Wondering what it's like owning a german shepherd? My wife and I got a german shepherd nearly two years ago. This is a collection of funny / interesting moments over that time. They are great family pets, with lots of zoomies. Very funny dogs. GSD's make for great hiking companions.

This compilation was impromptu recorded over 2 years. We don't get to hike as much with a baby now, but this footage gives insight into what owning a german shepherd is like. I taught Myszka tons of tricks in the first few weeks: sit, lay-down, nose on the ground, roll over, spin, jump, bang along with many other things like patrol the house, find toys, close doors, go on the couch, get off the cough, kiss my hand, give me paw, stay, wait, be gentle (while grabbing an object), speak, and search for somebody, etc. Most of tricks were learned within a few weeks. These dogs require an incredible amount of work daily, it never ends. Seriously. Prepare yourself for a very active dog.
Highly encourage anyone considering a GSD to take an entire MONTH off when first getting the dog, to properly expose the dog to the world (e.g., random people, new places.) It seems months 3-5 are very critical for forming their habits, behavior and views of other dogs / people outside your family.

  • I was raised with a German Shepard. She saved our lives when one night a fire broke out in our house around 3 am and we were all dead asleep. Sakie my Shepard, woke us up howling and barking, she was our hero.

  • We’ve owned 5 German Shepherds over 50 years!! They are fabulous animals!! Our first one went everywhere with my husband when we owned a farm with a woods and fields like you showed. One time, my husband was cutting down a tree, and the tree twisted, and fell on my husband and his truck. Hubby was pinned under part of the trunk of the tree, and Baron our Shepherd, dug him out from under the tree trunk. Hubby cut up the tree, loaded the truck with the dented roof, and brought Baron home, and grilled him his own steak! 🤣. My dog, Zeke and I thoroughly enjoyed your video!! We’ve always enjoyed every one of our beautiful Shepherds!! Enjoy, enjoy!! 💖🥰

  • My wife and I had to put our baby girl to sleep because of jawbone cancer. Horrible day 2 years ago. A part of me died that day. We finally adopted a 6 month old female German Shepherd again. I'm glad we did. Not to replace our first one but to ease out broken hearts and to love an animal dearly as they should be loved. Well, it's been another 8 months or so and I'm glad we did. Every now and again I cry and mourn over our first baby, SHEBA. This one we named Mindy. ❤😂

  • I’m 70 years old now and my 5th German Shepherd is 9. I can’t explain to people who have never been lucky enough to share their lives with one what a complete joy and blessing they are. I can’t imagine my life without my Bucky. I loved each of them totally with my whole heart and soul. I am convinced that all my dogs will be in Heaven with me. I never want to be without a German Shepherd sharing my life. I hope that will be true. I can’t run like I used to but I can throw the stick and I have over 7 acres so I hope that will all be enough. And I still ride my Arabian and she can run 35 miles an hour so I don’t need to be able to run myself. I just need to hang on to her!

    • I share your feelings. The title ought to be "What It's Like BEING OWNED by a German Shepherd". Each day MUST be full of joy till we live: this is what he has taught me-and not too silently, mind you. 13 years have passed with my most recent GS. I lost my younger brother in 2018, and my mother (gracefully from old age), and my sister (damn the Wuhan virus, China) this year (2021). I'm 62 and my GS is 13. HAS HE ALLOWED ME TO CRY OR EVEN SIT IN A DARK ROOM TO CONTEMPLATE ABOUT LIFE AND DEATH? NO SIR. Each day MUST be full of joy till we live: this is what he has taught me-and not too silently, mind you. He makes all kinds of noises the moment he 'thinks' I'm feeling down and takes ME out for a long walk. He would NOT desist or rest until he KNOWS that clouds of the gloom have been dispelled from me by him. .. LOVE FROM INDIA 😍

    • We put our shepherd down last June. It was rough as it was my son’s first dog. The dog was 18 months and he was 11 months when we got her, so he’s had a dog for as long as he’s had a memory. The shepherd just turned 11 when we had to let her go. To add insult to injury, our black lab boxer mix had to be put down this February. We will get more dogs because we love them. You will always have a special place in your heart for dogs that pass, but don’t deny another dog a loving home because you’re afraid to love again.

