My boss has one in his office, and I tried it out, and I asked him where he bought it. He told me Costco. I was actually quite surprised at that, and how comfy the chair was initially. I didn't spend much time on it, but it was pretty comfortable nonetheless.

Instructions unclear, I told my wife she was like a chair and now I'm in trouble.
And you have "another chair on the side just to ride on the weekends" xD

Yea, I can't believe he went there. In the US, it would be Cancel Culture time. Or Feminist would be calling you all kinds of vulgar names. Great review. Very to the point. But I would expect that from a programmer. ;-)
I mistook your wife for a chair.
I especially liked that you thought about the fact that people don't always sit correctly! I've been toying with getting an areon but I very often sit improperly and thus made me reconsider. It's a shame that staples are an online only store in the UK now a days, I'd certainly like to try their chairs out!
That part of the review seemed obnoxious to me. Firstly he complained about the embody being too big when in fact it's design lends itself quite well to sitting cross-legged. Additionally, people normally want to spend this kind of money to help fix their posture and reduce the risk of injury. This means that you would expect the individual to want to sit properly... Another key point is that these chairs have a 12 year warranty so having them break shouldn't be a huge concern. I don't know man, get a beanbag if you want to sit like a potato.
@@ren137c you bought one didn’t you

Finally, someone cares if a chair is comfy when sitting crosslegged. No wonder why you are the TechLead.
For real though! I was like, yep, he answered everything I could possibly want to know. Glad he came down to our lvl.
Yep. Not being able to cross your legs might be a dealbreaker, especially for something as expensive as an Aeron. Always read that the lip of the chair hurts but I have yet to try the chair to see if it's as bad as they say. Might go for a Leap or Embody if Aeron really doesn't like weird sitting positions.
@@math001 Yeah, the Leap was looking like the winner for me, especially since I don’t have slouch and slide issues, and you can add a headrest to a Leap. Other considerations paragraph. Hyken may merit more research, nice price for what you get. Hyken might wear out as fast as the Costco chair though, so a $400-500 used Aeron might be the long term better investment. With that 12 year warranty, HM expects it to last a long time, and if a $100 mesh repair gives you ANOTHER 12 years... well, buy once, cry once. Leap might also be repairable, also has incredible durability and healthy used market. I haven’t missed sitting cross-legged in my racer seat gaming chair (I think I’m growing out of it, honest!), but I think I really would like a footrest or ottoman to rest my legs on.
Doing a lot of research on chairs for my home office, almost every YT reviewer mentions about cross-legged sitting. The Embody is supposed to be quite good for that though.
@@chrischen5048 I have embody and I sit cross legged in it all the time
Truly the best chair review videos out there. straight to the point and gives viable examples for each pro/con every chair has. I recently bought the "costco" chair after seeing and sitting on it on a friend's house. I had no idea it actually had a following and I'm glad it happened to be featured on this video amongst the best/most expensive chairs out there. Truly for the price you can't go wrong. In my university (when we used to attend to school) we had the Herman Miller Aeron on various places at campus. You can feel its an expensive chair, the confort and the quality is there, but if you compare it directly to the costco chair for confort its fairly similar. Besides not having lumbar support, honestly the quality is pretty good for the price. great video!
This is the most useful video I’ve ever seen, thank you. I have an Aeron at the office which I love but was looking for another chair for the home office. Been strongly considering getting another Aeron but I may just give the Hyken a try!

I also found the humor to be very funny x3 and im sure those programmers in need can figure out something to sit on now because of you. God bless you have a great new year!
So glad you mentioned sitting crosslegged! I spend a good 75% of my work time sitting crosslegged, and it's hard to find a chair that's comfortable to sit in that way, but everyone I mention that issue to just says "well just stop sitting that way". Definitely getting the Hyken after seeing this review.
Same for me, but that's like wanting a chair that allows you to be confortable while smoking. :-)

As an ergonomic specialist of over 10 years I love the comment about wanting a chair that will let me do the wrong thing. It’s a combination of the right chair and the right habits, but your bad habit of crossing your legs will damage your spine and hips. I really love it when people tell me yes I know but I’m still going to do it. It reminds me of when I was tired of my child trying to touch a burning candle. Eventually I said go ahead see what happens.

