I like how Chris is turning this car into a business expense so it doesn't bankrupt him 😂
was just about to say you need a good running youtube channel to keep these cars running😂😂😂, I guess thats why mine doesnt run 🤣🤣
Came here to echo the comments on how much I enjoyed this 20 minute video 5 minutes after it went up. And Enzo is a great name for a dog.
childhood dog was named enzo after the car. best dog ever.
@@bradwillard8009 I know a supercar owner who has a pet called Enzo. However, Enzo is not a dog. He's a (ridiculously chilled-out) Bengal tiger. When he was an adolescent cub rescued from a circus, he used to ride around town leaning out the passenger window of a yellow Lamborghini Diablo.
More of these video please, bloody enjoy Chris being Chris and pooring over older cars
“Pooring”, that was Freudian
Looking forward to the E28 M5 vid even more than I did this one. CH's earlier vid on it in his Drive era is one of my faves.
Chris, I did a full Porsche Carbon Ceramic conversation on my E60 M5 15 years ago… speak to BG Developments in Bromsgrove or reach out as I still have the drawings for the disc bells and calliper carriers to convert the PCCB’s to BMW, front and rear (rears had the handbrake designed in the bells) 👍
Please share! I was about to order the carbon ceramics from a F82/F87 to bolt up to my E61 M. But PCCB sounds way more interesting. How difficult and expensive did that project turn out? How well did Porsche parts integrate with the car? Really cool, never heard of someone doing that retrofit.
That's cool, I wanna see that 👍
I put Ceramics from a McLaren SLR up front on my E36 M3 GT back in 2007 :D
Any details you can share James?
@ all you boys, James wanted Chris’s attention and response, not yoll, sorry lads!!!
Loved the line of 10w60 in the boot floor 😂
We need Chris Harris and Sreten from M539Restorations content😮
Two proper car people. Doesn't get better than that.
Honestly, V10, estate car....This thing could be up on blocks 90% of the time and I'd still be DEEPLY in love with it. Also, YES: INTAKE NOISE!! No moaning, droning, vacuum cleaner wooshing noises; let me hear pistons and valves!
"Get off the f**king ramp" 😂
enzo! 😂
I had a Golf R32 for a couple of years. I enjoyed nothing more than going to the “doctor” to put it up and discuss what needs fixing. There’s something about these car discussions with the mechanic especially when you appreciate every part of the car driving experience and you look forward to making it even better.
Niel O and Chris back on the "On Cars" love this stuff, thanks boys 🤪
The genuine car nuttery that is Mr. Harris brings utter joy to me!
I saw the E28 in the end, that is a PROPER car! Will love to see more of it, the original film on it back in the /DRIVE days is probably my favorite video Chris ever made, nice to see it stuck around! Also yes, Enzo is a brilliant name for a dog. Loved that! Will send this video to a friend tempted by these for how cheap they are to get to 200MPH in 🤣
Had one, a 1987 535 iS-A. Even as an automatic on TRX tires a great car.

I'm just about to buy my old E28 back and I can't wait! It's no M5, but it's had an M50B25 stuffed in and it's fun! E28's are underappreciated, I absolutely love them and can't wait to see Chris's video on it.
Proper Chris Harris content 🙏 about a proper car ! More of this please !
Imagine the benefits of NOT owning one of these
im not sure but my dog keeps asking to go 180mph
exactly... even if it was a ferrari i cant stand unreliable anything.... even if it was a gf, if she fails on me she have to go, thats it, lifes to short to have even more problems when u can avoid it and i also own a 5 series of the next gen and it still have alot of made to brake quality german engineering... reality is bmw make more money out of maintenaince that from selling the cars.... and its never a good sign if you have to open the engine bay more than 1 time per year.
@@thepro08 more than once a year? i see you dont know much about cars
You'll need to open it more than that just for screen wash alone @@thepro08
@@thepro08 it's not a Honda civic, it's a road car with a race engine. Of course it requires more maintenance 😂
Could listen to Chris natter on about cars for hours. Great stuff.
Darragh truly knows his stuff! And congrats to Chris for his sheer bravery in buying this magnificent machine.
