@@Lifecomesfromwithin Not $1,200 worth. Yes I know because I've been doing carpentry since the age of about seven or eight, so almost 30 years now. I cut down my own trees and process my own wood from the 300ish acres set I have that was passed down from my family to me and then I make all sorts of tables, chairs, desks, cabinets, jewelry & boxes. You name it, I make it and I wouldn't ever in a million years charge somebody $1,200 for this even if I could find somebody that is dumb enough to pay that much. I have a moral foundation in which I don't take advantage of people. This guy doesn't.
Making the desk is pretty easy; making a nice one, quickly DOES take some skill and expertise; HOWEVER, the REALLY amazing part of this is finding someone willing to pay $1200 dollars for it!

Yes, that's added value through the additional labor of recording the whole thing under high production standards, including post production editing and whatnot. It's added labor value, there's no way around it, in fact, his addition of labor value with the video, has made me post comments, which in turn makes the algorithm work and make for the channel to reach further.

The hardest part about this build was finding someone to pay out $1200 for that desk.
I'm a designer I buy desks at wholesale prices (my cost) that are more money, not as nice. It's a beautiful piece. Also his time as a carpenter is worth a lot. It's a skill.

Yes the quality is there but thats it. It's just a table top. He bought the legs so...you are saying the table top is worth $1000. Hmmmmm maybe you are in a different market than I am. Perhaps that's the answer.

@@ReclaimDesign This dude scammed Mackenzie. Straight up. Way overpriced for a desk that doesn't have anything remotely different than what would count as a dining room table or coffee table. There are $800 dining tables that have a built-in Leaf that has intricate gears, hand-laid inlay, and very tight tolerances. The work this Morley did was maybe worth $400 tops and that is only because of how much time he put into it.

Here's a pro tip for you. Use wire snips to extract nails with no head on them. And staples and stuff. Squeeze hard enough to grab the nail but not too hard to cut the nail. It will work much better than pliers.
I usually just use another nail from the other side to whack it out ':) Been working pretty well so far :D

$1200 😳 I have a nice oversized custom cherry wood desk that I had a carpenter build me and it only cost $750. It has 4 drawers, enclosed on 3 sides, and the tabletop is 4'×3'. I guess things really are worth whatever someone is willing to pay.
Yeah he could also say he sold it for whatever he wants he doesn't prove the price he got shows text messages that I could easily get someone to fake.... all for a few views that's where he's trying to make money he surely didn't really make that much off that table people are gullible

As a person who has never built anything other than legos and model cars growing up, this video (in which I stumbled upon), was so amazing for someone like myself that wants to start building this spring/summer - building a couple of toy chest for my little ones. Awesome video!

Dude I just spent $2k on a used toolbox in BC and I got a pretty stellar deal. Now if I wanted build my own work table, and that's build it my self. That's like $5k and I'm not counting my own labour. But on the other hand my $2k toolbox is a lot more functional than that bullshit joke of a pallet table.

I've lived in Toronto all my life and you can walk down your neighboring street and your neighbor could be a coke head living in utter filth or they could be someone just moving in to the newly renovated line of town houses that are all 100%identical on a street across from a line of tiny dinky houses that look like tool sheds beside these 3 story mansions. Well the type of wood, grain of wood, and it being handmade really helps the value. And as he said, he agreed on $1000 for the desk so it was really only a $1000 desk. It wouldn’t be worth as low as $300 just because of the wood and it being handmade.

@@sappersilver7762 I've got a super nice L-shaped desk that an modern industrial look. I paid $1750 for it. I listed it for sale on craigslist for $350. It was in perfect condition like new. I couldn't even get $200 for it.
someone with a factory mass producing this exact table could cut the build time down 3 hours and sell the table for $300, and then when people come to your house they will say, “oh nice table I saw that at Costco”.

