After keeping an elbow shaped piece of Oak for 11 years I finally figured out what it should look like. And Elbow! So I kept it pretty much looking that way and happy I did.
Be sure and let me know what you think.

Thank you Gary. Now if we can get Phil to make one of my Illusions I will be proud as well. Take care, Gary
That's one lovely elbow. It will look great decorating an empty corner with flowers in it.
Thank you Judith and that is a good idea. Lets wait and see where my wife puts it. Gary
That is one that Phil would like Gary. Love it!
Thank you Laura, I hope he does. Thanks for watching, Gary
Nice job. That’s what I like about woodturning. You start with a piece of wood not knowing what you’ll end up with. Sometimes it just a pile of shavings. 👍
This is true. Reminds me of a joke. One wood worker says: Sometimes I make something nice..most of the time I make sawdust! Thanks for watching, Gary
It is pretty good! Keeping the elbow design was definitely a win.
Thanks so much Vincent. Just felt a need to keep the elbow look and happy I did. Thanks for watching, Gary
Glad you kept the bark on. Really looks great
Thank you Earl. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching, Gary
it turned out better than i thought it would ,great job gary
Thank you Don. I feel the same way. Was not sure this was going to work but wanted to try. Thanks for watching. Gary
It's so cool to have a bowl made out of wood from your own property. This Oak is well aged, just like it's turner! LOL! I'm glad you turned it, as is. I agree with you, to see it now as you have seen it for the past 11 years is really neat, only now, it's all shined up just like it was on it's best day overlooking your house. Great memories, great shiny new bowl! Great job, my friend! Keep'em coming! 😊 Phil
Thank you very much Phil. If the darn thing had not started lifting our driveway it may still be there. But it also makes it easier to back in our home away from home as well. It was such an odd piece to pick up and look at. Funny thing is this is what I have always wanted to. I was just afraid of it getting all messed up looking. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
Nice job Gary, love the original shape and bark, always good to turn a piece from your own property. Thanks for sharing. All the best to you. Regards Jim
The Oak grain stands out well in this piece sometimes leaving so much bark really works as with this one, like Phil you kept the nature with the elbow.
Thanks so much Lewis. It is so hard to decided how much bark to leave and how much shape to cut away to have less. Something kept telling OK STOP NOW! Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary
Very nice Gary. Wood never ceases to amaze me with the beauty inside.
I am with you 100% on that Dave. That is what keeps me doing this. Take care, Gary
Hi Gary, Great job and finish, I like your idea of using coffee grounds and glue to fill voids and holes. You definitely have the gift and vision to get the most out of a challenge! Keep the projects coming!!
Thank you very much Michael. I appreciate you watching and commenting, Gary
Very nice looking elbow bowl. Really love the bark on it. Very well done Gary.
Thank you Scott. I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching, Gary
I HAVE SEVERAL ELBOWS PIECES I HAVE BEEN WONDERING WHAT TO DO WITH THEM, NOW I KNOW THANKS IT IS A BEAUTIFUL PIECE. ENJOY YOUR WORK, TOMMY IN GORDO AL.
Hi Tommy. Happy you enjoy my work. You should have lots of fun now with those elbow pieces you have. Take care, Gary
Gary I have several elbows like that in my garage. I for the life of me couldn't figure out what to do with them. Now I know thanks as always with your weekly videos, because otherwise. I'd just be staring at a piece of wood going. Why are you still here, and why haven't I burned you yet😂. Anywho happy turning my friend. ☺️
Thanks so much Edward. This is what I always wanted to do to this piece. I held off because I was looking for something better in it but could not find it. So and elbow it remains and sure happy I did it this way. Have fun with the ones you have. Gary
@@ThePapa1947 you just never know until you start turning a piece to see it. I'm going to be very busy for a while. Loss of a friend and other different circumstances have been keeping me from my place of healing for the last week. Going to jump back into some work after some time with my family for the weekend. Happy turning my friend ☺️. Ed.
I see you channeled your inner Phil Anderson on this one. Looks nice Gary,
Thank you Stuart. I appreciate you watching and commenting. Take care, Gary
That bowl is both gorgeous, and very unique, Gary. Nicely done, my friend. 👏👏👏 All the best, …..Gord
Thank you very much Gord. I know it was sure fun to turn. Happy you liked it my friend. Take care, Gary
So glad you saved this one.
