The Awakening the Nightmare campaign, which includes new bookend cutscenes by Blur Studio, takes place a few months after the main game. The story explores the Banished and their desperate struggle against the Flood, which survived the conflict on the Ark and the activation of the replacement Halo at the end of Halo 3.
As always we used relevant gameplay, important dialogue and all cutscenes to create a fluid cinematic experience. We hope you enjoy!

  • That the first infected brute just calmly walked out to herald the return of the flood shows that gravemind or no, the flood have at least enough mental capacity to indulge in the mockery of others fuckups, and the enjoyment of dramatic effect. That and being sentient enough to bask in the moment of freedom renewed. All this just keeps them at the top of their game as the ultimate threat in all of halo thus far.

    @ButFirstHeLitItOnFire@ButFirstHeLitItOnFire5 жыл бұрын
    • I think it was to be more dramatic to emphasise the flood being released. I think in all likelyhood the flood in their feral stage would just attack on sight. However this dlc doesnt really make clear whether the proto-gravemind was formed before the flood were released or afterwards. I am inclined to think the former since creating a proto-gravemind that large would take a huge amount of time. Especially since the proto-gravemind we see in Halo CE was tiny in comparison.

You can see it even in how they attacked. THey used special flood forms that seemed specifically designed for entrapping prey rather than killing it. Willing to bet this new "mind" of sorts understood at least enough to know the moment it was freed it would need to gather enough live specimens to feed itself.

I think the main issue is compared to the elite's we just don't get to see them as often outside of combat. Very few of the games have significant brute characters, so we usually just had combat and whatever idle behaviour they showed before while their guard was down.

(No clue how the fuck it connects all flood forms minds across the galaxy simultaneously tho, but it can do so, seeing as how the gravemind was not in the solar system at the time of the covenant cruiser crash landing, but through its flood forms we can still hear terms like "the metal shell arrives" or something along those lines.)

I get all my lore knowledge simply from the games and books (but not the comics, I don't have the time or money to get all of those too). The way the Forerunner trilogy presented the flood, in my opinion, sounded more like there were multiple grave minds, they could communicate with each other, and all had the same end goal, but were different personalities and the Primordial was simply the first. Personally I don't see the way those specific books portrayed the grave mind(s) as being all the same personality, but multiple. But it might be that i'm just missing some detail that explained that, or that it was more ambigous than I remember.

  • For those wondering, The Halos don't kill just the food. It kills anything and everything of sentience. This includes all higher forms of flood save for those lacking a central nervous system such as spores. The Gravemind from halo 2 and 3 is Dead, gone. It knew to retract much of it's forces to the depths of high charity, but knew the Halo from the ark would kill it. The flood here is Feral, around the stage of a Proto-gravemind. The flood do not make new graveminds on the same infected zone, as such, the fact they grow a new gravemind (which is really weirdly huge) is a big indicator the original is dead.

    • Actually, it's because this expansion entered planning and development AFTER they already had the season pass and it's content planned. (And the season pass already sold for the price it was at for the content it was given). Since they delayed Halo 6's announcement, they needed something to hold people over so they came up with this quickly, which is why it resolves itself and has no lasting impact.

  • While I really enjoy the Jiralhanae getting more personality and development, the story perpetuates a big problem: the Covenant (during the main games) and the Banished consistently come off as incompetent. If Atriox knows that Voridus has a tendency to disobey orders and go in, guns blazing, why would he let him anywhere near High Charity? Atriox has to assume the high possibility that Voridus will do something stupid. Atriox, and to a lesser extent Pavium, seem stupid to trust Voridus with any real power like that. It's like giving Gillian the keys to the submarine! Other than that, I was hoping humanity would be featured as allies. For how pragmatic Atriox is shown to be, its actually a little odd he is so against the Spirit of Fire crew. I was hoping they would come across one of the Spartans, desperately fighting for his or her life against overwhelming odds. An EXTREMELY shaky alliance is formed, but Atriox points out the Flood is simply a far bigger threat than anything else. If anything, I wish this had been a full fledged game that expanded Atriox's character.

    • Atriox, at the time, probably was pissed at Voridous because of his disobedience, and hardheadedness, and thus forced him into the mission for redemption. Even his partner talks about not being able to protect Vor if he fucks up. In the end, Atriox spares him because he slightly fixed the mess.

  • Weirdly enough unlike most fans I really hope the flood doesn't return, I doubt 343 would be able to do them justice and on top of that they haven't exactly mastered just having two factions to fight so why should we hope that they'll add 2 more? Assuming the banished will replace the covenant I'd be fine with them being added, but the flood... Hopefully they'll replace the Prometheans because the only time I had fun fighting them was when I fought the knights in 5 and that's it..

    @Dovahkiif@Dovahkiif6 жыл бұрын
    • On a literary level, 343 had originally set up the Flood for their return. Established in the novels released prior to Halo 4, they set up a little "prophecy" that the Flood would return as a test for humanity when they were "arrogant with power". Sounds like humanity as they are in Halo 4 and 5, right? Anyway, I kinda dislike that the Flood in this expansion were taken care of so quickly. Kinda throws out the importance of their existence and that little "prophecy" they had set up.
