Junk to Jewel | Trashed Antique Display Cabinet Restoration
Grab a seat and a cup of coffee or tea - this is my longest video yet on the channel but it is worth watching every minute of it.
120 year old handsaw restoration - • Repairing a 120 Year O...
Moldy, rotted caned rocker restoration - • Another Junkyard Gem |...
This week I present the repair and restoration of an antique display cabinet that I found on the side of the road while walking home from the gym. It is approximately 100 years old and was constructed by a local furniture maker which is of course no longer in business. It was falling apart, chipped, broken, and missing glass panes but overall in fair shape. It had five layers of paint, at least one of them being lead paint, and old, crusty varnish.
This project required removal of the lead paint, filling 10,000 nail holes, repairing chipped wooden legs, wood working, sanding, staining and finishing, and assembly.
Special bonus: all of our animals make cameo appearances including our cat and granddog who is visiting from out of town!
Chapters:
00:00 Intro and disassembly
02:40 Top piece
05:26 Front glass frames
09:44 Cabinet door
11:12 Shelves, skirts, rails
15:15 Front legs

I was feeling blah til I watched this thru and realized I had finished a whole house,An historic Italionate Villa of 27 rooms by myself this way and nearly cried. Was able to realize I had just done a little chore that took this detailed process and was so grateful for your showing the process you saved this lovely piece from perdition. Hello to the helpful pups in the meantime. Thank you.
Absolutely gorgeous! And the fact that you took it completely apart and put it back together is mind-blowing! As someone said earlier, you absolutely are a true craftsman. Thank you for sharing.

You are not just a restorer, you are a magician with wood. Beautiful !!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much 😀
This is pure ASMR... The trains chugging, the birds calling, the children chattering... the carpentry, shaving, scraping, sanding, cutting,, carving, clamping, all the noises and visuals combined, lacking only the scent of the wood, wax, and grime... there, you've gone and made me go all poetical, just watching a vid of you restoring something that most people wouldn't even have bothered with... Thank you 💖
I am so glad that you enjoyed the experience!! Thank you for sharing your very kind words and I hope to see you in the next one! Peace ✌🏽
This is so relaxing, just to see you bring out the beauty that was hiding under that lead paint!!!

The amount of hard work and hours you’ve put in this piece is unbelievable. You turned an ugly duck into a swan. BIG well done.

My toxic trait is watching amazing artisans like you do these restorations and thinking "I could do that" but then I remember that I struggle to finish my laundry and know that I would never have the patience for this. Excellent work!
Incredible!! Who knew this lovely work of art was hiding under multiple coats of white paint and grime? You, sir, are a true artist!

Love that you took the cabinet apart and gave it the "Spa" treatment! Glass is indeed nerve-racking! Turned out so well. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the nice comment. 🌻
I lived that close to the Alaska Railroad in Anchorage. It got to be so Comforting that I missed it when I moved to Texas 22 years later. It was fun, especially when I rode the train to Seward. My condo was visible for about 2 seconds! I love you work, it's beautiful!
Thank you!! I am glad that you enjoyed the project. The track behind my house is actually a spur on a switching line so the trains are usually just crawling by and if we are in the back, we can wave and say hey to the engineers!
Supurb! The color is rich and glowing! That you did all that paint removal in such a safe and through manner speaks to your craftsmanship!
Thanks! Had to be extra careful with this one. I've got another piece coming up soon that may have even more lead than this project! 🥺
What a beautiful restoration
Thank you!!
Beautiful! I love to hear the trains as I grew up 1/2 block from the tracks and now live a block from 2 train tracks.
The trains are cool when sitting back there but they make it hard to film sometimes!
You can tell a lot about a craftsman by his/her way of taking a restoration object apart. So many people aren't careful because "it's old stuff and already broken". A real craftsman takes his/her time and is very careful because every part is important. You took your time, and I appreciate it so much! A fantastic restoration of beautiful furniture, a great video. If I can have a wish, I would like to see more in real time. Everything doesn't need to go in express speed. :)
Thank you for the very kind words. Showing steps in real time would be nice and I would like to do more of it. However, in the past when I have focused more time on a specific task, people have gotten bored with it and drop off from the video. I try to have a good mix now. Thanks for the feedback! 🙏🏽✌🏽
You have MAD repair skills, sir! I can't believe you don't have more followers! This piece was a wreck and you've made it stunning. 🙌

Labour of Love ❤🩹 Incredible work, I'm sure the original maker would be very proud!
That would be incredible. I need to research the company some more to see when happened to it. It is from a local furniture maker back in the early to mid 1900s.
I just loved that you restored this amazing piece of furniture and didn't repaint it also kept it out of the landfills. I will continue to see more of your work!
Thank you so much and welcome to the channel!! 🌻

It’s beautiful! I love when a restorer takes a piece back to the wood it made from and let’s the natural beauty of it shine through. You did an amazing job!