The real question: Which coffee is best for Programmers?
I actually recommend a coffee here www.amazon.com/shop/techlead my favorite one

I bought 2 Staples Hyken chairs 6 years ago when it was on sale for $99 each. One for me and one for my son. We both love it. They still look brand new after 6 years of daily use. It is a rare exception of "you get what you pay for".
Great overview. Advice for University students: Get the best chair possible and spare no cost as it will lead to orthopedic issues when you are older. As someone who has many decades of higher learning, I can speak to having a decent and orthopedically correct chair, Ravi Peiris M.D.
Amen! I"m out there hunting for the most supportive chair because I have lower back issues now and it SUCKS! 😥
As someone who recently finished university and who now has chronic backpain, I wish I took advise like this more seriously. Between classes and studying (not to mention recreational time watching shows/gaming), I probably spent up to 8 hours a day sitting while in school. Now I'm paying the price for that.

I’ve had the Staples Hyken for well over 8 years now. Although material quality feels on a cheaper side, it still looks like new. Only thing I replaced were the wheels for rubberized ones. And yes I am getting a 2nd chair to spice things up 😂 but Hyken is a solid choice if you’re on a budget and want a great chair!
Step one: spend a day researching the market for a good chair Step two: find the perfect chair, put it into shopping cart Step three: hesitate to order and see that chair out of stock Step four: research for the second best fit Step five: buy it Step six: get this video recommended at 3AM Ffs
Literally every purchase I make- days or weeks of research, weighing out compromises, changing budget, watching reviews, cross referencing reviews so on and so fourth. If I was paid to do product research and testing I would be a rich man.

Surprisingly entertained from a video reviewng office chairs. Couldn't help but laugh when you were sliding off the embody. Awesome video
@TechLead 4:45 For the HM Embody, you need to lift the arms when moving them in and out for it to not be so difficult. Lifting them “unlocks” them for smooth movement. Kind of like when you have to push down on an RX bottle to open it...Same way lift the arms and move them in and out! Thank me later :)
Great video. Love real world reviews that nail real world issues with chair usage. Aeron is still the best for me though (and you can an Atlas headrest for it).
Thanks for the review of the chairs. I moved from California to Tennessee last August, and needed a new chair. I purchased the FlexFit Hyken Mesh Task Chair, and have enjoyed very much. The Tech Lead, you absolutely nailed it in this video. I'm so glad you mentioned the inability to sit cross-legged in the Herman Miller Aeron. That's always been my criticism of the chair as well. I might actually buy the Staples chair based on your review.
In fact, I'm sitting cross-legged now on the Hyken.
I thought no one would ever take that into consideration... Enforcing good posture is one thing but enabling different positions with ease is top notch
@@icarolfmuniz the thing is, sitting cross-legged is supposed to be very bad posture. Nevermind, I thought it was the other type of cross-legged. You should only sit cross-legged like you mean in flat surfaces.
I have a Herman Miller Mirra at home, which I can sit cross-legged on quite easily. Trying to sit on the office Aeron cross-legged was quite restrictive. 12 years on, the Mirra still looks and functions without any problems - a testament to the build quality.
@@fusioned Mirra vs Aeron what are the differences and which one would you recommend?
I bought the hyken after this review. I really like it! You were spot on about sitting cross legged on it! The cons are that you can't get the arm rests completely out of the way, the wheels included are not good for hardwood. I bought the replacement hardwood wheels online but it raised it up an inch. I'm 5'9" and the lowest setting on the chair was right where it needed to be. There is a gas valve online that is an inch shorter but I'm not sure if I'm going to buy it or not. On the pro side when the back locks it locks straight. No flex.
I own the Hyken and it is a good chair. It is comfortable, especially after long hours of sitting on it. My biggest issue is that it isn't very durable. Granted I have owned it for a while now, but I had a much cheaper chair before and it last much much longer.
Had my Steelcase Leap V2 chair at work for about 14 years. It was around $800 when I looked it up at after getting it from our manager. I will say it basically looks the same as when I got it other than some coffee stains. The thing is super durable. I wouldn't worry about breaking that Gesture chair just because it is expensive. The materials used are really durable.
I had one of those and absolutely hated it. If you can't adjust the angle of the seat, the chair is garbage.