They are best buddies, and we love to watch them play out in the yard. For Christmas, he got a new squeaky toy, and another good bone to spend the evening chewing on. He is a GREAT addition to our family. I raised GSD's years ago, and was raised with GSD's. NOTHING beats a good dog, regardless of breed. A good dog is a good dog, and a life-long companion. They will love you, no matter what. They ALWAYS want your approval, they ALWAYS want to make you happy, and loved. For those that wish dogs harm... it will not go well, if we meet, and the end result will leave you very unhappy. If you give my post a thumb down, please leave a reply, so I can see who you are.

  • I must say this is one of my favorite dog videos on youtube. You capture the simple joys and hilariousness of having a dog, especially a german shepard. I really enjoyed this. It felt realistic and full of your own happiness as well. Never felt like you were staging anything, or filming because you want to monetize your dog, which I am really put off by in many other channels. I loved my GS dog and she has passed away now. Watching your gorgeous dog zoom through the puddles as you laugh, her fear of the laundry basket, took me back to that great experience in my life. Thanks for doing that. If you make more videos, please keep them fresh and chill like this. Thank you for making it.

    • Thank you for the kind words. These candid videos were taken over 1-2 years and I compiled them for our own sake. I never really expected the video to be this popular. Your comment made my day when I first read it, and it's funny how owning a GSD is like a secret club. When ours was a puppy people in our neighborhood would stop their car to pet her. They would tell us about their GSD, etc. They are quirky, funny and obviously challenging dogs (due to the exercise needed) but it's rewarding once they've settled in a little bit. Anyways, we got our GSD as a family dog; I agree that way too many people on KZhead are trying to monetize their dogs, it's definitely off-putting. Thanks again for your comment.

  • German Shepherd's are the best dog breed in the world. I'm bias my beautiful female rescued German shepherd just turned 3 last week. I have had her since Easter 2020. With a lot of patience she now walks on a loose lead unless she sees some birds or another dog. She is a beautiful dog and I renamed her Rosie as I hope living with me her future will always be Rosy and she knows she is safe and loved in our house.

    • Haha nice, my dog is just a little over 3 years now. If I were to do it again, I think I would rescue an older GSD because the first few years of nonstop exercise are so crazy. The off-leash thing is difficult when other dogs are around, good luck with all that!

  • Thank you for posting this lovely video! I lost my best girl, Tess, in June at the age of 13 from cancer of the spleen (apparently not uncommon in older GSD). She was euthanized and it broke my heart; she's always in my thoughts and I miss her terribly. I had other breeds whilst growing up but there is something about the loyalty, devotion and intelligence of a GSD that is very special. She was my shadow and best friend, following me everywhere; if I was out of her sight for a few minutes, she'd come looking for me. On the few occasions when I was unwell, she would position herself at the end of my bed, leaving me only to eat, etc. - the longest period was for two weeks when I had the flu. We are so very fortunate to experience that level of unconditional love, devotion and loyalty 💔💔💔

  • Ive had shepherds since i was a baby. She even saved me from being(in her eyes) kidnapped. When i moved out of home i was without shepherds for years. My partner wasnt keen on owning one. It took about 20 years until he came to. Now, we have 3 and he NOW agrees they are the best dogs. I believe that anyone who hasnt had the honour of being in contact with one is missing out on a true treasure. Not only are they the best dogs, they are one of(if not THE) best animal. Loyal, playful, freindly, protective, loving, to those who are too afraid to get close to one due to the stigma around them, get over it. Its so worth it. Having said all that, at the end of the day, its up to their owners to raise them properly. Same as people with their children. You raise them wrong, youll have problems, and its not the dogs fault, its the 'owners' fault. Keep your "Labradoodle" and "Cavoodles" and all other 'designer dogs'(READ MUTTS/MIXED BREEDS/HALF BREEDS etc). Shepherds are perfect and pure. They cant be improved, theyre already perfect as is. Truly awesome in every sense of the word. 🐾🐺♑

  • Very beautiful montage of your puppy! You both done good, and yet you re correct, German Shepherds require lots of daily running and exercise because they are high energy dogs. I been an owner of German Shepherds for decades, and highly motivated and intelligent! Yes, they need the right training right when you first get your pup. I lived in Minnesota and t the border. They wolves, and bears would come to my house, and is dangerous, because they lure the dog into the woods to kill them. I got lucky twice because she came back quickly. I now live in the Interior Alaska, and moose, and bears are her new predators, which most of us up here carry & have bear spray. We walked up to the base of these mountains and her body language tells you otherwise, and she is on a leash going on the sled dog trails. Every German Shepherds I ever owned been the best gaurd dog, and companion. Thank you for sharing your dogs experiance for those ever thinking on getting one or two!

