The Story Of Phil | Forever Missed Always Loved

It has been 1 month since we lost our boy. They say time is a healer but really all it does is soften the blow. Whilst we are honoured to have the opportunity to have shared his life with you all and can never take from the positive impact it has had on so so many, it times like this you wish you could escape from it. Having to share our grief with the world draws up raw emotion again and feels like starting over. That being said, the true reality and impact that a solitude dog has is apparent in all your thoughts prayers and well wishes and we thank you all for your support. Phil was definitely unique in many qualities you've all recognised. He was a human in dog form, so emotional. He spread happiness wherever he went despite his own troubles. He grew more and more a fan base as the years went on and he did himself and us as his family proud. He was a happy boy, a good boy, the goodest in fact and in his time of slumber he remained that way.
Degenerative mylepothy was diagnosed only by process of elimination. There is no test for it here in the UK it's too invasive. Phil wasn't in pain from it. What I've tried to get across in the video is that though this was degenarative, we were never pointed in this direction or hinted of a possibility or even had knowledge of the same. As such it went amiss with arthritis and old age which is typical of the condition. Phil had collapsed, his rear legs were unresponsive and whilst shane managed to effectively wheelbarrow him to go to the toilet he refused as of course the position umcomfortable. Swapping hand to support him under his stomach he wouldn't go either due to the pressure. Phil went to the toilet 10x more than the others, he would drink a litre then go to the toilet for a long time on account of cushings, he had no schedule despite being fed the same time every day it wasn't something we could control. The next morning his front legs had gone too, he wouldn't bear any weight at all. Shane hoisted him by wrapping two pairs of trousers under his hips and front legs to try and lift him to the grass. He wouldn't go and by this time he would have normally gone to the toilet 3 or 4 times. Phil was a big dog, he weighed a lot and there was no feasable way to determine when he wanted to drink or go to the toilet let alone help him. Wheelchairs were out of the question as he had no use of legs. At the vets a long way away they tried to express bladder and couldn't, a catheter was the only way and it could stay for a maximum 5 days. We couldn't do anything Phil was crying from discomfort not pain. He refused to go to the toilet lay down in his own bed too proud, as ever all he wanted to do was be a good boy.
We held him, thanked him, talked to him, told him we loved him and that we were proud of him and watched him go to sleep as we continued to praise him.
Unity Until we meet again Phil, you'll always be in our hearts, rest easy. x

Our pets are lucky because we CAN make that decision to allow them to leave us pain free and with dignity. You did your best and tried everything. Phil had the BEST family ever. Don’t beat yourselves up.

Grieve as long as you need, don’t respond to comments as it’ll make it all so much harder & maybe don’t even read them till much further down the road. Know we all loved Phil & know you did everything & more for him. My heart goes out to you guys. Years ago my dog woke up w/his legs not working & we too had to make the difficult decision. Thoughts & prayers are with you guys. And commenters, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything. Give these guys space.

  • Emma, please don't second guess anything you did for the last few months of Phil's life. You were a stellar mum to Phil. You did the right thing by deciding on quality of life. Between June , and June of 1983, my dad, mom and 19 y/o sister passed. Things were so chaotic and I never took time to grieve. But, once I had my first dog, I somehow knew things would be different. I was obsessed with him. As a single, full-time working mom, my free time was totally absorbed with my child and youngest sister, but my Nikko was my heart's delight. And, there have been a total of seven who have been called home by their Creator. Dwelling too much on their losses, causes me to sob. So, I try to re.ind myself that we will all be together someday . Just as you will be with Phil!❤❤❤❤

  • I have been waiting for this. Don't bury him because if you move, unless you intend to dig him up, you will leave him behind. Have a look at gone to the snow dogs, they have lost 3 dogs and Jess has their ashes in urns so that if they move, their dogs go with them.

I will never forget Philly Bear, he was so special and so loved. Best dog in the world. ETA: Okay, I started crying when you talked about Teddy stepping into Phil's spot as the howler. Each time they have passed, it had a profound impact on the dogs. Our deepest condolences, love to all the pups and cats. God speed, Phil rest easy

  • Phil was your first dog when you moved in together. Isn't it? Indeed, he went through all these years with you, participated in all the important events in your life, gave you his love and kindness, and was your faithful friend. It’s very hard when everything around reminds you of him. You’ve lived so much together with Phil. My cat Peach died 18 years ago, and every time I look at his portrait, I remember so many joyful days and one of the hardest ones when my beloved cat passed away. Dear Matthews, hold on! From heaven Phil will be always happy for his mom and dad, sisters and brothers whom he loved so much. RIP old boy, love you 🩶

  • My first memory of Phil was the video you did of him called Giant Dog Refusing To Take Bath. Watching Phil trying trying to outsmart Shane to avoid that bath was what endeared me to him. Phil was so big, fluffy, beautiful, and full of personality that I had to keep watching. Years later, when I saw the thumb of that video...When Tomorrow Starts Without Me, I cried with you and prayed blessings for your family because I felt and understood your grief. I'm sure you know that you are blessed to have such a wonderful family, including all these amazing animals. People will come and go, and they do change up on you over time... But, your dog is always happy to see you, always by your side, always on your side. Sad, but that's not a statement one can make about most people one knows. Thyroid disease and inherited polyneuropathy are very common in Phil's breed. The first condition is treatable, but the second one is not. Sadly, unethical veterinarians all know this, but they will keep taking your money and misdirecting you anyway. Long ago, when you first mentioned Phil's symptoms I tried to post this but there were always so many comments on your videos that mine probably got buried. All dog breeds have certain health susceptibilities especially once they get past a certain age. You did the right thing to avoid putting Phil under anesthesia for high-risk surgical procedures. These are expensive and guarantee nothing. If it ever comes down to quality of life issues from old age and/or disease, the right and ethical choice is always to show them love and allow them to enter peacefully into rest without suffering. There are no words that will make you feel better about losing Phil, and time won't make the memory of him fade away. Some things are simply forever. You gave Phil an amazing life, and he knew it. You were a part of him, and he is always going to be a part of you. Some people never get to experience love and affection at this level. It is a beautiful thing!

    • What lovely words. I lost my first dog, a gorgeous fawn chow chow aged only 6 to stomach cancer. She died just 3 months after my mum died when I was 16. It was unbelievably heartbreaking. I always wanted another chow but I worked strange hours, often had to travel and couldn't rely on anyone else to look after it in the daytime. 45 years later, now retired, I've adopted a mini cavapoo and she has got my heart. She has alot of health issues being born without a tail, a malformed spine amongst them but she is on good pain meds. She is just the friendliest little dog, always greets humans like they are her best friends, she is a joy to be with. She is not just a dog to me but my little companion, my loyal friend. I swear she can understand everything I say to her, even my mates say she is like a mini me in a furry body😂. I loved watching Phil and his family during the dark days of covid and bingewatched as many episodes as I could. Don't have as much time nowadays having my own little fluff so try and catch up when I can. To me dogs are an important part of my life and if anyone doesn't want to see me because of her then unfortunately for them, she will always take priority.
