movies while filming the other aspect would be the different types of technologies and the megapixels of the camcorder.

  • I have a very hard time understanding who a laptop like the Blade 18 is for. If you buy a higher spec model, the cost is so high that you might as well just get a desktop for gaming and an iPad for doing work on the go. The Blade 15 is an older design but it is still probably a better option for most buyers. I have one as my personal laptop. My work computer is a MacBook pro 16. The blade is more portable than my MacBook pro 16. It is also extremely competent at gaming, gets more than enough useable battery life for most situations, and costs thousands less than a highly spec'd blade 18.

  • Why in the world would an 18" laptop not come with a numpad/10-key? There's so much wasted space flanking that keyboard that it's not only unappealing aesthetically, but it's wasteful in terms of space. And a 4060 laptop for nearly three grand? Hard pass.
