Volvo V90 v BMW 5 Series Touring v Mercedes E-Class Estate 2018 | Head2Head
Premium estate cars: style shouldn't come at the expense of practicality, but in order to compete at the top of the class, a car needs to deliver on both fronts. The BMW 5 Series Touring, Mercedes E-Class Estate and Volvo V90 are three of the most handsome and capable posh wagons money can buy, but which should you choose? To find out, I'm going to give them a thorough going-over inside and out, before hitting the road in each to find out which is best.

I was right
Oliver Lowe Yup... it's logic
Yeahh about iDrive system
Oliver Lowe because its a fact
autistpain the screens are better in the merc, only a small screen in the bmw. Also merc is very easy to use once you get used to it. Maybe its better but double screen wins for me.
Bmw with m-package. Merc with amg line. But the volvo without the sporty r-design? Cmon m8!!
You have the polestar I believe
DCPlaysHD i have a 2019 Audi A7 S-Line (interior & exterior). But my parents have an Volvo V90 R-Design and also an XC90 R-Design.

Imagine talking on the phone with hand gestures and the BMW keeps turning up the volume

i'd take that as a sign ang hang up
It’s why it’s disabled on Italian market cars.
😂
I’d have the Volvo personally
I would take the Audi A6😃
i love volvo
I'm a BMW guy, but that Volvo is downright sexy!
It's to look away, really. What an eye catching car! But Merc is teasing the left side of my brain 😅
The front looks luxurious and futuristic but the back of the car doesnt look that new
It really screams chinese.... The old ones were much better!
Screams chinese how?
@The Equinox the V90 is still built in Sweden. S90s are built in China.
The combination of tailgate and luggage net means you can use every drop of space safely in BMW estates, it's been like this for generations even in the 3 series, such brilliant features I have no idea why this is not more common in other cars.
Mercedes! But... Damn! This Volvo is amazing!
You have betrayed your own kind!
Volvo V90 looks way better in the R Design trim with the Bursting Blue colour
I prefer inscription
V90 cc looks even better
@@yuriytymoshchuk9233 what a joke, the normal version is wide and low with nice lines and contours, then youre gonna raise it and put plastic bumpers on it and call it better looking? ridiculous
@@MrKevlarkent it actually is
@@Niels_f2704 Ideally, I would prefer, if possible, the R Design exterior with the Inscription interior!
Drove the V90 recently and it's such a treat to be inside of.
I've had Volvo's since 1979. Yes the V90 has lost some of the little things over the years that people expect from a Volvo Estate. The other two are good cars, but it will all ways be the Volvo for me. She is awesome. The seats are to die for and the looks. They have come into their own. Volvo rocks😊.
They're amazing 🤩
Old Volvo is best Volvo.
Boomers unite
I felt good about buying Volvo until a Chinese multinational company bought a majority interest in the company. It’s feels like it makes the brand less true to its Nordic roots. Still a fantastic car, but I’d rather ride with the silver star these days. 🤷♂️
The Volvo V90 is the best imo, it doesn't have the best infotainement nor is it available with 6 cylinder diesels. But if you're looking after a hybrid it's easily the best choice