Thank you very much Chris Take care, Gary
Not the usual Gary style but very interesting piece. You never know where you’ll find those pesky homesteaders. Unique and pretty.
Thank you Claude, for sure it is different but I really wanted to save that shape. It is a bit heavy so I will warn people to not drop it on their toes LOL. Take care, Gary
Beautiful! The grain is exceptional, but then, too, it IS oak, after all. Nicely turned! As for boring grubs, I've had a dedicated microwave in the shop for a few years and use it frequently. Currently, I've got several pieces of infested European birch wood. Paraphrasing now, "I just love the smell of nuked grubs in the morning!" 😂🤪
Thank you Dave. Oak from the ol homestead is hard to beat. After we got a new microwave I was going to keep the old but it was kind of small. So we donated it. I do not use the new one we have in the house. If I know what is good for me I will keep it that way. You love the smell of grubs in the morning LOL That is a good line and I smelled the other stuff many times. I did not love it much though. Take care, Gary
A lovely piece of turning, something to be proud of. Graham UK.
Thanks so much Graham! I appreciate you watching. Take care, Gary
Beautiful live edge elbow bowl, Gary. 👍😊
Thank you Rob. Happy you liked it. Gary
❤❤❤ Your pith has a heart! Beautiful shitoiance!
Thank you very much Kate. I did not notice the heart in there but you are right. Thanks for watching, Gary
Really nice, Gary. Great interpretation of what the wood was saying. Bill
Thank you Bill. I really liked the elbow look it had and only made sense to leave it. Sure happy I did. Take care, Gary
You always bring out the best in the piece. Thanks
Thanks so much Mark and thanks for watching, Gary
Cute and unique bowl and where better to have got the blank than from your own property! Well done and thanks! Cheers Al
Thank you Al, that is what really makes it special. I have turnings from other trees we had taken down such as the Sweet Gum and the Leland Cypress. As well as trimmings from our Maple tree and the Siberian Elm tree. I like them all but this one is pretty cool. Take care, Gary
Beautiful in it's simplicity! I'm glad that you didn't hurt yourself too badly. Take care 🙂 💕
Thank you very much Kristi. I am also glad I did not get hurt. Just had to be careful with my bad shoulder but it all worked out fine. Thanks for watching, Gary
Never would have thought of doing that! Nice! Unique!
Thank you Lawrence and thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful Piece Gary. Love the elbow shape. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Carl and thanks for watching, Gary
You've done it again!
Thanks Josh. I really like this piece but have not figured out where to put it yet. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hi Gary Didn't think I'd like this turning, but the end result was amazing as always.
Thank you very much Jim. I think a lot of people thought the same way. So far only one has hated it and made a well documented reply about what I did wrong. Happy you liked it because I love it. Thanks for watching, Gary
Очень хорошо, как всегда. Спасибо, Гарри !
Большое спасибо, друг мой, я ценю твои комментарии и спасибо за просмотр. Заботиться, Гэри
Thoroughly enjoyed your video, Gary. Lovely job 🌞
Thanks so much Ray and thanks for watching, Gary
It's beautiful Gary and an excellent job turning it I enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thanks so much my friend. I appreciate you watching and commenting. Gary
When you had the raw piece in your hands, I was picturing what I would do with it. My vision was very different but I really like your final product. I’ve often thought if you had 5 pieces of identical wood and you gave one to 5 woodturners, how cool it would be to compare the end results. You have to have the eye of the artist to see what lives within. You sir, are one of those artists. Nice work! 🥸👍👀✅❗️
Thank you very much Joe I appreciate your comments. You are right about seeing 5 different versions. What did you have in mind? As I did have one more option. Thanks again for watching, Gary
Hello Papa that piece of oak tuned out great I really enjoy watching you and your friend Phil Anderson turning wood and trying to leave it in the natural state that it grew in. You never know what kind of beauty lies in a piece of wood ,it gets revealed as it takes shape .Keep up the good work .👍
Thank you very much Henry. It is nice to be able to leave some of the tree when turning. Phil is the master of that. I enjoy all kinds of turnings such as segmented which I like to do now and then. Thanks for watching, Gary
Papa, I was wondering just exactly what you were going to do with your elbow. It came out beautifully and your video put a smile on my face. Thank you. Keep the aspidistra flying! God bless, Paul
Thank you very much Paul and your comment has put a smile on my face as well. God Bless, Gary
HI gary u never stop surprising me its a Beauty.
