  • This is a very random comment - But I love how the quit option is called “Abandon Timeline”. It makes you feel bad for quitting, even if everything is going horribly. If it was just called “quit” I probably wouldn’t care at all about ending a bad run to start over. But just thinking about all the people in those buildings and the CEO’s struggling to explain why the mechs just up and left... Even if it’s just a game, that one design choice makes you think a lot on your actions.

    @bugjams@bugjams4 жыл бұрын
    • Not just the people in the buildings, also the entire planet will be taken over by an alien hive mind. Approximately 4.6 billion individuals in total terror, left to be forgotten. Not only your family is left for dead, also a past version of yourself will be left behind. On the bright side: the federation themed FTL-pods indicate that humanity had already build the intergelactic federation en will therefor not go extinct. It is merely an entire planetwide civilization becoming the feedingground of an alien monstrosity.

      @bugjams@bugjams4 жыл бұрын
    • @@bugjams It is possible to find secret pilots, which are actual caracters in FTL. For example, you can have the well known mantis 'Kazaaakplethkilik' in one of your mechs. In FTL, he is feared for fighting other mantisses instead of other species. In Into the Breach he's not fighting for humanity, but because he simply likes killing oversized insects. I don't know if you have Into the Breach yourself, but is so, I recomment you start looking for glowing beacons inside broken mountains and ice. ; )

  • The thing that is so great about ITB is how it makes you think in terms of "what is an acceptable loss." Entire runs can rely on that favorite pilot of yours getting sacrificed, which really makes it worse when they are given different personalities that make you not want to lose them. Also, favorite track is Cataclysm because it embodies the whole "they are coming, get ready" vibe.

    @SuperGamersgames@SuperGamersgames Жыл бұрын
    • My favorite run was the one where I sacrificed a pilot to protect the bomb, then they showed up after the run and remembered that they had the Invulnerable trait. I love when I think I lost something and the game takes pity on me. 😄

      @LimeyLassen@LimeyLassen Жыл бұрын
    • A thing Subset Games has been really good at is silently incorporating subtext about warfare in their games, not as an explicitly written element but rather as an active gameplay component: Into the Breach makes you come at terms that there WILL be losses whether you like it or not and sacrifices must be made, whereas FtL tells you that sometimes your sense of honor must subdue to convenience, and if you have to be ruthless to accomplish your mission so be it.

      @tehrik0020@tehrik002010 ай бұрын
    • And sometimes those acceptable losses come at your mech's own hands and you're put in a trolley problem of sorts. You're about to take 2 grid damage, but if you instead punch the critter into an unrelated neighboring building you'll only lose 1. You know full well everyone in that building will perish, but unfortunately they must be sacrificed for the 'greater good'. Subset has always been amazing at mixing in-game strategy with purely story-based consequences. Obviously on the surface taking 1 damage instead of 2 is optimal in that situation, but it always reminds you about the cost of life these actions are taking in-lore.

      @headcrab4@headcrab44 ай бұрын
  • What I really appreciated between both into the breach and FTL is that every choice while not showing it, or giving you a giant sign that says "YOU DID BAD." It just says nothing, then later on looking back at that action and really thinking about it. You start to realize "Oh fuck am I the bad guy?" Then you start putting so much weight behind your actions. The next accidental civilian casualty just makes you feel worse. Or when you completely destroy a ship that was surrendering. Then once you hit the end and you start fighting it becomes 10 times more engaging and intense because you want to say that those sacrifices were worth it to save the entire universe. Fucking flawless design.

    @Skellington77@Skellington773 жыл бұрын
    • Was your decision to destroy a Rebel ship transporting supplies to civilians, supplies that - for all you know - could be medicine required to fight a plauge, a decision based on vengance, desperation, or greed? Did you slam that Vek into that apartment complex full of innocent people - some of the last humans on Earth, mind you - because there was no other choice, or because you wanted to get your pilot promoted faster? Are you doing this for the sake of humanity, or are you going to abandon these people - as you have done countless times - just because some number is not high enough?

      @dydlus@dydlus3 жыл бұрын
    • @@dydlus Those are not last humans on Earth - just some people on one of the 4 islands adjacent to the Vek hive. The new teams are hit or miss but you can win fairly consistently with them. The new mechanics are fun as they add cool new ways to play with the debuff effects. And thank goodness for the "Thick Skin" trait you can get on your pilots ! Then I tried the Unfair level with a squad I built. Oh my God is the name justified. I won in the end but I save something like 85% of the population, which to me is absolutely horrible (I consider 90% to be a bad win) but you just HAVE to accept that it's that tough. I'm glad they didn't add the new Vek in the final mission though. That would have been absolutely horrible to play against. Unfair is definitely for people who want the maximum challenge. Then when the towers called out, two stuck out to me. A child calling "Dad, look!" and a dog barking. At that point I realized the full weight of what I was fighting for and what was at stake if I lost. • FTL's music was more about the wonders of space. Sure, at times it got serious, like Last Stand, Rockman, Lanius and Mantis, but for the most part there was some level of "I'm in space. This is beautiful." And that was great! There is no whimsy here. This is the end of the world, and we don't have time to remember the good days when people didn't have the Vek wiping out billions. You want a happy feeling? Go play FTL. You want to fight to save the world? Stay right here.

    • To be fair you are fighting to save the galaxy in FTL, I'd say the feeling of The Last Stand is on par with what you feel in ITB most of the time

      @InFluxCapacitor@InFluxCapacitor6 жыл бұрын
    • Well, as i said, some songs do fit that kind of serious feel, including Last Stand. But as a whole, it just doesn't feel the same because the songs are more slow and quiet. Even in combat some songs have a long build up to the serious part, but for the most part they seem more wonder filled and calm to me than serious. But you are entitled to an opinion on the internet, (believe it or not) so feel free to disagree.

      @renimusmaximus@renimusmaximus6 жыл бұрын
    • You're fighting to save the Federation in FTL, not the galaxy. Other species pretty much don't give a damn about Federation vs Rebels war and for what we know (lore wise), we can't say if we really defend the "good" side of this war ^^

      @telendar2949@telendar29496 жыл бұрын
    • Telendar Good point. I feel like we are the good side in FTL due to our racial inclusion vs the humans only Rebels, but we cannot really say that we are the good guys. At least in ITB it's a bit more clear.
