I love how when Kirk attempts to hold the Commander hostage, she takes the opportunity to order Tal to fire. That's exactly what Kirk would have done, had their roles been reversed.
Yes, however, when the Enterprise changed course once the cloaking device was up and running, the Captain was gentlemanly and courteous enough to assign her quarters on the ship and treat her with dignaty, quite the opposite of the way the Romulans treated him when he was on the Romulan flagship. He also assured her that she would be left off on a nearest starbase for her safty as well as her dignity. EXCELLENT EPISODE, THE ENTERPRISE INCIDENT! Loved every minute of it!

Spock's final comment, that the Romulan Commander would not have respected him if he had betrayed his ship for her, is something lost on many people. A deeply insightful realization for any person to have, let alone a Vulcan.

When Kirk disguised himself as a Romulan, he stole their cloaking device. When Picard disguised himself as a Romulan, he ate some soup and then got captured. Cowboy diplomacy for the win. Amazing episode. R.I.P Leonard Nimoy.

Joanne Linville was the most beautiful Romulan I ever saw. I am 63 years of age now and I can still remember seeing her for the first time in this episode, and in this dress. I also loved how they re-used everything, NOMAD was the cloaking device, saved the ship instead of destroying the crew....

It's a shame they could not salvage Nomad. The knowledge it had with its merging of the Tan'Ru probe could have easily given the Federation Transwarp, AI, and massive improvements in ships and planets in the 23rd Century. I could have seen an episode where Nomad's AI matrix was the basis for Data.

Yes, I was gobsmacked when I saw her. My immediate reaction was, "OMG, she's aged well!" I had to pause the show there and then to research the 'Continues' actress.

It's one thing about the Original Series that is definitely superior to the other Star Treks. The Romulans were allowed to be graceful and elegant enemies, and in many ways, had more depth of character. The other series have made them into almost cartoonish villians.
Agree. Especially enjoyed the other good Romulan one, Balance of Terror. Another captain with some personality. Even the Klingons had character. Though my favourite was always Kruge from ST3.

This ST TOS episode shows the extended depth of Spock's character in a way that only a few others do. The reveal that he had been momentarily 'tempted' was exceptional.
Can I just say, the Commander's dress is just gorgeous. A garment that would look at home on a runway.
The designer was names Bill Theiss. I agree he did a wonderful job.
The Romulans were portrayed as a very elegant people. I hated how ugly and spartan they were presented in TNG.
They were gearing up for war in TNG.Its 100 years later, and a very different era.

After 50 yrs this show is still the best of sci-fi. The characters been protrayed just awesome.
Back then, they knew how to make stories, real stories with a touch of emotion as a side story. Now today, they have these emotional stories with scenes you can gag on, with a smattering of tech they have now.
Back then they also made plenty of crap stories. We just remember the good stuff. For example, I do not collect and reminisce on bad stuff, I collect and reminisce on what I think is good. Comparing the best of the past with the bad or even mediocre of the present is never a fair comparison.
esa Software, I agree. Most of the original series episodes had more complexity and subtlety. The lighting, the background sounds, the conversations rather than a stiff script. Even Spock had facial expressions. The original series allowed suspense to build. The newer series have very little of that. The newer the series the more it relies on weapons and war. Too much CGI for CGI’s sake. One of the best episodes of “Enterprise” was “Carbon Creek”. Cerebral, thoughtful science fiction.

Yes, Nomad is recycled. They had to be economically responsible you know. And conveniently every alien planet they ever landed on spoke American accented English.
Glad the 21st century has mastered the USB and Bluetooth interoperability. Such tech, as well as touchscreens, will have been lost til at least the 24th century (original timeline, not kelvin or the Enterprise series borg reverse engineering). Enjoy it before ww3.
Man she was hot. STTNG made a mistake making Romulans looking different than Vulcans. They should look the same.

DS9 ended up making similar changes to the Vulcans.
This was always an argument between the film and tv show production teams in the 80s as well. Luckily Picard rectified it and going forward romulans are much more like they were.
Romulan make over a disaster. They look totally stupid with the Moe haircut and those dumbass shoulders.
STTNG had the opposite production problem as TOS. TOS suffered from too little budget, STTNG often had too much, and used it to do things better left undone.

Come on now... I was a HUGE fan of TOS. But it had its share of hammy acting, bad acting, and heavy handed pathos. It just had much better writers in the writing room (at least for the first two seasons).

I liked in TOS that (mostly) the alien makeup was minimal, leaving the actual appearance to the viewers imagination. And the actors didn’t have to act through makeup.

