WHAT A FINISH!!

UCC star Phil Healy “came from the depths of hell” to claim a thrilling victory in the women’s 4x400m relay at the Irish Universities Track and Field Championships in Santry last weekend.
The Cork college looked to be way out of contention when Healy took the baton on for the anchor leg in fifth position of seven runners. UCD looked to be in command with just 400m to go, leading UL by 30m and CIT a further 5m in arrears.
But in an incredible final lap, as commentators Ronan Duggan and Cathal Dennehy considered the race for second place as the only one worth watching, UL’s Michelle Finn reeled in the leader with almost 200m to spare and looked certain to snatch gold for Limerick.
However, as she began to fade, Healy, summoning every last ounce of energy, stormed down the outside to pip Finn at the line in the most dramatic of circumstances.
The 21-year-old Irish international sprinter from Bandon AC had previously won the women’s 200m at the meeting in 23.93 and she fell over the line after the exhausting effort, to the delight of two ecstatic, and increasingly high-pitched, commentators.
Enjoy.
FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL...iconic commentary
+pulluptheroots - ...and almost falling off the balcony. priceless
+pulluptheroots hahhaa, listened to that portion a few times myself.
+pulluptheroots Definitely the best phrase to describe where that girl came from to win the race.
Hilarious!
"UCC FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL" - commentator LOL
Epic come-back; massive dive; outrageous commentary. This clip has it all!
And a girl named Phil.
The collapse at the finish line. Dramatic AF
The female commentator should have a place in commentating BPL
@nishan syed there’s no female commentator, it’s Cathao and Ronan, one being my school coach and the other being an independent journalist
Sadly the IAA stupidly dropped them the day before the commentary of the Nationals this year leaving 2 muppets to fill in. Shocking stuff considering these 2 were our finest
This is easily one of the best videos on KZhead. An absolutely impossible feat of sport before our very eyes... and the best commentary the world has ever heard. Lmao 3:56
The two lads commentating deserve a medal as well! Made the whole thing even better! XD. Well done Phil on the comeback!
The first time the girl that eventually wins the race enters the SCREEN is at 3:38 or so, and she's around 50 meters behind with the leader only having about 200 meters left to run. I've never seen anything like this.
Happens in horse racing all the time.
@@raygordonteacheschess5501 🤣👋
Every time I need some motivation I come back to this race💪👍
The commentators with the World Class call !! "UCC FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL" .... they got me hype like i was watching the Kentucky Derby LOL
i agree. didnt realize i was holding my breath! ha
ive watched this 3 times and cried each time. that was heroic.
infinite3joy it brings me to tears every time too. It's an outrageous final lap.
I thought I was the only one ..... I also cried. Wow what an amazing and historic comeback!
Me too! But then those two guys could make you cry watching grass grow. What a run and what a call.
I did too
I also cried!
University College Cork nursing student Phil Healy, quoted in the Irish Examiner: "It was crazy because we didn’t expect to win and I only decided to run 20 minutes before the event. I had ran (sic) in the 100 and 200 metres and one of the girls just asked would I fill in on the last leg and I said 'throw me in and I’ll see what I can do'".
That's future olympian Phil Healy; did the other "future olympian" Michelle Finn (sp?) make it?
@@raygordonteacheschess5501 Yep, she ran for Ireland in the 3,000 metres steeplechase at the Summer Olympics in Rio in 2016 finishing 11th in her heat.
@@DaveKahn Meanwhile Phil Healy is still a star and probably was the better runner.
"Helloooo!" "From the depths of hell!!!" haha Fucking legends
i spoke to soon
Does anyone else cry watching this? As an athlete this is what it’s all about
A tear on the 1000th rewatch still. With no chance in hell so she left the depths of hell
Yes, and I'm certainly not an athlete. The girl ran out of her skin!
Yep
Facts
Phil Healy is the Irish nurse/students name. the footage has become the most watched athletic clip in recent days and someone needs to get this women in front of the camera so we can all see her again and find out what her reaction was to the clip going viral. Come on Irish News. This is one Irish girl to be proud of
well she is representing in the olympics
Healy made the olympics this year.