Chris, you are a proper car guy, I hope you continue doing car stuff for a long time, as there are fewer and fewer of "your kind"! Also, you should do a collaboration with @M539 Restorations (YT channel, this guy is doing amazing work), I'm sure he'd make this car perfect! Cheers
That’d be awesome!!!
Have the same opening rear windscreen on my 75 Tourer's tailgate - it's been problem-free! 🤪
I love this thing so much, I could never afford the maintenance so living vicariously through Chris is the next best thing 👌
This is what we love to see Harris
I actually always drove my E92 M3 on the stick when on road, felt more interactive. On track I used the paddles (aftermarket ones which were great, but felt silly at 30mph)
BEST BMW seats are e38 Contours, delicious!
E28 every time for me just so chuckable, those were indeed the days.
We need a follow up video now please with driving impressions after you've had the work done. 🙏
I love these types of videos. It reminded me of 10 - 14 years ago Drive Channel, which was amazing and the best. Also, I love how Chris called people discussing old and worn parts nerds. He also calls people like that a "sad individual". Love it! Please make more videos like that!
Once again love the fact that the e60 platform is finally getting some recognition
It’s funny you mention how good the sound of the hifi in this car. We have a 2007 335i that’s the same year as this car. Without a doubt it’s one of the best sounding stock audio systems I’ve ever heard. The car is 17+ years old and it sounds way better than the optional/upgraded stereo systems available in new cars now.
Harris is such a funny guy, great to see him unfiltered
E61 and E28 - a man of taste I see.
I absolutely love that Harris gives the true costs. So different to other YT who gloss over costs
Not bashing because I love the content. But as an e60 m5 owner I think he’s under estimating costs here. I know that Intake and plenum from infinity design is £3.5k! I’d say he’s getting free to cheap labour to only be at £10k for all that work! Most of the work he’s done here I’ve also done to mine and I was at £10k just for the intake, rod bearings and control arms. Let alone the clutch and anything else!
@@kylem7457that’s not worth it. Insane costs.
@@jonasbaine3538 I think it’s subjective. It’s. Avery special motor, the CSL never saw production and this part is exactly what BMW had on their CSL prototype. It’s a lot of carbon, well engineered and plays a beautiful tune of an aspirated V10. To me, worth every cent
@@kylem7457 it’s the car appreciating or depreciating in value?
@@jonasbaine3538 appreciating? The fact you have to ask tells me a lot
This is the perfect content. Neil and Chris showing some proper car nerdery
Chris back to his old video style. Best out there!! More please 🙏
Love the mr12volt unit! Glad you got it as well
Finally, someone talking sense about why the SMG is so good and engaging to drive. Great video as always
Chris makes the best content, he should do it for a living.
The oil consumption is fucked but then so is the fuel economy.
My ex e46 m54b22 also required 1l oil every month, maybe because ccv was a bit f*ckd. Fuel consumption and power was fine, also no oil puddles on the ground, exhaust wasn't smoking, and always past the emissions @ MoT My ex e36 m52b28 didn't drink a sip of oil😮 but it had oil catch can instead of oem ccv.
If you listen to the collecting cars podcast he changes oil brand and the consumption is radically reduced.
More of these videos pls. Love watching Chris. One of the best on cars around.
Love the ID Intake and plenum, pair that with their equal length headers and you’ve got a properly breathing V10! Also there’s a tonne of options to get CarPlay in these cars but the mr12v is by far the best, it’s the only one that send audio via fiber optic to the amp so the quality is as good as what you’d get in any car today! Love this content!
Need more of these. Longer episodes like the old CH on Cars 👍
More videos like this please!!!!! Love the longer vids.
More of this please!! PLEASE!!!!!
These are lovely cars, but, you certainly need a lot of money to run them - I know lots of people who have owned or, currently own, and they are like a really toxic relationship, it's the best when they work, three times a year, for the rest of the time it's just a headache ! On a side note, I much prefer this type of content than the "quick steer" - More of this please, proper Chris content!
