I get asked the question "what is the difference between Catholics and Christians all the time. Here is my answer.

  • So first, an apology. It would seem most people who came to this video were looking for differences between Catholics and Protestant Christians. I've now made a video addressing that very question. It's a bit longer, and goes through history, earthly organisation, and beliefs. Check it out on my channel, or click the links I've embedded in this video.

    • shiv bhonsle The Holy Roman Empire was founded in 800 AD. The “Catholic” or “universal” church was founded by Jesus upon St. Peter. Jesus was killed by the pagan Roman Empire and Peter was killed in Rome on Vatican hill in the 60s AD. His successors reign till the present day from that spot.

    • DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CATHOLIC AND CHRISTIAN - ---a Christian is one who adheres to Christ as Lord and Saviour and believes in the Bible the Word of God sola scriptura that he is saved by grace through faith in Christ's blood atonement for the forgiveness of his sins as doctrine of salvation, while a Catholic is one who adheres to the Roman Catholic church and the Pope for his doctrine of salvation, and not on the Bible. not by faith alone but by faith and works , and there is no assurance of salvation, he has to wait until judgment day or go to purgatory after death to know his fate or destiny. in other words, for a Catholic, salvation is an ambiguous term, there is no clearcut definition, because it depends on what the Pope says. not on the Bible the Word of God, as faith cometh by hearing the word ofGod. And, unfortunately, even many Christians (including Catholics) seem to misunderstand the relationship between Catholics and OTHER kinds of Christians (when they say "Christian" they really mean Protestants). As you point out, the question is a "funny" one, as it is a misleading question (as I feared your video would be, based just on the title alone). What I think is the Catholics put emphasis upon the role of Pope, Priests, Nuns, but especially the Church’s role in Salvation. The Church is there for worship and teaching but only God can forgive sin so the Priest is another word for pastor but he can’t forgive any Sins.

  • I think the issue among some evangelical Christians is the belief of being born again is necessary to be saved and enter into heaven. The issue of being born again is from Jesus conversation with a Jewish elder, Nicodemus, Who questioned Jesus How must he be saved ? Jesus replied you must be born again, but here is where it has become complicated as some denominations have added to what Jesus replied to Nicodemus that you must accept God gift of salvations in order to be saved, or you must recite "The sinners prayer" and other man-made conditions in order to be saved. But Jesus said you must be born again, a changed person who is remorse for his or her past sinful life and the desire to live in the will of God, Thats all it takes to be saved !

A person simply confessing Jesus asthe Christ, the Son of God, is not enough when said person follows his own path outside Lord Jesus and his apostles' teachings in the biblical text. Remember, Jesus said many in that day will say, "Lord, Lord, didn't I prophecy in your name and cast out demons." (Matt 7:22) Claiming Christ and following one's own path is not the same as claiming Christ and following his path.

The bible itself says that the word Christian was first used in Antioch (acts 11:26). Antioch was an ancient city of the Roman Empire which is a good 300 miles or so north of the Holy Land,in what is now Turkey. It actually never occurred to me until the other day that the word Christian is not found anywhere else in the Bible apart from twice in Acts and 1 Peter 4:16 Even Paul never went around saying "I'm a Christian! Are you??". He called himself a Follower of the Way according to Acts 24:14. In Paul's letters he will address the people as Believers or Brothers or as simply the Church of God,but he doesn't use the word Christian anywhere! Interesting stuff

  • being in germany, being catholic or lutheran can be more concrete in the fact of church taxes and of course, registration. To be a member of these two organizations, there is taxes to be paid and formal registration. The truth of the matter when we point out the problems with catholicism or even with protestantism, we really do not find differences. We find maybe reasons we are not one or the other. For someone who does not want to part of either, can use these points. The burden of being catholic should rest on the catholic and not on the christian. christ did not call us to follow the catholic or the protestants. He called us to follow him. In these various organizations, there are distinctions that may work to help follow him. In certain countries as a missionary, it helps to be under one of these organizations to avoid being point out as being a sect. I think the ball is in the catholics side of the court and it should be there. simple, not all christians are catholic. All catholics "should be" christians. Try talking to some catholics about jesus and see if you get a rise of hatred.

  • This is confusing belonging to a Religion with being a Christian, it is possible to be a Christian and not belong to any organised religion and belonging to any Christian religion does not automatically make you a Christian. One has to acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God, he died to atone for our sins and rose from the dead in order to do this and thereby fulfilling the prophecies in the Old Testament. and thus save mankind from the sin of Adam and Eve. This is what he meant when he cried 'It is finished' as he died on the cross. Jesus had done the work God had sent him to do. God and man were able to be truly reconciled if man accepted Jesus and his teaching and lived by this. It is by the Grace of God that we are saved from eternal damnation and that salvation will only be achieved by accepting Jesus into our lives and living accordingly. Keeping rules, either those laid down in the Bible or decreed by Church hierarchy will not make a whit of difference to salvation if you do not accept Jesus into your heart, look at the parable of the rich young man.