That minimal makeup was kind of necessary, but I agree. I recall reading that the set of the Enterprise D in TNG cost as much as a whole season of TOS. Whew!
Joanne Linville is a great actress, she is still living and is in her 90's. I just saw her in an episode of "Gunsmoke" from around 1960. That is a great outfit she's wearing.

this episode is so great on so many simultaneous levels - writing, performances, scoring, direction, cinematography - it's almost *dizzying*. an absolutely superb episode, star trek at its best.
I remember this line when I was younger. Now at 64 I still recall it. Truth AND shade ..love it
Joanne Linville looked like my Mom and they were about the same age. She was a fine actress in Star Trek and in many TV and movie roles throughout her career. After retiring from acting she became an acting teacher and helped a new generation of actors learn their craft. She was never a huge star, mainly playing supporting roles, but she impacted every scene she ever appeared in with beauty, dignity and grace.
That this was just "standard TV" once is mind boggling.
That sure was a damn slow turbolift ride, going from the bridge to deck 2.

Had to match the dialouge between Mr. Spock and the Romulan Commander. So, yes, it had to be slow in order for the dialouge between the two could be completed.

From a purely tactical perspective, I love how the Romulan immediately tried to fire on the last known course of the Enterprise. That was intelligent writing.
They should've laid out a 360 degree spread or at least a few shots aft. That's what I would've done.
German U-boat does a crash dive. Every second lost by pursuing destroyer reduces a chance of a fatal hit.
I am proud to say I watched these episodes for the first time when they were aired on TV. I was 14 or so. I was lucky enough to have watched them with my dad, who had an equal interest in them before Star Trek became popular. Now, as I see them again and again, I can appreciate how good the writing and acting was. As Gene Roddenberry once said, "a wagon train to the stars".

I'm a First Gen trekker, too. It premiered one day before my 5th birthday, on my sister's 6th birthday (that she never let me forget). Both of my parents were sci-fi fans, and the premier episode, "The Man Trap", totally floored them, so needless to say I never missed an episode, either.
@@just_kos99 Yes, "The Man Trap" was the first episode, but it wasn't the first one filmed. I think there were a few episodes filmed first. If you notice the first Kirk pilot film, they were still using the old lasers instead of phasers. They had the old baggy uniforms. In the man trap, the show was obviously out of order because Kirk and McCoy were already teasing each other as if they had been on the show for a while. What do you say?
Late Dad and I too, 66 through 68. I was 8ish, now 64.
The best of Joanne Linville. Strong character, clearly a leadership role, yet intelligent at the same time she could express sensuality. Her makeup, wardrobe and the way she was lit were incredibly professional and top notch for color television in 1968. It's too bad she was wasted in later fare like Hawaii Five-O and other pulp 70's TV. She had her own Picard Maneuver with that short command uniform skirt of hers. It's no wonder so many people remember her for this role more than any other.
Strangely her character was never named (though I'm sure someone writing the EU has done so).
I find it odd she comes aboard the Starfleet vessel and changes into an Earth dress, makeup and earrings.
@howie9751 The Romulan Commander had changed out of her uniform and into a dress before she was accidently transported with Spock to the Enterprise. Therefore it had nothing to do with "Earth".
@@spuwho Either way, I don't think the Romulans had Earthlike clothes and cosmetics for their women, especially their Commander. It was a contrived part or the script to make Linville beautiful for the end of the show.

Back in the 60s this was canceled after 3 seasons and the 3rd season was garbage. Now we have 4 star trek series and counting with no end in sight. Count your blessings.
While the Commander was the star, I would have liked to have seen some more from Tal in the 'future'. He had a very fox-like (dare I say Romulan) style to him. Always felt bad for Spock and the Commander in this scene. She's trying to maintain her dignity despite the hurt she feels, and Spock, even through his demeanor, feels like shit for what he had to do. The attraction is still there.

very well written episode. When they do top rated episodes this one often doesnt make the list? I dont get that. She's what we now call "hot" loved her and Spock together. Clearly a worthy match!

What makes this show so special is the mood it sets. The lighting and music really add to the overall vibe. It conveys that otherworldly feel that's missing in the other Trek shows. Don't get me wrong I like the other trek series but this one has that special sort of cozy vibe because of the intimate tone it sets.
The computer graphics on the ship for the later series was just an extension of what we have now. TOS looked futuristic at the time.

The whole franchise, but especially TOS, occasionally had guest actors on who really delivered excellent, arresting performances. I love this episode with the Romulan commander. She added such gravitas and class! And such guests elevate the regular cast performances too.
AND THAT means something. After all the classical STAR TREK had been a low budget show were you heard always through the cracking of the inexpensive stage floor if you watched the episodes in the original sound track, So top actors were rare on the show due to th minimum payments
I used to run home when I knew star trek was comming on ..I've seen every episode a thousand times..I memorized the dialog..ecelent writing!!! each episode was like a good movie..