Just because something looks good doesn’t mean it’s worth a lot. (Not saying that something that looks bad can be worth a lot though)

The table top was nice, those legs were God awful though. Should have made some nice wooden legs but that takes real skill not just a planer

a lot of people are talking about 1200 being too much for this desk and I do agree, but I also want to mention that this is in Canadian dollars, $1200 CAD = roughly $915 USD. just keep that in mind. Edit: also the guy added the 200 extra, so the price morley listed is closer to $750 USD. which in my opinion is quite worth it for a custom desk.

My friend worked at a plant that got material from overseas. The skids that arrived were made of teak wood. He quietly gathered skids for awhile and eventually disassembled them and made teak floors for he and his fathers' boats. (skids are another name for shipping pallets).

Awesome work repurposing a old pallet. Marine varnish will last a lot longer but it off gasses a lot more because of high voc content. This is a great option I would probably choose it myself but if someone has allergies I would go with an Oil Modified waterborne like a bona finish and a satin or tongue oil hand rubbed or if you want to go European wood oil Woca makes some great products
No way it sold for 1200, im a woodworker myself and I fully realise some projects just arent worth it because the time invested isn’t corresponding with the ultimate value.. that would be a 275-350 dollar desk tops

Not what it’s meant for but I’m using pallet wood to build cabinets and counter tops for my bus and this helped a lot gave me a lot of insight on how to get it looking great

It’s not just about the cost of materials; it took him 12hrs of labor. He only charged $1,000 for it. The customer basically tipped him $200. You can set your hourly rate at whatever you want when you work for yourself. I’m guessing his hourly rate is $60. $60 x 12hrs = $780 Plus $170 for materials = $950 And probably a $50 delivery and installation fee. Makes sense to me.
@@aliveandwell3958 it works out mathematically but he simply ripped him off... if I bought a plain stainless steel kitchen knife from amazon for £20 then took 12 hours to put my maker's mark on it, give it a new handle, re temper it and resharpen it, no one is buying that knife for 1,200 because at the end of the day it was a £20 knife, at the absoloute max you could get £100 regardless of the fact I put 12 hours into it
I see all the “knothead” respondents claiming the desk isn’t worth the price McKenzie voluntarily paid for it. What McKenzie paid for worked out like this: $200 for materials, $1,000 for the carpenter’s experience of knowing “how” to do something, and more importantly, “why” it mattered. You can only sand a knot so long before you must give up removing the knothead. You can’t fix stupid. Beautiful work, great video, inspiring to say the least. Keep up the fantastic thinking.
Duuuuude!!! Been following the woodworking community for ages. I have a woodworking business myself. Most channels follow the same boring progression: “I have three tools and you can do this if I can do it” --> “Here’s some builds that sell” -> “Wow guys amazing that you like my stuff” -> “I quit…my job ha ha gotcha” -> “so I have this free CNC machine” …then they just become what they always were and no one can relate. But this is a breath of fresh air! Keep doing you brother.
I usually turn pallets into camp fire wood, but this is a much more interesting option. Looks amazing!
a lot of pallets are treated with chemicals be careful to not breathe in the fumes.

I used to do this too! But I stopped, because pallet wood is usually treated with chemicals that are notttt good to inhale as smoke. It's not an immediate effect, but over time it might bring health issues. Take care man, and sculpt a beautiful desk!
From floor refinishing experience: don’t over apply finish. 2 coats of gloss and 1 coat of satin is the best. More coats - higher chance of cracking.

@@jessiejanson1528 Yeah, never too sure about that, either: I got impatient with some Rustoleum enamel spray paint on my bathroom's laundry chute flapper door & frame; there was some rust due to scratches; I did some good sanding work, and feathered it out pretty well, and first coat looked SUPER nice, but then, I noticed an area that didn't get fully coated; but I got impatient, and tried to 2nd coat it too soon, and it ~dissolved the first coat: it got all 'pruney', and started peeling off...so, had to clean off all the soft/loose stuff, let it 'cure' for a couple more days before I could sand it again, and then repaint... It looks like a real amateur job (which, of course, it IS...), but I have a lot more work to do on that bathroom's walls, plumbing, so, maybe I'll go back at it, again, later. At least there will be much less rusting until then: I prepped & painted inside & outside.

