GoPro: Man and Grizzly Bear - Rewriting History

More than a decade ago, Casey Anderson rescued a grizzly bear named Brutus and founded the Montana Grizzly Encounter in order to provide a natural home for other rescued grizzlies. On this Endangered Species Day, their unlikely friendship teaches us the importance of conservation and respect.

    • Most people wouldn't want to just kill a bear. If it was attacking anyone would. Those animals are dangerous. They can't be trusted. I have a friend that an uncle had two children eaten by a grizzly. I wpuld kill a bear in a heart beat if it came after me.

    • @@silkyjohnson4519 I think he means by hunting it not to defend yourself. bears don't taste as good as a deer for example and killing something just for a skin is messed up in my opinion. literally killing a massive animal just for a decoration in your house.

      @zdarc9958@zdarc99583 жыл бұрын
    • @@zdarc9958 Bears can be very tasty or very nasty depending on what they have been eating. Statistics show that in places where hunting bears are banned there are more instances with humans and bears. That might be because there is a larger population of bears but also because the bears over time become bolder and less elusive of humans.

  • “Never forget he is a grizzly bear” this quote instantly made him wiser than most animal rescue/trainers out there. He understands that at heart bears are dominant beasts. But it’s nice to see the gentle side of bears too.

    @quesokid4959@quesokid49593 жыл бұрын
    • You're an idiot if you think any half trained rescue person who deals with large predators doesn't know this. Those who don't won't live very long lives. It's not even about them being 'dominant beasts', or even apex predators - it's sheer size and weight. A bear could be as meek as you please and aim for nothing more than a friendly swat to the back in playful behavior - but it could still snap a grown mans neck like a twig where it would merely jostle another bear of the same size due to their thicker bones and impact absorbing fat + muscle tissue. The bear enthusiast Timothy Treadwell (documented in Werner Herzog's film Grizzly Man) died despite years unscathed working around bears because he came across bears that were starving after a long winter with almost no food - if that happens it doesn't matter how well you respect their size and power, they will still kill you unless you have a lot of backup willing to put the bears down (tranqs on a bear do not work that quickly unless you get them in exactly the right spot).

Had you cared for the dog since he was born the probability of him attacking you are slim, unless he is sick.

It could have been hurt in a certain way, got some type of disease like rabies, you might wanna get that checked out. Also, you’re point is invalid. Dogs don’t do that unless there’s something wrong.

  • There's a very big difference between running a rescue operation for "damaged" bears, a difference between that and some dummy going into the wilds to "befriend" wild creatures. This is the first time I have every heard anyone "in the business" of wildlife speak so eloquently about the true nature of bears. After many years observing bears in the wilds of Alaska, I too understand bears as "gentle souls" -- or as I say "peace-lovers at heart". Excellent piece. Clearly Casey Anderson has it together.

It's unconditional love and never-ending respect. Something most humans lost a long time ago. We ruin and deplete all we touch, then dare to blame mother earth/her animals for what WE HAVE DONE. It's lunacy. For me, I'd rather support, help and be in the company of animals.

We survived because of our ability to learn, unlike other animals that have the advantage of genetic advancement. We haven’t evolved, infact the world has pushed us down, making us weaker. Clearly the world doesn’t like us, but because of our mental development we no longer needed the world’s support. But we still need the world. Truly our real enemy is other types of humans.

    • But again because of our ability to learn we developed the knowledge to understand that alliance is the answer to survive. We found this after the devastation of World War Two it was a nightmare for humans, but it was also the time of our most advancement, the time to understand the other of our kinds. It made us stronger, and understood that we no longer needed war. Of course there are people who are very stupid, and that disappoints me. I speak for the human race.

  • Casey knows the golden rule...when you are paling around with a potentially dangerous wild animal, never, not even for one split second, is the human in control of the situation. The Bear is ALWAYS in control. Brutus knows that, but more importantly, so does Casey. The videos I've seen of Bears attacking their trainers have all occurred from a situation in which the trainer allowed themselves to believe they were actually the ones in charge, and are trying to make the Bear do something they clearly weren't comfortable doing. I truly don't believe Brutus will ever 'turn' on Casey, because Casey would never be stupid enough to try to assert control over him. I mean honestly, how stupid would a person have to be to think they could actually boss around a Grizzly Bear!

    • Nice I live in Australia so we never get to see bears like this. But the kangaroos, the koalas, the kookaburras, the wombats and the land. Some people think it's just outback when I say this. It's the rivers, lakes, mountains and all beautiful places. You just need to be willing to go past the barriers and the tough places that no one is willing to go to. So just think of all of the things that your home country has and think. 'I want to keep it like that'. Their used to be a koala that our family called Kevin in a small place called Korweinguboora. He was friendly but vanished after 5 years. I live in the city of Melbourne but that doesn't stop me from going out with my dad to go places to camp and hike. So yea, that's my story.

    • +TNT Spike We used to get Koalas all the time around my house, would spot them in the trees and their droppings on the driveway. But the increasing housing development around my area has stopped a lot of them returning.

    • I like how people think wild animals are just as valuable as our own species. Your a part of the human race and it is your entire biological purpose to protect and prioritize it. Animals are worthy of life too and should only be hunted for food just as any other predator on Earth would do. Humans are a unique species that has a consciousness driven to reject nature and their own impulses. Humans have the capability to question their own existence and think of themselves as an individual. Each human is so unique that in an individualist perspective should be perceived as valuable despite our numbers. It is easily possible to protect animal rights without giving them the same moral standards as humans. Moral standards must also be met with a reciprocal. Most animals do not have the empathy to return such moral values in a mutual trust. It is our job to limit the damage we do, but our species is still the ultimate byproduct of billions of years of evolution.

    • Merkel's Fourth Reich You’re right in a way but as the smartest species it’s our job to be smart. We can’t just take for granted other species who didn’t evolve as much as we did. For some people we’re not different because of the statistical odds of even being around. Certain bear were granted life, same as certain humans. Let’s not forget that without other creatures, humans wouldn’t survive. Also, just because we can think about something that is almost certainly useless, such as computations or internal thought, they are only important to us. It doesn’t matter in the long run, and doesn’t make us anymore important. They got life and we have taken full advantage of the resources just because we are smarter. Undoubtedly we need to be more mindful and realize we’re sharing the same planet. Not just humans dominating it because we’re smarter.