Thank you Manjit! Take care my friend, Gary
I enjoyed watching this Gary, very well done Sir.
Thank you very much Ken I appreciate you watching. Take care, Gary
I really like the way this turned out. Thank you for sharing another great video.
Thanks so much Richard and thanks for watching, Gary
Very cool piece. I just turned a Red Oak elbow. I wasn't sure how I was going to turn it then one day I walked past it and saw a vase with the elbow as the base. Thanks for sharing!
Very cool Dan! Sounds very interesting looking. Thanks for watching, Gary
That looks great! Lovely work Gary!
Thank you very much and thanks for watching my friend, Gary
I always enjoy your turnings. It’s always something different and I always learn something new.
Thank you very much Bob! Happy you enjoy my videos. Take care, Gary
I love the grain. The bark turned out very nice as well.
Thank you Dana and thanks for watching, Gary
Another lovely and very special piece!
Thank you very much Kathleen I appreciate you watching and commenting. Take care, Gary
You and Mr.Phil always do such a good job. These odd shaped pieces. This one is just adorable to, Never disappoint. Thank you for the good work. ❤
Thank you very much Marge. Happy you liked it because I sure do. Take care, Gary
Very nice. I’ve been holding onto a walnut elbow too. Have had no clue what to do with it. Thanks to you, now I do.
Thank you John! A walnut elbow sounds very cool. Let me know how it goes. Take care, Gary
That took a lot of "elbow" grease.. Looks Great Gary..!
Good one Wilbur😎 I am just happy it did not mess with my elbow joint as it is still on the heal. Take care, Gary
Absolutely gorgeous Gary. Take care my friend. Hwyl, Huw
Thanks so much Huw and thanks for watching my friend, Hwyl, Gary
Great piece Gary! Well done and take care.
Thanks so much. Happy you liked it. Take care, Gary
That turned out really nice. I guess all it took was some elbow grease! 😉
Thank you very much. Yup a little elbow grease will do wonders. Now if I can get some of that in my shoulder joint LOL Thanks for watching, Gary
You took quite a bite out of that bark. It looks great!
Thank you Michael. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching, Gary
Nice looking elbow, Gary! I like that it still looks a lot like the piece it started out as. The bark always looks so nice and rich when it’s finished up-love the live-edge pieces!
Thank you very much Marcia. It was hard for me to even put it on the lathe as I did not want to change the look. I do think there is another smaller elbow piece out under my pole shed. May have to turn it as well. Thanks for watching, Gary
That's a good one! I really do appreciate your sharing the process!
Glad you enjoyed it Anthony and thanks for watching, Gary
Love it... the colour and markings look AWESOME 👌 😁💙
Thanks so much Heather and thanks for watching, Gary
Very nice turning. I like how the shellac makes the bark look. Hopefully your shoulder will get better!
Thanks so much Harry. Shellac is really a good finish for these types of turnings. Shoulder is getting much better thank you. Take care, Gary
That's really cool and very different. Great job, as usual.
Thank you very much Tom. Different it is and was not sure how many would like it. So far looks like it was a good choice. Thanks for watching, Gary
Nice piece Gary! Stay well.
Thanks so much and thanks for watching, Gary
neat little piece Garry . Never know what those pieces we save will be.
Thank you very much Gary. Sure happy I let this be what it wanted to be. Take care, Gary
Nice! I like it - the bark that you save helps me with design considerations!
Thank you Phil. Happy it has helped. I did leave a lot of the bark but it was kind of a trade off and like how it turned out. Take care, Gary
Gary, I do the same thing latch onto odd shaped logs for what I’m not sure. One day I’ll toss them on the lath and see what the wood tells me to make. Nice piece of oak.
Thank you Kevin. It was just time to turn it and if I had not the worms probably would have ate the whole thing LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary, that is a great piece. The finish is excellent and I like the slender base. That might've been because of that little survivor, or not, but I like the bottom of the form. Be well.
Thank you very much Jay. I was very happy with how it turned out as well. Bugs are all gone. Thanks for watching, Gary
that is really nice pretty colors with that grain!! God's work.......Larry from calf.