I use vice grips to get the short nails out, but some of them break anyway. Watching your work really gave me some ideas of how to better use the pallets I have collected.
What surprised me was how weathered and worn-looking the pallet looked. There was a store that gave me free brand new pallets for the asking that were stacked up behind the store.. Took the pallets and made shelving for my garage. I used a similar process that Morley used, but took half the time. $1200 was too much for a simple desk. He basically charged for the manhours involved, but the desk wasn't unique in design.
It was $1000 if you watched the whole video. Guy gave him a $200 tip. $85/hour with materials and delivery included for a one off handmade piece seems pretty decent honestly.....

@@ClassicCase you aren't grasping the big picture here. The guy that bought it probably has no woodworking skill OR tools. Can't have one without the other. Tools are expensive and woodworking takes time to learn. He is paying for a custom piece. The laborer is supplying his skill, time, tools, gas etc....the client is supplying a "yes i like that idea" and the agreed money to back it up. That's how a capitalistic system works. If people think someone is charging too much well they don't get paid and the business shuts down, or they make necessary changes to offer things at a more affordable price point.....regardless handmade and bespoke ANYTHING will demand a premium, not just woodworking. Hope that helps

I love that you’re time stamping everything. As someone who struggles with adult ADD, time management is one of the most difficult things to overcome when trying to learn a new skill. Every other creator except for some of AlmFabs videos does not really say how long they spend doing something, which is a bit misleading for someone about to try the same thing. Great video

In order to crack apart pellets, I place a scissor car lift jack between the planks and insert a small piece of flat metal bar between the narrow side of the jack and the plank. This keeps the plank from splitting. The planks will unfold as you turn the jack. After that, you can either cut or remove the nails.

Beautiful work! On cutting through the nail though - I have a story to tell. My father used to build a lot of furniture with reclaimed lumber. He’d put an ad in the paper as a “demolition man”, and offer to take down old barns, fences, etc. for free if he could keep the wood. When I was about 5 years old, he reached a similar point to where you got with one stubborn nail. He decided to persevere, and cut through on his little Makita table saw. He put on his goggles, pushed the board forward, and the nail dislodged itself, and shot straight back at him, puncturing his glasses and his skull at the temple. He proceeded to walk into the house, dazed, and my Mom freaked out. We got him to the ER, and the neurosurgeon there told him he was lucky to be alive. He told him that the only thing the surgeon could do was pull out the nail, and pray that nothing went wrong. He yanked out the nail with some pliers, and my father survived it, though he never recovered his sight properly in that eye. Having seen this, I do not run boards with nails through any table saw. It’s simply not worth it.

I wanted them to realize that we also saw ads, and with like 3 ad breaks in a video with 6m views you made some $ from youtube, also you had 24 patrons at the time and made some money from that (thanks to your mom!) AND the epoxy company sent you the product for free and you had a link, possibly affiliate link, which would have been another source of income. KZhead is essentially a service business as opposed to a product business since you're providing entertainment. .... does that all check out? I told the class that I have no idea what youtube revenue is for you (cpm?) but it's possible that you made more money on the video/patreon/sponsership than you made on the table .... you don't have to go into detail, but is that a fair guess?
I recently redid an old dresser and was super happy with the results of it. This inspired me to try out to make some kind of furniture with a pallet thank you!
Coming from someone in the woodworking industry, I give you kudos for using something that you admittedly don't have much experience in and turning it not only into a profit for the table but also with your KZhead fans. 12 hours for this size desk is Ludacris in reality, but doing it as a side hustle for yourself is definitely impressive.

I don't think it really matters what other people think! Have any of the people here posting negative comments actually worked with wood before? I don't have any carpentry skills, I am a techy. But, I have worked with wood before in various places, and both my father and brother are craftsmen who have built all kinds of things. The guy didn't edit out his mistakes; instead, he showed how to work around them. It was more time-consuming, but he wanted to make something for the buyer he already had. Once you put that together, knots and all. What you actually find is a solid piece of wood that you can connect with. Remember the guy he sold it to was more interested in eco-living. If he had hit the wooden part of the table into that wall, I think it would have been a different story. I doubt anybody would really care much about the legs of the table. If there is a problem, he can just reprint and add the pieces again; he said that to the buyer. Some people get really excited about something like this. It isn't perfect, but the idea that it was once a pallet would be amazing as something has been repurposed. I doubt you would be able to do this with pallets in England, or even Chep, as they are all softwood. You got lucky finding pallets that had hardwood.

