.............................................................
In the mood for a hot hatch drag race? Of course you are!
The Honda Civic Type R is one of the most popular hot hatches on the planet. From either the front or the back, it’s instantly recognisable as a Type R! Once you take a closer look, you’ll find a 2-litre 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine under the bonnet, which will deliver 320hp and 400Nm.
So looks and performance are all good - but what chance does it stand against the new Golf R over the quarter-mile? Just like the Type R, the Golf is powered by a 2-litre 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol to deliver 320hp. However, the Golf R can deliver slightly more torque, coming in at 420Nm. But that’s not all! While the Type R is just FWD and a manual, the VW has AWD as well as launch control!
Does the Honda stand a chance? You’ll have to keep watching to find out!

"dual clutch 7 speed... all wheel drive..." race is over. zero chance.
AWD does almost the whole thing. Without it you just struggle like seen in the video. I hate it, I also have to deal with it. Driving loss would be an issue over 100 kph, but that wings on the Civic may result in a quite high air resistance. The Civic never had a chance. The same cars (in terms of power and air resistance, not in weight and drive loss) - one with AWD, one with FWD - will end in almost the same time for 0 to 200 kph. But the Drag Race will end sooner. Yeah... and that dual clutch 7 speed (DQ381)... it's a nice gearbox. I've got in my Cupra, but I don't think it's really fast. But faster than a stick shifter...
Agreed. This is pointless. Drag rsce doesn't prove anything. How abt a lap arnd the track.
Absolutely true....more gears usually means quicker shifts. 320 hp 7 speed car vs 320 hp 9 speed...I’d put my money on the 9 speed
@@Charmer4856 But...you will have to shift more. Or it doesn't make a big difference, because the higher gears don't effect the lower speed acceleration and there are literally two or three overdrives. That is the case with the 9G Tronic (Mercedes). Nowadays chances are low that all 8, 9 or 10 gears were used for maximum performance. With the DQ381 it means, you are in 5th gear at the end of the drag strip. It is possible that a manual transmission would be in 4 th gear. I'm too lazy to compare the gear ratios of both cars...
@@robertmcdonald9762 Yeah, it wouldn't make much difference, though it shouldn't be ignored. But every German car manufacturer (with petrol cars I've driven) uses only six of their seven, eight or nine gears for (limited) maximum speed (~250-260 kph). Every higher gear is an 'overdrive' to save fuel and to reduce noice. A six speed manual transmission could do the same - just without an overdrive, so it's not really eco friendly and noice reducing. Like I said... I don't know what is the case with the Civic Type R. My last car with six speed manual transmission (from VAG) had a totally useless 6th gear for maximum performance. Maybe Honda drives a different way and (almost) redlines the car in 6th car, so they are not much different. But... the gear shifts will take much more time, even with some clever electronic innovations and if you torture the clutch. Around 300 ms at least for each gear change... I thing the bigger point is the traction at the start. It's just horrible and it costs a lot of time.

Several reasons i bought an MK8 R: the new AWD system (by Magna), the awesome DSG (done with manuals after 20+ years), just overall capability as a daily driver in ALL types of weather AND ...its not FWD.
youre gonna start feeling real stupid when you keep skipping you favorite songs on those stupid buttons as you make a turn. Also good luck changing the climate settings in the dark. Also I hope you arent planning on keeping it for too long cuz all my VW cars had a failed DSG after 60k miles. You americans have access to so many more cool cars than us europeans for way cheaper and you get the dogshit VWs. We dont get the Elantra N for example, really cool car. For the overpriced golf you could have gotten a kia stinger, a much better car and a much better transmission, a real automatic which is not only more comfortable as a daily, it also isnt a time bomb.
If you want to cheat the soft/rev limiter, let the car slightly roll at very low speeds and set the gear to N and then you’ll able to rev all the way to the red spot.

That golf r has got way more than 320 hp. A 12.3 second 1/4 mile means it probably puts 350 to the wheels which is over 400 at the crank. The Mercedes-AMG A45 is rated at 421 hp at the crank and put in a 12.2 second 1/4 mile, so that’s the kind of power we are talking about. The golf r mk8 is way underrated!
339hp is what a youtuber got when he tested golf r so idk its weard how quick this thing is
Just so Americans understand. These are forced induction engines. Power is variable and depends more on the capacity to deal with heat. They can give a higher HP number but then some idiot discovers the car can't sustain the official power figure for long time. So they give a lower power figure. And btw Civic overheats also despite being pompously called a track car. These are turbo engines and power comes at the expense of endurance.
Manual vs manual would have been a more fair race. That being said the Mk8 is a beast

The mk7 also has that, I could take advantage of it when I had my mk7 gti in a roll race by starting off the race with a downshift or upshift and getting the full boost right away instead of having a small delay. I’m sure you probably know or have felt how some automatic turbocharged cars sometimes don’t hit the full boost target in-gear until the upshift and then it will be able to hit full boost and pull harder. Party the gear ratio and more load, but some turbocharged automatic cars have the anti-lag in between gear shifts and it helps big time. Though you can get better times with the longer gears in the manual mk7 gti vs the dsg. Yes, basically much of the time loss in the type R is not because of the slower shifts, it's because each time throttle is lifted boost drops to 0 and it literally takes 1 -1,5 second to ramp up target boost. That's how factory map works in every new car because of emissions. I had a DSG car before and staying on boost is what made it quicker than more powerful cars.

