  • An absolute “must-have” for campfire cooking is an old-fashioned Dutch Oven. You know - the heavy cast iron, lipped lid, three-legged pan. The history of this cooking wonder goes back hundreds of years in various forms. In 1704, an Englishman by the name of Andrew Darby, taking what he learned by observing the Dutch system of making these cooking vessels, patented a process similar to them and produced cast-metal cooking vessels for Britain and the new American colonies. The term “Dutch Oven” has been used since about 1710. American’s changed the design over time, including making a shallower pot, putting legs on it, and flanging the lid, which has been credited to famous colonist Paul Revere.

  • American history Paul Revere is credited with the design of the flat lid with a ridge for holding coals as well as the addition of legs to the pots. ( sorry I googled)

  • Yummy! As a former Dutch oven catering cook-if you make the bottom ring of briquettes in a circle near the edge of the Dutch oven, and the same on the top; it will cook better. Dutch ovens cook from the outside inwards. Many many times if you put all your coals in one spot underneath it will burn. This is also true when burying a Dutch Oven. The coals/briquettes need some air circulation. I’ll bet that was a larapin meal though!!

  • Dutch ovens with feet and rimmed lid are referred to as camp ovens also. Also if you get a lid stand you can set that lid upside down and cook in like a griddle...

  • IMO, camping should be taught as a school requirement. Along with cooking over a fire. All the sustainable things to save your life should be taught. I had been in an ice storm that hit us a long while back and everyone in our apartment complex left to go to motels with electricity. I stayed and fixed all my meals on my coal grill. Breakfast was amazing... the smell of coffee got a few neighbors wandering over for a cup and a chat. Those were good times.

  • I don’t have a fire pit. Actually, I don’t have a Dutch oven either. But I watched this whole video and it was great!!!! And now I’m hungry. 😊 My mom always had cast iron. I hated it. I’m learning to appreciate it and slowly learning to use it. Pretty cool video.

  • You got a night of frost. We went from 65 degrees to a foot of snow this morning😩😩😩😩it looks like a Christmas card outside, but this is just too much. The snow actually finally melted last week and we had a few lovely days in the 60s and low 70s, it was like a balm for the soul.. I want to be outside and try to start a small garden again this year , after years of difficult illness, the loss of my mom , my best friend and my closest male friend and 8 more family members and friends since 2018. My daughter has also been ill with severe anorexia , so life has been hard these last years. I’m still very ill with several autoimmune diseases , so they will never completely go away. I have now, after months of research put in place a routine of natural supplements and teas that really seems to work for me. But my body is so weak after years of illness and surgery, that I can barely walk😢 But I think it would be great just to try a few of my raised beds, to be outside in the sun and watch things grow feels very healing . I need to make a tiny greenhouse nook on my patio, because I really want to grow some heirloom tomatoes. At the store they are now $9 for a pund😮😮😮😮😮😮 (I can’t do that.. as I’m now on disability pay and supporting my daughter who is 24, since she’s to sick to work) I also really want spinach , that’s so easy to grow and that cost $3 for a bag the size of one of those tiny chip bags that comes in the big boxes. The prices here are insane now. Gas is $12 per gallon, milk is $3.50 for a 2 pint carton. A bread is $5.50 . So to be able to grow a little bit of vegetables would also save us money . My dream is to make most of my lawn in to raised beds, but I think I need to get a man first😂😂😂😂 I just don’t have the energy to date, and guys like Zach don’t hang on trees ready to be picked unfortunately 😅😅😅😅

  • OMG..that's what I need is a cast iron dutch oven with the lid and legs.We lose power all the time and I find myself cooking outdoors all the time .Having a cast irn dutch oven would make life so much easier.Baked beans outdoors roasts and whatever especially when you lose power in the winter and there is a foot or more of snow, even when you want to cook out in the summer..I love bisquits in the cast iron dutch oven too...Have you ever tried BROWNIES IN ONE? LOLOLOLOL I have and they are so delicious..But as I said I haven't one.My dad did and he cooked a lot of meals in a dutch oven..TRY BROWN BREAD IN ONE...OMG...DELICIOUS.....FROM CT(CONNECTICUT)