    • GSD'S are the best ever: trainable, loyal, PROTECTIVE, we've had em for 49 years and seen many come and go. Vitamin C will kill viruses. Vitamins C and E are antioxidants that keep your dog alive longer. Dog are supposed to produce 900 mg of C on their own, but my rescue Elena doesn't. Vitamin C saved her life and I give her C when her appetite wanes. I've seen dog fights, and I nor any dog can knock off her feet. Vitamin E for the heart, coat, nails. Louie Louie lived to 17 with just E. Lena is supposed to be 4 and 1/2 but because of E, she no grey hair like a puppy. Vitamin A for anything non-viral. Vitamin A killed my mom's cancer and my dads incurable infection. My dad had a plaque in his office: Physician, heal thyself! He passed at 90. GS dogs are the best dogs ever.

I don't mean to be "that guy", but I will ask you to really consider properly securing your beautiful pup when you are in your car. My brother-in-law was an EMT and he straightened me out. Some of the stories he told me about car accident scenes he's seen would give you nightmares. • @SA spinks Tell your husband it'll be ok and that he WILL get to a point where he can do it again. I lost my first GSD when he was 16 years old. I raised him from 8 weeks old. He was the best friend I ever had and I cried like a baby the day we had to put him down. Heartbroken doesn't even scratch the surface. He was just 6 months older than my daughter and when I lost him, it was like what I would imagine losing a child is like. I felt exactly the same as your husband. It took almost four years before I could bring myself to have another dog. She isn't a Shepherd, but she's been with us for 12 years and I love her dearly. Well, she's getting on in years now and it's been near 17 years since my first GSD left me. This past August, I finally got another Shepherd. It was a long time in coming, but I was finally ready and it was so worth the wait as I've been blessed with a beautiful female GSD who's just 9 months old now. I didn't go looking for her, she just sorta fell into my lap. It's almost like she found me. She never leaves my side. She comes to work with me in the morning, sleeps next to my side of the bed at night, and I just love her to death. Now, I went into this knowing what's coming down the road, as I'm in the "been there, done that" club, but every day she reminds me of just how great life is with a GSD and I wouldn't trade her for anything! So just let your husband know that it will get easier as time goes on. The pain will subside and he'll just be left with his own wonderful memories that will one day, when he's ready and the time is right, let him dare get close to another GSD. All the best!!

  • I love my GSD Beyond explanation. If I dare to do it over again the first thing I would do is prioritize socialization consistently. GSDs, are smart, want to be ALPHA, should be taught to know when it’s time to be friendly, and know when to back off and to be protective, They must consistently obey commands immediately, and know when to help. GSDs love attention, love learning new complex commands and mostly human praise and loving contact from there pact. GSDs need to learn gentleness when they are playing because they are powerful strong dogs and can unintentionally hurt their playmates. I’ve seen my male when playing, give one playful push, causing 2 large powerful, bigger dogs to roll 3 times on the one push to both dogs. Not good! This could have caused grave injury if this were a child or an adult. GSDs can be very stubborn and try to get away with any commands taught them but consistence is the key. My dog knows I’m Alpha but I do not instill fear in him to make him obey. You don’t need to be feared by them to obey, because I have found ignoring bad behavior by taking away my attention and placing them away from reacting with the pact is a much more powerful and useful tool to keeping them in line. Other things I would do may sound stupid but I hate stepping in shit so I would teach them to poop in one area. Another thing that is extremely important is grooming them when they are very young. A dog is a dog and will fight and protect themselves even from their owners which is a great thing with all the abuse going on out there. When they are puppies wether they need grooming or not they are at a ripe age to learn to accept gentle grooming as normal. If they need their nails cut or any other grooming it is much easier to teach a small puppy you are not out to hurt them. When they are a small 10 pound puppy and not a 100 pound super strong adolescent the danger is negligible, in comparison. Grooming them should create a calming, luxury, and no danger to you. Also routine is important to these highly intelligent GSDs. It gives them a feeling of safety, comfort, and calm in their world. I am old but have a sixth sense about the GSD, but I also know each dog has his own personality and I may or may not be compatible. My education and their education must be based on compatibility, love, patience and a lot of forgiveness on both sides. They must respect the pact and be respected by the pact. The GSD is a definite gift from our Glorious King and if we want, and can physically handle, we should accept and give as much help we can handle. I have fulfilled the many gaps in my life with these companions and I have have willingly created a more powerful role, and purposely peaceful life. Thank you and God bless

  • I had a German Shepherd called Sasha. She was a Velcro dog and we adored her heart and soul. They are loyal, loving, goofballs. The best. These days I have small dogs, but I'll never forget my Sasha.