Cathal Dennehy (depths of hell guy) was on the Dan Patrick show this morning talking about the race/call. Epic radio. He tells Dan, ya we pretty much lost our minds, our composure, our professionalism.. Definitely worth a listen.
Did he happen to mention did that other girl wear them heels after.
Son of a @#$%&! That's the LAST time I'll ever bet on the IUAA Womens 4 x 400m relay final.
This is such an underrated comment
400m split ? Read further down Whatever you think, I still believe it is one of the most impressive comebacks ever (with Floria Guei in an other 4x400m). After spending wayyyyyy too much time watching the video dozens of times, I calculated her split time to be between 52"5 and 54". I don't know how old she was at the time but since then, she got the 100 m and 200 m Irish records and she has also run the 400m in around 52s. As far as I know, she's on her way to the Olympics next summer (while studying/working as a nurse), so kudos to you Phil !!!
"From the depths of hell!" Now THAT'S some good color commentary.
I love that commentary of "Coming from the depths of Hell". That was a very vivid description of just how much distance she had to make-up. This young lady really overcame some serious distance to obtain this team win. She believed in herself and never quit and that faith had her standing on the winner's podium. There is a movie in this story.
Wow "from the depths of hell" might be my favorite track announcer commentary EVER!!
To be sure the girl who won had one heck of a leg coming back from "the depth of hell" and giving it all! What a performance for her team!
I used to run track in the 80s, high school and college. That final lap brought tears of joy! I miss that fighting spirit to make it to the tape.
Commentators could barely speak clearly they were so excited at the end LOL!
KZhead was made to preserve and publicize moments like this.
"from the depths of hell". I cant get enough of this video. it has it all from suspense, rising action, and a surprise ending
Absolutely loved this. The race was crazy considering I like the callers had picked different place getters though me more so on each lap. But the purity of the commentary, excited, enthused, REAL.... that was sport at its finest moment. Just unbridled passion.... oh and to top it off, the accents.... love the Irish... best wishes from New Zealand.
That’s my coach (the guy who doesn’t say from the depths of hell) and yes he gets insanely excited about athletics. Absolute legend (and his cork accent does make it x10 better)
If you have ever ran a 400m at full pace you will understand how incredible this is. Wow!
Soo true a lot easier to run a straight line
+Stansla Michael the curve isn't what make it hard...
If you've ever lost to a racehorse who didn't even enter the television picture until the far turn, you'd know it happens very often.
@@iratepeople455 Actually it is a little bit. Running in straight line is easy when you are tired rather than in a curve as you also have to balance your weight while turning.
The 400 is often termed the most difficult distance....as it is neither truly a sprint nor a distance run......when I ran track, the most brutal of all workouts involved 400 meter intervals.
Salute to women in red. You were great. Your fan from Russia :))))
01:19 "...CIT at the moment in second as I nearly fall off the balcony. I'll step forward. It's safe, and..." "Exciting times, Cathal." "It is."
dear bbc hire the commentator now
wouldn't wish that on anyone.
A truly epic effort... inspirational and outstanding! "UCC from THE DEPTHS OF HELL is pumping through!!!" so good...
Ha! You may be right! I listened to it two more times and couldn't tell 🙂
Love that a runner from another team checks on her! good on you for that sportsmanship!
SHE CAME OUT OF NOWHERE WHAT THE HELL
What the depths of hell!
she came from the depths of hell, of course
1. Incredible finish to go from almost last place to first! 2. Wow, I feel terrible for the girl in yellow going from first in a ginormous lead to dead last.
+ChristophProbst There were seven teams, and Phil Healy (girl in red) went from fifth to first, and the girl in yellow went from first to fifth. So neither of them were ever "dead last".
This race was one for the record. What a never surrender attitude. Congratulations on that miracle finish!
was this on tursday the turty-turd. The squealing commentary at the end is priceless.
lol
+Damian Rangi pardon my ignorance but what is tursday the turty-turd?
+Damian Rangi LMAO
+Declan Silvine :DD
+Damian Rangi I know, it's sounds terrible. They just don't seem to hear themselves, or maybe they just don't care. Just put the tongue a little bit further toward the lower rim of the teeth, and it comes out right.
