@MJB For Trump Hmmmm......UV rays used to kill viruses are Medical Grade....and harmful to humans....articles citing this go back years....they are used on medical equipment only. Injecting household disinfectant can...and does lead to death. I have seen some pretty nasty results when people inject substances under the skin....or inhale such substances....resulting in the degradation of skin and lung tissue...causing permanent damage. For the President to suggest this in a press briefing.....meant to INFORM the public...is at the least, careless....at the most, murderous....as he failed to say...."don't try this at home".

You have every right to contact local law enforcement--or, if you don't trust them, phone the FBI and report the people who are threatening you. Keep notes as to the threats and who makes them; you can report them to members of the opposite political party in Florida (where there are many high-profile Democrats). It's one thing to have political disagreements, quite another to feel threatened. Threatening people via telephone or text is a crime.

We absolutely did not need this crisis to happen. What we needed is elected officials with the right priorities. Embracing covid-19 as necessary is a bit disrespectful to those who have lost friends or family as a result of contracting the virus.
The packaging is completely different for food for industrial/restaurant places and grocery store/home use. Tlyou buy a package of shredded cheese in the grocery store that weights 8oz, whereas, a restaurant purchases it 160oz packages. The processing and packaging plants aren't set up to simply change the packaging. You buy a dozen eggs. A restaurant buys them by the groce. Huge difference.

@@B_Bodziak I used to receive food for a restaurant. I know that the packaging is different. Rather than try to repackage, or donate the food for others to distribute, they gave up. People still need to eat, but corporations are profit driven, so they don't care.
We have far too long put too little emphasis on the importance of those individuals working in farming, food processing services, and grocery stores. While I give props to the medical professionals fighting this pandemic, they make a good living not just a living wage. Many, if not most of the people who ensure we can run up the road and fill a cart with food DO NOT MAKE A LIVING WAGE. So..Dear Verizon, How about offering $30.00 cell plans to the people who $truggle every week and are critically essential to eating??
I just want to add that nurses are overworked and underpaid. There are lots of support staff who are paid minimally, but are just as exposed. Think of the scribes in the ER. Some of them are studying to get into med school. There are LOTS of essential workers who are not given enough respect.
I get your point about food service workers and grocery store employees; I was one once upon a time. But, nurses and interns, the real front line medical personal, are still way underpaid for what they're doing.

I have my doubts about nurses making a good living. Okay, matter of definition; if "good living" means that they aren't swallowed up by debts ... but I think they are risking their lives to save others, and in some cases other who got sick simply because they licked up that "self-isolation is slavery" garbage. Others are worse off, yes. There are always others that are worse off. Going "let's ignore those guys now, because look over there, they have even less ..." ? I think that comes dangerously close to playing off one profession against the other, and that usually leads to nobody of the working class winning and some business advisor advocating layoffs getting his/her next bonus.

it's crazy to think that all of this news happened this week.
I’m 64, and I remember the government handing out cheese, canned vegetables, rice, canned meat, flour, etc. These were surplus food commodity’s that the government paid for. Where are these items today, and is the government still stockpiling?
I remember they came from the Dept.of Agriculture. Milk, cheese, Peanut butter,meats. Maybe they're saving them with the masks the Feds. are intercepting from States.
those were called commodities. they were replaced for the most part with food stamps. i live in east Tennessee and i remember in the early 80's, when i was in the boy scouts, staying all night in the lost sea and there beings shipping containers full of food because that was our fall out shelter in case of nuclear war. they are not there anymore either.
I think they are stockpiling Lawyers, Guns & Money! (dad get me outta here).
In answer to the question about commodities, I live in a Retirement Community that is a HUD building. Most of us qualify for the commodity program. Most of the items are canned goods, and always include a chunk of processed cheese, oatmeal and some pasta. I'm also on Food Stamps, This week I asked to have my name taken off the commodity list because I have strict dietary restrictions and am unable to use most of the items. Check with your county representative to find out if you qualify. (I'm also on Medicaid and Medicare, which may be qualifications for the program, but your county social service representative can speak to your concerns.) I hope this helps.

The system for large scale food donation is lacking. The cost of shipping and distributing the food to charities would be equivalent to sending it to restaurants, and the donor is the one paying. Also, the tax laws regarding those kinds of donations change regularly so any tax benefits are difficult to determine in advance. The total cost of distributing food on that scale can actually be prohibitive.

@@stormyweather8798 I really haven't noticed people avoiding produce at the food banks I've been at over the years unless the produce happens to be moldy or rotting. I live in a big urban area. And some of the food banks here often have little to no fresh produce to give away. Believe me, people here would line up for that produce. Not to say that there isn't a problem with fake/processed foods but it's the cheapness and storage of canned and even processed food that makes some difference.
@@TypeOneg There might be organizations that deal with that. I know there's one called Food Not Bombs that goes around and collects unwanted produce to pass out to those who want it. You don't even have to be needy or provide documentation. You just show up and they give away what they have. It's not in every town though. There's a couple chapters of it where I live. One passes out produce and breads. The other cooks some kind of meal and passes it out. Companies also donate some leftover foods now to food banks. They get tax deductions and they deliver it themselves. Some restaurants do the same.

I’m curious why farms are dumping produce when we still have hungry people in our country? Are we that averse to helping the needy? (Yes, that’s a rhetorical question.)
They do it because they need to get paid for their work.
They do it because the processing plants are closing and the distribution companies can't deliver to the restaurants and businesses that are closed. Farmers grow the crops and raise the livestock, but they are not set up to process or distribute. If they had someone to take it off their hands, I'm sure they would be willing to give it away. It kills them to dump crops and euthanize livestock. Please don't blame the farmers, they work very hard!
I imagine it has to do with the supply chain and contracts. Farmers often are bound by contract to produce a certain amount as part of their contract with the distributors. Unless that distributors releases the farmer from his contract, the farmer cannot simply give it away to someone else. The distributors on their end might be unable to store all the produce in warehouses because these are scaled on the basis that they already have a buyer for their products and that the products can be quickly loaded on to trucks. This is a problem with the modern just-in-time economy. Probably the only way you can really deal with this is if the state or federal government steps in as a large-scale customer for the distributors. This requires state or federal government to be willing to step in, and to have a plan for how to administrate it. So it is a political problem that there is political resistance to solve. You would need an architect like FDR to be able to pull it off.