Ive actually done this before. When i was 6-7 during my school holiday i went to a carpenter’s house that my dad knew and throughout that holiday i worked on that desk and im still using it to this day. The table top of the desk is make from a recycled pallet

This is a original plus the hard work and wood you can't find today I paid in 1997 just under 100.00 for a round with modern large leg in middle of table order especially for our family still in style strong and beautiful not thin like other breakfast or could be a dinning table. I got the high rated pallet buster with tilting feet from amazon for $53 and I gotta say... pallet boards are almost always spared from cracking and the teardown process went from like 30 minutes to 3 minutes. Seriously worth a try. Also, be sure to metal detect pallet wood after you de-nail because often times those nails were strung together with metal wire which stays imbedded in the pallet wood and can damage your blades. love the pallet videos. Subbed.
That's a good reason to tun Diablo steel blades in all your saws. If you don't hit any steel they last a long time.

I have to say, you did a great job on this. The amount of work & construction design is worth every penny. I’ve seen particle board furniture sell for more. This being all solid wood and labor combined, worth it.
I made a planter and a few other items from used building wood and pallets. I'm not a carpenter, just a guy with a saw and a hammer. Where I'm from you can pick up a used EPal for about $10-15, or find plenty lying around. Sure, it won't be a burlwood/mahogany fancy table, but it looks very good because of your finish work and the recycling bit is important too. After all, so much usable stuff is just thrown away.

tip: you need to understand the moisture of the wood. store the raw wood indoors; where it will end up, for weeks or more before working it and keep it indoors during the whole project. get a moisture probe and measure. Reason is that as it dries it will warp and you don't want that. if it is at the moisture level of the environment it will live in while working it will warp less.
That pallet wood is kiln dried and heat treated it will never absorb moisture again.

Bro it’s a pallet lol it would have been kiln dried and mass milled by teenagers who don’t give a fuck on not much over minimum, then whacked together by a slightly more senior person who also doesn’t care, then had bags of wet mulch on it from what the video said since 2019, where it’s probably spent it’s life between a cold warehouse or outside through the seasons. I think it’s well and truly past keeping indoors for a 2 weeks lol how it is now is how it will be until the world ends my man unless it sinks on a ship
this happened to me with some cured/chemically treated wood from home depot, i used my welder skills and clamped one hell of a reverse twist in it, soaked it, then hit it with a heat gun. to my suprise it was actually straight the next day.
Yeah pallet wood has been exposed to numerous climates,and that's usually not a problem.👍

Have you thought about possibly adding a GFI or replacing an outlet with a GFI that way if you blow it you can reset it right there at the outlet you probably know about that anyway but thanks for your time.
if you have a nail that breaks into the wood and you can't get it off, get a plug cutting bit and cut a plug where the nail is stuck, the nail will come off with the plug, then simply plug the hole back with a dowel from a scrap piece. also when you use pallet wood for projects, get yourself a pin pointing metal detector and scan your wood for Embedded nails before you cut them on a table saw, planer or jointer, trust me it is worth it.

I cringed when he A) Didn't finish sand it along the grain with a sanding block to remove the swirls that orbitals leave, B) When he smacked the packs of varnish mix on the sanded surface which would leave scratches, C) Smacked the finished table down on an solid table top that could have had something on it that would mar the finish.

Wow that time tracking is great. I wish every youtuber did that. I like to take a paint scraper to the excess glue seepage when it's slightly dry but before fully curing - much easier than sanding it all off.
Fellow woodworker here, I like using painters tape to surround a gap/crack. Makes for less sanding and less low points when trying sand away little glue blobs. Running a chisel gently down a glue line is super satisfying as well. Hope you didn't get sick when epoxy coating the table in your apartment. It's toxic my guy.