I'm from Germany - I think the idea is simply wonderful and authentic. It was really fun to watch. Thanks and keep it up! 👏👍
I am an Audi fanatic, and I would've gone for the BMW all day.
BosnishMaffia this is a fact that we don't see everyday 😅
Same
Keli K. I Think the volvo is the best looking car out of these 3, but as a complete package, I would choose the BMW honestly.
BosnishMaffia especially on this class.. no :D but out of those 3 maybe
sadly that "all new" 5-series has had same interior layout since e6x 5-series :/
Good test. I bought the e estate myself and it's almost identical to this one. I also optioned the two rear facing xtra seats in the boot which gives it so much more flexibility on the school run, I don't think BMW or Volvo do that. Great all rounder, wonderful over long distance, have done 600 miles in one day and it's great. Only real disappointment is that it has so far over 20k miles only averaged 42mpg which is almost identical to what my 04 2.7 merc CLK averages!! Thought it might be better:/
Matt I'm really liking your presentation style! Great job mate! The fake exhaust tips wind me up too, given the money you're paying ...
I love all of them. Great video, Mat!
Merc shape is old.... Very similar to 2011 shape Volvo looks sexiest
I really like both however I prefer the Merc design of the rear compared to the sloping design of the Volvo.
@@MaZEEZaM i really love those fake exhaust!
SirBlank so what fake exhaust. You won’t race in formula 1 with it
The Engi Behind The Slaughter dude cars is my favorite hobby. Only wannabe people complain about fake exhaust pipes in 190hp family cars. Maybe if it’s a s6 or a C63 with fake exhaust pipes I would agree. But the hate is stupid for having them in normal estate cars
The Engi Behind The Slaughter and you kinda don’t get what I was trying to say
For me a Volvo is far more desirable than a bmw.
@G MG that means your fucking high volvo is very desirable
Or people treat you like a typical beemer driving twat
@G MG lol, only BMW drivers would think the looks are jealousy and not just annoyance at their absolute lack of basic driving skills.
@G MG Haha, Volvo is in the same price range you doofus (and superior cars at that). And I _can_ buy I BMW, but thank god for giving me the good sense to not get one. Got my eyes on a beautiful V90 CC though. Going to check it out this weekend actually, wish me luck!
@G MG they’re all in a similar price range tho... and have u seen the new BMWs ew

Great choice 👍 Just bought an E Class estate as my retirement car. Perfect blend of luxury and driving pleasure.
The quote as intro lol loved it mate ;)
The M-B basket ... totally outclassed by the grocery sorter my 2012 Nissan Murano included. Have not ever once used the sillly box, but used the Murano's pop-up grocery sorter every week.
I love estates more than crossovers
all the practicality without the drawbacks of extra weight, decreased fuel economy, and poor handling.
HowieYisBored AYE buddy
Absolutely loving the BM 👌😍
I think that delay is there for a reason. It is a safety feature :) If I am not mistaken, VW also had it on their Golf's at some point. You had to press the pedal a second time in order to get a kickdown - in case you fell asleep or something.
Defo getting a e class premium plus estate after this review thanks 🙏
I, like many other fan boys, got an old Audi A4 for my first car. I used to be a huge fan boy for all German cars. Now that I've become a true car guy and appreciate all cars, that Volvo is just stunning. Inside and out. That's my pick. After that, I'm not sure. I like the Mercedes interior, and the BMWs exterior.
I've had two 5s which I quite liked, then an E-class which while great to drive, the command system is a nightmare which after two years I was glad to see the back of. Have had a V90 for two months and it is the best of the three by a country mile. The interior is fabulous and the ride/handling way better than anything comparable. Engine the weakest of the three is a bit rattly at low speed. Kit is amazing. Boot has this flap device thing that when folded up secures numerous bags of shopping...Pilot assist/ACC is epic..thr app will do everything remotely and download business miles as an esv file etc..But bottom line is used V90 is several £1000 cheaper...
"The design its a little bit "nnjaaahh". Man i love you +carwow
I really think you should do the test again, now when the Volvo D5 engine has got the 'Power Pulse' feature. An extra compressor, to get instant response when you touch the gas pedal
Wow. That Volvo is gorgeous. Outshining the rest 😲
Well...this is your opinion. :)
Thank you so much . I was looking between 5 series and xc60. I made up my mind to 5 series.
Love the side profile of the Merc and the Volvo is nice too
That G31 is so stunning!
I love BMW but I have a xc60 Volvo and it is AMZING!!
BMW 5 series....everytime for me...
My two previous cars were e class estates and this time I choose the Volvo V90 R Design , so much more for your money compared to the Merc which is fitted with the dreadful standard Garmin sat nav and lack of toys. Very pleased so far and glad I made this choice
This was 4 years ago. Do you still like the V90 better?
Great test! For me it's the Volvo, but the CC version.
I think mercedes in the last year made a huge step forward and became the best in pretty every aspect.. before that was only the most comfortable, now it's just the best, maybe because of the last generation of engines and weight reduction
The Swedes have hit a sweet spot with Volvo Design, props
I would agree except I don't like the sloping tail, I prefer the Merc rear end.
i 100% agree but if you buy it the polestar R-desgin looks way better so you should go with that

Somehow i knew you Will go for the merc even before i watched the video. Its kind a mats personal favourite brand.