To be honest you don’t need a good chair though you can get a really cheap chair and sit with good posture

@@AlenBerberovic same here including inversion table. bottom line take care of your spine
My doc said no backrest is the best chair presuming you will keep a correct posture all the time which is hard. Also, you should make physique exercises 10 mins at every hour.
Not really chair. It’s your own posture and not strengthening the back.
Yes!! All these reviews talk about the ergonomics and material, but I'm glad you incorporated the need to sit cross legged. At home I sit in all kinds of weird positions and some office chairs are terrible for that.
Great review! Have you reviewed gaming chairs beside the Herman Miller? Do you still like the Hyken? Thanks!
Nice comparison. As a Hyken chair owner, I can say that it is a good chair for what it costs. To me, the standing features of the chair are the headrest and the locking mechanism for the backrest tilt. However, there is a couple of things I wish were different: first being the support and contour in the backrest are meant for slightly or fully reclined position and not well suited for sitting upright as there is a significant gap between the backrest and the curvature of my back; and second, the armrests can benefit a lot from better adjustability, they just go up and down (and they don't get low enough to my liking), adding forward and backward adjustments will hugely improve the chair ergonomics, without this I'm never comfortably close enough to my desk (which is a standing desk with plenty of height adjustability). As a consequence, I can never achieve optimal productivity sitting position with the Hyken chair. For reference, I'm 1.76 m tall and weight about 74 kg. So, the Hyken chair is good for relaxing or working if you favor reclined sitting posture, not so good if you like to sit upright with the keyboard close to elbow level. I hope this helps.
You are an absolute legend, so many reviewers fail to check whether u can set cross-legged or not. You've helped me pick the Hyken for my home work setup :)

That weekend fun comment genuinely made me laugh. I bought the Komene ErgoPro, which is basically the same as the Staples and Costco chair, and my only gripe with it is that I slide off. It was also starting to be uncomfortable on the bottom so I put a cushion on it which fixed the sliding. I also added high quality rubber casters and thick armrest cushions and I keep the tilt adjustment almost tight so it keeps me upright but still has just a bit of give. I eventually want to try the Steelcase Gesture for that depth adjustment which is what my chair really needs.
Amazing video just what I was looking for and surprising and amazing result indeed, thanks for the video!

Office designer here-price really matters for long term life of a chair and adjustments it has. I’d say, most over $250 are the same comfort quality. Every person likes totally different seat cushions-that’s really a personal preference thing.

Thanks for the reviews. I've been using a Herman Miller Aeron B chair for 20 years now.
Probably the best reviewer I've seen on this so far. You were SPOT ON with how hard the Autonimous cushions are. I have one and I regret buying it.
My experience about the expensive "meme" chairs, I found one Steelcase that someone threw away. Outside the consumables, and some squeaking, the chair was good. The chair was marked as a refurbish on the bottom, refurbished around 2004 IIRC (don't remember the exact date) model not even listed on their website anymore. I sat on the damn chair, not even adding new cushion, nor anything like that, and it was, hands down, the best chair I've ever used, period. It was easy to sit down, stay a bunch of hours on the bloody thing and get up better feeling than I was when I sat down. I mostly stopped shuffling my posture on the chair as it was mostly triggered by the discomfort that you don't even notice day to day. If you do have the chance to test try a good chair, from a reputable manufacturer, do it. It is worth finding which ergonomic chair is for you and spending that premium. The best chair is the one that you don't feel it, both after a long session, and changing your (naturally) bad posture to a good one.
Just sitting here; watching in a Hyken Task chair, and feeling happy about my purchase. I've had the chair for over a year now, and it's still just as comfortable as day one. My friend has had one since 2017 and it feels exactly the same as mine does currently. My use: 2-8 hrs/week. My friends use: 2-8 hrs/day.
How the lumbar support on it feel? Thinking of buying this chair and I got some lower back issues so wondering if its comfy?
The issue with these cheap chair is they don’t last as much as those expensive one ,those expensive one can last well over 20-30 years ,I know someone who still has the hammer milller aeron chair since 1995 ,and it still work completely fine .
Lol great video, loved that you mentioned sitting cross-legged cuz I was hoping for that. But no one’s gonna talk about the joke at the ending 😂

Did you purchase second hand? Would they honour the warranty the same if I purchase second hand
@@tommyhoang6736 yes I purchased 2nd hand an HM honors the warranty still.
@@NoPlayJack HM warranty does not transfer. I'm not sure how you are able to still keep using it
@@klct555klct all you have to provide is a photo of the manufacturer’s label. They don’t ask if you were the original purchaser or for proof of purchase. Just call a dealer and they’ll send a repair person.
@@NoPlayJack everytime I have called them, they ask for an order number (proof of purchase). and then they ask for the manufacturers label