  • What a wonderful tree pole collector, big sister and water shepherd. 💕😊 German Sheperds can be a handful, but they can also melt stones with their playfulness and charming personality.

    • @evangelinewandering9547, I've never had a GS but my goodness some of them seem so tempermental and yet playful and silly! @1:22, it was hilarious charging out of the water, I imagined that guy that does the "pet voice-overs" of saying "HELLLP MAMA, THAT FISH BIT MY TONGUE!!"🤣I'm glad this family is having so much fun together with their fur-babies & Aaron is a cute lil guy! ^_^

    • @@zenithperigee7442The temperament is PURELY because people don't realize that genetics matter. GSDs are working dogs by nature, and pair that with a working line shepherd, you will definitely have problems if you are wanting on as a "family pet". Simply speaking, they are not good for families IF you are not working them. They need a job, and are not a golden retriever. Everyone thinks that dogs are the exact same, except for looks. GSDs were bred for herding and protecting. That behavior she shows with cows is the herding instinct, without the proper training to preform correctly.

  • We had this EXACT GSD when I was 7 or 8 yrs old, literally almost a carbon copy. Her name was Ursula, she had 9 puppies, we kept 3 of them (2 boys and a girl). Ursula didn’t like the girl and almost killed her so we gave the female pup to family friends. We kept the 2 sons, Hercules (Curly) and Alexander (Alex). They passed away when I was in college 20+ yrs ago. They still visit me in my dreams…

  • Our family dog was almost completely worn out after 14 years, growing up with our 2 daughters. When Misha starts to get older and needs to slow down you will have beautiful videos of her as a frisky young dog. The time goes by so fast. Thanks for sharing this beautiful video. It brings back memories...🍃🍂

  • 11:56 night vision on! Anyway with her seeing those cattle, her shepherd herding instincts kicked in. …this video definitely shows how intelligent and aware German shepherds are!

  • What a beautiful girl! I can see that she is well-loved. 🥰 Hands down, GSDs are the best breed in the entire world. You'll never find a more amazingly loyal & loving companion. Even though you'll miss bathroom privacy 😂, savor every moment. We lost our 13 yr old GSD in November 2019 and not one day has gone by that I don't think of him. (RIP, my sweet Anakin! 💖) Still, we're blessed beyond measure with our 4-year-old male and the recent addition of a solid black female puppy! Jealous that your Myszka loves the water. Our male won't go near it, but we're going to work with our female. Thanks for sharing!

  • I love Germans, one of my favorite dog breeds, but they require a great deal of training, loads of exercise and a firm leadership.

  • Thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful time period. GSD’s are the best dogs ever. Aaron is going to have a great companion. Our grandson had his best friend too. His name was Hector and was the most loving and protective GSD. If you wanted to find our grandson, you just had to look for Hector. He was always at his side. Hector’s been gone 5 years and even though we got another GSD, Raven, we still miss him every day.

  • We lost our beautiful German Shepherd Koda on October 11th of this year. He was only eight years old but are so grateful to have had him in our lives for those eight years. Watching Mischa with all her energy and her gentle ways reminded me so much of Koda. German Shepherds are the best. They have a way of communicating with us that other breeds can't do.

  • I’ve never had a shepherd myself, but my Mama and Papa had one that saved my life. I was about 4 and started drowning in the swimming pool at their house, so Lady (the shepherd) dove into the water and pulled me to safety. Great dog.

  • Our GSD (Klaus) is the most beautiful boy. I have grown up with German Shepherds and we had 11 of them at one point. Klausy (I call him the Hooligan) is now 8 years old and he loves hugs and welcomes our pool maintenance man (who bribes him with snacks). Super intelligent, super affectionate, super in need of experienced owners who know how to be relaxed, calm and in tune with their dog.

  • So refreshing to hear about how you socialized her from day one. She's really exceptional - High-energy, high play-drive, has a beautiful temperament, and could probably track, search & rescue. I'm glad at my age that my current furry roommates are low-energy GSDs! Four ball tosses and they're ready to watch some TV. Congrats on raising baby and puppy to be pals! She'll be Aaron's guardian for the rest of her life.