Nice! In case you were wondering the wood you’re working with is hickory. Also i’m not sure that you check the moisture content of the word before assembling it. When you picked it up from the person you bought it off of she said there was I believe fertilizer on it? Most likely a bunch of moisture has been soaked into the wood and can lead to issues over time shrinkage. There are many pin meters that you can get. Also, your wood moisture wants to be around 5 to 8% moisture Contant for any sort of furniture, or in my case, flooring. Hope this helps your business.

This comment is just my curiosity regarding craftsmanship, integrity, and value....basically, this is a cutting board with damaged legs, glued together in the hope that it will not expand, contract, or otherwise lose its strength integrity and its being valued at (including the labor) $1,200 (Canadian) or about $935 (USD). Yeah this didn't look like a high end woodworking deserving of the price at all. I guess Things are worth what people will pay for them. But a desk without storage is a.... Table. Plus it was damaged upon delivery. I'd certainly not have sent extra on top for that. And in the end to me it still looks like ratty butcher block wood with some fake gold legs. I see it as being worth less than the time and value put into it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose.
I look over at the $99 Husky wood top 40'' tall work table and see an angle iron steel frame, a 1'' thick block of engineered wood coated in lacquer...and it feels good knowing I got a $900 table for $99 >.>

I'm actually really impressed that this was not clickbait. You legitimately took a pallet made it look beautiful and then turned it into something usable. Granted definitely not something anybody can do without all those extra expensive tools that you have but that being said it's fantastic to see the level of skill that you have and making something old and dirty look that great

I made the same table for 160. Got a butcher block counter from Home Depot, used Rubio monocoat (superior finish imo), and put some legs on it. I made my gf a standing desk one by attaching adjustable standing desk legs from Amazon to it. Much less work, beautiful finish. But I understand the point was to recycle a pallet and make it into a usable item.

Must say very impressed with the table from that pallet and the breakdown of cost, its impressive what people can make with some knowledge and the ability to sell/market stuff (I personally don't have any luck in that department, yet i know people that i could give a table etc too that ive had up for months and be gone in a week doing nothing different lol) Also cost breakdown is where it can then get complicated because if your running it as a business there is other overheads you have to factor into the cost power,equipment, insurance etc and if its a hobby/side hustle ever country and state has different laws retaining to how much you can earn without paying tax on income and also the sale of goods. Keep at it, you seem like a genuine person so good luck with your adventure :)

I work in a receiving department and I am always moving pallets around. This is so cool watching you recycle and repurpose pallets that would have otherwise been forgotten or used up til it was thrown away.

Good video. First few coats in gloss and the final coat(s) in satin are right on for almost all satin type finishes. I do this with my guitar finishes. Thanks for the video!
If you get a pallet where all you really want to salvage is the planks (more common with skids) you can use a reciprocating saw with a thin "demo" blade between the planks and beams and cut the nails; removing the wood you want very quickly. If you use a cordless version you can do it on site where you find the pallet and make the entire pallet take up less room in your vehicle. I punch the nails out from the cut side, with a springloaded center punch usually just one or two taps knock them out.
YES! The the absolute best way to do it. I used to struggle with a flat bar and hammer trying to break them down, then, I saw someone doing it the how you mentioned and was blown away. Such a time saver!

This is the best/easiest way if you won't be using the center beams, just the planks. But if you do want to use the center beams, you'll want to use a different method, else you'll have to be very careful with any cutting or planing of them. @@denverflatpackjedithornton Also, there are the rare pallets with screws instead of nails, get yourself a cordless impact driver and a cordless reciprocating saw and you can blast those pallets apart in minutes, also in my experience comes in handy if you want to say reclaim wood from a furniture piece someone has thrown away you can just take the pieces you want (ie a dining tabletop can be a great source for fairly decent hardwoods)
A pair of end cutters does a great job of pulling stubborn nails. Controlled pressure on the cutter grabs the nail really well, and the curved jaw rolls around to make a smooth pull.
