The Mythical 1HD-FTE, 4Bie owners lust after them but what makes them so Good to begin with? In This video we'll find out for ourselves
Music at intro By Bensound - Dreams
I always and still do love the sound of this engine
Thank you for making this and your wealth of knowledge. I had no clue that these were such impressive engines.
I owned a 105 Series Cruiser with 1hz contemplating a turbo but your video inspired me to buy a 1HDFTE instead. I sold the 1hz with 240,000kms and picked up a 1HDFTE 100 series with 585,000kms for the same money. Very happy with the FTE it’s mint mostly highway kms so i figure it’s still got life in her.
Glad the video helped you to make the decision 😁. Do you have any socials would love to give you a follow. Mine is @tai392 on instagram
why give up the SFA?
Good move. The 1HZ is a hand grenade when aftermarket turbocharged and has nowhere near the potential of 1HDT or 1HDFTE engine.
I have a 105 with 1HDFTE .Motor only had 130 000km
Great video, very informative. Could you please do a similar video about the 12HT engine? There seems to be nowhere on KZhead (and on the Internet) where I can find a complete review of this masterpiece.
309,000kms and just a pup by all accounts I look forward to a long life with this unit--bought new--has not missed a beat. 14 years and counting. TC
I drive a 79 series with the 1HD FTE engine. It has done 494,000 Kms and still runs perfectly. The most amazing thing about this engine is the fact that the oil stays clean between servicing at 10,000 km intervals. When I say clean, I mean clean, to the point it is hard to see the oil on the dipstick. But I do have a question that you may be able to answer. Apart from the sticker on the timing belt cover, I have not been able to find a Toyota logo on the engine anywhere and I find that very odd. I have heard unconfirmed stories that the engine was built for Yanmar to their specs by Toyota and that due Toyota having the troubles that you mentioned here, they got permission to use it in their own vehicles.
Great videos... keep them coming 👍
As I bought a LC100 from 2007 in my new home country, Panama, little did I know what I exactly bought, to be honest. It is fitted with a 1HD-FTE with 250K km. The more I drive the car and “experiment” with its capabilities, the more I get surprised by what it can do. One year ago, I payed $20K American for it, which, I tought at the time: “ quite expensive for a 15yo car”. Shortly after I bought it, I made my first visit to an official Toyota dealer. I was welcomed with a: “my goodness, it’s just a BABY!”. Today I came across your video, as I am getting deeper and deeper into this … 4x4 rabbit hole. Every time i see a 4Runner of about 15 yo drive by, I think: “man, thats a beautiful car”. But immediately I am aware of what BEAST I am driving. I’m so happy with it, and you just confirmed this even more. Thanks for the info.
Very informative Sir, Thankyou thumbs up and subscribed
I’ve had mine for 15 years and I love it! I’ll never sell my cruiser.
Ours has been in the family for 10 years. Doesn't skip a beat
my 2001 landcrouser is the best in history, I will sell my wife before selling my car, and no new engine ever outrun it, it never stops running, even with half the systems shut down.
Great information. Very interesting about the 1HD bearing problem, similar problems in the UK. I have spent a lot of time in Malaysia, I have a house near KLIA, I must say your English is very good, no heavy Malaysian accent, did you school in England? I love straight six engines, I also love diesels and Land Cruisers, so for me these engines are the best. Oh yes, the Toyota factor, that makes them the best. My favourite is the 1HDFT purely for it's simplicity for me to repair. Great video, very good information on the greatest Diesels ever built.
Glad that you like it 😍 it's the shame these cost a diamond in a half relatively speaking on the used market 😂
Excelent info thankyou. you have a new subscriber.
Literally just purchased a 1hdfte 79series ute here in Australia today. Have owned an 1hz 79series for 8 years. The 1hz non turbo is an amazing engine. Under powered but extremely reliable.. the new fte has amazing power on exactly the same running gear (gearbox and diffs upgraded) but suspension and steering identical.. the difference is unbelievable between the fte and 1hz. Thankyou for your video. I am now subscribed 😀
Hey there, glad to hear you've made the jump to the best 79 generation imo 😆 I've always had a soft spot for the HDJ79 especially the HDJ79RV.
you mean 75 that came with the 1HZ the 76 came with 1HD-FTE in the later models before the 79 replace it and it has the V8 unless its had an engine swap done.
Excellent review. I just want to ask you what do you think about the last Toyota Diesel engine 2.8. - 1GD-FTV ? Thanks
You should make more videos this was a pretty good video explore more into the landcruiser itself and maybe get into other 4x4s for some content. Like a comparison between the cruiser and a saf
Glad you liked it. Sadly a comparo could only really work in OZ since they have boatload of Safaris. The safari is rare here at least relative to the number of land Cruisers that is
Please do a video on the 1HDFT in the 80 Series cruisers! Love your info videos!
Thanks for watching 😁. I'm in the process of sourcing a 24Valve 80 Series for filming. Stay Tuned 😁