What a crush I had on the Romulan Commander, the late and very fine actress Joanne Linville. She was an excellent tennis player and raised money for charity by allowing other tennis players to challenge the Romulan Commander to a set. I agree that the Deputy Commander was also an interesting character. Loved Star Trek.
I really enjoyed this episode, especially the exchanges between the commander and Spock. Even as a young child, the adult demonstration on display was apparent. I could only hope to find such a connection with anyone.
I didn't get the full meaning of their love-making scene until I was grown. Touch-telepath make-out. Something else. I am not sure I would even allow my child to watch certain episodes and this was one of them. When he touched her he knew her mind. Dangerous talent if it were applied for espionage.

I loved the woman Romulan Commander. 😁 Her daughter looks exactly like her. And Kirk looking like a Romulan..😁 I loved it. This series was brilliant!
Episodes such as this and "The Enemy Within" show how successful Roddenberry was in creating the modern genre of sci-fi drama. He was right, it does work. It would be great if more of the newer shows followed the example of writing such as this episode.

This episode is incredible - surprising twist every 10 minutes, a lot of action, suspense, very adult sexual tension. Fine music, modern FAST editing, great dialogue, good acting. And really interesting character development for TOS standards... You have no time to notice any plot holes ;-) It's not the lightheartedTOS as you know it, it's somehow ahead of the era. My answer to the question"'what does this episode do in the 3rd Season?" IS "It could only happen in the 3rd Season". I can understand that fans of slowpaced and sophisticated TNG may not like it very much (they sometimes don't like JJ Abrams reboot as well for the very same reasons), but this episode has aged much better than Star Trek spinoffs in my opinion.
Thanks to Dorothy Fontana, the writer who created the Romulan Commander, played by Joanne Linville. Fontana has said the idea for the story was sparked by the Pueblo incident. She was dissatisfied with the result in terms of logic (Kirk and Spock as duplicitous spies), but agreed with Nimoy and Linville that Vulcans and Romulans had to display a non-Terran sensuality (via touch telepathy). If you like to read, you might like Kathleen Daily's fanfic novel in 2 parts, The Romulan Commander's Story (online). It picks up the threads from the close of this episode and explores, as she puts it, "the profound personal and political consequences of the events depicted in 'The Enterprise Incident'."
Sorry, but when I said this episode could only happen in the 3rd Season I meant it was thanks to the fact Dorothy Fontana wasn't there working on the series anymore. It would be much duller episode without Spock and Kirk as spies. The lines would be much worse probably, I mean Fontana wasn't a particular skilled writer. Dramatic lines like " BUT the birds and the bees are NOT Vulcans, Captain" or Leila calling Mr. Spock... well, you know "Mr. Spock" during their break-up scene are all Fontanas contribution to the series, sadly. She had some decent ideas, but was an amateur really. I'm not an old TOS fan, I discovered the series just recently "with a fresh eye" I hope. You'll probably disagree with a lot of my opinions - I think the praised 1st Season had actually more flawed episodes than Season 3, but people don't mind because "they just started".
Why sorry? Differing opinions make life interesting. TOS has a lot of clunky dialog, so singling out Fontana on that score seems a tad unfair, but perhaps I sounded adulating. I give her credit for coming up with the Romulan Commander, despite the ease with which the character was duped, which Fontana also criticized after the fact. I was disappointed, but it was 60s TV; they had less than a hour to tell a story with twists and turns, speeding it up with the blinded-by-lust trope, which, as acted, was riveting. Agree it wouldn't be the episode it is without the covert mission, but that doesn't refute Fontana's point that duplicity was actually out of character for these white-hat guys. Would have added some interesting tension if they'd been given more such missions based on the success of this one. I read somewhere that Joanne Linville was asked to reprise the Commander's role in TNG but had another commitment. Wish the script or draft were available. .
Ok, I'm non-English speaker so maybe I shouldn't critise writing skills of Dorothy Fontana or any other native speaker, for that matter ;-) My English is defenitly worse than hers as you may see... But maybe my view is an interesting one thanks to this. Beside I think that an undeserved bad reputation that Season 3 has comes partly from people like Fontana trash-talking it over the years. And she wasn't even there on this honorably sinking ship and that was my point.
Tastes change, and TOS isn't sacred. Different views are preferable to gushing enthusiasm. It's useful to be a devil's advocate for season 3. Besides The Enterprise Incident, there were some other intellectually interesting ones (I esp liked the details in Is There In Truth No Beauty, The Tholian Web, The Cloud Minders, and Turnabout Intruder), but the Enterprise Incident is the best for me. Back then, Rod Serling pointed out how uneven TOS was: "Star Trek was again a very inconsistent show which at times sparkled with true ingenuity and pure science fiction approaches. At other times it was more carnival-like, and very much more the creature of television than the creature of a legitimate literary form." (from Wikipedia). It was totally depressing when the series was put in the 10pm slot on Friday night, the budget reduced, and the show finally cancelled in 1968. You've read about it; it seems to have colored a lot of people's attitudes. For an ordinary viewer, there was no way to see it ever again (I bought all the James Blish text treatments, sold as paperbacks).