We go to priests to confess our sins because Jesus gave his disciples, the Apostles, the ability to do that. John 20:19-23 Jesus breathes on the disciples and they receive the Holy Spirit (The are being God-breathed), and they are given the ability to forgive sins or to retain sins. Matthew 16:17-19 Peter (the first pope) was given the keys to the kingdom of heaven and authority to bind and loose things, and the church that Jesus built was on him.

She is even referred to as the queen of heaven in some hymns. They do not baptise by immersion as Jesus did and Christians do.

  • Whereas the “Synoptic Gospels” (Mt, Mk & Lk) summarise the Last Supper, each with barely 10 verses, and all focusing on those vital Dominical Words; “Do this in remembrance of me”, in St John, Five Whole Chapters are given over to events in that upper room! Chapters 13-14-15-16-17 are all set at the “Last Supper”. That is ¼ of the whole Gospel. John is deliberately giving us a disproportionate account of the events of that night. He wants us to understand something. He is telling us that the whole message comes together “On the night that he was betrayed”. According to John, it is here that Christ gives some of his most definitive teaching: “Remain in my love”. “I am The True Vine”! “A new commandment I give unto you”. Fashioned in a style that would have been familiar to them as the sacrificial language of the old Temple, it all culminates in the “High priestly prayer” ch17. Strangely however, John makes no mention of the bread & wine or those essential "Dominical Words". How can this be? Some non-Catholic Christians would suggest that this is because for St John, the memory of the sequence with bread & wine (known as the “anaphora”) are not significant, but they would be sadly mistaken! Let us digress for a moment. Look at what John does with the Resurrection… Writing at a later date he is well aware of the accounts told in the synoptics. Matthew, Mark & Luke all write in similar styles narrating the events in chronological order. Resurrection scenes inevitably come at the end. How else can it be? Now look at St John: Slap bang in the middle of the Gospel: “I am the resurrection and I am the life, he who believes in me though he die, yet shall he live and whoever believes in me shall never die! John puts the Proclamation of the Resurrection at the heart of the gospel Ch11. Now consider what he does with the eucharist... He takes it out of that momentary last night and puts it into the substance of who Christ actually is: “I am the bread of life, unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you shall not have life within you!” Bishop Baron is well known for emphasising the graphic nature of this text. The actual word here (φάγητε) translated simply as “eat”, means to chew or gnaw like a dog with a bone. It is a glaringly carnal image, referring to his flesh (σάρκα). It was as offensive then as it is to some people today. Hearing these words, “They walked with him no longer” 6v66! John is doing the same with the Eucharist as he has done with the Resurrection? He has taken the significant part out of the upper room and written it into the substance of Christ’s life. All the gospels are written retrospectively, but John, at a later stage is reflecting on the experience of the early Church. In a real way, they met the Risen Christ in the Eucharist. He nourished them there with the substance of his divine life. Herein is the ancient faith. As Christians approaching the Altar today, we must reflect no less on what it is that we receive in the palm of our hands?! In just the same way that his mother reflected on who it was that she held in her arms, at her breast, in her womb, on the cross and in the resurrection! Of course, it is all spiritual, but it is more than just spiritual, it is Incarnational! For this reason, St Paul warns us: “anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself.” So, let us examine ourselves more carefully as we draw near on this Feast of Corpus Christi! God Bless Fr Kevin

  • Respectfully I beg to differ from your definition of being a Christian. To be considered a Christian it is not enough to only belief that Jesus Christ is the son of GOD and that the Holy Bible is the word of GOD as per your definition. In addition to that, one MUST belief that Jesus Christ is GOD, that HE died on the Cross and on the 3rd day, HE resurrected physically. One must belief on all of these with no exception, in order to be considered a Christian. Your explanation of Christianity is good. The one I use to explain to some, is this : Imagine Christianity being a Tree with many branches. Well, Catholicism is one branch, protestant another branch, orthodox another branch, baptist another branch, Anglican another branch and so on. All of them belonging to the same tree of Christianity and all of them believing in all of those tenets described above. The early Church was originally Catholic (meaning universal) only, until the reformation by Martin Luther in early 16th century which split the Christian Church into two branches, the original Catholic and the newly formed Protestant. From then on, the Catholic Church remained mainly unchanged to this day, and the Protestant Church has split further and further and further to around 47.000 denominations and counting, according to the "Center for global Christianity at Gordon - Cornwell Theological Seminary" , which is an evangelical Protestant institution.

She said something about mary but my mom cut her off with a joke. I never understood why they were different because although im an atheist now, one of my best friends told me she was christian when i was a kid (right after i transitioned to atheism) and i was SO confused why she didnt say catholic.

    • @alvaro alas As members of the body of Christ we are mediators within Christ's unique mediation. Read the whole passage in context: 1 Timothy 2:1-5 "I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