I have had 2 of them Brilliant
My 2000 1HZ naturally aspirated diesel was financially written off. I loved that car so much even though I needed a packed lunch just to drive up a hill. I replaced her with a 2000 1HDFTE. Now I don’t even get in a bite and I’m there already.
Good job Tai, very details video . Since you seem to have good sources, what do you think would be the enhancement for an 1hd-ft that would be equiped with 1hdfte injector nozzles and pistons? Cheers mate
Glad you liked it. An FT with FTE nozzle, piston and injectors could probably increase the power output. The key is still in that injection pump system though. Not sure if it helps but many have had success doing an FTE minus E(non electric pump) conversion.
Nice info bro
Thank you for explaining this vid on a Japanese diesel. I’m an American thinking on doing a project car with one of these with a Japanese diesel. I already have a Jetta 1.9 AHI TRI and it’s fun and efficient to drive, but I’m looking for a diesel Herspers build, because I love diesels; two, they are efficient and mean accelerators (my Jetta pulls really hard out of turns for a semi stock 1.9 four banger); three, the sound l, you can’t get any more aggressive with a diesel noise terms, they are awesome😎. With much love from America.
Hey there glad you enjoyed the video. I've heard great things about the VW 1.9tdi. Would want own this or the OM606 down the line 😆
Loving engine i still love it
Put an fte in my 105 series landcruiser. I will never part with it. Great video thanks mate
Glad you liked it!
I spoke with a mechanical engineer from northern russia. He told about and showed me pictures of his friends 98 land cruiser 100 that had run 2.000.000km. I didn't believe him until he showed me the pictures. Absolutely incredible. That's an average of 230km every day for 24 years. They usually import japanese cars and have some rare japanese models.
Nice video Bro
That's very informative! I feel like I've learned more about this engine! Thanks alot
Thank You!
Do a video on the 4jj1 💪
I like the sound very solid
Please do a video on the pros and cons of the 1VD-FTTV 🙏🙏
Wow a pure 1HD fte sound the engine is very new
Not just Toyota’s greatest engine I believe it would be the best diesel car engine every made
It's definitely worthy to be in the Top 10 Diesel engines ever made in my books 😍
6bt?
Make sure to replace those BEBS
@@SacrumImperiumRomanum517Killer Dowel Pin knocks the 6BT/4BT down a few pegs
Mercedes OM606 was a good engine too.
Similar, 1HD-T 12-Valve with 270,000 kms... Never missed a beat.
Great engine no doubt about it
IMO its one of the best of Toyota's diesel engines along side the 1HZ it may not have the power of a 1HD-FTE but damn they wont die my 75 has just clicked over 300k and most of that was done on farm land it probably has around 50k of highway driving the rest is all off road same with our 105 its an ex Parks Vic patrol car.
Make a video on the 2AD-FHV please!
Awesome video brother Any other diesel or petrol engine that's reliable from volkswagen or toyota? And can this one be fitted to kia sportage 2008

btw not that I care but you forgot to link those things in the description.