Thanks you Dee. Yes it is and some of his best. Thanks for watching, Gary
Pretty cool, with the 💜 shape pith area, you call it you heart bowl!!😊, i too like the bark left on it. At first it looked scary to watch you start with weird chunky shape, but it came out beautiful. I thought it would cause some Rough bumps with your knife, spinning like that.
Thank you Steve. Yes that pith added a special treat to it. It actually turned pretty easy which is a good thing. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very nice Gary. Great finish ...thank you for sharing the tip on how to remove the last bit of the nib:):) No fly off`s the lathe:):) Take care Yiannis
Thank you very much Yiannis! Take care, Gary
I really like this one, Gary! It lent itself to keeping a good portion of the natural edge & bark, which gave it a nice rustic look and feel. Well done. 👍
Many thanks my friend. It was sure a lot of fun to be able to keep most of the original look. I think that is why I waited so long to turn it because I just liked looking at it the way it was. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very nice piece, Gary. The grain looks like what I get from Liveoak. Really cool!
Thank you Billy. I wonder how many kinds of oak there are. And I wonder if we end up calling some of them different names. Take care, Gary
Very cool piece. Nice finished product.
Thank you very much Joey. Take care, Gary
Very cool Gary!
Thank you Clayton I appreciate you watching. Gary
Thank You Gary.... OAK!!!... yea I love Oak !!! Waking up with my very STRONG Turkish Coffee and the sound of your chisel (what could be better 😊) ... Quite a substantial chunk of Oak and a very attractive turning ( I like the bark & bug holes). Until next time.... TM
Thank you very much TM. We sure have plenty of Oak around here in Oregon. I built a lot of furniture and cabinets with Oak so I kind of shy away from it except for a piece like this. It was sure fun. Thanks for watching, Gary
Now thats truly unique.!!
Hi Tom, yup a little unique but sometimes I get in a weird mood..lol Thanks for watching, Gary
Came out very nice Gary good vision just really cool !!!
Thank you very much Roger and thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks for this turning. I have a similar shaped piece that I have been wondering what I could do with it. Now I have a few ideas. Love your work and this piece. The grain is great.
Thank you Doug and let me know how yours turns out. Take care, Gary
Very interesting to see how that turned out. ❤
Thank you very much and thanks for watching, Gary
Nice work, Gary. It's always interesting to see how we choose to orient the piece before we start and this was obviously a good choice.
Thank you Josh. I was determined to keep that elbow look even if I had to just drill a hole in it and not turn it. There was just something about it that I really liked. Take care, Gary
Very nice piece Gary. I understand about picking something up and the light just catches your eye and makes you focus on what is something there. You can finally see what that wood is showing you. I have had something across the shop on the floor for along time. Just one day everything looked like wow I can do that with that piece of wood. Thanks for sharing. I hope I see you on the next one.
Thanks so much Albert. Sometimes I have a piece sitting out where I can see it and can not get my mind off an idea. This was somewhere else and I was looking for a piece to turn and saw this one and it just came to me. I had wanted to do it like this before but I could not get myself to take the chance and maybe ruin it. This time there was no changing my mind. Like you say when you see it is time to do it. thanks for watching, Gary
Nice bowl. I like it !
Thank you very much for watching and commenting. Gary
I hope the worm likes Your kitchen 😅 A bowl is chunky a bit but that is good, symetry is much better with that shape. Good job on it, Gary 👍 All the best! Rav
Thanks so much Rav. I brought it in but got banned from putting it in the microwave. So I poured denatured alcohol in the holes. No plans on eating out of it so if one crawls out it will make for a good story when my wife goes running LOL. Yes it is a bit chunky and I consider taking more. But the sides of the bowl would have started dropping so I went with what I did. Good to hear from you my friend and hope all is well with you. Take care, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 That's why the oak wood should be turned thin. No surprise then when eating from that bowl 🤣 Even I could not to hold my stomacke. I'm always watching Your videos, Gary. Before Your previous video with illusion I wanted to make exactly the same illusion as You did. I seen it on other woodturner's chanel but You were faster than me. I'm still wood turning but I have no time or power to edit the videos. Have a blessed weekend my friend 👍 Rav
I think in some places they eat worms. YUK...probably not these type though.
Nice turn like the wood and finish as well..
Thank you John, I appreciate you watching and commenting. Take care, Gary
That “Elbowl” turned out very nice Gary! The shellac suits that piece perfectly, well done Sir. Take care, Wayne
Thank you Wayne. Happy you liked it and the finish I used. Take care, Gary
Love it Gary. I truly need to get back in the shop.
