The teacher is great, he doesn't even blink when Buddy tries his intimidation lunge. The world needs teachers like this.
Even as an actor I thought that was quite impressive to be honest!
What amazed me is that the teacher grabbed Buddy by the shirt and acted like he was going to kick his ass. Times really have changed. Nowadays if a teacher even touches a student, the teacher might get fired, even if the student is physically beating up another student. Those were the days when teachers could paddle a kid, or smoke in the teachers lounge.
Especially when they are dealing with guys like Buddy Reperton who appears to have been kept back about 15 years
A teacher that cares, not many of those around much.
Damn right.
Dennis was a true friend to Arnie, wiling to jump in and stick up for him despite being outnumbered. It’s sad their friendship gets torn apart

It's also a movie. I think they're still friends in real life

I love the transformation Arnie makes throughout the movie. He goes from a meek, nerdy individual to an unhinged psychopath throughout the runtime.
@Beatnik A sign of power, as if to say, "there there little man...there's gonna be some changes around here".
He got stronger mentally
Keith Gordon is such a great actor and perfectly cast here.
“Let me tell you something about love, Dennis. It has a voracious appetite.” The crazy look he had on his face when he said that line was scary as hell.
IKR? Arnie turned from geek to gorgeus in my own personal opinion!
Ah yes, the switchblade, the standard equipment of 80s and 90s movie bullies.

That’s exactly what teachers back in high school were like in the 1980’s. Most male teachers were Korean or Vietnam war veterans and they didn’t take shit off of ANY punk! 🤣
Teacher didn't even flinch when Buddy bowed up on him. Guy was probably a Korean War vet who wouldn't be intimidated by a 35 year old high schooler.
I’ve always been crazy about that actor. I’ve seen him play MANY different roles.
He was 24 at the time but he did look much older
The teacher was played by David Spielberg, who according to a Wikipedia article served in the US Navy for two years.

It makes it all the more satisfying to watch as Christine takes care of Arnies "problems".
The casting is one of the reasons this movie is a success - David Spielberg as the shop teacher, Prosky as Darnell, Blossom as LeBay, Harry Dean Stanton as the detective.
Darnell was hilarious, loved the way he had a go at Arnie when he turned up at the scrap yard. Just brilliant.
Kelly Preston
Any relation to Steven Spielberg?
The casting and also the score by Carpenter.

It’s a shame teachers cannot handle bullies like that anymore instead they have to go let them fill out paperwork on the situation 🤦♂️🤦♂️ can someone explain to me who ever thought that was a good idea to handle hoodlum kids like buddy?
And when kids start either handling it themselves or shoot up schools, then teacher want to say something.
@@omarcogle1965 I don’t understand what you are trying to say. Can you elaborate please?

Yeah. John Travolta sucks in my opinion. I never liked that actor in anything he was in.
@@pootypump7440 Who asked you if he was good or bad?
This is why I have no sympathy for what happens to these bullies later on. People like that have hate bred into them. They live to be mean, torment and hurt others. And as a former bullied in high school kid, I know my bully still lives in my home town and still a POS and being indigenous, even now the law gives him so much leeway to the point of only once he commits murder (which I still think he is more than capable of), only then would they lock him up.
In old days (tribal) he'd be dead from a raid or banished. Today he flourishes because society protects him.
I'm indigenous, and I'm white.
Sounds like you need a possessed car restoration project?
The problem with bullies and the authorities is that the authorities (cops, teachers etc) literally can't do a thing unless they either catch them in the act or they do something bad enough for witnesses to come forward. If Dennis hadn't gone down into the shop, I'm not saying Buddy would have ended up stabbing Arnie, but he and his gang (Moochie, Trelawney and Vandenberg) certainly would have terrorized the living hell out of him.
most bullies forgot about bullshit they did as kids or regret it. You still think about what some guy did to you in high school. You have some serious problems, really.
This was a very intense scene. Realistic like movies can't duplicate these days.
Bullying is far more prevalent and worse in schools with alot of blacks. This movie would be more realistic if Buddy Repperton and his buddies were played by black gangsta rapper dudes or whatever the equivalent was back then.

All in all it wasn't a bad first day.
🤣
When I was in grade 9, this is how the grade 12's were. They drove Cudas and Malibus, and they looked they were 35.
Way back when, the Junior High school and High School were physically connected. You had kids who still believed in Santa Claus mixed in with young men who were purposely failing to avoid being sent to Vietnam. It wasn't good for the younger kids.
I was always jealous of those guys in high school that had bushy side burns.....I had peach fuzz until I was twenty, but i've noticed those guys did not age well.......when they hit 50 they looked 70.
