Water buffaloes called on to clear UK's channels

Conservationists in the UK have turned to water buffaloes as a solution to the vegetation overgrowth in crucial water channels. Water buffaloes have wide splayed feet which prevent them from sinking into mud. This allows them to move freely through the waterways, eating through dense grass. Julide Ayger reports from the Ham Fen nature reserve in Kent.

  • Most people don't even realise that it's a native species that once roamed Europe and UK, (well not really this secies wich is a domesticated version of a wild asiatic specie, but there was an european water buffaloes quite recently in fossils record, Buballus murrensis or something like that) same for lion, leopard, hyena, bison, auroch, wild donkey and wild horses, wolves, lynx, bears etc. never heard of shifting baselines ?

    • The ancient European buffalo and the modern domestic buffalo are not the same species, Bubalus murrensis has been extinct for more than 11,000 years. There are two types of modern domestic buffaloes, the river buffalo and the swamp type. Both of them originated in South and Southeast Asia, and they are not good at adapting to severe cold climates, although they are also very afraid of heat. I don't really understand why the British do this. If they want to rewild the British wilderness then I think they should bring wild Asiatic buffalo from India and if they want to improve the grazing structure they should bring in Carpathian water buffalo from Romania and Ukraine which is already The most cold tolerant of the known buffalo breeds. However the buffalo meat was not tasty.

    • @@vermouthstone9446 Domestic Asian buffaloes have been living in Europe for many centuries, since the Middle Ages at least. And the cold was never an issue. While the Asian buffalo (wild type) is a different species to the extinct European buffalo, they're the same genus, very closely related, and almost identical physiologically. As for the British, they're not rewilding these buffaloes. Domestic buffaloes are owned by farmers throughout Europe and they're just using the buffaloes to help in farming. I do agree that wild Asian buffaloes should be the only option for rewilding. They may not be as acclimated as the ones that lived in Europe for centuries, but they would adjust soon enough just like their domestic counterparts did. If that's too risky, they could mix with established European domestics to get some of their resistance to local diseases/climate.

  • None such thing as Indian subcontinent. Please stop insulting Pakistan and Bangladesh, Nepal etc. Proper terminology is South Asia. India is a foreign name adopted by the political entity ruled from Delhi. Did not expect TRT to fall for Hindutva trickery and advance their narrative

    • hum India was an entire other searate continent and is on it's own continental plate, but now it's going north inside the asiatic continent (creating the himalayas) so it's is a sub-continent. so i think that indian subcontinent is a real and valid term.