1hz for the win
Nice video mate 👍I have a hdj80 with a 1hdfte converted , best Toyota diesel engine ever
Thanks. My dream Toyota 4bie would be a FTE swapped 80 or 105
I really wish Toyota could have put this engine in the Tundra. Seems like a solid engine with some good torque
Would be a lovely pairing. Plus the aftermarket scene would flourish with you guys toying with it. Maybe even a cummins challenger 😂
This Land Cruiser with this endine 100 and 80 series are still very expensive and getting more in the Phillipine, especially the locally sold for the domestic market, GCC market and even the JDM converted to LHD. 30-40k usd(50 php per 1 dollar) for the local, GCC and JDM for 10k usd.
Bagus bro!
Wow bro 👍
Thank you!
It's great, but Toyota required to replace the Crankshaft and Connecting Rod bearing at 150.000 KM, the indicator it's need to replace the bearing is low oil pressure under 1 Bar at idle.
Hi, 1hd-fte what is the maximum pressure the stock turbine should produce? I have 0.9 bar, is rhis normal press?
very nice vid but atleast tr put more effort of blocking lisen plate hahahha btw sabah here too
Do a vid on the 1hdft! How much better is it than an FT and how much better is the FTE? We’re not getting the FTE in America for another few years and I want an off road touring rig. With an emphasis more towards off-road.
Hi there, sorry I couldn't respond to your comment due to notification of KZhead playing up. The 1HDFT is probably the pinnacle of mechanical injection diesel engine for Toyota but the FTE'S electronic fuel pump makes the driving experience so much better as it's more responsive and overall more fun to drive.
i have the the vnt turbo on my LC amazon. Modified to bost at 30 psi.
That's awesome! How does it go it's pretty smooth from I hear
As a mechanic I love this engine in my 22yr old Cruiser "never a problem", But I am going to fly this question by you because you seem to research things like this, Why did Toyota put the oil filter upside down so it drains of oil so quick when parked, seems silly when it takes that bit longer to get oil pressure when started..Cheers Dave
Hey there, unfortunately I can't give you the answer to your question as I don't have access to the people responsible who designed this engine
I just bought my 100 LC 4.2td😂! 1 million miles easy!!!!! 95k currently
Bole tak break sistem hdj101 di ubah ke sistem break hdj80 Manuel..
Serious question. Is it possible to make a brand new 1hdfte using the 1hz block and aftermarket parts? Will the cooling jacket and gaskets fit?
The basic block is mostly the same. It's the rotating assembly and cylinder head that's the real headache. And the fuel pump setup. I've seen some push a HZ-T to 500WHP so there's a big chance you can transplant the innards.
Hi boss. Ada beza ka 4s dan 5s ? Sabahan here 👋

Nice. Tip for anyone in the market, the auto is better than the manual. Uses a ford f250 gearbox and is just a beast off and on road. Mines rocking a badboy extreme Gturbo w/ a chip, exhaust, intercooler. Its quicker than my parents 200 series v8 twin turbo diesel, and stronger! LOVE FROM AUSTRALIA
Glad you liked it 😍 the auto imo makes it so much easier for the control and making the thing keep itself on boost. The 1VD is great engine no doubt but the small issues makes it just miss out on the Crowning jewel of Toyota diesels imo 😂
How did you go about transmission conversion, I’ve got a 5 speed auto which does not like extra power very much
@@sappo6342 this runs a 4 speed auto. Great 'box imo. I'm aware the 5 speed auto has the overdrive issues 😅
@@TAI-lr5vr yeah the 4 speeds are decent, bigger box ect. In Australia especially with the 5-speed tuners are getting pretty good at tuning them to handle decent power, but I'm tossing up if I should just trade my auto for a manual haha

A little help guys and gals... I am trying to locate the turbo boost sensor for my LC100. Where is the intercooler located as well? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I have the same model 100 series and was wondering relating to the oil pressure you showed , was that idling from cold start. my pressure goes up to 1/2 on cold and under load but when idling goes down to 1/4
Yes it is. I have noticed on the late model 5at cars the oil pressure doesn't go up nearly as high as the 5at cars have VSV
Great video mate!! only 18 subscribers?? please people get him 1000 subs!
Do you have any social media? Would love to follow you and your work!
Hey there, my social media is the same as the YT account name. @tai392 on Instagram. Though these sorts of projects only come every 2 months or so due to time constraints like work and research material hard to pin down with most being in Japanese 😂
I have a 2003 79 series rv has 340 klms so far no dramas . Have fitted industrial fuel and oil filters from Filter Technology Newcastle. Save a fortune in oil had the oil tested At 30,000 klms still ok soot particles were 0.4 ppm max allowed 2.0 ppm The filters are separate to the factory filters. And finer 2 micron fuel and oil . Factory filters 10 microns
Hello what do you think a bout 1hz ist good ?? Specially for off road ,mud , desert...
The 1HZ is a very strong, reliable engine that just keeps going. It’s incredibly slow, but it just doesn’t die. It feels like driving a tractor but you can always rely on it. The only issue with the 1HZ is when it comes to sand driving, where you really feel it’s lack of power if it’s over sand dunes.