Had a e60 m5 for 3 years and I stand by it being one of the greatest cars ever smg and all its about the theatre and experience on that era of tech and it ticks all the boxs
Fabulous machines! 🔥❤🔥 I’ll never forget the howl of the engine, the first time I heard one on the street, when they were new! Thanks for the video! 🎉
Chris, the way you describe the SMG is spot on, you need to drive the car to that gearbox, which was for me M & S6 everyday. All those reviews who day the the gearbox is hopeless only drive it in Auto mode (in which is is as they say) I miss mine, had it for 2 years, flogged it to hell every single day (35000ks) and the only issue i had was throttle actuators, but was expected. Not expected on 2nd day of ownership though. Avg fuel consumption was at least 21L/100km
21L/100km! Wish I could afford those sorts of bills haha. That's nearly $50 to drive 100km here in Canada. Pretty close to saying it would be worth it in an M5 though.
Chris Harris plus Darragh really is the perfect antidote to the fury and chaos of the world.
This is elite level content, really enjoyed it! More Darragh!
This is the content we all need. Its the perfect mix of the good influencers and self professed car anoraks. Loved every second, saving for my own E61 M5 has begun.
It’s like watching myself and a friend in our garage, chilling, only with a recorder. And that E28 just sitting there.. my god, what a machines. We just bought a E60 M5 as well and are in the process to buy a 328i convertible with 60.000km on the clock. Can’t wait for both.
Love this car and we need more videos with it. 😎
Love these videos! Can’t wait to see more and follow Chris’ journey with this amazing car.
Love it. Absence of the Car Play is what's been putting me off e60 M5 since forever.
Brilliant
Easy solution to the oil burning. Find an oil additive that contains a healthy percentage of ester. Cleans the ring pack and ring lands.
Superb, looking forward to something similar on the E28.
On the oil consumption. I used 3 to 4 litres of oil on a round trip to Le Mans last year from Milan via Monaco. The average speed was higher than what I’d be comfortable mentioning but I think with a big engine with lots of pistons with some miles on it you’re bound to have some oil usage. I do also have a leaky main seal but whatever. It used to bother me but I don’t let it anymore and it’s only heavy on oil when used at high RPM, it’s pretty good doing to the shops and around town. Car was Mercedes E55 Kompressor
Absolutely loved my E60 M5 had one for 2 years it was my only car only had a new battery and wheel speed sensor it was a very looked after example when I got it always been on a full BMW warranty
2:00 Intake noise is SO MUCH better than exhaust noise too, it always sounds cooler.
Really love these types of videos, honest look over a mega car. I used to have a LS430 and the fuel economy was similar, was lucky to see 20mpg on a good day
M5 is legendary machine and it will remain that as long as this world exist.
I love CH videos like this, they are the best
I have to wait 4 more years before transporting it to USA I CANT WAIT!!! 😍😍
A couple of blokes, in a shed essentially, talking bollocks about a V10 BMW M5 Touring. Perfect.
Really enjoyed this vid because of how Chris got on with Darragh. Was a bit of a Green MX5 shaped Elephant in the room in the background too...
I converted my SMG M3 E46 to manual myselft, but i like Chris' opinion on the SMG. It's a thing you need to master and learn to get it right. Thats what it makes interesting and thats what i liked about it.
I thought my eyes were going funny and I was seeing drops of some kind of liquid dripping. Glad he said it was the air con 😂😂😂
Love this! I had a saloon I used daily for 4yrs (don’t ask about the fuel 😅) the V10 and SMG was sublime and the haters know nothing. Biggest car regret is selling it as mine was a minter and good as gold mechanically. Did a Ring trip in it too and proved it was a genuine 200mph car on the Autobahn as was Evolve tuned. True masterpiece cars from BMW 😍
Awesome vid, love this as much as driving the exotics
Wonder how many of these were made? Thank you for helping restore a piece of history!
The e28 M5 is coming back 😄🤘🏻
Met Chris at Bicester in January, when he’d recently bought the E6. It was parked nearby and he was very excited about it! I have a UK E28 M5 and look forward to the next video on DWP - it’s only been 12 years!!