Just by opening doors...you will feel quality. 4 GC is like a toy next to it. To me it look far better then on tv screen... Perfect car!
I love how volvo are in the majority of comments. Volvo with family packages are around £50,000. Volvos interior design is simple but beautiful
If you would also test real life emissions, the BMW would win hands- down (actually the 2.0 L version is one of the cleanest diesels around)
Hey Matt can you do a review for the new Nissan Qashqai? I'm thinking of getting it in 2018 down under and would love your opinion on it! Thanks Matt!
Hi man because of your great videos I bought myself the Mercedes-Benz E200. And I may say iam impressed! Grtz
its common knowledge that volvo has always made great looking estate cars, going back to the 90s the 850 was known as the best estate looking estates
I loved my 960, what a stealth car. Could take just about anything at traffic lights, but did have a propensity to step out.
i agree with u about design v90 looks the best
I drive an E220d. Awesome engine, great 9 speed box, suspension (AMG trim) a bit jumpy on b roads, infotainment (with the 2 screens) looks amazing but the touch "alien" pad makes no sense
My dad has 2017 Volvo V90 and it is such a nice car. He is going to get new one this year. Cannot wait to have a ride with it
Volvo & BMW for me!
The V90 r design with 20" rims looks out of this world.
Justin Small shame on them, they didn‘t choose one in that trim. Also does my head in!
You said that on the Mercedes that the track pad is in the way of the swivel wheel but as you place your palm on the track pad to use the swivel wheel the track pad will automatically deactivate for easy use of the wheel.

Owned both merc and bmw, and quality in bmw much better, feels a class above the merc. Also drives better, with better gearbox
What models did you have and from which year?
Yes, this is very important as you had to have the same class (f.i 5series Vs eclass) and also the comparable model years (E60 Vs w211) The E60 is a better car than the w211, but the w212 parks the F10 imo
Yeah but the bmw is also 15 thousand Pounds more expensive than the merc
Mercedes is waaaaaaay better quality than BMW. Sugest otherwise, means u don't know what you are talkin about....
I work in a car company and I’ve tried all 3 off these cars the Volvo is pretty ok the bmw is a very hard car to use but comfortable when driving and the Mercedes is easy to use and amazing to drive and I even own a e220d 2018
Looking to buy between merc e350d and BMW 535d. 2014-2016. After driving both still can't decide which one. I was looking at Volvo XC70 also. Probably the most comfortable of all 3. But heard it has problems with electrics. So it was written off.

Put it in the mode where you have to manage the gear up and dowm yourself and it responds immediately when puch the gas
I'd get the A6, looks the best and like the interior design too even though it's not the newest
Actually the RS6 is the best looking estate car
Each to their own, but I guess they were unique for sometime since the M5 for a period was not offered in estate and the E63 was rare as an estate
Ahahahah
Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is the best for me!
Well actually these estates dont cost 50000000000000000 dollars to buy and maintain
Charlie Molda we are talking about normal cars for normal people.
I'd definitely get the Volvo, just as refined, but more sleek inside and out. The car is just pure art, and in the R design trim the dullness in the driving experience vanishes.
Matt, with all due respect and this is the second time i am mentioning this, you are not right on the touch pad controller, you do not need to angle your arm or hand you can rest it on the touch pad and when it notices your arm / hand resting on it, locks the touch pad and you can use the controller with no issue at all. In addition you have the voice activation system which I must say is definitely getting better and better. I have 5 - 6 Mercedes and all with the touch pad and all current models so I am aware of how it works.
"Shed loads" of gadgets. Had to put on the captions to be sure of what you said there, mate.