Beautiful beyond words. My generation were quite familiar with re-using/re-styling furniture, but nothing as amazing as this. Thank you so very much for showing us your work. I hope there's a 'wealthy' Patron out there who will spring for a very comfortable work shed for you 🥺 You deserve the best! 🤞👍
You must be reading my mind. It's been raining here for the last few days and will be for the next few days and that makes it hard to work on these projects since I like working outside. I do have a full shop but it is poorly lit and not good for videos (and full of projects in the queue) so I don't like filming in there. I was just talking today about what I can do to make my shop better for filming these videos. Thanks for the very kind feedback. I am happy that you enjoyed watching this project. 🌻
Es ist die reine Freude, Ihnen zuzuschauen. Soviel Wissen, soviel Ehrgeiz bis ins letzte Detail. Fantastisch ;-) Grüße aus Frankfurt (Oder), Germany
You did a beautiful job. I have one I restored my grandmother gave to me. It was totally black varnish. I stripped it in high school for FHA project. My grandfather built it in the 1930s. I love it. I am now 75 years old. You are great!
Thank you for sharing and for writing such kind words. I am happy you enjoyed this project.
My Mum had one of those they were beautifully made pieces. My goodness what a lot of work. Everything taken apart, then reassembled, the scrapping and the sanding and the holes, my goodness what a lot of holes in that wood. It came out stunning well done it is back to being around for another hundred years. My Grand dad swore by the hand planers and the hundred year old saws. He even had a old iron bench clamp with the steel rod to tighten the screw. He made a few pieces of furniture in his time including a very dark wood almost black dressing table for my mum and then it was handed down to me then to my sisters before it got infested with wood worm and then dad took it to the back of the yard and we had a bonfire. I am glad you restored it too many pieces of furniture end up on a burn pile these days there is ways to bring things back to life or reinvent them into something else. I am also glad you saved the original makers marks on the back that was an especially nice touch. A grand job sir!
Thank you for the nice feedback and thank you for sharing your story. Your granddad sounds like someone I would get along with nicely. Cheers ✌🏽
What an amazing transformation! Turned out gorgeous! It's hard to believe it looked so trashed before! You are a magical furniture refinisher! Beautiful job! 😊❤

Grazie mille e ciao a Roma, mia figlia sta arrivando lì in questo momento. È una città adorabile. ✌🏽🌻
I have seen dozens & dozens of restorations. Yours has to be the most extensive. I would have sworn that was initially just firewood. Much respect. You turned it into a beautiful cabinet again.
Thanks!! This one was a bit tedious for sure. It wasn't in bad shape under the five layers of very protective lead paint, it had just lost its integrity and couldn't stay up on its own!! I am glad that this one is complete. Stay tuned, the next project is an old classic oak desk from the same time period.
If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I never would have believed that the before and after were the same piece!! You have excellent skills, and your patience is exceptional. This was such a pleasure, and an honor, to watch. WELL DONE!!!!

Thank you very much my friend. Were you able to stick it out and watch until the end? It was a long one this time. 😓
I definitely enjoyed watching the whole thing. But I still couldn't understand how you cut your hand while removing the tapes 😁😁 There is a lot of work and a lot of patience here. 👌👌@@Restorology
@@Restomaniac Dude I have no idea how I cut my hand on tape. There must have been a sliver of wood or something stuck on it. I know I am going to bleed at some point during each project but never in the first 30 seconds!! 🩹🤕

Haha thanks! I am only slightly ambidextrous but I am happy you enjoyed watching this. Thanks for the great feedback. Cheers 🍻
Until I watched this video, I never would have believed anyone could repair that damaged piece. Even better you mostly used the original wood. When you need to add patches, the repairs were seamless. I loved the final color choice. Repairing and reusing the original hardware was a chef’s kiss. I hope you were able to sell it. If not it will be a beautiful piece to pass down. Thanks for sharing.
Hi. Thanks for a kind and thoughtful message. I have not tried to sell it so right now it sits in my dining room. I love how it turned out. Not bad for a garbage pick find. 🍀

Such a clever steam set up
I would have used a harder finish on it, than just some wax. After all that work you did on that. To have protected the wood. Beautiful job.
That was a neat restoration 🎉in the 90s my family had a furniture shop and I used to but the old silky oak ply wardrobes and convert them into big display cases 👌but over time people tastes just changed the 2000s came and the furniture game slowed a lot 🇦🇺

You didn't restore this piece, you built it from some scrap wood you found in the vague shape of a cabinet. Soooo many pieces, I don't know how you kept them all straight. I wanted to cheer when I saw screws coming out and dowels going in. Seriously, this was more than a restore. Amazing work.