This is incredible. The first in line (yellow) turns out to be the last runner while the last in line (red) turns out to be the final winner. Epic "depths of hell" commentary!
wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! That's an incredibly distance to make up in one trip around the track. I've never seen anyone make up so much in one lap.
+Nice and Easy she did great. it helped her a lot that 2 of the leading girls began to blowout. you could see the cringe in her face at the end because her leg was giving up on her.
Ozzy Man Reviews anyone!?
+ThatAussieGirl ozzymans commentary was great
Ucc from the depths of hell😂😂😂😂
I had to rewind and see, in my own words, "where the *** did that girl in red/orange even come from?!?" Found 3:39, DANG
The 400m takes pure grit and shows your true colors. I can say that even though i'm in excruciating pain it is one of my favorites races, along with the 200m.
Brilliant race (from all 28 athletes) including the fabulous commentary. This is what athletics should be all about - everyone giving it their all. Yes, it's not a time to set the world on fire, but who cares? Everyone's clean and determined to win and the race is unbelievably entertaining. I've watched this with my kids a hundred times and we've loved every second, including the honest and fun commentary. You can take your Olympics and shove it up your arse as far as I'm concerned. Kudos.
The most amazing thing is there were no more than 200 people watching this live and yet they were so into it.
"From the depths of hell" has to be the best commentary I have heard in a while.
I keep coming back to see this over and over.
A real Maggie Vessey style win !!
The commentary definitely fit the race perfectly! I've never seen anyone deserve to win so much.
Absolutely A-M-A-Z-I-N-G-! There is no such thing as second place for those who desire to win. She had her focus, not on her position and not on her circumstances but on "Her Purpose"! If you have failed in life; if you have fallen; if you find yourself far behind - DO NOT FOCUS ON YOUR POSITION - FOCUS ON YOUR DESIRE AND PURPOSE! You CAN come from the deepest of hell holes and succeed at whatever you set your heart towards. GIVE ALL YOU HAVE AND GO FOR IT! YOU GOT THIS! YOU GOT THIS! I promise you, YOU GOT THIS!
HOLY SHIT! I stand up to this woman! That was a magnificent race! That was the best finish I have seen ever! Good job everyone! This was truly a great suspense action scene.
This is epic. It has to be in top 10 videos on the internet ever filmed. It's a shame so few know about this.
Wow... From worst to first. What an Epic Finale. Great finish *and that commentary was funny*
+walter msechu And from first to worst! Why was that woman running anchor???
Run out of breath just watching this.
Maybe the wrong person got picked for the Olympic team?
+Qwerty Qwerty That would explain it! Thanks for the clarification.
"FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL, SHE CLIMBS HER WAY BACK!" greatest line in this video
from the depths of hell he said and I lost it
UCC FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL 😂😂😂😂 This was an incredible race but the announcers just made it so much better
Holy crap, what a race!!! Have never even heard of these school before but with the great performances and amazing commentating, I was enthralled from start to finish.
Might be 3 years late but i'll give you run down UCC- University college cork DCU - Dublin city university DIT - Dublin institute of technology CIT- Cork institute of technology UCD - University College Dublin Trinity - trinity university...they dont do initials!!
The Rocky theme was playing in her head.
+Kegan Terry no it was chariots of fire lol
+Kegan Terry If it was "Rocky", she would have lost, but at least she would have finished!
I have watched this many times, it is still great.
I haven't seen this clip in 5 yrs it still cemented in my brain "UCC FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL, WHAT A RUN!"
The commentary is priceless. Well done lads. And obviously Ms. Healy. Go on Cork!! A win for my old college UCC. Terrific stuff
WHAT A RACE... WHAT A finish! THAT VID ...fantastic. One of the most motivational you´ll ever have. Great!
That was BEYOND amazing!!!
"She is engineering her way up through the field here!" Brilliant commentary!
Yellow team's anchor leg thoughts during the last few seconds: "Look at these fools using up all their energy! I'll pass them all on the second lap."
this would go in as one of the greats ..