Never stop making these Chris
I installed mr12volt CarPlay on my 2012 Cayenne Turbo. It’s absolutely the best CarPlay retrofit that I’ve ever had, and I’ve tried three other brands. It uses the fiber optic connection for audio, so it sounds even better than the stock system. High recommended.
Infinity Designs also have a lovely set of equal length long tube headers.
Already in production 😊
Brits are some of my favorite people in the world, their dry sense of humor is just my perfect cup of tea and Mr. Chris Harris is is such a likeabe bloke, I will automatically click on anything he releases here, that's my idea kf entertainment.
I’ve got a 90’s estate and can echo many of the points/criticisms/positives albeit in a more Scandinavian fashion.. Love an old quick estate. 👍🏻
Love it
Old M car restoration videos might be the greatest pleasure on KZhead
I really love these kinds of videos! Do more please.
More of these please on all the Harris fleet. Love it
PS who doesn’t want to go for a pint and chat about flange
Even the M-seats in the first 1-series/3-series had those side bolsters, great trackday feature!
21 min mark played multiple times, hilarious... woo woo woohoo.... This was great.
That’s a man who gets it. A real car guy. This is the last of the quality built BMWs in my opinion. Still a bit cheap in places, but better than their modern replacements. I took a similar gamble recently with an E91 330d manual, because I love the way they drive and the practicality of the touring. It’s needed some upkeep, but I’m not homeless yet.
E60s really are the best, I had a manual 530xi and miss that Logic 7 sound system and multi-contour seats (my bolsters adjusted but weren't active), one day I'll return to the E60 fold with and M5...one day!
Honestly love these videos 😍😍😍
I love videos like this. More of the same please Chris, and more often✌🏾
"Intake noise is the future" - YES... YES... I'm not sure how long I've been saying this... my Corrado VR6 used to rock a BMC CDA airbox and boy that thing made the VR6 really bellow... but the exhaust note remained completely reasonable and not annoying AF for other people. On the E61, I'm not fortunate enough to have an M5 but I do have an E61 520d of a similar vintage and as every year goes by, I love it more and more. Yes it's expensive to keep on the road but I've done a lot of repairs myself which has kept it manageable.. it's a superb car and it's crazy how cheap you can pick them up for these days. Just, as eluded to in this video, they are a bit needy now at this age in terms of maintenance :)
Brilliant!
That was Absolutely Brilliant. ENJOY MANY MORE MILES IN YOUR M5 CHRIS.. The Ultimate M5 Driving Machine😊😊😊👌👌👌
What cool workshops!
I wish I could hang out with Chris, top bloke
Loving the dog just standing watch. \m/
Great vid - proper car people ❤ love the Tidal in the apple carplay and yes the hifi was peak bmw imo. Amps built by Lear or Alpine from memory...#geekingout
I've been watching your content from the s4 avant with the mouse who eat all the the rubber gaskets 😂 keep up the good work... and you are a jammy bar stard ❤
Cool cars. I remember from my 535d e61 days going through all that with the I drive and suspension. Not to mention warped brake discs, thermostat, turbo pipes, new torque converter etc etc.
I came pretty close to buying an M6 of this gereration 6-7 years ago. Looked for an manual but couldn't find any. Went with a 2012 911 instead. Patted myself on the back for saving myself from which would have been years of agony. I really wanted to like this gereration M but felt like the manufacturer was more focused on business tactics rather than creating a solid drivers cars.
Great video l think I would need a job working for the BBC top gear maybe to run that beast 😂 if you sell it keep us viewers in the loop l am interested to see how long you keep it before you fall out of love. 😂 Love this old car stuff better then you showing us a new Porsche or Ferrari, Keep the videos coming 👏🏽👍🏽👊🏽🥂
Ah I miss the adjustable seat bolsters on my last BMW giving me hugs :(
chris, this is mega. i feel like E46/E9x and E39/E6x is "peak BMW" and these cars are juuuust modern enough to be able to support things like apple carplay (i've done the same retrofit as you, to my E91), but have hydraulic steering, reasonable ride quality and a proper NA engine. renewing these cars is absolutely where it's at.