Hi. Where do we find our engine number on 2005 model?
Nice video. Just watch the volume. It's up and down, hi and low. Quite annoying, deafening. If you keep it constant and a bit improved editing required. Good effort

Indeed.. do a normal general video that would much appreciated.. i need to turn volume up and down lol...
@@Merzdaman same it annoys the Heck outta me on it too. A Redo is probably due 😂
Aint got a bar on the 12ht
agreed probably best engine toyota has made. but unfortunately these go for 12k+ now so if youre wanting an engine swap and big power, people with that large of a budget are looking at duramax's and cummins as theyre bigger and more powerful and in similar price range
Thanks for your input, but unfortunately cummins, duramax's are prohibitively expensive here in Malaysia where the roadtax for a LB7 would cost 1,300 USD a year. Even if its registered as a utility vehicle.
How does it compares to the 1HZ in terms of reliability?
Lemme put it this way. My parent bought his 2007 model in 2008. Last year as i drove it, the speedometer ends at 180, and it aurpassed the limit and bent down like it was doing 220 or smthn. Mileage is 240,000 engine has never had issues or been opened. Only challenge i came across was that the break booster pump failed in 2017, some mechanic replaced a small part in it and charged me 70,000 ksh (700USD at that time) , a new brake booster pump in toyota kenya nairobi is 3,000 usd.
@@zakgt500 Thanks. That's very helpful
The 12H-T is Toyota's greatest diesel, it started it all
How many hp you can put out of this engine
what's the average fuel economy for 1HD-FTE?
how is the next diesel v8 on j200 compared with this ?........j200 not so old........
Someone should engine swap a 1hd into a Tundra. I think It would be great
Make more video bro
Only thing i have a problem with is the 2.8 hilux is literally just this engine minus 2 cylinders, and better balancing and vibration handling in the crank plus dont need a forged crank either unless you want more than 20 PSI Only problem with the 2.8 is that it cant take load at all, its good when the cars full but if it then also has to tow something then it becomes an issue, but even then you can negate thag by getting 4.8 diffs and reduction gears then 31 by 10.5 and you shouldnt have much trouble Really the only problems ive come across in the 2.8 is that it gets a little hot sometimes when turboed, and the main weared parts are around cylinder 3 back. If yoy want to turbo a 2.8 you need to rebuild the injectors, get a boost compensated pump and then hook it all up and it shouldnt over fuel it nor under fuel it, if you just use the stock pump it runs too rich and the load on the engine is increased, plus its only looking to be about 1000 for a boosted pump hopefully.
Hi bro..i have the 2.8 you are talking about and looking with envy on this hd engine😬. So we are in the same boat talking about turboing our asthmatic 2.8😅. Hey but take heart the 2.8 na will survive a nuclear holocaust 🙂
@@hokz7283 oh yea NA they will go forever and theyre a good starter car, but ive been researching alot on how these engines fail and what you need to make them efficient, cause thats what a turbo on the 2.8 is really for you gotta think its already getting over fueled stock cause theres not enough air being sucked in. If you get a boost compensated pump thatll stop it being really rich at thw start and then leaning out, and youll actually be able to get it tuned to 20 psi with a good turbo
@@hokz7283 also apparently someones putting a 2hdt in a hilux and thats because he seen a RB30 swap
@@samtimo3002 can we not just adjust the fuel enrichment screw to allow for lesser fuel then stock setting?. I have heard that turboing the 2.8d is not a good idea because of overheat issue. As for fuel efficiency issue is it possible to slightly advance the fuel pump to gain something? Here in my country we don't have any 2Lt engines to source exhaust manifold for turbo. I even thought of trying the isuzu 4ja1 turbo system on it.
@@hokz7283 try looking at the later 5L hiluxes theyre manifolds work great thats what im using rn, same ambidextrous pattern And if you get a boost compensated pump and a proper tune your EGTs will be down low asf, the only over heating issue youll get is when the 2.8s coolant system is fucked, like the oil is being cooled but the coolant in the head via the oil filter, if you take that off where the oil filter bolts to theres like a cooling jacket that has oil passages in the head of the coolant passage And those idiots that say turboing the 2.8 is bad are fucking retarded, the bloke im getting my engine built at has put a turbo set up on a hilux before after 200 thousand ks, all he done was injectors and a boost compensated pump, with a professional tune and he said he used to thrash the cunt out of the thing And the reason why i say get a tune is because you need one my mate with a TD42 patrol put a mambo turbo on it or something like that upgraded the intercooler and had high asf EGTs when he tuned it himself, said he wanted yo grt it tuned but sold it and bought a bike instead Also if your using the stock pump what will happen is itll pump the fuel, but too much when your foots to the floor and when the boosties come online itll be lean asf And yes you can time it in a certain direction to gain more NA power but im not that advanced just yet, im still learning how to turbo shit myself and tbh im gonna get the bloke im building it with time it all up properly
Do a 1kd video pls
There will be some on the 4jj1 and 1kd when there's a vehicle I can borrow
Sorry but the 12HT has that accolade, and yes all Toyota engines good and great build quality, I cannot believe I have been driving the same car for over 25 years.

350,000 km and more economical than most 4 cylinder engines. Best engine Toyota have produced.

80 series and 100 series