3:35 turbo blaster jets of the steeplechase specialists! 3:50 here comes where's wally 3:55 UCC FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL ARE POWERING THROUGH!
This never gets old
Loved it!!! the 2 young men commentators sounded like two old very excited british women.....excellent!!!!!!!! and he closed out with "Phil Healy what a run!" You can't fake that, they are the real deal.....Bravo!!!
What a come back from Phil Healy bring home the gold Ireland is proud of you no matter what
idk why, but I was just hearing them, waiting for something like "and here comes SCOTT STERLING!!"
me too mate it felt empty
Oh my, that was amazing 😂 thank you for that!
That was f'n gold
Not world class runners....but world class courage and heart.
Sometimes I come back to watch this just to remember "NEVER GIVE UP!"
Give that Healy girl a medal, and then fast track her to whatever national team will have her! That is the most incredible final leg of a 4x400m race I've ever seen from a runner. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!! That's heart and determination, right there. They should show this video in schools. See you in Rio. Well done!!!!
+AGITPROP65 4 seconds off from national record in ireland
+brettjay I've emailed RTE to see if they can get her on the Late Late asap! It would triple the ratings!
Wow, so good I watched it twice. He legs were almost a blur! Thanks for posting this. I love track.
Oh my God!! My belly hurts from laughing so hard lmao
this and "hear comes diggins" are some of my favorite race commentaries ever xD
Looking at this after they mention it in my 'First Year Guide to Success' UCC booklet on the Clubs page! Forgot how great this race was!
She wasn't even in the same time zone... and won. Incredible.
Giving it her all, that's the mind of a true athlete right there.
There's no way the 137 people who disliked the video actually watched it till the end.
nah they were all Trinity students... Apparently there wasn't enough attention paid to their university in this video
In an internet full of sensationalist headlines that almost always fail to deliver, this one is the real deal. Truly amazing.
I get chills every time I watch this.
With about 50 meters to go, all training and skill went out the window. Only heart and desire won that race.
Holy Shit. UCC was like a 150m behind at the start of the 4th lap! Insanity and what perfect commentary!!!
3:05 is the start of the final lap and all the action.
Wow wow wow, what a suspense race... me and my wife was cheering as we are right in the action. Truly amazing comeback!!
I guess the way to think about this race is that Phil Healy -- the girl in the red vest who finished first -- is a national champion sprinter. The rest of the runners are average (or slower) college runners. I timed the girl in the yellow vest, who led at the last handoff, at a pedestrian 68 seconds. Blue vest and red/white vest were around 61 seconds. Healy, who has an international quality 200m best of 23 seconds, may have run 53-54 seconds for the final leg, which was well within her capabilities. It was a dramatic finish, but not a surprise.
+Christopher Hosford And, I should add, the yellow-vest team obviously loaded their best runners first, to hopefully built up a lead that they could hold on to. Didn't work out, but it's not a bad strategy --IF your opponent doesn't have an internationalist on the final leg.
I think what people enjoy is the fact that despite her calibre, it took every ounce she had to win it. FYI the girl she beat on the line is an Olympian. Albeit a Steeplechaser, but not your average athlete.
@@christopherhosford7805 good observation! Front end loading is often a good strategy to give the 2nd leg runner an easier time, and also it get lead position at the 200m mark and hence pole position for the next changeover. But when team contains someone of Phil Healy's calibre (current 400 PB 52 s) , that one HAS to run anchor.
"From the depths of the hell" lol. That was hilarious. Craaaaaazzzy finish.
haha best commentary ever
This remains one of the best things on the internet!
I've never had enough of this race!
...from the DEPTHS OF HELL.... (lol!!!!!)
When you've got a race at 12:30 but your husband's flight from Afghanistan arrives at 12:35
Anyone still watching this in 2019?
No 2021 actually if you can believe it
I remember watching this years ago, still just as epic my god what a finish!
Wow. That finish definitely lived up to the post title. That was an awesome comeback!
I got tears welled up in my eyes.
The way the commentary said "FROM THE DEPTS OF HELL" had me rollin.
I should be out practicing for my upcoming pub crawl, but I just keep watching it, over and over.