Yeah, i bought a c220d amg line with premium plus pack, keyless go, and panoramic sunroof (see bob flavin review)... it was totally the right decision; drove waaay better than equivalent bmw, despite what people might try to say who havent experienced both cars... in the trim i went for and tinted windows it looks way better than v90. The infotainment is really easy and intuitive to use after spending a day with it.. on eco mode im averaging 46mpg URBAN! I just bought an E450 estate here in the US. I'd have gone for the BMW 5-series if they sold them here in the US. I love the E450 though. Tons of space and nice driving dynamics as long as one doesn't push it too much.
I never understood why some companies don’t sell estates in the USA. A big loss think but I would call it ignorance and arrogance by the manufacturer.
Love my D5......But mine's the older 2.4 5-pot
Volvo is always the best. Iam driving for 2 years in volvo v40 from 1999 but it still looks like its brand new. Never gona change from volvo 😁
Maybe the volvo gearbox is a bit slower to respond on everyday cars but I think it might be a good thing. If you not having a race car you really dont need a super kickdown gearbox. Its Quick enough. And because it slower it is smother and not a instant pressure on the gearbox which make them last incredible long. Many cars need to change their gearbox after a time, but I know lots of volvo cars that have driven over 400 000 km (216 000 miles) Of course other cars can go that long with the same gearbox but I feel its more common for volvo. Mercedes is also long lasting cars althoug have falled back a little the past decade.
also on the BMW, it has another feature for the boot, if your hands are full of stuff then you can open it by using your foot, place your foot under the bumper, that's another way of opening it.
this is a bit offtopic, but I thought I need to ask someone about buying a car. I was looking to buy a used car from this german online platform. I found one and the price is very low with few kms on the dash The seller says that the engine was replaced by maker when it had 100K and that this can be proved. What kind of situations would require the engine change? Also, if this engine is brand new, should it increase the value of the car OR should I treat it as a 100K car? I mean, when I look to compare this car to other similar make&model, should I compare it with cars that have over 100K (as the old engine had) OR cars that have as much as the new engine on this one has? Hope this makes sense.
I love the look of the Volvo, Though....:)

I really dislike how the C, the E and the S class look absolutely identical, you can barely tell the difference, on the other 2, I would say agree the Volvo is the best looking although BMW did a pretty good job at refining the F10 and tweaking it for the better to make this generation look pretty good imo
Louis Rushbrook "you can barely tell the difference" *if you're blind They don't lokk identical. They look SIMILAR. Huge difference! And its only the e class and c class that look similar. If you couldn't already tell by the massive size s class has a COMPLETLY DIFFERENT front grill grill. S class has three curve headlights, e class 2 and c ckass one. S class has thrre tail lights whereas c and e have 2. They all have different front and rear diffusers from each other. Not to mention... S class has far more chrome and more pronounced depth and proportions especially for its light carvings and shoulder's. And the interiors are massively different So yes while they undeniably share similar design language they are still very much distinguishable. Bmw and audi do this too because by your logic 5 series looks lkke mini 7 series and a4 looks like mini a6 just with different lights. So nearly all German companies do this. Frankly there is nothing wrong with this design philosophy as sales suggest. These cars are meant to be under the radar... Hence the concept of stealth wealth.. . so by being similar they blend in well and allow the car not to be flashy. Furthermore this kind of design philosophy is good also because if they looked completly different for instance and someone didn't like the design of the e class they might give up the e classes better interior for a c class or go to another company altogether. So its actually not a bad thing at all and isn't like how you're exaggerating it.
Well said. Only a blind person cannot distinguish the difference between the Mercs'. That's a fact, the rest are just excuses.
Louis Rushbrook omg. ..and u want to tell us u can make difference between audi and bmw (3er..5er..7er) and (a4..a6..a8? Ur so funny

Thanks so much for this review. It’s exactly what I was looking for as I’m interested in a luxury wagon. Which did you feel was the quietest inside the cabin while driving?
Mercedes E class is the quietest. But those 3 are really really quiet. Even quieter if you take the acoustic glass available in options on those 3. But the difference in sound insulating between those 3 little. The only thing you will hear is tire noise and that depend on your tire but even with Noisy tire it's still so quiet. And as standard those cars have excellent tire so not a problem at all. Choose one and you will not be disappointing, those are one of the best car to drive more miles as possible in best confort and silence you can find