It was hard for me to watch as a Honda/Acura fan and owner of 30 years, because I knew the CTR would lose as did most of us. There is a reason why these Golf R's are dominating. Everyone that's bought and dyno'd one is getting results of 350hp+. Nice to see a manufacturer lie (in a good way) about the HP figures.
I think the second drag race was the best drag race on KZhead 😂
Drag rape...
And even with the headstart Honda fans will stay it’s not a fair race 🤣🤣🤣
Oh dear this is gonna upset a lot of Type R owners....
0:15 Everytime Mat says 420nm of torque.. I always quietly say ‘Nice.’
ayo stop commenting on the videos and render my damn footage
@@sinhashantanu629 funny how you assume I’m capable of tasks like those.
@@307skylake7 isn't that the igpu up to coffee lake I think my 8700k had it
Really want to see how this R goes against the M2 Comp
not the same class…. m240i would be a bit more comparable
@@neekjp No, he was right. M2 would be about the same level.
@@skylined5534 M2 is 60k+… M240i is 55k loaded. in terms of performance the M240i is much closer to the R. M2 is much faster than the R.
The only question I have is, did your race driver do the Honda Dance to turn traction control all the way off?
I love the Golf and always have but I think I might purchase that Type R and still have it running great 20 years later.
A honda will alwys outlast a golf
Only the gearbox wont, believe me i had one for 1 year, amazing car until the gearbox went
@@krisc6644 yeah not rev matching will do that
@@rturner1321 if you try to improve your 0-100 time will do that... a stopligth sprint will do that, these gearboxes are made of butter,i had a lancer before, never had a problem...
Honda’s tend to have electric problems. Toyota, Nissan, Mazda are better.
The horn test is also very good... Keep it up
Can you do all the golf r mk7, mk7.5, and mk8
The VW will be paying visits back to the dealership with all kinds of issues where as the Honda looks HOT and will be as reliable as the Universe.
When there is a R in the gauge cluster of the Golf R makes me feel like I'm in reverse lol
We all knew the Golf R would win easily. This wasn't even a race 😂
yeah its kinda pointless. dragraces between hothatches are kinda dumb in the first place. thats just not what they are for. i want times on a twisty mountain road. now that tells you more.
Yep. Since no corners are ever involved, the Golf wins. It's certainly all that's needed in the UK, where none of you is much use around a corner, I've noticed.
AWD DCT vs FWD Manual with similar numbers...who actually thought the CTR had a chance.
@@SampleTracks2224 well we seem to be producing some pretty good F1 drivers who smoke the competition or other nationalities.
Type R PoS
Those two are the fastest new small hot hatches in the USA. All the faster ones such as A45S and RS3 are only available as sedans in the US.
Golf - better performance due to automatic and 4x4.. even ordinary driver can go very fast... Civic - more fun to drive even if acceleration, 1/4mile time is worse... fwd and manual, lower mass
6:29 "I think you got 100 more horsepower" that's the truth. We all know the CTR is underrated by 30hp. Doing the math, power to weight, if CTR is 320 then Golf R is 360... but that's if they were tied in the roll race. So, 380hp. Add in the 30hp underrating of the CTR, 410hp. We haven't even factored in that there is more drivetrain loss since it's all wheel drive! So, east 420hp. That's 100 hp more than claimed/rated people! Massively underrated!
That golf R is almost an 11 sec car 🔥🔥🔥
But it looks crap so ......
@@Mizzkan better than that honda, it looks like they let a 9 year old with autism design that car with crayons.
@@Mizzkan This explains the difference between German engineering and Japanese engineering, the Germans simply make the better cars in terms of speed, power and overall performance. This Honda Civic type R is an embarrassment the fact that it’s FWD says a lot as-well.
I actually prefer the look of the honda. It looks angry.
@@omarmahmood5011 The type r wasn’t designed for drag racing. It’s happiest on a track. The golf r will be looking at the Civic’s tail lights by the end of the first corner. With a £7,000 difference in price, the Honda engine can be pushed north of 400 hp and all will be even. And the enjoyment of a perfect manual shifter can’t be communicated in numbers. Honda does many things right (excluding exterior design).
Well done VW you smashed it 👏👏👏
Nope, they paid for it. Fake
@@lizakoronovsky227 oh stop

@@lizakoronovsky227 nope....pity u
@@lizakoronovsky227 Destroyed the Type R they always giving excuses 😂😂🤣🤣
Actually, not much additional drivetrain loss with the Haldex system. It won’t engage in a rolling race.
When I heard the Golf R is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission versus a 6-speed manual Civic Type R, I knew the Civic would stand no chance, whether or not the driver is a professional
Would love to see a Golf R vs GR Yaris battle of the hot hatches
Would be fun but manual vs auto again and a cylinder less so maybe once they can get a manual that’d be fun
@@marcozuniga1186 new Golf R isnt available in manual.
Sadly the Yaris wouldn't get a look in!
the Golf R is not a hot hatch. it has 4 doors and much more space.
@@boa_keine_ahnung That definition doesn't go far these days, hardly any 3 door hatches left!
In my 1999 WRX I raced againts a type R. I ripped it so hard off the line that his extra power is the only reason it was quicker than me. A brand new type R couldn't even get half a car length over on a 20 year old car. Add some water on the road and the Civic is not going anywhere.
Hey Mat! We waiting a video with the Golf R versus the last model of TYPE-R 🥇