Thank you Tim. For sure you do. Kind of wondering when you may get back. Take care, Gary
Nice and deep , l like original sawn ends , Good work Gary. 👍
Many thanks Vini, those ends were a must for me to keep. Left the piece looking the same as when it was cut down. Take care, Gary
Very nice looking piece 👍😎
Thanks Luie I appreciate you watching and commenting. Take care, Gary
Looks good. Thanks for sharing your work. The coffee grounds do work well. I have done that as well and liked the results. I actually did some hand planing on a piece of wook out on my outside workbench today and I did not catch on fire. good to have some cooler weather. Take care. Keep up the fun.
Thank you Travis and it has cooled down where you can go outside and breath. Plus the wood in the pit needs help to get it going now. Thanks for watching, Gary
And which side would have the funny bone Gary. Well done.
Probably the left as my right shoulder is still mad at me a little.
I still want to find a nice elbow sometime to make a full bark exterior bowl. It would probably require some clever cutting and sawing to eventually end up with a rather shallow elliptic bowl with a very thick bottom, but it should look cool.
Yes is would look very cool Judith. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary, that elbow bowl you turned there turned out amazing and the bark really stands out along with the lovely grain in the wood, great job there well done.
Thank you Alan happy you liked it and thanks for watching. Take care, Gary
Nice work Gary! I've got some oak burl on my lathe right now and it's harder than a rock lol. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
Thank you Stephen. For sure Oak can be a very hard wood. Thanks for watching and God Bless, Gary
Nice piece Gary, lovely finish, neat how you've kept the shape, did turn the volume down twice thought we'd got someone useing the entrance to turn round but no it was your end alright. Grand piece and cracking finish. Take it that shoulder still giving you some jip yeh. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thank you Gary. That was my goal to keep the shape and think I got most of it I did get all the squatters out. Shoulder is doing much better but hurts I the morning when I get up. Going to keep the PT visits going for now. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
Another nice one!
Thank you Jim I appreciate you watching and commenting. Gary
love it!
Thank you very much Jane and I ❤🧡💛💚💙 your comment. Take care, Gary
I love the way you take an odd chunk of wood and turn it into a unique beauty! The bowl looks wonderful!
Thank you very much Carol. Happy you like this one. Thanks for watching, Gary
What a lovely bowl, Gary! The way you turned this unique piece was just right. Well done!
Thanks so much Greg. This was a case trying to not change the piece very much and I am happy with out it turned out. Thanks for watching, Gary
Looks cool and is so beautiful!
Thanks so much Dianne. Happy you liked it. Take care, Gary
I couldn't quite see what sort of critter you found under the bark. I guess it was a beetle, but I couldn't tell if it looked more like John, Paul, George or Ringo. ;-D Love the shape you decided on, and the bark really sets it off. I was worried when you started turning the bowl and some of the bark flew off. I thought all was lost. I wish I had your ability to see the finished product before cutting away the waste. Thanks for starting my day with another great video.
Thank you Gil. It was a worm. Seems like he enjoyed it for a long time. I knew that chunk of bark would come off because I could feel how loose it was there. But it looked ok else where. Before turning I was even figuring it could all come off. Sure glad it didn't. Thanks for watching, Gary
That's beautiful
Thank you very much Sue! Take care, Gary
Hi Gary. That is a terrific shape! Not at all what I was expecting. I do like the fact that it still has the elbow shape, and a beautiful finish. Great job , thanks! Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick. I am pretty happy with it and was surprised the Oak finished so nicely. Thanks for watching, Gary
Nice job 👍. Cheers
Thank you Sony! Take care my friend, Gary
Another great piece. You did a great job with the blank. It could have been a real headache, but you whipped into a thing of beauty. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much Doug. I was very interesting and fun to do. Happy you liked it. Take care, Gary
Nice work, Gary beautiful finish. Great job thanks! Cheers, Dave
Many thanks Dave and thanks for watching my friend. Take care, Gary
I really like your turning and caption. Spent twelve hours wondering if you fell and turned your elbow or fitted it in the lathe. Beautiful bowl.
Thanks so much Khan. I think the little issues with my shoulder prompted me to come up with that caption. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very nice piece thanks for sharing
Thank you very much Shane and thanks for watching, Gary
